Shattered Sea is book four in the Tattered & Torn series by Catherine Cowles. The books in this series will both break your heart and make your heart sing. There is also suspense woven through every book that promises to keep you on the edge of your seat. Such is the case with this book. You can read this as a complete stand alone but you will enjoy the secondary characters more if you have read the previous books. This one kept me guessing all the way until the very end and what an ending it was!



Laiken Montgomery is twenty eight years old. Ten years ago, Laiken thought she knew what her life was going to look like. But tragedy struck and changed the course of not only her life but of every single one of her group of friends. Now, Laiken lives in her home town of Wolf Gap, Oregon and runs the local art gallery. She loves her job and is good at it. Laiken lives with pain, both physical and mental from what happened ten years ago. Her goal every single day is just to get through the day. Laiken also has a secret. A way through art that helps her to release all the pent up emotion she keeps inside trying to be strong.



Boden Cavanaugh is a world famous movie star. He also suffered a loss six months prior but since he is a public figure, he was forced to face his grief with the world watching his every move. Boden needs to research a real live horse whisperer in Wolf Gap for a future movie. It will also give him the time he needs for some privacy and rest. He was just walking past the gallery when a certain piece drew him in, never knowing that that is the day that would change the rest of his life.



Neither Boden nor Laiken were in any frame of mind for anything other than friendship but the closer they became, the more they couldn’t resist that something that was developing between them. It was something rare and wonderful. Boden was also finding out that Wolf Gap was a very special place that gave him a peace he hadn’t felt in a very long time.

“There was a magic in the air that I’d been missing for a long time.”

But not everything was good in Wolf Gap. There was a darkness lurking and threatening what Laiken and Boden were building. It was threatening the very safety of Wolf Gap. The sheriff, Hayes, is doing his very best to find out what’s going on and Boden will do whatever possible to keep Laiken safe. But will it be enough?



As I said, there are so many players in this, so many times I thought I had things figured out but Catherine Cowles was not going to let that happen. I have to give her credit because wow was I surprised! This was another fantastic addition to this series. There is going to be one more book in this series, Fractured Sky, and I have to say that I think I am the most excited about this one! I absolutely can’t wait!

This standalone series continues to be one of my favorites. Catherine Cowles has such a talent at combining small town romance with suspense that keeps you on the edge of your seat.

I absolutely loved this couple, and while there is a lot going on with their outside lives, I love the little part they carved out for each other.

The storyline was absolutely amazing. I was hooked from the first page to last. Great writing, pacing, and development of plot and characters.

I honestly cannot wait for the last book in this world, but I think it is safe to say this is my absolute favorite world so far. Not a single one of these books has disappointed.

Ahhhh another angsty and emotional read from Catherine Cowles! Laiken was in a car accident in high school and lost the love of her life. Now, she's working in an art gallery and is living with her chronic pain and broken heart. Boden knows what it's like to lose someone close to you. He's come to a small town in order to research horses for a new movie of his. He doesn't expect to find Laiken, a quiet woman with a painful past of her own that draws him in. Laiken is really slow to open up to Boden, but he's patient and persistent. Laiken learns that she can lean on Boden, especially when other people from her high school accident start turning up dead. I really loved how sweet this romance was and how hard Boden was falling for Laiken. He was so patient with her and knew she was the one. There was also a lot of suspense in here, which I always love. Laiken did have chronic pain, and I really enjoyed having a heroine who had that and shared her life and struggles having chronic pain. This was another emotional hit from Catherine Cowles and now I'm dying to finally have Shiloh's story!!!

This is the 4th book in the Tattered and Torn series and I have to say, this is my favorite book so far.

Laiken has been through so much in her life already and when she meets Boden and has this connection with him, she is scared to depend on him. While Boden is also dealing with trauma and things from his past, both Boden and Laiken bond and start healing together.

Their story was absolutely beautiful and the chronic pain rep in this book was done so well! Boden is a dream and I love the way he treats Laiken.

Just when I think I live one of Catherine’s books the most, she goes and writes the next. I think this is her best yet in the series. I was on pins and needles and completely unexpected what happened in the end. Love Laiken and Bodens story! ❤️

Laiken has suffered sone unimaginable trauma (told in graphic detail in the prologue) and is now left with chronic pain and the arduous task of moving on with her life.

Boden is a famous movie star seeking refuge and healing in Laiken's quaint town, while preparing for his next role.

They develop a romance.

Laiken's past, however, returns to haunt her and puts her life in danger. The two try to keep Laiken safe while solving the mystery.

The background, romantic suspense element came out of nowhere and honestly...had me rolling my eyes. It was a bit over the top and frankly, ridiculous.

the plot was all over the place & the twists were a bit too much. it quite literally made no sense at all. also some storylines were just.. forgotten about? the two mc’s were very likable tho and i loved seeing everyone else too <3

i’m having a good time with this series but the first two books are my favs so far.

Will there every be a Catherine Cowles book that doesn’t move me?!
Once again, a master at prologues…. I was a mess. Seriously, felt everything for Laiken in that moment.

“But life was rarely what it should be. You simply had to do your best to make something beautiful out of the shattered pieces.”

The Tattered and Torn series has earned one of the top spots of my favorite all time series. It seriously just keeps getting better and better!! Laiken and Boden’s story is simply beautiful. I wasn’t sure how Hollywood royalty would fit into Wolf Gap and with Laiken, but wow I am still thinking about this one.

Catherine Cowles is a master of writing suspense. Everything in this book was phenomenal!! I can’t say it enough how much I am loving this series and Shattered Sea was no exception.

One of my greatest pleasures as a reader is watching an author grow in her craft. Following Cowles' writing journey is pure delight and makes my romantic heart ridiculously happy. With each new book she sets the bar higher, and I know beyond any doubt her romances will be an amazing, satisfying reading experience. With writing this good, it's hard to believe it can get any better, but I have no doubt the best is yet to come, and I can’t wait to see what this gifted storyteller brings us next.

The small town of Wolf Gap was struck by tragedy a decade ago and many lives were forever changed, Laiken Montgomery's perhaps most significantly. She lives with emotional scars and physical pain as a constant reminder, yet she finds her happiness in her friends and her job managing an art gallery. Her heart bears the scars of her grief, and she has little left of it to offer to any kind of romantic relationship.

Boden Cavanaugh may be one of the most famous actors in Hollywood, but he's no stranger to loss. As a public figure, he's had little choice but to work through his grief in the public eye, with hungry vultures constantly hovering in hopes of a sound bite or candid shot intended only to satisfy rabid fans by preying on a vulnerability.

Boden's visit to Wolf Gap is twofold. Escape the cameras being shoved in his face and do extensive research for an upcoming movie project. He plans to fly under the radar and have little interaction with people in town. But plans have a way of changing, and Boden's do when he sees something through the window that compels him to step inside the gallery where Laiken works. Two broken hearts recognize the pain in the other, and a cautious friendship begins to bloom.

Oh my heart, y’all, this story! Returning to these characters is like coming home to family and finding unwavering support, unmitigated acceptance, and unconditional love. Somehow two lost souls find healing, courage, and a chance at love they both believed was gone forever. Cowles then adds the perfect amount of drama and suspense guaranteed to keep you reading long into the night.

There's an unguarded authenticity and sage understanding in these pages that comes only from first-hand knowledge of loss, grief and sorrow, and while my mind was enthralled by the storytelling, my heart beat in sympathy for everything these characters endured. Although it's fiction, there's an abundance of wisdom to be found that can serve each of us at different points of life's journey.

Although readers will see themselves in Laiken and Boden's romance, even more profoundly, their story will make the reader feel seen. Balanced with the tragedy, grief and pain are healing, forgiveness and second chances. Your heart may itself feel shattered, but then it will unfurl its wings and soar. Poignant, heartfelt, and uplifting, this exquisite, extraordinary romance is one of my favorite, most special reads this year and one you absolutely won’t want to miss.

Catherine has a unique way of pulling you into her stories from the very beginning. You won’t want to stop reading until you find out who did what! The mystery and suspense elements just get better and better after every book. I like guessing who’s behind all the bad things happening and then bombarding Catherine with those guesses, but now it’s getting more difficult. Catherine has always been an amazing writer and storyteller, but something about this book just feels next level. Laiken and Boden were perfect together, and the evolution of their relationship was well paced. The glimpses we got for the next books characters make me so excited and I honestly feel like it might just be my favorite yet, and I haven’t even read it!

Let me start with the emotionally devastating prologue that had me crying my eyes out. I think it’s important to note that this story begins with a whammy to the heart. Trigger warning for the death of a loved one.

Then the book jumps ahead several years to adult Laiken (h) working in her small town art gallery and having a solid friend group, while still experiencing pain and feeling somewhat adrift. She’s lost a lot but she’s also stronger for it, a trait I admire in my FMCs. Of course she’s also trying to cling still to some connections that might not be the healthiest. Enter Boden (H) in this small town. He’s a big Hollywood actor doing some prep for a movie but also needing time away from his own personal devastation (side note that this author always puts her characters through upheaval). Cue instant sparks and interest, but hesitations from Laiken. Boden’s willing to be present though and show his sincerity. His presence and support are great too because deaths start happening with a connection to the events from Laiken’s past. Then her reciprocal care of him is also crucial as he deals with elements of his own pain that he doesn’t want to face. The author layers in some hefty suspense, family drama, and several possible suspects to keep readers on their toes. Written in first person, dual POV. No ow/om drama (each has lost a young love though for those who have trouble with that trope, but both acknowledge that that love was different) and neither are virgins (very little info on both and unknown how long it’d been for each).

I liked Laiken a lot in how she’d survived all that was thrown at her and was still such a good person, but I also got frustrated with her. I think mostly because of how she interacted with side characters who were ugly about the past. I wanted her to be more firm with boundaries even as I knew she cared too much. I also liked Boden and how he was protective of Laiken and considerate. He didn’t act like a wealthy famous person and he’s a fixer as well, so wants to help make her life better. Their relationship was a little too easy though for me given their individual histories and their current circumstances. The romance is sweet and has some nice bonding, but also somehow felt shallow to me? I can’t put my finger on it. It is slow burn though and there is a small amount of steam.

This small town has a lot of important side characters (many of whom have also had significant drama themselves in the prior books). Nice female friendship group and supportive, but protective men. Some other characters are clearly there for positives with the main characters, some you just don’t know which way they’ll go, and others are assholes who deserve their comeuppance (one character who needed to be kicked had too quick of a turnaround and should have had to grovel, even if the situation that prompted his change of heart might have given him some necessary perspective). I loved seeing the H and h from the first book (which I read) and that that prior H played a large part in being a safety net for Laiken. Also, both Laiken and Boden have adorable pups with big personalities who shine in their scenes.

The suspense plot was twisty (and does include some violence). I wasn’t expecting what happened to go down so kudos to the author for surprising me. Thankfully there are a couple of time jumps at the end to transition from the crazy drama and action of the climax to the ending. The epilogue itself is 3 months out and felt a little like a bow tied on top when I wished for maybe some more of the harder talks in the transition chapters. Also, I wasn’t sure about a couple of glossed over updates, which weren’t critical but added to my feeling of something kind of feeling missing. It’s a HEA/HFN ending though and they’re very in love and starting their official life together, I just wanted slightly more. So while this wasn’t my favorite of this author’s I’ve read, it was still a good read that entertained me and swept me into the events of this small town.

There's only a handful of authors I have came across over the years that really make me sit back and say Holy Sh** this is phenomenal. The sweat, tears, and hours they put into a book is astounding. Catherine Cowles is one of those authors. Shattered Sea was breathtaking, real. Laiken and Boden (main characters) go through soo much turmoil. The heartaches, pain, mentally and physically ... I wouldn't wish upon anyone. But the ending. Bittersweet. Like always, I can't wait to see what's next.

note: i binge read this series in January. considering its been four months and the fact that basically every single book has the same formula, my memories were all tattered & torn. 🥴 however, i’d say that in general all the books have similar character backgrounds & trauma; the romance is a slow burn angst that somehow feels instalove and lacks depth/chemistry; the steam is mostly nonexistent/closed door; and the mystery/suspense plotline is wholly predictable. 🙃 i dont recommend this author UNLESS youre reading her books on audio while doing something else more productive. these books are good enough to pass the time and dont require much brain power, but theyre not interesting enough to leave lasting impression. 🙌

as for Shattered Sea specifically, from what i can recall i think . . . this one had the best suspense storyline. it was still OTT, but it felt more dangerous (hello, serial killer!) and less redundant/predictable. i didnt think i would enjoy this book because of the “Hollywood royalty” aspect, but this worked just like any other small town romance. i liked the romance mostly because the H was patient with the h, and he definitely fell for her first. there was also a chronic pain rep, which i appreciated. what had me in doubt was the h’s feelings for the H, considering she loved her dead ex so much and was still very close with his parents. i think it’d be more believable if she’d had rebounds or dated other people before the H. 🤷‍♀️ but overall, i think book 3 & 4 are my faves.

I really enjoyed everything about this book besides for the twist at the end when we found out who was behind the mystery in this story. (my whole review can be wrapped up in that once sentence, so I’m putting it first.)

But for more details and context… it was a pretty good romance between two damaged characters who were both dealing with similar things from their past and therefore saw the pain and struggles each other were feeling, and built a connection from that. I really enjoyed how their relationship felt very deep and emotion heavy… it really helped me connect to the characters and what they were going through. I also loved how he fell first and chased after her - but still gave her the space and time that she needed to be ready to let him in.

I also really enjoyed the whole suspence aspect… it kept me entertained and wanting to keep flipping the page — but what I didn’t like was how the ending came out of nowhere. It felt like she was building up and forshadowing this one character the entire time, but at the very last second decided to change her mind and make it someone else - but then try to make it work and make sense by giving us information and backstory after the fact of everything going down. It really pissed me off because I rather the story be predictable, but make sense and build up on itself cohesively - rather than surprise me but make absolutely no sense based off the first 85% of the book.

I still had a great time reading this though and thoroughly enjoyed everything up until that ending reveal. Plus the actual ending was good… a classic HEA - but the ending to the mystery… that really bothered me.

Holy freaking crap! Each time I read one of Ms. Cowles’ books I think it’s my favorite. And each new one changes that and becomes my favorite! This book. Just wow! I’ve adored Laiken since we first met her. And I’ve been intrigued by her since. The woman is one of the strongest there is. She’s been through the wringer for sure. And Boden. He’s just what our girl needs. This story, just my head is still spinning. I’ve prided myself on figuring out who the bad guy is in these books lately. Well, Catherine stumped me this time! So good and I love so much going back to this little town I love so much!

Catherine most definitely knew how to start this book with me shedding tears and my heart in shreds. That prologue kicked me right in the stomach and started the emotional rollercoaster that only added to my already tattered heart throughout the book.

After the small introduction to Laiken in the previous book it had me desperately wanting her whole story. My heart broke for everything Laiken went through and is still haunted by. She’s done her best to move on and live a fulfilling life, but memories of that night still plague her and remind her of what she’s lost. I found Laiken to be so strong, caring, and with the biggest heart and despite everything she’s endured she’s done her best to live life to the fullest.

Boden was a man who also was dealing with his own loss. Escaping to Wolf Gap because of his profession was exactly what he needed for some much needed peace. Though what Boden didn’t expect was to find Laiken, someone who can relate to the same pain he’s feeling and wanting nothing more than to protect her and keep her safe at all costs.

Laiken and Boden shared a connection that was undeniable. I loved the friendship they formed which ultimately turned to something more. I also loved how patient Boden was with Laiken and the fact that he didn’t push her and let her take all the time she needed. Laiken and Boden were perfect for each other and definitely meant for one another.

Shattered Sea was an emotionally beautiful story about opening yourself up to the possibility of a second chance at love. Laiken and Boden’s story was hopeful and heartfelt and just another exceptional addition to the Tattered & Torn Series.

Shattered Sea by Catherine Cowles was small-town romantic suspense perfection! Every trip back to Wolf Gap in the Tattered and Torn series has melted and mended my heart in many beautiful ways! Laiken and Boden’s journey to HEA was full of past heartache, learning to trust, hidden dangers, and intense passion that tugged at my heartstrings and made me feel all the things.

Ava Erickson and Sebastian York narrated this audiobook and were the perfect pairing for Laiken and Boden. Ava’s performance of Laiken’s determined and impassioned spirit was emotional and at times moved me to tears! I mean that prologue?! Sebastian portrayed Boden’s dedicated, loyal, and protective persona perfectly as he fell hard for Laiken! (Swoon!) Both narrators were fantastic in conveying Laiken and Boden’s slow-burn fiery chemistry.

Overall, I LOVED this audio. If you are a fan of small-town romantic suspense with a hunky hot movie star looking to lay low, a hopeful photographer healing from the past, overcoming tragedy, love, and loss, Wolf Gap, snow-capped mountains, a heroic town sheriff, mystery, danger, bitter family members, two adorable dogs, cozy cabin steamy times, an edge of your seat plot twist, and a HEA that will stitch your shattered heart back to together, then you will love Laiken and Boden’s story. I always look forward to more from Catherine Cowles.

catherine cowles did it again. i was so intrigued when i met laiken in hidden waters because she wasn’t part of the easton family and boden was from a complete different world but them together just fit perfectly since page number 1 and are a perfect fit for the easter clan. this book was soul wrenching and such an emotional rollercoaster it made me feel everything. it was full of emotions, heartbreak, suspense, sweetness and comfort. the epilogue made me tear up the found family is just everything. i can‘t and will never stop recommending this series.

i’m so excited for shiloh’s books i‘ve been waiting since forever and wanted her story since i have started the series. her and ramsey already stole my heart with that one scene.

Loss, heartache and emotional turmoil create a strong bond between the unlikely pair of Laiken, manager of an art gallery in the small town of Wolf Gap, and Boden, award winning Hollywood actor visiting Wolf Gap for research on a new movie.

I was sent an ARC of the audiobook and it’s absolutely amazing. I can’t recommend it enough. I have never experienced a prologue that wrecked me as much as this did, so from the very beginning, I was drawn into this story and totally intrigued all the way to the end. I shed more than a few tears, admired Laiken’s tenacity and Boden’s protectiveness, and held my breath more than once as tragedy and darkness from their pasts tried to infiltrate this couple’s present and future. This is an emotional read; I’m definitely in the “book hangover” zone from this one.

I didn’t expect the twist and my mind was going in another direction, so wow, Catherine, excellent storytelling once again! Oh and the dogs! Gizmo, Laiken’s chihuahua with wheels to help him get around and Peaches, the mutt Boden rescued from on set in Mexico, totally stole my heart. And that handsome sheriff, Hayes Easton, prominently featured in book #1, Tattered Stars, really melted my heart by his compassion toward Laiken in this story. Sigh. . . Yes, more tears.

This is book #4 of the Twisted and Torn series, each book a 5 star read and listen in my opinion. These are some of the most beautifully narrated books I’ve ever listened to, each will sweep you into the world of the Eastons of Wolf Gap. You’ll never want to leave.

Slowly but surely I feel like I am reading the same book in this series over and over again, just with different people.....
Will read the last book regardless though, because I am interested in Shiloh´s story

I love Boden and Laiken.. They are the perfect match and know each others past hurts and understands them. The relationship that they have is beautiful and pure love!
You will fall in love right along with them!!

I always love they way that Catherine can add that suspense to her stories that will have you on the edge of your seat when you are reading.

This book kept me guessing and I love when an author can do that! Catherine never fails to amaze me with her talent!
You don't want to miss out on this amazing story and the characters that are wonderful to read!

Best in Class for Romantic Thrillers!

I can't get enough of Catherine Cowles' books! Shattered Sea, the 4th book in the Tattered & Torn series, was so incredibly written! I was hooked immediately in the prologue! Laiken was just a teenager when her world as she knew it shattered, then she was shunned by the affected's family and in a small town, she had nowhere to hide. When Bowen comes to town, he and Laiken are drawn to each other but it takes Laiken time to truly open up; especially since her future can never look like the one she envisioned for so long.
As more and more tragedies take place and questions begin surrounding who could be responsible for them, I have to say, I was floored! You won't guess who the responsible party is, it's that well written!
Buckle up and enjoy the ride; such a great book!

Catherine Cowles has done it again. Another awesome book and it just might be that Boden and Laiken might be my new favorite couple. He has done a lot to bring her back to the living and out of her perpetual grief. There were a couple twists towards the end that I never saw coming.

I laughed and cried but OMG I almost spit out my drink when I read Gilly's definition of "fine" towards the beginning.

Oh my heart! Catherine Cowles definitely knows how to write a story that pulls on my heart strings and brings out the tears. Laiken & Boden’s journey was not easy, but worth it in the end. I was beyond captivated and I couldn’t put down this story.

Laiken & Boden were imperfectly perfect for each other and just what each other needed. I loved watching them find their way to each other. I loved that there was definitely heart, a little humor, and a little suspense.

I am so glad there is more to come in this series! I am not ready to leave these characters and their world behind.
