The best place to start

The fairest book I’ve read on the subject. Really concise without being glib or judgmental. The writing is good too.

This is brief and written in a very casual style, however I think that's actually the best style for introducing this topic. You don't need a very scholarly book to learn about the Santa Muerte cult if your intention is to worship her, because it's more about practice than theory. The author gives a lot explanations for why Santa Muerte is demonized and her followers are slandered (she is associated with drug dealers, marginalized and poor members of society, LGBTQ+ people and sex workers). She also represents death, an idea, rather than a person like other saints do. These are reasons why the Catholic Church may be uncomfortable with her, although some of her followers still consider themselves Catholic. The author also gives many compelling reasons for why Santa Muerte appeals to her followers. She is nonjudgmental, and she has the power to grant any request (even slightly illegal ones). She accepts people who are not accepted by anyone else, and she believes in second chances.

I will have to say I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book. I took the whole afternoon and finished it in one sitting. After years of doing research on Santa Muerte, I believe having this book would have answered a lot of my questions I had instead of hours pf research. This book I recommend if you want to know about Santa Muerte before diving head first. Gives the history, origin, and current situations involving her. Highly recommend as a starter book.
