In a world where fairies are bought and sold to the highest bidder, humans aren't exactly on friendly terms with the fae folk. But friendship is exactly what Anne Halford seeks with Challe, her new fairy bodyguard, though he's not so keen on the idea. As his new master, Anne tasks him with escorting her through a particularly dangerous area, but with a reluctant bodyguard eager to escape a life of servitude, she'll have to deal with a lot more than she bargained for...
Feen, Zuckerkonfekt, Romance & Spannung. Sehr sehr gut gelungener Auftakt. Bin verliebt! Instagram: @sandrasmangas
This is a manga adaptation of a light novel by Miri Mikawa. Anne is a young girl who has recently lost her mother. In order to pay proper respects to her, she wants to become a silver sugar master like her mother, so she needs to make a dangerous journey to the kingdom’s capital. For her safety, she purchases a fairy bodyguard.
Anne is a goodhearted girl who doesn’t feel comfortable with ordering him around, especially by torturing him with his cut-off wing she’s holding. But he’s not inclined to do anything unless she orders him, a constant battle between them as they journey. Little by little though, he begins to thaw.
Travelling with them is Jonathan, a boy from Anne’s village who wants to marry her, his fairy servant, and a fairy boy Anne rescued. They make a fun little group who face all sorts of obstacles. The biggest for Anne, however, is to learn that she might not have what it takes to become silver sugar master after all. The first volume ended with a cliff-hanger and I’m eager to read more.
Illustrations were lovely and suited the story well. But I would’ve really loved if they were in colour to make the most of the sugary fairy-tale.
I received a free copy from Edelweiss in exchange for an honest review.
This will be my review of the first volume of the manga Ginzatoushi To Kuro No Yousei - Sugar Apple Fairytale by Miri Mikawa and art by Alto Yukimura, containing chapters 1-5.5. The art had me genuinely captivated at the beginning more than anything else. This was one of those manga where I found myself instantly diving into reading it, immediately after finding it, and being unable to put it down. Everything about this manga feels like a real fairy tale, it's tailored perfectly to its title in art, story telling, characters, and choice of environment. It also feels a bit like if Berserk were a young girl's fairy tale story and journey opposed to tragedies upon tragedies and one man's unending nightmare.
I actually finished this a while back but forgot to post a review- this light novel was absolutely amazing (but it was no surprise because i love the anime that was made according to this book) I actually really recommend this even to non-anime watchers because the world building is perfection and the plot is twisty with romance, some thrill, darker themes that are perfectly brought out and of course a hint of magic here and there.
