Taibo II picks up where he left off in #2: writing another unique detective novel starring Mexico DF. While he plays with very clichéish elements (really like 40's and 50's detective stories), he gives them a very Mexican twist, and as I said, his novel ia really ABOUT Mexico. In this one, we see Mexico of the early-mid '80's, vs. the mid 70's Mexico of the first two novels. We can see a harsher edge, more organized crime, more of the unstoppable drug culture that became more prevalent. In 1975, ...more

In his Hector Belascoaran Shayne series, author Paco Ignacio Taibo II takes the classic archetype of the hard-boiled detective and transplants him to a Mexico City reeking of official corruption at every level. In the course of investigating a case for his sister's childhood friend Anita, Shayne runs afoul of a corrupt high level police commander. But in this book, Taibo pushes his imagination a step further and actually inserts himself as a character into the story as the novelist Paco Ignacio ...more

Once again, Héctor comes to the aid of a family friend. And once again, he's hard-boiled but vulnerable. Not in the emotional sense this time. In the second novel, once wounded, he walked away from "The girl with the ponytail" at the end, just as she was returning from a journey of self-discovery in Europe. Neither felt the need to remain faithful, apparently. For whatever reason, he walked away from her; once again, she's referenced in a note at the beginning, which finds our detective on a bea ...more

Paco Ignacio Taibo is a skilled Mexican historian and poet. He 19s written incredibly interesting narratives about the Mexican Revoloution, Che Guevera, and Stan Laurel ( yes that Stan Laurel of Laurel and Hardy fame).
His one-eyed protagonist, Hector Belascoaran Shayne of his Mexican detective novel series is no less insightful or patriotic. Like Taibo, he loves his patria. He lives between the the rhythms of Agustin Laura and Carlos Santana. He has a passion for the sticky sweet Mexican sodas s

Okurken bir an bile sıkılmadım. Osman Akınhay'ın çevirisi muhte ...more

Although Paco Ignacio Taibo II's crime novel, Some Clouds, was first published in Mexico (which makes sense because that's where it was written)back in 1985, I didn't finish it until last night,December 4, 2012, only 17 days before what some people say is the day the world ends, according to the Aztecs. Pursuant to that, let me tell you what a Mexican house painter recently told me about that Aztec December 21 end of the world date. He said lots of Mexican people believe December 21 will mark th ...more

Hector Belascoaran Shayne is not named after the gunman of the famous western 'Shane' but he is like him in that he is up against a gang of pure evil and corruption that is quite powerful. He also knows that the police are behind about seventy six percent of the serious crime in Mexico so it is hard to find any one to wear the white hat. It is a hard job but he is going to do it. He plans to avenge the brutal attack on a childhood friend and hopes to live to tell the tale.

This was my first exposure to Taibo and I loved it. This book was an extremely fast paced read - real efficient story telling. It's probably more of a 3 star mystery book, but the whole time I was reading it I couldn't help but think, "This is probably way more bad ass in Spanish." For that reason (no evidence or reasoning to explain that hunch) I bumped it up to 4 stars.

This was enjoyable in that it was the first time I read a book set in Mexico and detective novels are not my usual genre. It was a quick read.
