Rate this book
Regardless of where and how you live, your body is harboring dozens if not hundreds of toxins that could be sabotaging your health. Low on energy? Dealing with chronic illness? Having trouble losing weight? Toxins might be to blame. From your mattress to your toothpaste to your nonstick pans to the food you eat and the (bottled) water you drink-every day your body is bombarded with chemicals that can alter the way your body works, affecting its natural processes and capacity to heal and maintain vibrancy. Even though we are built to handle foreign substances effectively, our liver and other organs simply cannot cope with today's glut of toxins, many of which are too foreign and toxic for our bodies to manage well. This ultimately causes us to age prematurely, to gain weight, and to become more prone to disease. In The Detox Strategy, Brenda Watson, C.N.C.-the bestselling author of The Fiber35 Diet: Nature's Weight Loss Secret, a PBS mainstay, and an expert on internal cleansing and detoxification-introduces us to the revolutionary RENEW program (Reduce, Eliminate, Nourish, Energize, Wellness), which aids in reversing the effects of aging and rejuvenating the body and mind. The program offers a holistic approach to protecting and nurturing your body's innate purification physiology. The result is a higher quality of life, more energy, and longevity. The Detox Strategy reveals: -The truth about where toxins come from and how they affect our bodies -How toxins can accelerate the aging process by causing poor health and chronic disease -How to determine your individual level of toxic exposure and the steps you can take to reduce it -Why efforts to cleanse and detoxify the body are an essential part of enhancing one's energy and vitality and preserving overall health -How maintaining a cleaner, more vibrant body can affect longevity The Detox Strategy includes a detailed herbal supplement plan for gently flushing out harmful toxins-including heavy metals like lead and mercury-plus delicious original recipes for nourishing meals that further promote detoxification. The Detox Strategy teaches cleansing concepts that are researched and clinically proven, and it provides you with the necessary tools to live in a purer and more energized body. I consider myself a healthy, active and generally a clean eating person. But lets face it. No one's perfect. So once a year I do an Ayurvedic cleansing fast. This spring I picked up The Detox Strategy by Brenda Watson and came away with a lot more ideas on how to make positive lifestyle changes that I can continue practicing throughout the year.

In my previous cleanses, I altered my diet for two to three weeks eliminating dairy, caffeine, alcohol and processed foods. The Detox Strategy focuses not only on healthy diet including some great recipes, but it also gives many practical tips on cleaning up your own environment by using eco-friendly cleaning products, air and water purifiers and being aware of toxins in personal care products. It gives detailed information on what to look for in vitamin mineral and herbal supplements. Foods to be avoided are specified with well grounded rationale.

Physical activity, meditation and adequate sleep are also a big part of the well-rounded program. The plan is presented in an easy-to-follow way. Initially, I went through a bit of adjustment such as caffeine withdrawal headaches and decreased energy. But in the end I felt the program was beneficial. More importantly, I feel I've made some improvements in my everyday routine that I intend to continue long after the detox is over.

I would highly recommend this book even if you do not wish to follow the herbal detox program. It contains very helpful information abut how to make your family's life a little greener.

This book provides a pretty solid introduction to the effects of toxins on the body and solutions on how to deal with that for a fairly healthy person. It's not terribly in-depth and the author endorses some questionable techniques, such as colon hydrotherapy, but most of the information provided is sound.

I hoped being on PBS would set this book apart from the wack-o informercials, but Watson consistantly lays down two truths and tries to make connections that aren't there. For example, early on she had a diagram of a pastoral setting , cows grazing, a city can be seen over the hill smoke belching and the diagram shows the rain washing all the smoke, cow waste, pesticides, etc into the water....true.

Next are statistics from the World Health organization stating the millions of cases of sickeness from environmental causes..True statistics.

But her implcation is her readers in Western society are the entirety of these statics. Maybe some are, but I think most of the cholera, dysentary, etc is in third world and developing nations...Not on the farm outside out cities.

Couldn't take this book seriously.

PS The copy I picked up did not have the "anti-aging" part in the title. That would have tipped me off this is a crock of..."

Just making some of the changes she suggests helps a lot. It is a great reference source. Not a book you can just sit through and read cover to cover for hours - there's a lot of information to digest. I'm definitely keeping it for references of items I don't want in my food, cosmetics, cleaners, etc.

A detailed description of our toxic world and how to minimize the harmful effects on our bodies. There could be some who would become overwhelmed by the information and thus cast the whole resource out. There were great tips on how to economically and logically change our health.

I got hooked on Brenda Watson several years ago on PBS. I have to say, her books are very well researched and I find the information she provides to be extremely comprehensive in that she doesn't just tell you what you should be doing, but why and what the impact to your body will be.

This book was interesting and informative. I found many of the tips to be daunting however. It was good to be thinking about all the many chemicals in our lives, even small changes and awareness are a start.

Good information about toxins and bio-accumulation, then how to get rid of the toxins. Paints a picture that her products are the best way, but overall useful information.

Many practical tips -- more like a reference book, rather than a sequential novel
