I was so honored to receive an advanced copy of “Snow: The First White Christmas” to review. I’m not familiar with other Timeless Tales Press publications, so I was excited to delve into “Snow”.
“Snow: The First White Christmas” is a bit of an origin story. Once upon a time, there was no such thing as snow; not at the North Pole, not for Christmas, not at all. A little elf named Snow would change all that, though. Snow has a playful spirit, kind heart, and deep determination to not let Santa down. In fact, he’s so dedicated to making this Christmas the best Christmas ever he completely wears himself out, and takes a nap so deep I was quite envious.
At first read, my heart hurt for Snow. He had done his very best, dedicated so much time towards his goal, and things don’t turn out at all as he hoped. Poor Snow is crushed.
Good thing I like to read children’s books at least three times before reviewing. (I find you pick up on things initially missed – especially with tiny hands darting at pages, and little voices asking many, many questions.) After my second read, I began to see another side to this sweet story.
Sometimes we do everything right. We dedicate the time, put in the effort, check all the boxes, and things still don’t go our way. As a Type A planner, it is deeply frustrating to know I’ve done everything within my power, and things sometimes still don’t work out right. It’s in those moments I have to decide how I’m going to move forward. I can allow myself time to grieve, but then what? Was it all time wasted, or can something beautiful come from the disappointment? In Snow’s case, something wonderful, even magical, comes from his initial sorrow, and ultimately turns his tears into laughter.
“Snow: The First White Christmas” feels deeply nostalgic to me, but I cannot put my finger on why. Perhaps it’s the stunning watercolor illustrations by Katrin Budeeva that feel deeply reminiscent of my childhood. Each page has such stunning detail, and, quite honestly, the illustrations were my favorite part of the book. Whimsical is the word that keeps coming to mind as I flip through these lovely pages.
“Snow” is a sweet Christmas book, that offers parents a chance to talk to their children about hard work, disappointment, and recognizing the beauty amongst the two.
Thanks to Timeless Tales Press for the opportunity. “Snow: The First White Christmas” was released November 8, 2021.
Living in the Southern Hemisphere our Christmas’ are hot, spent in shorts, t-shirts, or swimmers, not rugged up winter jumpers, scarves, and hats. Regardless, we still celebrate Christmas with many of the same traditions, beliefs and symbols as our Northern neighbors, a big part of which is the role Santa, his elves and reindeers play in the magic of making and delivering presents across the world. Even to us, it wouldn’t be right if Santa didn’t have his warm red suit, there weren’t images of fireplaces aglow or Rudolph didn’t have his bright red nose.
Snow: The First White Christmas whisks us away to that place at the North Pole that we have all dreamt of. The one where the magic of Christmas is being prepared by the Elves all year round.
Snow, the main character in the book could be any little boy or girl who has looked forward to something that it’s all they can think about. The journey of Snow’s emotions through the story are so strong that, as readers, we feel them along with him. From the pure elation of being chosen to do the one thing he has always dreamed of doing, to the unflagging determination to prove that the faith in him was justified, the absolute devastation of missing out on his much-anticipated adventure to the realization that he was responsible for the miracle of snow – the Elf and the flakes that would impact Christmas for years to come.
This delightful book is one that earns it’s place on the Christmas bookshelves and be included In the selection of books read to children in the lead up to Christmas.
I was given an advanced reader copy from the publisher. Here is my honest review. Watch my review on Instagram @parithebookworm There was a time when there was no snow on Christmas. Can you believe that but yes there was snow an elf named Snow. He worked very hard on a Christmas and was supposed to accompany Santa in his wagon to distribute toys. But at the last moment he fell into a deep slumber. When he woke up he found that Santa was gone. What do you think what happens next? How was snow named after Snow the elf and how it started snowing every Christmas ever since that year.
Written by E W Rhodes and magnificent illustrations by Katrin Katerok . Those illustrations will make you travel back to time and makes it a timeless classic.
It will make a perfect holiday gift to be cherished for years to come.
Great for a cozy Christmas! You know what makes a good Christmas story? It’s the magic it gives the listeners or readers. And this tale is just that: full of magic and joy! If you’ve never read any of Rhodes’ works, you’ll be amazed at the universe he creates. If you have read his other books, you’ll be even more delighted, as this story is nothing short of remarkable! Joining Santa at the North Pole we get to see how Christmas ended up having the magical show of snow. I think old tales are lovely around Christmas, but a story as this one is definitely a breath of fresh air and it can easily become a classic. It will captivate you with its warmth and coziness and it’s going to be a blast to read this on Christmas Eve!
I’ve found another book to add to my Winter collection!
Snow: The First White Christmas written by E.W. Rhodes and illustrated by Katrin Budeeva tells the story of how the first Christmas snow began! Snow, a hardworking elf with dreams of helping Santa deliver toys, worked so hard that he slept through Christmas! When he awoke to realize he had missed his chance, he was devastated. His resulting tears filled the world with snow. Once, he saw the joy that came from snow, his tears turned to laughter and the snow kept falling.
Snow learns the joys of hard work, that hard work is best balanced with a little play, and that beauty can come when least expected. This will be a wonderful addition to our seasonal books, and I look forward to reading this story year after year.
