The Bering

A crew of 47 aboard an Alaskan fishing boat ominously nicknamed “The Danger Ranger” had been counting on a final run deep into the Bering Sea as a last-ditch effort to save a mediocre fishing season. Before ever arriving, they had to abandon ship in 32-degreewater amidst 20-foot swells and driving snow. Their last hope? A cook making the key calls, a helicopter running out of fuel, and a rookie rescue swimmer who had never saved anyone in open water. On one level, this is the true-life story of the Alaska Ranger sinking and of the rescue that followed - the most daring in the history of the Bering. Below the surface, however, lies a story that is about guilt and bravery, pain and pride, and both the worst but most importantly the best of who we are.

Ever since I read The Perfect Storm some decades ago, I have been interested in accounts of real-life catastrophe. (Heck, maybe it really goes back to those “Scouts in Action” articles in Boy’s Life Magazine. The Bering fits well into this proud tradition, recounting the sinking of The Ranger Danger in the winter in arctic conditions. It’s frankly remarkable that anyone was able to be rescued. That so many survived boggles the mind.

Flynn interviews many of the rescuers and the survivors in this podcast and it’s impossible not to be moved by their experiences. You can’t catch the emotion in a voice on the printed page, but when you hear these people describe their struggles and how the crisis is still with them today, it’s utterly remarkable

Audible Review - WOW, if you have not had the opportunity to listen to this podcast, I cannot recommend this highly enough. I listened to all 5 in a row, didn't want to stop. Mr. Flynn did an excellent job of writing, narrating and putting this together. I loved it; the sound effects were perfect. This one is easily going into my top 10 reads of the year. I didn't think you could get any better than The Perfect Storm but this one takes the cake. Great listen!! High 5 stars.

This was an excellent story of the largest Coast Guard rescue of a less than ship shape fishing vessel named the Ranger Danger and it's 47 men. Many of the participants, both crew and Coast Guard tell their stories of the encounter. You feel for everyone, those who lived and died. For me, my heart goes out to the Coast Guard staffer who lost a rescue through no fault of his own, the man was too far gone, and blames himself for the loss. I would love to give him a hug and tell him it wasn't his fault. Outstanding podcast story, beautifully presented.

Amazing piece of documentary journalism. Great to hear about an industry and a group of people I knew nothing about. I have a lot of respect now for Alaskan fishermen and it made me think harder about the seafood I eat. The production on this is also incredible. The sound effects make you feel like you are there. I'm very surprised more people haven't listened to this. Maybe Audible needs to promote it more.

If you have an audible subscription you really need to listen to this. An exciting, suspenseful and engaging listen with a podcast feel and many true life voices which give the feeling of being there on scene. Amazing, truly!
