Her husband Harry is away in the army, and over the next five years she experiences the very worst that war has to offer.As they settle into their new home, she realizes that the Hertfordshire town is not such a safe option after all.
Then along comes Edward; a young pilot who proves a good friend in unexpected circumstances. As Sandra becomes more and more fond of him, Germany prepares to launch their assault on London... and their lives will change forever.
The Second World War was a time of major upheaval for children in Britain. Over a million were evacuated from towns and cities and had to adjust to separation from family and friends. Many of those who stayed, endured bombing raids and were injured or made homeless. All had to deal with the threat of gas attack, air raid precautions (ARP), rationing, changes at school and in their daily life.For some, the war was a time of fear and confusion that meant separation from families, the destruction of a home or even the loss of a parent. However, for others, these years were the most exciting and happiest time of their lives.
After the fall of France in the summer of 1940, there was a real fear that Britain would be invaded. The Channel Islands were occupied by the Nazis in early July. Shortly afterwards, the German Blitzkrieg happened.Families in southern and eastern England were felt to be on the front line. More children were evacuated, often from areas where they had previously been sent for safety. Many of those who remained witnessed the dramatic aerial dogfights between British fighter aircraft and German bombers during the Battle of Britain.
Standards of wartime housing in Britain ranged from dilapidated tenement slums to stately homes. Many families still had outside lavatories and no bathroom.Children often shared beds with siblings or parents.Many homes were destroyed by bombing.There was no safe place during wartime for anyone,no matter where you were situated.You just had to hope and make do.

This is a story about a family during WWII. They live in London but the Nazi bombing begins and they end up moving into a house that was up for temporary use. The father ends up becoming a cook for the military and is away the vast majority of the time.
Bobby is the narrator of the story and he's 10. Paula, his sister, is around four. The story is about them trying to survive and dealing with the rationing system, bombs that do become too close and eventually the V1 and V2 rockets.
Bobby tries to find things to do and sometimes gets in trouble for it, although once he becomes an actual hero.
The way the story is written is in chapters that deal with certain months and years so the reader gets a good idea of how the flow of the war goes and how people react to news both good and bad. There's various personal problems that arise, of course, and the mother goes into a major depresison for a while.
It's an interesting book.

Great Book
This is a great book to read. It’s a five star all the way. Such a great story. It makes you aware of how things were during the war.
