Darius:

"This is why I never contacted you. I still have no control around you. You want me to tell you I haven’t thought of you? That would be a damned lie. Wherever I’ve been, whatever I’ve done, I haven’t stopped thinking of you. You are always there.”

Nell:

Once, I was convinced that my feelings for Darius, my love for him, were pure and real. I fought against all his perceptions of wrongness.

But that was four years ago. If I still can’t find pleasure in even the thought of kissing another man, maybe my feelings for Darius have gotten twisted and warped. Maybe they’re obsessive.

Maybe they’re wrong.

Well we were dying for the second installment and practically begging for more and we definitely got an eyeful and then some. If you left the first book thinking that you're going to get a slow passionate reunion with hearts and flowers, then you are in for one rude awakening.

It’s been four years since Nell has seen Darius and from that time, she’s grown into a stronger independent woman who is trying to navigate a career. They say time heals all wounds but for Nell and Darius, seeing each other again after all this time is like ripping it wide open. When they’re in each other's paths for a completely different reason, temptation won't be the only thing that these two will have to face.

I really don't want to give anything away with this story but I will say that I was not expecting these turn of events. We were heavily deep into a type of storyline that felt so traumatic in a sense because you know that these things happen in real life and you want nothing more than to close your eyes and pretend that they don't exist but they do.

Even though this storyline was a bit more heavier than I anticipated, I still loved the journey. Nell and Darius went through hell and they fought and sacrificed for each other when it was needed. Their love was dangerous and beautiful and I really can't wait to see what their ending is going to look like.

If you haven't started this series yet, I highly recommend that you do.

-"Wherever I've been, whatever I've done, I haven't stopped thinking of you. You are always there."

D1980485-173F-4C66-A5AA-0EE15AFAA55F

Nell Fairchild graduated high school and moved from a small town in California to NYC four years ago for a fresh start. After feeling trapped by circumstances she'd broken free of her past and was charting her own path and living on her own terms. She'd made a good life for herself and now knew who she was. She made new friends, was pursuing a career in art, and trying to move on and get over her heartbreak when she crosses paths again with the man of her dreams. She'd loved Darius Hawke for so long and memories of the guarded beautiful man still haunted her. He'd always been such a big part of her life, but when all communication was severed she tried to forget him. She'd forgotten how everything else just faded into the distance when he was near. His intense presence was overwhelming and all consuming. He captivated her and caused her to crave more. She still wanted a man society would think is inappropriate for her, but she understands him, and he makes her feel safe and more alive than she's ever felt. Will she finally have everything her heart desires, or will the man embedded in her heart forever be just out of her reach?

Darius Hawke is a war photographer that works in the most dangerous places in the world documenting war, violence and conflict, but his biggest source of turmoil is inside himself. He struggles with wanting the one woman he can't have. He can't seem to outrun her or stop thinking about her. Nell makes him feel out of control with one touch. They have a complicated history and he decides to walk away from her and live with his choices, but when passion is unleashed and he surrenders to desire will it be possible to just live in the moment? He's crossed a line and isn't sure he can ever go back. Will he finally accept he's incapable of resisting her and the bond they share?

-I could be anywhere in the world-in a desert, on a mountaintop, in the middle of the ocean-and all I'd have to do is close my eyes to remember that gentle touch, like he's holding something valuable.

-The reality of Darius Hawke, his everlasting presence in my life, is so much better than the flimsy dreams that have sustained me for four years. No matter what happens between us, he will always be there. He will always come to me.

Feather and Flame was the most action-packed, nail-biting, sitting on the edge of my seat novel Nina Lane has ever written, and I relished every tense and passionate moment.

That WOW ending of Hawke and Sparrow left us hanging with Darius Hawke blowing my mind and sending my head spinning. However, the ending also had me curious and anxious to immediately jump in and read Feather and Flame.

Note there is a time jump in this installment. Four long years have passed, and both main characters changed during their separation. (I was delighted and relieved for it as there was a sizeable age difference, and I felt more comfortable with Nell being in her twenties). During their time apart, Nell has grown into a lovely and savvy woman, living in New York City, ready to start her career, while Darius continued his travels as a photojournalist. Circumstances have these two crossing paths, and Darius becomes drawn to her when Nell embarks on a new and exciting internship.

In this installment, we see the true beginnings of their beautiful relationship as a couple and how they were destined to find true love. The chemistry between these two certainly ignited. All the passion and pent-up tension which consumed them finally unleashed and exploded. It was incredibly romantic! Feelings could no longer be ignored or denied, and I adored them together - each providing the other with immeasurable love, tenderness, guidance and strength.

I loved seeing how both main characters grew and evolved. Nell came into her own as a sophisticated and exemplary young woman. She matured significantly and became more tenacious and courageous. I admired all of her grit and determination. Nell had a strong backbone but a loving heart, especially when it came to Darius.

Darius pulled on my heartstrings as his character suffered greatly in the past, and without giving any spoilers, it affected him in many ways. But thanks to Nell, he found the strength to persevere. It was his moment of triumph. Darius gloriously opened up tremendously after surrendering to his heart's desires. As the secrets of his past began to unravel, I fell deeper in love with him. I do feel there's more of him to discover; he's such a fascinating and multi-faceted character. He's a true hero to me in every sense of the word - overly passionate, fiercely protective, and self-sacrificing - all for the woman he loves. Darius came a long way, and holy moly, what he pulled off towards the end had my head spinning (AGAIN) and longing for the last installment.

There's so much going on that each turn of the page was heart-stopping exciting. And a new cast of characters introduced, some I despised, but most I've come to adore, especially Alexi, Sofia and the twins - they hold a special place in my heart.

Five magnificent stars!! Nina Lane has outdone herself in book two, and I can't wait to see how this all turns out in the finale, Wishes & Wings!!

Please note this book is part of a trilogy, and I highly recommend reading these installments in series order.

**Spoiler Free – Complete Trilogy Review**

‘His photos are harrowing, indelible images of history saturated with everything human – love, pain, grief, violence, fear. No one can look at a Darius Hawke photo and not feel a thousand emotions.’

We absolutely adore Nina Lane; her writing is magnificent and her characters incredibly engaging. Her stories carry us away emotionally and we instantly become completely swept away with her words. Once again, this Author has written an absolutely epic love story that’s utterly romantic, exquisitely beautiful, unbearably harrowing, and thrillingly suspenseful.

‘I’m his. I’m the woman who loves everything about him, from his most excruciating pain to his greatest pleasures. I fault him nothing. I would drink his darkest secrets, no matter how poisonous.’

We first meet Nell Fairchild at eighteen years old. Despite her young age, she’s truly an old soul. Tired and weary, she’s following a path that is not of her choosing. Hiding in the shadows, expressing her truth through her art. Innocent, fearful, invisible, and lonely. We wept at her tragic childhood and despaired at her ‘clipped wings’. Whilst we understood the motive behind the overprotective behaviour of Nell’s dad, after all, she’s all he has left, we felt indignant on her behalf. She was a flower ready to bloom whilst bathed in loving sunlight. What is more poignant than the beauty of light that comes from the purity of love?! Nell is surprisingly strong and level-headed once she gathers her inner courage and fighting instinct. It’s amazing what the right person can ignite in you, that which has lied dormant waiting to come alive from a spark.

‘Darius Hawke is part of my blood, my heart, the very center of all my secret places where longings, wishes, and dreams take root.’

Darius Hawke is a complex man who seeks out danger and photographs the worst and the most heart-breaking of humanity. Nell’s father’s best friend: a traveller, a prisoner of war, and a survivor, Darius has seen Nell grow up but is not prepared for the adult Nell when he returns four years later. We fell in love with Darius’s character. A beautiful soul, a brave soul, and a loving soul. He stole our hearts. He fought so hard for what he thought was right when it came to Nell, but the heart wants what it wants and who can deny that which the heart beats for?!

“You,” I whisper, “are every yes I’ve ever had. All the yeses I’ve kept locked inside me, waiting for the moment I could give them to you. Waiting for now.”

The way in which Nina Lane wrote this convincing love story between Nell and Darius, who had a twenty-ish years age gap, is quite simply unique. It could have gone completely pear-shaped and feel somewhat icky. But in no way, shape or form did we feel uncomfortable -rather- we wholeheartedly felt and experienced the love between two kindred spirits, two hearts and two souls meant to be as one. It was a stunning yet arduous journey!

‘…how will he ever know any light if he keeps going back endlessly into the dark?’

We always worry about trilogies, more often than not we feel it could have been two books, that dreaded ‘filler book’ syndrome, however, not so in this case. Whilst Sparrow and Hawke slowly and quietly introduces us to the characters, offering up snapshots of Nell and Darius’s past lives and their somewhat ‘taboo’ love affair, it also sets the scene for what’s to come in Feather and Flame. The pace and story literally explode in Feather and Flame and we felt deeply affected for so many reasons. You’ll know what we mean when you read it, or if you have already. In fact, it felt so realistic our hearts broke and our eyes shed copious tears. As for Wishes and Wings, well…this book packed quite the angsty, heart-breaking, and emotional punch. What we loved about this trilogy is how we felt a part of Nell and Darius’s lives, individually as well as together. Through tragedy, hardship, love, war, and finally peace. We walked alongside them, through thick and thin as we explored their past which ultimately shaped their ‘today’. We wept, laughed, swooned, and loved. We experienced heartbreak, pain, love, as well as true happiness. This series must be read in order as it spans years and has a continuing storyline. We were completely riveted by the stunning EPIC Birdsong trilogy beautifully penned by Nina Lane. She really is a magnificent storyteller!

‘Sometimes courage comes from fear of what might have been…’

OMFG. That ending. My heart. 😭💔

Nina Lane continues to impress with her gift for creating the most captivating characters who steal my whole heart.

Feather & Flame picks up four years after Sparrow & Hawke and it was a complete emotional roller coaster.

Nell is older, wiser, and still completely in love with Darius. Darius is still tormented by his guilt and stubborn as ever.

Unexpected circumstances lead to Nell and Darius being stuck together in the same country that holds painful memories for Darius and with danger looming they finally give in to their feelings. However, things are never easy for these two and they must fight not only for their love but for their lives .

The ending left me breathless, and I cannot wait to dive right into Wishes & Wings, the final book in the Birdsong Trilogy.

I’m so sad I have to rate this 2 stars cause I’m a huge fan of this author but book 2 Feather & Flame was not the book for me. After finishing book 1 I was so excited to get back with Nell and Darius. The foundation and deep emotional connection was the driving point and in this book the emotional connection and chemistry was just gone.

For the first half of the book they only shared a few conversations and the tension and chemistry was nowhere to be seen or felt. Then the second half was just book 1 in a different setting with Darius struggling with his inner demons and how he viewed himself in regards to Nell.
Nell had definitely grown emotionally and mentally. Found her voice and stood her ground with Darius. The ending wasn’t surprising it was predictable.

Sadly Feather & Flame didn’t live up to my expectations and that’s how it is with books. Still I’m sitting with disappointment cause this story had so much potential. Sigh…

“You are the only thing that makes perfect sense in this world.”

5 stars!

Oh my God, what the hell did I just read? My heart is racing, my head is spinning, and I’m caught up in SO many feels. Nina Lane has taken me on a swoony, passionate, angsty and intense rollercoaster that is full of surprises, and it’s such a phenomenal read!

This is the second book in The Birdsong Trilogy, an angsty, emotional and intense forbidden love story between a young woman and her father’s best friend. The story is perfectly set up in the first book of the trilogy, Sparrow & Hawke (read my review), and all of those feelings and intensity are immediately recaptured as we meet up with them four years after they said their goodbyes at the end of the first book.

Nell is now a college graduate, living in NYC and looking for work. She’s not having any luck, but she’s determined to stand on her own two feet and find her way. Meanwhile, Darius has spent four years travelling the world, hurling himself into warzones and other dangerous situations in an attempt to outrun his demons, and his feelings for Nell. When they unexpectedly run into each other again, it doesn’t go well, but holy damn, the feels!

“We’re not doing this again.”
“No, we’re not doing it
again because I’m a different person now.”
“I’m not.”
“Good. Because I only ever wanted the man you are.”

Nell continues to blow me away with her strength and bravery in letting Darius know what she wants. And when he brutally rejects her yet again, she pulls herself up and gets on with her life – this time travelling to embrace new opportunities. But when she finds herself in danger, Darius runs to her side to help, and the two of them end up stuck together in the last place on earth Darius wants to be, and on the edge of disaster.

I won’t say anything more than that, because you just need to jump in and experience this book and all of its wonderful twists and turns. I thought it was a fantastic direction for the story to go, and loved every moment of Nell’s new adventure, and Darius’ return to her life in such extreme circumstances.

“Even though years can pass without us talking to each other, I’m always aware of you in the world. I always know you’re here. And I will always drop everything and run to you if I think you need help, even if you don’t want me to. Maybe that’s overstepping or whatever you want to call it, but it’s the truth. I will always come to you.”

And with the two of them pretty much locked away from their real lives, away from external judgement and in completely new and intense circumstances, all of their feelings are impossible to ignore.

He presses his forehead to mine. I stare into his eyes, oceans deep. If we are given only one certainty in life, one inviolable truth, then this is mine. He is mine.

I need her, the woman whose entire life is woven into the loops of my memory. My heart can’t beat without her.

Finally, we get to see the love story that the first book hinted at. I anticipated epic, and Nina Lane delivered, with an emotional, swoony, passionate romance that absolutely owned my heart. Nell and Darius are absolutely beautiful together, and I revelled in every moment of them finally exploring their feelings for each other.

This
This is what I’ve been missing, what I’ve been searching for, what I feared I would never find. But of course, he’s the one who had it all along.

They still have some issues to work through – mostly with Darius coming to terms with his feelings for Nell, how all-consuming they are, and what it means for both of their futures, but regardless of all of that, I loved watching him fall so damn hard.

“I’ve seen wrongness. I’ve done and felt more wrong things than I can count. But what I feel for you has never been one of them … It’s the most genuine, pure thing I’ve ever known.”

Nell is there for him every step of the way – supporting Darius, guiding and encouraging him, and she holds nothing back from him as she fights so hard for the man she loves.

“I’ve been loving you from a distance for the past four years. I love you still.”

But the danger that keeps Darius on edge is very real, and soon they are forced to face it head on. In scenes that had me holding my breath, the final chapters had me madly flipping pages, unable to stop reading and desperate to know what was going to happen. I cried, I ached, and felt so much, and I was completely swept up in the intensity of the story. There’s a cliffhanger, and it’s brutal, but thank God, Lane has moved up the release date of the third and final book in the trilogy so we don’t have too long to wait to see how it’s all going to end.

“The path doesn’t always stay the same. It veers off in different directions or gets blocked…or sometimes it just disappears altogether. So you have to find it again or make a new one.”

I absolutely adored this book. The characters, the setting, the romance, and the secondary storyline are fantastic, and are all woven together brilliantly to create a completely engaging read that I feel like I lived with Nell and Darius. Reading this book was an experience, and I cannot wait for more of Nell and Darius’ story.

5 phenomenal stars!

4-4.5 stars. This next installment was a page turner, packed with action, suspense and heart pounding moments especially in the second half of the story. Four years later and Nell is paving her own path, not the one that her father laid out for her. In the process, she has become more independent and confident, but also aware of the opportunities in the world around her, not all of it pleasant. Darius hasn't sought her out so Nell feels his absence like an empty cavity inside until they run into each other as a chance encounter.

As one thing leads to another, leaving Nell with few options despite Darius' insistence on helping her, she seizes the chance to go overseas and volunteer. This is where Nell really soars in her own personal growth, discovering what it's like to be in a foreign land and to appreciate the beauty of life and art amidst hardship and simplicity. She's in a post-war torn area of Europe that is slowly rebuilding and even though she is a temporary visitor, she feels a place like home amongst the villagers.

Darius' appearance is equal parts elation and heartbreaking for Nell given their murky past. Darius might have kept his distance for reasons that Nell thought were ridiculous, but he's a complex man who is selfless and determined. He still has demons which haunt him and he also acts with purpose towards counterterrorism. When it comes to Nell, he is gentle and kind, but also possessive and unrelenting and they are perfect for one another.

The relationship takes off where they can set aside their worries and labels to truly participate in the buried feelings that have resurfaced. It's both beautiful and tragic under the circumstances, to be free to explore but with the knowledge of an expiration date. The impending cloud of despair lingers and while I certainly did not expect this turn of events, it was exciting and page turning to realize that Nell and Darius' love could be the thing that either saves them or dooms them. That last scene is heartbreaking, knowing the weight of everything bearing down upon them and that survival is key. I cannot wait to see how they both emerge on the other side of this because they absolutely have to.

Nina Lanes' Feather & Flame is an all-engrossing read and kept me entertained and on tenterhooks. The second book in the Birdsong Trilogy picks up on Nell and Darius' lives four years after the end of Sparrow and Hawke and finds our hero and heroine in different parts of the world, Nell in New York City and Darius overseas. As always (truly, ALWAYS!), Nina Lane delivers a heartfelt character-driven story filled with complex emotions and situations.

When the story opens, Nell is contemplating her job prospects as a newly graduated student from the Art Institute, and the prospects are dim in the competitive art world in NYC. Nells' character growth is exhilarating and inspirational. She's grown more confident and self-assured, and this propels her to pursue a volunteer opportunity in Krasnovar. She finds herself engrossed in the small town of Varaz, with a cast of locals who quickly bring Nell into their fold.

The story intensifies and we see the reunion of Nell and Darius. They have such a strong push and pull and the intensity is quickly intuited by everyone who shares space with them. The story is told from both of their points of view which is such a wonderful way to get a feel for each character and their mindset. Nell is cautiously optimistic about her place in his life and Darias' reluctance is pushed aside as the overwhelming need for each other, the life-altering soul-deep connection will not be denied.

Everything about this story is smart and the plot is perfectly executed. The imagery evoked is stunning and the time and place was easy to picture. By the end of this book I was ready to jump into book 3 Wishes & Wings, and so I did. I spent a glorious day completely in the world of Nell and Darius, rooting for them to find their way to and with each other. 5 Stars and recommendation.

Darius and Nell are back in Feather & Flame (Birdsong Trilogy #2) and I devoured this book within a matter of hours. This book is so much more than I anticipated. Darius and Nell sucked me in with their drama and angst which nearly did me in. If there was ever a couple who were truly meant to be together, it’s definitely these two. Nell is older and she’s matured since Sparrow & Hawke (Birdsong Trilogy#1) and she’s grown into a more beautiful, confident woman. I’m proud of her strength and feisty personality and the fact that she knows what she wants and she pursues it. I appreciate the fact that Nina Lane gives Nell’s character as well as Darius’s character the opportunity to flourish as it without a doubt brings more to this intriguing and engaging storyline. Although Darius is still cautious and defensive about his underlying feelings for Nell, there’s undeniable chemistry and it’s obvious that his feelings for her have never died and they tug at his heartstrings like nothing else.

Darius and Nell’s romantic turmoil is epic and in the midst of that, they’ve now found themselves in a life threatening situation. The action and angst had me biting my nails and on the edge of my seat. And despite their circumstances, their relationship grows beautifully with intense passion and heat. Their bond and connection is indescribable. With that said, I enjoyed every single moment as it was unexpected in a good way and unpredictable. Thank goodness Feather & Flame is not the end and their forbidden love continues in the final book, Wishes & Wings.

Action Packed Romance!

In this second book of her trilogy, Nina Lane gives her readers some major action along with a side of romance for Darius and Nell. This review may spoil the first book.

It’s been four years. Four years since the kiss and Nell is a woman I hardly recognize anymore. She’s grown up so much and it was great to see. Our girl is in New York now, living on her own and making her way in the world. I was proud to read that Nell moved away from her father and finally did what she wanted for herself. Darius is always on her mind, which is why she’s still single. Having dated here and there, nobody compares to him. New York is a big city, but not big enough tv keep these two apart.

Darius is and has always been stuck between a rock and a hard place when it comes to Nell. She’s his best friend’s daughter and also the woman he loves. He’s been trying his best to stay away, however when he sees her again, all bets are off. He’s back to square one with his feelings for Nell, even though he can’t have her.

Nell decides to do something completely out of her comfort zone and something that ends up taking Darius to get out of. We learned a lot about his past and this time around we get to really see what he’s made of. Plus, our little romance propels forward, which I hoped for.

The book is well written and as detailed as ever, something I love about Nina Lane’s writing. We are all in with Nell and Darius and I sure hope there’s some light at the end of the tunnel for them in the next book.

ARC Review of Feathers & Flame by Nina Lane (Book 2 in the Birdsong Trilogy)
* * * * *
I am addicted to this Trilogy. If I thought this taboo whirlwind attraction couldn't be filled with more drama, I was wrong.
Fast forward 4 years after the conclusion of the first book, Nell is struggling in New York and her issues only get crazier when she runs into Darius. Hurt and pride gone, she decides to go something meaningful...and dangerous.
With Darius we follow him to get Nell out of a sticky situation, only to end in running wild emotions nd confliction...and an epic cliffhanger.
Can't wait for book 3.

I stayed up late reading this one last night. I figured it would probably be better to do that in case I needed to cry (which I did) and I didn't want to be sobbing at work again over these characters. Which I would have.

Sooooo. You DEFINITELY need to read book 1 before grabbing this one. I'm going to try to not give too much away... There's a time gap between the end of book 1 and the start of this one. I love that Nell has continued to come out of her shell. Darius made me FURIOUS there towards the beginning. Then, things change. I loved the location - war torn country trying to rebuild and fighting starting again. And while there was no way Nina Lane could have known what was going on in the real world RIGHT NOW (yep, I'm talking Ukraine and Russia), I could easily see this happening for real. Then, we get to the end of the book and my heart was breaking. Remember I said for book 1 that it wasn't a true cliffhanger? Well, this one is. I finished this with tears streaming down my face thinking NOOOOO! I am so glad I already have the last book in the trilogy because I NEED to know what happens with Nell and Darius.

The words use and overall review shouldn’t reflect personally on the author or any other of her series and books.

3.5 stars

When I read the first book It felt I didn't really get to understand nor know the characters. In this book I feel I got to know them a bit better. A time lapse of 4 year had pass between the first book and this one and our h made a big character development. No longer under her protective father wing she grows into an independent woman. I think I grovel more over our H yes; I always have a weaker spot for broken male leads. But I also hated him for his "I will be the hero" and keep away attitude. We got introduce to new characters and said goodbye to others. The romance of course if there.

Overall, it was a good read.

Why this wasn't a higher read is I have a very specific age I like for my leads, and I did ask the author beforehand about the lead ages, but she never mention a time jump.

It turns out this series is more about war than romance or love. It has our couple separated at the beginning for several chapters which was tiresome after ALL the waiting in book 1. Then they finally get together and it's almost anti-climactic b/c we waited for so long. I know Nell has ben through a lot in her life but sometimes she seems much too mature to be 22. Like implausibly mature. I just wasn't in love with this book b/c I don't love Nell, she's not relatable and makes several stupid decisions that lead herself and others into danger, including Darius who pretty much sacrifices himself multiple times for her. If she would just do what he said things would have been much better for them. I'm not sure I'm going to read the last book. There's enough real war in the world, I read romances to escape and this series is bringing me down instead.

📎🅼🆈 🆁🅴🆅🅸🅴🆆📎

I'm so freaking shocked and never expected for NELL and Darius' forbidden love to turn into a much bigger picture involving battling war and being smacked into your face your most feared nightmare and battling it to save your loved one.

It's being four years now and Nell is in New York studying and trying her best to get a job which try as she might turns out to be so much more difficult.

Darius and Nell meet once again in New York and find the feelings still burning like an inferno inside them.
But Darius is still not ready to let himself come close to Nell.

Nell is frustrated with Darius' restraint and unwillingness to accept his feelings for her and when once again Darius does something that leaves a deep hurt in Nell and after facing back to back failure in finding jobs and in a desperate attempt to move on in her life, Nell grabs an opportunity working as a Volunteer for the rebuild program in Vazrov, a village in krasnovar.

I LOVED LOVED how beautifully the author has protrayed the small town staying afloat and trying to survive in the aftermath of a destruction and has us immersed in the small town that is struggling to rebuilt itself and how Nell comes along and befriends the people while simultaneously helping around and this job becomes so much for her when the town people become like family to her.

Problems arise when the nearby town is attacked and warnings are whispered that soon the war might spread to their small town.
Nell does her best helping around but without much Wi-Fi signal and limited communications she's not able to converse to her father properly and reassure him.

Out of the blue, her saviour comes to her rescue and slowly Darius and Nell together help around and start settling.
Feelings and desires quickly escalate in a situation where they are on their own and unable to hold their passion for each other we get the sizzling, fiery chemistry between Darius and Nell.

Ahhh... There's just so much going on in this one and I have to say I was so pleasantly shocked but utterly immersed and loved every second of not only Nell and Darius uninhibited together but to get to witness the beauty of togetherness and how even in difficult circumstances the people celebrate smallest things wanting happiness.

This book was unputdownable for me throughout but near the end it's like YOU SIMPLY WON'T BE ABLE TO STOP TURNING THE PAGES AT ALL.
I was shocked when I saw I was past 90% into the book and seriously didn't even realise it.

I'm so glad and thankful that Nina had mercy on us readers and is releasing the next book within a week of this one as I'm not sure I could wait at all after that scary and devastating ending.
I'm so so on the edge as to what the F is going to happen. AHH... Loved freaking loved this one. ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️

4.5 stars--FEATHER AND FLAME is the second instalment in Nina Lane’s contemporary, adult BIRDSONG age-gap, romance trilogy focusing on twenty-two year old Nell Fairchild , and forty-four year old, photojournalist Darius Hawke. FEATHER AND FLAME should not be read as a stand alone as it picks up immediately after the events of book one SPARROW AND HAWKE.

NOTE: FEATHER AND FLAME focuses on terrorism and war, and was written prior to the attacks and invasion of Ukraine. If you have not read book one there may be spoilers in my review.

Told from dual first person perspectives (Darius and Nell) FEATHER AND FLAME advances the series approximately four years, four years in which Darius and Nell went their separate ways. Having graduated from the New York Art Institute, Nell struggled to find a job but what our heroine never expected was to find the man that broke her heart. Darius Hawke has been on the front-lines of many war –torn countries, and our hero is about to leave again, for places unknown. Bitter and heart broken with no job prospects in sight, Nell volunteers to work with Global Rebuild, an organization that helps rebuild and repair cities and towns decimated by war. Working and living in the fictional Eastern European country of Krasnovar, Nell finds herself falling for a people and a country about to be pulled into another war. Enter Darius Hawke, the man Nell has loved most of her life, and a man who is about to sacrifice everything for the woman he loves. What ensues is the rebuilding friendship and romance between Darius and Nell, and the fall-out as war comes to Krasnovar, destroying everything in its wake.

Darius Hawke’s attraction to Nell pushed our hero out of her life but Darius never stopped thinking about the young girl now woman that had stolen his heart. With another war of the horizon, Darius places himself in the direct line of fire to save the woman with whom he has fallen in love but Darius is about to face the demons from his past, demons that continue to haunt his daily life. Nell Fairchild is a little naïve, stubborn and determined, and with it comes the inexperience of a young woman who believes she can make it on her own but the atrocities of war are non negotiable, and our heroine battles between head and heart, taking a stance against the man that she loves, placing herself and everyone else in danger.

The relationship between Darius and Nell has been building for several years, a relationship predicated upon family and friendships. Darius is good friends with Nell’s father, and late mother, and the guilt of an age-gap romance sends our hero in the other direction. Nell has only loved one man all of her life, and the man is about to change the course of the relationship, to save the woman he loves. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.

There is a large ensemble cast of colorful, energetic and interesting secondary and supporting characters, most of whom we meet in Varaz, Krasnovar.

FEATHER AND FLAME is a story of second chances and love, war and destruction, and a struggle to survive. The premise is heart breaking, edgy, dramatic and intense; the romance is seductive and emotional; the characters are broken, dynamic and lively. FEATHER AND FLAME ends on a cliff hanger-you have been warned.

Talk about powerful.
Talk about heartwrenching.
Talk about beautiful.
Feather & Flame is all of those things and so much more. What Nina Lane has created with this 2nd book in the Birdsong Trilogy is nothing short of outstanding. A book very different from Sparrow & Hawke in that she allows both Nell and Darius to spread their wings in vastly contrasting ways while at the same time pushing them along to find each other when the world around them is most definitely falling apart.

We're now 4 years later after that intense parting of the ways between Nell and Darius at the end of book 1 and I'm more engaged in their forbidden love story than ever before. Both make decisions that will ultimately affect not only their futures but their present in ways neither ever saw coming. Both characters have changed yet their deep-seated want of the other was never more potent. There is an enormous amount of push and pull and acts of defiance, particularly from Nell. But she is not the same girl Darius once knew and the way she takes charge of her life and expands on her desire to be more than just her father's daughter was a grand thing to watch. And with Darius more than aware of these changes in Nell, when that resistance finally breaks, nothing was ever more incredible. For both of them.

Darius and Nell go to hell and back many times in this installment and it felt very timely with what is happening in the world today, that Lane has our couple entrenched in an upheaval that had me on the edge of my seat throughout. But it's the love. That crazy, confusing, magical kind of love that drives this book. The exquisite surrender and all that occurs because of it. How Nell is the strong one, definite in her feelings for Darius, and how he can't help but come to grips with what is happening between them.

The details are endless as Lane uses her gifted brush to paint a picture with her words that is both haunting and ethereal. It's as gripping a book as one can imagine. I can only hope book 3 gives us the conclusion we all crave although I have a feeling that there is so much more to Nell and Darius's story that hasn't even scratched the surface. Just know that you won't be able to put this continuation down and you'll be utterly smitten with not only our couple but the new friends they make who quickly become family.

When looking for the kind of read that offers up a myriad of emotions that we all crave from our books, look no further than the Birdsong Trilogy. And with Feather & Flame, those emotions will undoubtedly bring you to your knees in the very best way while you get to experience more of Nell and Darius's well-written journey of self-exploration and forbidden desire.

5+++ huge stars!

Feather & Flame, book two in The Birdsong Trilogy, is everything I look for in this type of genre. I say this because it’s not just a forbidden romance; it’s so much more. Fast-paced, action-packed and thrilling, I couldn’t wait to find out how Lane’s protagonists’ story would pan out. But it’s far from over. If the cliffhanger in Sparrow & Hawke left me speechless, I was all wound up like a 10-day clock while reading this one. Thankfully, Lane isn’t going to make her readers wait too long for Wishes & Wings, the conclusion to Nell and Darius’ addictive saga.

Four years have passed since that fateful day. Nell has spread her wings and is even more determined to prove to herself that she can go it alone. My heart sang when I observed how capable she had become, how she’d fitted into her new surroundings with arms wide open. But her road hasn’t been an easy one, and get this—the worse is yet to come.

Nell just happens to be in the same country where Darius had been, although little can I say about what happened to him without leaving a spoiler. But of course, Lane’s storytelling wouldn’t be what it is if she hadn’t slipped in a twist or three when least expected. Here, she’s upped the angst to a nail-biting level; however, swoon-worthy moments melted my heart.

Darius is beside himself. The unstable political ambience where his best friend’s daughter is, means pulling out the big guns. Whether I’m speaking metaphorically or not is for you to discover. One thing is for sure, he and Nell are dynamite together. When the going gets tough, neither of them throw in the towel, and I’d be fibbing if I said the intensity of Darius fighting his inner battles didn’t affect me.

Lane has done it again! Her understanding of Eastern Europe’s weaknesses and strengths, a spot-on narrative and visual storytelling reached all my expectations. And what I loved was the way one of Nell’s new friends articulated the English language. I’d hate you to think that some conversational phrases seemed a tad imperfect because they’re not. Also, never have I read an author describe kisses between two characters as she has done. If I were in any doubt regarding Darius and Nell’s relationship, their kiss sealed it for me.

I could go on and on, but I won’t since my biggest wish is that you give this impassioned series a chance. Bravissimo, Lane!

I received a copy of this book from the publisher/author to review for Stephanie's Book Reports.

Darius:
"This is why I never contacted you. I still have no control around you. You want me to tell you I haven't thought of you? That would be a lie. Wherever I've been, whatever I've done, I haven't stopped thinking of you. You are always there."
Nell:
Once I was convinced that my feelings for Darius, my love for him, were pure and real. I fought against all his perceptions of wrongness.
But that was four years ago. If I still can't find pleasure in even the thought of kissing another man, maybe my feelings for Darius have gotten twisted and warped. Maybe they're obsessive.
Maybe they're wrong.

Feather and Flame is the second book in the Birdsong Trilogy. You need to read the first book, Sparrow and Hawke or you will be lost. This book will pick up four years from where we last were in Sparrow and Hawke. Nell is now older and wiser. But she is also completely in love with Darius. Darius on the other hand is still just as stubborn as he has ever been and he is still being tormented by his guilt. However things are about to get very interesting when Darius and Nell are stuck together in the same country. A county that hold very painful memoires for Darius and there is some serious danger looming too. However, this might just be what causes them to give in to their feelings. I have to say too that these two never have things go the easy way for him. It always seems like the are fighting something or fighting for something. This time it might just be them fighting for their life. This book will have you on the edge of your seat and I love every single second of reading it. Now I need Wishes Wings in my hands like right now so I can see how this series ends.

Nell & Darius forbidden love story is BACK! REALLY recommend you read Sparrow & Hawk so you understand their story a lot more and you understand why the time gab is perfect for their relationship

This book has ACTION AND SUSPENSE!! This was a lovely surpise and you feel everything with this book. Once again so many inspirational quotes and I will not spoil what the action is about. I will say this get ready for the heat and survive...no spoilers

"When we make love, Darius Hawke, we're both going into it totally aware of heat we're doing. Open. Willing. There will be no excuses, no reluctance. No shadows. With us there will only be bright, clear light."

This came from a beautiful & real moment between them. We learn more about his abduction and how his body & mind still copes with it...no spoilers. I felt his pain and I felt her love for him 💞

Darius & Nell are soul mates and nothing can keep them apart. I also love their passion for the art and the way Nell explains how they see the world through their artistic eye is beautiful. And art saved them to because it brought peace & shelter...no spoilers. Just like the previous book Sparrow & Hawk Nell set up their personalities perfectly and I am 100% invested in these two to be together 🎨 📸

This is book two in The Birdsong Trilogy and it continues Darius and Nell's story and you really need to read this story. This book starts four year's after book one. Omg this book takes you on a roller coaster ride of emotions and the twists and turns will have you hanging on your seat and holding you breath wondering what else they will have to go through but as usual Nina Lane throws in more curve balls and of course she keeps you guessing and what another explosive cliff hanger ending and I cried so much that I am glad that I read it in one sitting while alone and in to the early hours of the morning and I can't wait to read the final book to see what the outcome will be for Darius and Nell and will I be cheering or have my heart broken. Nina Lane is an amazing author and writer and her story's have so much depth to them that you find yourself totally addicted and she certainly knows how to keep her reader's attention and on the edge of their seats and I definitely recommend you read this book but make sure that you have the tissues ready because you are definitely going to need them. Remember that this is not a standalone book and you will need to read book one Sparrow and Hawke but you will definitely not be disappointed.

I Voluntarily Reviewed a Copy of This Book.

Darius masih berdiri dg tembok yg dia bangun.

Kedua kalinya pun, Nell mencoba move on dg mengambil volunteering ke luar negeri.

Nah, mulai bagian ini, cerita mereka berubah. Aku kurang suka di bagian ini. Memang sih, unsur terperangkap di daerah konflik ini cocok dg latar belakang Darius, cuman jadinya kayak mirip sinetron. Mana, Darius nya juga maju-mundur lagi. Huh!

3 bintang.

"I don't trust myself with you." "I trust you with me."

WOW! In the second book of the Birdsong Trilogy, Nina Lane delivered an emotional and captivating novel that had me on the edge of my seat the whole time. Darius and Nell's attraction is undeniable and while I understood why it took long in the first book for them to cross a line, it was nice to see their relationship grow and develop.

This wasn't your typical romance. There was so much angst, a lot of despair, and when you factor in that they are in a foreign country that is under attack, it adds another element to the story that is second to none. I don't know how to describe it but my heart ached reading the book. I could feel Darius' despair and pain, I could feel Nell's hurt and anger, but in the midst of it all, I could feel their love and that is what is most important.

I don't want to give anything away because there is still one more book left in the series but my god... this book was something else. I can't wait to see the conclusion to Darius and Nell's love story. This book is for those who believe that true love can conquer all.

Feather & Flame, the continuation of the Birdsong Trilogy takes us to four years after the last encounter of Nell and Darius. They see each other very unexpectedly. While neither of them speaks to the feelings they have for one another initially, you can feel the heat and intensity immediately!! While I couldn’t anticipate the direction Nina Lane would take us on this installment, it is incredibly written and evokes so much emotion and yes, some heartache as well. The manner in which she brings this forbidden age-gap romance to life is quite extraordinary. While the key focus is seeing the love Nell and Darius have for one another come to life. This story provides us with so much more. We are swept away too far away places; learn of different cultures, art, traditions not to mention the thrilling adventure with twists and turns that will have you on the edge of your seat. This trilogy is one of the most beautiful, heart-felt and well written stories I have read. 5+++ beautiful stars!
