Rate this book
There has been a string of disappearances in the Triumvir of Corundum. Someone is stealing royal children, and Thedra's childhood sweetheart Dette, the princess of a neighboring kingdom, is the latest to go missing.
When Thedra suspects the sorcerer she blames for her mother's death is behind Dette's disappearance, she refuses to let him harm anyone else. She sets out with the help of a dashing soldier and a secretive servant girl to find and rescue Dette before it's too late.
Thedra would do anything to stop the disappearances and save her friend--even cross a cursed forest that brings her nightmares to life. But one of her companions is hiding something, and the forest seems to want her dead. To defeat the sorcerer’s twisted magic, she must face her worst fears and risk losing what she wants the freedom to love who she chooses.

Beautiful and Grotesque Descriptions with Rich Worldbuilding

Disclaimer: I read an earlier version of this book but re-read it for this review.

An interesting Swan Lake Retelling with a lot of great queer and polyam representation. The Worldbuilding is extensive and important to the plot, with a lot of interesting gods and goddesses. The Poison Forest setting had a very cool horror vibe without getting fully into that genre.

Thedra is the princess of her kingdom and she was engaged to the love of her life, Princess Odette, but things have changed. Thedra is destined to step into the role her mother held, as the High Priestess of Death, and with that comes more changes than she could have imagined.

I enjoyed this book and it's take on darkness that can bring fears to life. I also loved a world where the LGBTQ+ were represented so well and in a powerful way.

My favourite quote: "You don't understand woman at all, do you? ... You think we all want power like you? We want room. The safety to be ourselves. And when the gods give some of us the power to take it, men like you still find a way to steal it"

I would like to thank Lauri Starling for providing me with a copy of your lovely book to read in exchange for my review. Thank you for trusting me with your story, I loved it.

Thank you to the author and Equality Book Tours for sending me a copy of the book to review.

I enjoyed this book so much. The world building was extensive and well developed. The magic system was my favorite part with the addition of the goddesses. There was intrigue and action till the end with the addition of new characters throughout the journey.

We got a diverse group of characters in this book. I enjoyed getting to know each of them and watching them interact with each other throughout the book. Thedra was the princess of the kingdom, who was destined to step into the role her mother held as the High Priestess of Death. When her mother passed away, she had to take up the role and its duties sooner than expected.

Agate was my favorite character of them all with his sarcastic responses and his character arc was exciting. The story got interesting whenever he came up. He was such a fun addition to the plot.

The ending irked me a little and the pace was slower than expected. The way the story progressed was exciting and made the book an interesting page turner.

The basic idea and plot of this one waa interesting but i would have preferred a little more excitement. I just found that it moved a bit slow. The characters were pretty good and they all had some interesting relationships and dynamics, i particularly liked Agate and his character arc throughout. I was glad to see plenty ogmf lgbtq rep as well. For me the biggest gap though was that some things were confusing and i thought couldve used more detail to clarify or the scene was too rushed for me to figure out what happened. I also wasnt a huge fan of the ending, she deserves better than the arrangenent they worked out.

AMAZING book in every respect! Thedra is hypercompetent and cunning but still vulnerable, the f/f romance is sweet and tender, the side characters are endearing, and the magic is SO COOL.
