Choices: Interviewing and Counselling Skills for Canadians

Intended for courses in basic counselling and/or interviewing offered in universities and colleges. These courses are typically found in Social Work, Human Services, Nursing, Criminology, and Education departments. This practice-oriented counselling textbook includes a wealth of pedagogical aids to help students understand and apply the different concepts that are introduced. It features a lucid, easy-to-follow writing style with complex ideas presented in an accessible manner. As the only Canadian text in the field, Choices holds a definite competitive advantage. Having recently written a US version of this book for Allyn & Bacon, Bob Shebib's main goal for this revision was to make the second edition more Canadian focused.

For a novice, this is single-handedly one of the most important books I’ve read on how to ensure client success.

Read the 8th edition of this. It's really interesting to see therapy through the therapist's POV!

Possibly the least-awful textbook I've had to read for school

An incredibly valuable resource for developing counselling skills! I learned so much and found the sample scenarios to be especially useful.

I found this book to be bland but helpful in the end. I would recommend reading it if in grad school in the psychology field, push through

Great source of basic counselling skills but holy typos Batman! Overall I enjoyed it but I was put off by the occasion missing letter or wrong word (form instead of from). Now considering a side career as a textbook proofreader. ;)
