The Ancient Persians

Rate this book
The ancient Persians created a society in which art and architecture flourished alongside religion and law. Though the mighty Persian Empire fell after a little more than two centuries, its influence remained strong for years to come.

Clear writing, simple language (though not dumbed down). Lots of information.

...really, what else can I write about this book?

Lots of good information presented in a very straightforward manner. Not overly exciting, but interesting. Especially helpful in understanding Old Testament accounts of captivity, kings and invaders.

Archaeologist James Barter published The Ancient Persians in 2006. Barter is an anthropologist specializing in the Classical World (Barter 112). The book is part of the Lost Civilizations series. The book is written for young readers, but the book is helpful for any reader who wants to read an introduction to the Ancient Persians. The book has seven chapters, not including an introduction and epilogue. The book has a chapter on “Persia before the Empire” (Barter 12-23). The book has chapters on the political history of Ancient Persia, Ancient Persian administration, life at the court of Ancient Persia, one chapter on “everyday life in the Persia Empire” (Barter 63-74), and the military in Ancient Persia. The book is 99 pages long. Barter’s book on Ancient Persia ends in 330 B.C.E. with the death of Darius III, the last member of the Achaemenid dynasty (Barter 95-96). The book has large and very readable text. The book has black and white pictures. The book includes sections entitled “for further reading” (Barter 102-103) and a section entitled “Works Consulted” (Barter 104-105). The book includes a section of notes, picture credit, and an index. Each chapter has several side pages in each chapter. The book includes maps of Ancient Persia. I thought Barter’s book on The Ancient Persians was an excellent introduction to Ancient Persia.
