Can the Omega Rangers survive to deliver critical intel about the Empyreals to Zordon and the Power Rangers?
A NEW OMEGA RANGER RISES!
Betrayed by Drakkon and trapped on a bizarre alien world, Jason, Trini, and Zack – the Omega Rangers – realize they must make the ultimate sacrifice to get the critical information they’ve uncovered about the Empyreals to Zordon and the Power Rangers.
Just as all hope seems lost, the Omega Rangers will be saved as a new member rises to join their ranks! Now with their team four members strong and having witnessed the birth of the last Empyreal, the Omega Rangers must make the long journey back to Earth to deliver the critical intelligence they’ve obtained. But can they get Zordon to trust them in time to save the universe?
Superstar writer Ryan Parrott (Mighty Morphin Power Rangers/Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles) and fan favorite artist Francesco Mortarino (Firefly: Bad Company) debut the newest Omega Ranger in this latest chapter of the UNLIMITED POWER era.
I’ll leave the same review for both volume 4’s of Mighty Morphin and of Power Rangers since they are to be read in tandem, an issue of each at a time. And for the record, I read all of these issues in one sitting because I couldn’t put them down.
I’ve got friends that I’m reading this with, so I won’t mention any story aspects to avoid spoilers in case they read this. Though I am SUPER excited to talk about these, so read these damn books this week, JEFF! That being said, I’ll just share how I feel about these volumes overall. I feel like there were a couple of things in these stories that if they didn’t get addressed, these would have been an easy 4. But having read them entirely and having consumed all of the Eltarian War story that Ryan Parrott gave us, this was a ridiculously easy 5 star book for me. I found myself questioning some things Parrott was doing or where the story was going and then BOOM, he tells you to shut up and enjoy the ride because he actually had a plan for whatever you were thinking all along. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I’ve got blind trust in Ryan Parrott with this franchise. This man is a genius and it’s time that I’ve admitted, as ridiculous as this statement is, that his Power Rangers run has been one of the most entertaining, if not best, comic book runs that I’ve ever read.
This review basically covers both Mighty Morphin' Volume 4 and Power Rangers Volume 4, since the Eltarian War storyline threads through the pair of them to the point that you really need to read both of them to get the full picture.
This feels like what Ryan Parrott has been building to for a while now, and it shows. He brings the plot threads from both books back together, making sure that both the Eltarians and the Empyreals have their time to shine as villains, while also remembering that there are two teams of Power Rangers AND Lord Zedd and his goons to deal with as well.
There's a lot to love here, and it's Power Rangers at its best. While it's not the massive scope of Shattered Grid, it definitely has season finale potential, and it's exciting to watch unfold. Parrott's character work with Zordon, Zartus, and Zedd is a joy, and he's even managed to make Matt as the Green Ranger work surprisingly well. And when the dust settles, both books feel like their mission statements have changed, rather than just going back to what they were before, so the event banner is definitely justified.
On art are the usual suspects - Marco Renna on Mighty Morphin', with an assist from Go Go Power Rangers originator Dan Mora, while Francesco Mortarino handles duties on Power Rangers. Even with inking and colourist assistants, these books never falter in the art department.
The Eltarian War is the kind of big crossover event that you want it to be. There's twists, turns, payoffs, and action galore, plus excellent character work and lovely art. What else could you want?
Back from a recent mission, the Omega rangers finally receive Tommy's distress call. The Command Center is destroyed. I like how this series has brought elements from the tv shows into the story, but the elements surrounding those events are often new and with the divergence from the expected tv show storyline, you never know what will happen next.
Zordan fights! The Master Arch! There are a lot of beautiful fighting panels in this book, especially with pairings of characters I didn't expect. Many a great quip between characters who may have never met on the original show. Matt and Tommy working together!
This was an excellent conclusion to the arc. This and Mighty Morphin Vol. 4 really pring an epic culmination to both ongoing series. I'm excited to see what's next with the upcoming creative team switch-up. I give this book a 5/5.
Fantastic from start to finish. The fights are climatic and grandiose. Skull finally gets some closure although it is bittersweet. Zordon has a touching moment as well. This was the culmination of all the build up and story building. The art and colors popped and only heightened the experience.
This is the fourth volume of the Power Rangers comic that follows the Omega Rangers throughout space. This one follows the Rangers as they head back to earth to fight the Eldar and their allies in order to save the world. This is a really great collection and I'm curious to see what the new arc and new writer will bring to the project.
