“We have more power over the waves than we’re willing to admit. We can make this world better. But only if we are better.”
Resonant: The Complete Series throws us into a gritty, post-apocalyptic world with vivid illustrations of its feral, chaotic characters. A decade after the first waves hit, humanity struggles to regain hope amid wastelands, cult-like leaders, and, of course, the tortuous Waves— that find any stray thought in your subconscious, and make you act upon them. Your only warning? A chirping of cicadas that gradually becomes louder the closer an upcoming wave is about to hit.
Paxton, a single father of three, is forced to leave his children back at their farm and find help restocking the medicine for his youngest, chronically ill son. Instructed to stay inside and look after one another while he’s gone, the kids do as they’re told. Not everything goes as planned though… for Paxton’s or the children’s sake. Paxton and his kids find themselves in dangerous situations— ones they could have never imagined, while still being separated. And now, they must do whatever it takes to survive and reunite with one another before it’s too late.
First off, I love how Resonant emphasizes the importance of family. Paxton is a steadfast, protective, and badass father. You can tell throughout these pages that he really does love and care for his family. Paxton’s three children are awesome too. I admire their fierce independence— living by themselves while also having to deal with the waves. It’s not easy. And while the family is a core part of this story, I would like to address that the word “family” itself, can take on different meanings. It can’t just simply be described as “a group of people.” Because it’s so much more than that. Resonant understands this, and it shows. Families don’t always stay together. Families are by choice or force. Families can be temporary. Families might have some so-called leaders… but who are these leaders really being led by? Resonant tricks us too, because not everything is all dark and bleak. In these dystopian times, even a small bit of hope lingers. Unlikely friendships will sprout, and betrayal will catch our characters by surprise. Sting them even. Which brings us, the reader, to ponder: how far can someone’s deepest and darkest desires go? And what is a wave, this bizarre psychological phenomenon, in the first place? Finally, what would you likely do? Suppress, control, or let loose these dark impulses? Resonant has so many questions to be asked, but few answers to be found.
Resonant’s art also attracts attention. Every scene is filled with color, detail, and style. It all comes to life beautifully, and accurately to the way of the Resonant world: full of blood, emotions, fights, and insanity. I gotta give big props to the action scenes. They made reading Resonant a great time! So great, this book felt like binge-watching your favorite show. That’s why I'm not at all surprised that Resonant will, in fact, be getting its own show. I’ll definitely be looking forward to it!
Besides the show, I would love to see a prequel or some other continuation of Resonant. It’s crazy how this omnibus had so much yet so little. Every chapter in Resonant already had just the right amount of progression. It was hard to put down, I finished the book yearning for more, and etc. And while the world-building was fantastically well-thought of, it was a lot less complex than I would have expected. Again, Resonant does not quite answer all of our curiosities in what these waves really are and how they came to be. However, these are just a few nitpicks and I enjoyed this book overall.
All in all, I highly recommend Resonant. Insanely well-done with very real messages, as well as reflections of our humanity. This is nothing like your typical apocalyptic story.
“The world is empty and full of nothing……” It’s been ten years since the world fell apart. The survivors are scattered and live in fear of the next wave. Then, the cicada’s sing, chirp…chirp… and you’re no longer in control of yourself. You do things, terrible things you never dreamed you’d do.
This the the world Paxton and his kids live in now. And he has to leave his children alone, venture out into unknown danger, and hopefully find the medicine his youngest boy needs to live. They listen to his instructions and promise to do as he’s told them. But….. the next wave comes, the cicada’s sing….. things go awry.
Can I say, wow! What a powerful story of a family and the power of their love for each other. Each one had to face adversity and life threatening situations. Each one stood tall.
And the illustrations were fabulous. Bold and so colorful. Scenes leapt out at me and pulled me in at the same time. I lingered on each scene, making sure to see all. Sometimes the entire page was an illustration. No words. But I got the meaning.
Apocalyptic/dystopian stories are among my favorites. And this series has joined my top ten list. A fan of the genre? Of graphic novels? Grab a copy. ‘SEE’ for yourself.
I received a complimentary copy. My review is voluntarily given.
I really like this series. This is actually my 2nd time going through it. There's no real setup. It's about a family in a post apocalyptic world. There are these waves of madness that come through and turn everyone incredibly violent while they are happening. Shortly before they happen the cicadas go crazy giving people time to quickly prepare to keep from hurting others. A father has to go off and find medicine for his sick son leaving his older brother and sister in charge even though they are still kids as well. And the sister is on crutches, missing a leg. So the story takes place in two locations, one about the father trying to get back to his children. The other, the kids trying to survive alone in this cabin in the woods. My only complaint is that it's not longer. There are so many stories left to tell in this world.
I am so excited to be hosting a spot with @jaimerockstarbooktours and @vaultcomics on this Resonant complete series, and my tour stops here.
👧🏻 review: I couldn’t resist and read this after the mail came in. This dystopian world is a mess with so many actions. The apocalypse that took years and years to find answers is so satisfying. This horror comics shows the what-ifs that could possibly happen to our society if we don’t strive to make this world better. The illustrations are dark and gory but the graphics are good and clear. If you love to look at images/graphics with few words, this is definitely an entertaining comics to read.
If I could sum this book up in one word it would be WOW! This dystopian graphic novel pops off the page in the most remarkable way, from the illustrations to the gripping storyline. As a parent, Paxton’s meticulous attention to detail to prepare his children for survival is absolutely poignant and beautiful. Kudos to the DB Andry for showcasing differently shows and medically complex heroes that can equally show up to the playing field in an apocalypse. An absolutely brilliantly horrifying read!
My ratings of books on Goodreads are solely a crude ranking of their utility to me, and not an evaluation of literary merit, entertainment value, social importance, humor, insightfulness, scientific accuracy, creative vigor, suspensefulness of plot, depth of characters, vitality of theme, excitement of climax, satisfaction of ending, or any other combination of dimensions of value which we are expected to boil down through some fabulous alchemy into a single digit.
the only character I cared about was the pitbull Fern. I cried when I thought that she got left behind. I have a pitbull and whenever it said whine, I could hear my baby whining.
majot walking dead vibes, especially governor, terminus, and the whisperers influences
Resonant: The Complete Series by David DB Andry is a post-apocalyptic horror graphic novel about fighting dark urges. It has been a decade since the first Wave hit. The Wave causes humans to succumb to their darkest impulses and they can’t control themselves.
Paxton is a single father of three kids. He worries about leaving them alone in their secluded home in the forest but knows he needs to get medicine for his youngest son. When the routine trip takes a turn for the worse, Paxton and his children are separated and will have to find a way back to each other. The graphic novel was a quick read. It was a bit predictable and felt like other post-apocalyptic graphic novels, but it was worth the read. I liked the dark and moody drawing style that kept me interested in seeing what happened to Paxton and his family. I enjoyed that the book discussed the different types of families and things we would do to protect them. I would have loved to learn more about these Waves and how they started! The book has a lot of action and world-building but doesn’t go into too much detail about how it all came about nor what happens to Paxton and his family in the end after his realization about the Wave. I would be open to reading more books by the author.
First of all, I absolutely love everything DB Andry writes and this series is no exception. I had previously read volume one of this, not that I got to sit and read through everything, it was such an adventure. The world building is well handled and the character growth seen throughout is spot on. There is one character choice that I wish did not happen, yet I get it - the temptations of the new world exist and everyone would do what it takes to find their own happiness.
The artwork throughout is phenomenal and even though there is an artist change between volumes, you do not notice any differences. The lettering by Deron Bennett is fantastic and Jason Wordie’s colors bring Ale and Skylar’s lines to life and infuse so much emotion into the world.
I love this story. I love fern. And I love the incredible world that this team built.
