They should know elementary linear algebra and matrix theory and they should be comfortable with mathematical proofs (how to read them, invent them, and write them).

Some people may dislike this book, simply because of its style. People with basic knowledge, (definitions of group, ring, field, and hands-on some example and simple proofs) and want to go further, I believe this the book u need to go through page-by-page. It's not a easy book, but consider its volume (< 500 pages), the knowledge it covers, and the modern treatment on the subjects, the pain is worthwhile!
