Professors are being murdered in a way that suggests a sexual motive in a novel that occupies in imaginative space an area homologous to the area occupied by Columbia University in actual space.

Turtle Point Press’ first murder mystery is a novel in the form of letters written by Wynn O’Leary to his brother Joel, a bop trumpet player who died of a heroin overdose. O’Leary i

Ugh. That is what I thought twenty pages in, 300 pages in-- 450 pages is my eyeballs were rolling deep into the back of my head, and I repeated a guttural "Ugh" upon finishing the last page. "Now", you ask, "why on earth would you bother reading something s so violently hated?" To which my answer is, "it kept seeming like it was going to get better." It never did.

I am a huge fan of what this novel promised, basically a ton of literary references (which it did deliver) and the inner workings of

Sometimes a girl just needs a half.

This book isn't really a full 4, but I suppose it's not a lowly 3. At many times, it was really quite interesting. It's the kind of book that makes me wish I had an extensive background in English lit, both so that I can catch the rest of the author's allusions and to be a little smarty pants. I am really disappointed in the novels that I have been trying to read lately. I am not thrilled by novels about disenchanted, slovenly, middle-aged white men who can't get their lives together. The story of a fictitious English Department plagued by a colleagues death hardly makes a blip in the novel. Rather, the book becomes an extended letter to the narrator's dead brother. The other characters ...more

The actual story was good. The story itself made me want to keep reading. But all of the stuff in between made it take me 4 years to read it. I love jazz and I love literature. I do not want a 5 page dissertation on each in the middle of a story every 20 pages or so. It's just too much. I ended up skipping almost a whole chapter towards the end just to find out what happens.

Annoying but I still keep reading it somehow. The females are not real. Why is he attracted to his *cousin*?
