As one of the new Masters of Avalon, Saul Danvers takes his responsibilities seriously. With two Masters absent from the club, he knows it's not the best time to take a few days' vacation, but he needs to clear his head. When the opportunity to borrow a cabin becomes available, he's all over it, packed and ready to head two hours away to where the fall leaves are dropping and the nights are drawing in colder. Halloween is on its on way.
Too young to feel so damned old, Caera Huxby stands on a precipice of life and death. She can't sleep for the monsters in her head, she barely eats, and functioning like a normal human being is foreign to her. She can only see one way out of the mess, and the decision is final once it's made. Desperation is a powerful motive. When an offer from someone she considers a friend comes from out of the blue, Caera takes it as a last chance to find some peace.
Little does she know that when the Masters of Avalon set their minds to something...
Oh my goodness, my heart was breaking with Caera and her story. How could someone go through so much and still continue on in life, not sleeping, not eating, giving up. It was devastating to witness and be privy to her plight. Saul is thrown into an devastating and surreal circumstance and he goes above and beyond to help this young woman who passes out at the sight of him. These Dom's of Avalon are outstanding characters, a family of misfits, who always protect those they love, and accept anyone worthy into their tight group. Kay, I love these stories, even when they are heartbreaking.
I Love These Avalon Stories - This One is Superb!!
Caera is a patient of Connie’s - she had an impossible childhood - actually can’t remember prior to age eight. She needs a reset so Connie sends her up to Atticus’ cabin.
Saul is distracted, and cannot complete his blog or find a direction for his life. Thane recommends a get-away to the cabin. (We see it coming but this is even better than you can imagine).
This is intense, emotional, gritty, raw and fabulous. I don’t know how this particular author seems to inject the reader under the skin of the characters, but we are right there every step of the way.
There are twists and turns and moments of hilarity to accompany the challenges that these characters face. Just know that once the family at Avalon adopts you, you are a member for life, and they will always have your back.
*** I am voluntarily leaving my honest review of this book ***
This is the 5th book in Club Avalon and OMG!!!! Kay Elle Parker has done it again. Caera and Saul's story will gut punch you and break your heart. Be sure to have tissues or a crying towel handy. My heart broke as her story was revealed. Sometimes you have to be broken all the way down to be built back up and that is exactly what Saul tries to do. And that twist in the story? Never saw that one coming but I totally understood why she had the demons she did! From the first time these two met at the cabin, I was rooting for them! It was good to see the gang as they also worried and tried to help where they could. This book gave me a book hangover..........it was that good. If you are a fan of Ms. Parker, DO NOT MISS THIS BOOK!!!
This was hard to get through! With slow, cruelly meticulous steps Ms Parker narrates a life unraveling. A trauma so devastating that healing seems impossible. But once again the Avalon family shows that they are at their very best when the unmentionable substance has hit the fan and is so wide spread it'll take a village to do the clean-up. And clean up they do! Every one of them brings his or her talents and personal experience to the fore. And of course their chosen lifestyle is a sizzling, unifying part of the process. BUT, this isn't over yet ...
I loved every book in this phenomenal series. This is Saul's story. Caera Is battling her on monsters can Saul help bring her to the light? Will she allow anybody in? This book was so good!
This is the fifth in the series about the denizens of an exclusive kink club in Arizona (since it takes place during Halloween perhaps the publishing date got pushed back?). While the MC meet for the first time here, other characters and plot points from previous books appear throughout so I don't think it's a standalone. Trigger warnings for child abuse -- and contrary to what the author promises readers in her disclaimer, these allusions aren't kept to a "minimum" at all.
I've read all the books and while I'm not a huge fan, I've liked some of them enough to invest, but I think with this one I've hit my wall. All the aspects that have bothered me in previous books -- the repetition, the melodrama, the torture porn -- are amped up to the nth degree here. Unlike other main characters, Saul and Caera have absolutely no subjectivity separate from her childhood traumas, and this made reading the book an unremitting slog (I can't tell you anything about Saul other than he has the patience of a saint for no apparent reason that I can see). In addition, several plot points strain credulity (a well-respected psychiatrist sends a woman as fragile and frightened as Caera into forced proximity with a man she doesn't know, and Caera's mother's explanation for, well, anything made absolutely no sense) and every single page contained some version of "I'm worthless"/"You're not worthless" -- in spades. I skipped whole sections of this book and didn't miss anything.
2 stars. The prose was well-edited; I liked the self-reflexive section on the joys of reading; and everything was consensual. But this book was so boring (contrary to what authors believe, emotional wallowing, self-pity, and descriptions of abuse aren't really that interesting); the dialogue so repetitious; and the characters so one-dimensional, I could barely finish it. If you think you might like it, I suggest you read the many glowing reviews it's gotten. Liam's story and, I assume, a continuation of one unresolved line of action, is up next. "Blew out a breath" tracker: 11.
Poor Caera, she doesn't dare fall into the restfull arms of sleep. She is at the point where she is living like a walking corpse. She can't sleep, drowns herself in coffee to try and stay awake and hardly eats. She lives a life of desperation, trying to survive her nighmares that are never ending. Her therapist, Constance has an offer that might help, some time in a secluded cabin. As it turns out the same cabin was also offered by another person, to Saul Danvers one of the newest Dominants at Club Avalon. Once Saul meets Caera and sees the state she's in, he takes on the job of helping her. Saul is the most patient and caring man, even though he does treat Caera with his no nonsense dominance he realizes she needs more help than he might be able to provide. As Saul watches over Caera as she sleeps and gets her to eat, he also finds himself caring for her more than he felt he would. Caera finally has someone that cares for her and she has more to live for as her nighmares are soothed by Saul who does his best to stop the trauma that wakes her each time she falls asleep. As the couple work with getting Caera to eat and sleep, they each form a deep love and respect for the other. Caera learns it's safe to trust in Saul and he never fails her. There are many hanky needed times, feelings bubble to the surface as past traumas are revealed but know that Saul and Caera will work together as Saul uses his training as a dominant and his natural empathy to help Caera fight her way back from her dark, disturbing past as each memory is revealed. This is one of the most emotional stories I've read involving the club Avalon members, although there are others, Caera's could have ended in her death if Connie and Saul didn't get involved. I am looking forward to the next Club Avalon book 6 and Liam is next I believe!
Another wonderful story from Kay Elle Parker. If I ever have the desire to check out a BDSM club, Avalon would be it. I've loved all the characters that Kay has written about in this series. You just can't help but feel their stories.
I didn't know much about Saul but came to love him fairly soon in the story. He may be a Dominant, but he's a caring, loving person with so much patience it absolutely floored me. Like all the men are in Kay's Avalon stories, they stand apart from so many Dominants I've read about.
Caera is so very young and fragile. She's gone through so much in her young life that it's easy to see how she's gotten to the point of just giving up. But leave it in the hands of our lovely Constance and Saul to help to bring Caera to fight for her life to be normal. Try as they might, it's harder than anyone realizes. But Saul is much more than just any man. He has more patience and understanding than I gave him credit for in the beginning.
All the stories in the Club Avalon series are interconnected. Wonderfully so, I might add. I love to be surprised when I read a book and this one definitely surprised me with its turn of events. If you've read any of the other stories about Avalon, this is another that you really don't want to miss. Kay Elle Parker has become one of my favorite authors with this series.
Well, Merry Christmas to me .. a Kay Elle Parker book, #5 in a ridiculously fantastic series, to read over the Christmas holidays! This story is about Caera, an almost broken beyond repair young lady, and Saul, a forty-ish dom, that can knock on my door anytime. They are thrown together to slay Caera's demons as the demons rip sleep and sometimes logic. from Caera's poor ravaged body, mind, and soul, 24/7/365.
Holy moly is this an emotionally charged read! I kept my kleenex nearby, a bottle of water at hand, and a chocolate bar in the freezer waiting for my blood sugar drop from not eating, because I would rather read a K.L.Parker book than eat.
This book #5 can be read as a stand-alone, but why .. there are 4 fabulous books before this that are excellent. I have never read a series as hot, as heartbreaking, as vivid as The Club Avalon books. I don't know what Ms. Parker is going to do next, but I know I'll be first in line to read it! ♡
I've been waiting for Caera's story since we first met her back in Connie's story. I knew it was going to be intense and would make me mad, sad, and glad all at the same time. I was right.
Poor Caera, the only person who has ever actually really tried to help her is Connie, and at this point, even Connie may not be enough. She's right on the edge of death, and if she keeps on avoiding sleep, sucking back caffeine, and not eating, it won't be long until she gets to that point. Even worse, Caera actually welcomes it happening. She's just done. Done with the night terrors, the feeling wrong, the brokenness, all of it. Connie, though, sends her to a cabin so that Caera can have some peace and try to feel better.
Only, that's not exactly what happens. I like Connie, a lot, but I kinda want to kick her butt a little in this one. Not because she's mean, but she's meddlesome. Meddling could backfire, and to be honest, I thought that it might have a couple of times.
So many secrets. I can't wait for the next book to see what happens next.
Caera broke my heart into. I have never been in her situation but I’m not surprised by her actions at all. Saul needs to clear his mind and get back I to the swing of things. These two really are explosive and he has the patience of a true Dom. The storyline is so so good. Don’t miss this read. Awesome writing.
I really loved this book it is set in a BDSM Club named Avalon and it part of a series of interconnected Stories each featuring a different set of main characters with other characters as secondary characters . There is a lot of 🔥 and I really enjoyed these scenes as well as the rest of the story. I think you too if you like BDSM
The fifth book in the series, but you can read it as a standalone, but you will get more enjoyment out of the book if you have read the previous books. There are two new characters Saul and Ceara.
It is a story filled with emotion from heartbreak and sadness to hope and joy and it will also make you smile. This is what Avalon is. A place without judgment with people who form their own family and take care of each other. Whether it is asked for or not.
This book was everything! It kept me on the edge of my seat. About half way thru I started getting an inkling.. a suspicion about something... not sure what was making me think that.. but I started devouring the book.. I couldn't flip the pages fast enough. I couldn't read it quick enough.. I had to know if what I thought was true. It about broke my heart when I realized that my suspicion turned about to be true. All I could imagine was the devastating impact it was going to have on everybody. And on one of our beloved Dom's in particular.
I was not let down in the least! Normally I hate it when I can predict what is going to happen in a book... but this time... it just seemed right. It fit like a missing piece of the puzzle. I didn't mind it at all. I was happy and horrified at the same time. I knew the memories that Caera was starting to remember were only going to get worse. It broke my heart. I hope that she never fully remembers them. The things she is already remembering is heartbreaking enough. I cried so many tears with this story. As is starting to be the usual with a Kay Elle Parker book. She just rips my heart out and tears it to pieces before putting it all back together again.
Every book I read in this series... I think I have found my favorite Dom of them all... And this one... I can't imagine a Dom that will ever top Saul. He is just so gentle and patient with everything that Caera is going thru. He is so determined to see her thru this. Not to let her give up and give in. It was utterly amazing to read. I love how much he fights to drag her back from the ledge where she finds herself teetering on that cliff ready to just give in and fall over it to put herself out of the misery that she is living.
I loved how fragile Caera was... but still so strong.. afraid to hope that Saul would be different.. but praying that he would be the strong person that she needed him to be for her to help her thru this. The one that would see her finally and not turn away from her because she was "crazy" or her problems were just to much to deal with.
I absolutely loved this story. I hope that many people will take a chance on this story and love it as much as I did. I am so looking forward to Loki's story next. The next book in the series. But at the same time I'm kind of dreading it.. the more we get each of these stories the closer we get to the end of it and I am so going to miss all of these characters. They have all become dear to my heart and I don't want this series to end.
The preview of this book grabbed me and I thought this would be an excellent read. the H/Dom Saul was yummy, sensitive, caring, thoughtful everything you could want in a Master. The Author doesn't give us any background on him. Caera is a broken 21 yr old who has no memory before she was 8. She is skeletal, barely eating, drinks coffee by the gallons so she won't sleep, suffering through night terrors and sees no reason to go on living, she is holding on by a thread. She eventually begins to get her memories back extremely slowly, with Saul helping her every step of the way. The main reason I almost DNF this book is because at least 90%, it seems to me, goes back and forth between them of "I'm worthless and defective, useless not fit to live and Him repeatedly telling her that she is.. There are many triggers through most of the story. It is hideous what she went through and she ends up remembering it. They do have their HEA and the writing was very good, I don't remember any misspelling. So, parts were very enjoyable other parts just drug on and on. I haven't read the others in the series and I'm not sure I will, though I did like all of his friends and their subs. Sherrie
This book was absolutely incredible. This is an author that I know I can count on to create complex characters, rich, gritty, consuming stories, scorching heat and fierce tsunamis of the good, the bad and the ugly of emotions. That all holds true for Caera and Saul's book. This is a very intense and an extremely powerful tale that has sharp edges but a soft soul. It is often painful and poignant, but also uniquely beautiful and filled with hope. Caera is the type of character that is just going to wreck your heart and ruin you emotionally. Whether you simply feel for her or can relate on a personal level, you are going to be moved...deeply moved. As for Saul, he was exactly who Caera needed and I loved that (in his own way) he needed her right back. Together, they were purely electric and had me captivated. This is my volitional, objective review.
"Temptation, potential, and possibilities" This is a wonderful series. Each story is so detailed and the mountains that they face on their journey is spell binding. The problems are real, but the Avalon family has all the patience in the world to help and assist you through it. The problems don't disappear from one book to the next, but they are manageable, or at least better than they were when you first meet the characters. Loved all the descriptions, twig vs a tree, rubber ducky floating, the Jeopardy line, weakness vs survival, delightful, even the wonderful placed humor, e.g. "taking the asylum out for a night drive?"
The chapter with Jasper was spectacular, so emotional, shocking, but made me smile in acceptance.
I absolutely love this series and highly recommend it. I voluntarily reviewed this book.
Caera has been seeing Connie for nightmares and insomnia. Connie sends her to a remote cabin to re coop and in steps Saul. They have an instant connection and start to unpack Caera's past.
Kay creates great character growth with Caera and shows how she grows as a person throughout the story. There are vague description of child abuse in this story and it is a continuation in many ways of Jasper's story.
This continues the strong story arc that Kay had established four books ago with Braun and Bodie’s story and this book has taken the saga into a new direction which I happened to really enjoy. I loved the tender relationship between Saul and Caera. Definitely worth reading as it’s a good read.
This may be the best Club Avalon book yet! Just when I think Kay Elle Parker has written the ultimate book in the series, she ups her game. This book was amazing. I almost skipped Christmas as I just wanted to READ!
Really enjoying this series, I like all the different Dom characters and the ladies they find along the way to suit there needs. Would recommend this series and can't wait for the next one.
Ms. Parker knocked this one out of the park. I cried when Caera cried and I got mad when Saul got mad. It was an emotional roller coaster and I loved every minute of it.
Caera doesn't remember anything before age eight. She has suppressed the horrific things that happened to her. On the verge of suicide, Connie has her take a trip to a cabin to recharge. Little does she know, Thane has sent Saul to the same cabin. Saul needed to take a break and figure out what he wanted out of life. When he meets his little rabbit, everything changes.
I gave this three stars because I felt like this story came out of nowhere. Saul is barely mentioned in the previous four books and suddenly he has his own story. I assumed his character would we built up in Liam‘s and Loki‘s story but I was wrong. I would have liked to have known Saul better before he got his own story. I didn’t hate it, it just came out of left field.
It was ok, felt sorry for the heroine, all the shit, she been through, just heartbreaking. The story was very slow, at times, and the heroine fellings back and forth was exhausting. I have no idea, who the hero are, except he was patient, which was a shame. Just meh, for me.
I am going to try to be as objective in this review as possible, despite have some very visceral reactions while reading it.
The TLDR is that every character in this story horrifically let Caera down, including and especially the MMC and her psychologist/friend.
I’ll start with Connie first. While the story is obviously not going for reality in describing the mental health profession, the poor representation of a clinicians relationship with their client sets the story up for failure.
There are many boundaries crossed by Connie within the first chapter. Coercing Caera into a conversation and acting as a friend rather than her psychologist was the first error. Next, there is a lot of education and training required to be a licensed psychologist. With all this experience, she truly believed a Dom with no background on the FMC is a better fit to help her than a mental health professional?
Additionally, Connie hugely violated Caera’s trust. What she spoke to Connie about as a client is private health information. It is NEVER to be shared with anyone, especially your romantic partner and your friend. It is not anecdotal information that you can spread because you believe it would help her in the end. How is Caera supposed to believe anyone will respect her consent if her psychologist can’t?
Finally, my biggest issue with Connie is the position she has put the FMC in. She is suggesting this 21 year old client with no sexual experience (and has severe trauma with unknown triggers) engage in sexual activity with a stranger. All the while, she has no means of escape and is 20 miles from civilization. I’m what world is that a good plan to help Caera heal?
There’s a lot I could say about Connie’s character and choices, but I’ll leave it there. Moving onto Saul.
This MMC has no right to call himself a Dom. As soon as he found himself in the situation, he should have apologized to Caera and come up with a solution to remedy the situation. Engaging with this half-baked plan of Connie’s shows he has more interest in himself than Caera.
The way he’s attempting to “help” her is bound to establish an unhealthy relationship where Caera becomes dependent on him for everything. This is not a bad thing innately. However, going about it with the wrong motivation and without a informed consent is wrong.
He is planning on how she’ll be a good little submissive for him and slot in nicely with his life and social group. However, he does nothing to establish boundaries with her or explain what he and Connie do in these dynamics. Both Connie and Saul have put Caera into a situation of “submission or humiliation”, as she lovingly puts it. Where is the consent in all this?
The writing itself was done fairly well, and I can see where the author was going with the plot. However, the poor planning and execution of these relationships sets everyone up for failure.
There needed to be more research done on how to successfully navigate a situation like Caera is in, and how these dynamics could be incorporated into her life healthily. BDSM is not a replacement for proper mental health care.
I’m a lover of this series and couldn’t wait for the next book in the series, and what a book it is!! Saul is one of the Masters at the Club, and just oozes domination, but he needed a bit of a break. So when his friends suggested going to the cabin, he never in a million years expected to meet someone there. Caera went there to get away from the demons in her head and when these two met, it was completely unexpected!
Caera has a past she is unaware of in the sense that her mind can’t recall. As you read, you can feel her anxiety, her fears, her sense of helplessness. But with Saul, for some reason she feels at peace. But why? What is it about this handsome man that speaks to her very soul. My heart hurt for Caera so many times and I hoped and prayed that Saul could show her that she deserves friendship and love. He is the kindest, caring man and I totally fell in love with him.
As in usual fashion with this series, this owner takes you to levels you could never know about. She tells a story of sadness and horror, yet also tells a story of hope and love. Prepare yourself for a wild ride. This story literally blew me away!
Wow, what a heartwrenching powerful story! Caera is a lost soul fading away with no sleep and no food living on coffee when her therapist Connie offers/orders her to go and regroup at a cabin in the woods. Saul is overworked and his friend Thane offer him a chance to go unwind ar a cabin owned by one of their friends. Turns out he and Vaera will be at the same place at the same time. This sadist is ready toturn around until the naked woman faints when she sees him. Can this broken soul accept solace and everything this dom sends her way? This is the story of somebody who was tortured as a child and still living inthe nightmare that is her life inher mind. Reading this story will bring to your eyes and goose bump as the damatic story unfolds. Even through the horror described in the story, you will feel compeld to continue reading as you will become so immersed and enthralled by the storytelling, you will be able to put it down. I volunteered to review this amazing story.
