So....I've never DNF'd a cookbook before.

I live in a two person household and I'm constantly struggling to adjust recipes and meal-prepping guides bc most recipes are just too big for a small household like mine. I think when I was browsing cookbooks at the library today, I somehow misread the title as being a cooking-for-two cookbook. I didn't realize this was a fad diet shirtless gen-x man doing squats on the title page sort of book.

I know I really shit all over the book 'Anti-Diet' for being way too harsh on wellness culture and people who just like nutrition and want to be healthy, but 'Two Meals a Day' is exactly the kind of thing where I think me and the Anti-Diet lady would be on the same page.

I like cooking. I like food. I don't want to open a recipe book and get slammed with a bunch of fear-mongering about how IF YOU EVER SNACK EVER OR DON'T EAT AT EXACTLY THE RGHT TIMES YOU WILL GET DIABETES AND YOU WILL DIE!!!!

I'm a recovering anorexic. (Sort of. I didn't ever eat, but I had no desire to look better or be thin-it was a much weirder whole psychological thing, but yeah...).
I'm a healthy weight now. I love eating and cooking. I don't want this fear-mongering bullshit. Especially since in addition to once having disordered eating, I'm also a real hypochondriac. I can't get into all of this hyper-fixation on eating. Anxiety. The common thread between the disordered eating and the hyochondria is anxiety. I have it and this book sent me off into an anxiety-spiral in the first 10 pages.

No thanks. I didn't realize this was a fad-diet health book or I wouldn't have picked it up.

Thank you to Grand Central Publishing for providing a review copy of this book. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
So I may have accidentally fallen into the realm of intermittent fasting during the lockdown portion of the pandemic. Having your home and work spheres become concentric circles can do that to a mom. But either way, I’ve been looking into healthy recipes to add to my go-to bag of meals. When I saw Two Meals a Day Cookbook by Mark Sisson with Brad Kearns and Sarah Steffens, I jumped at the chance to check it out.

Intermittent Fasting
The Two Meals a Day Cookbook is a companion book to Two Meals A Day. I haven’t read that yet, but I plan to now that I’ve read the cookbook. I try to avoid diet trends as I’m more interested in plausible lifestyle options that I know I can adopt long term. What attracted me to this cookbook was not just the element of intermittent fasting that works with my life routines right now, but also the recipes that featured ingredients that are already a part of my daily life.

My Rules For New Cookbooks
First of all, you cannot walk into my household talking about you can only have one type of meat or no meat. That’s an immediate no. So as I flipped through the pages, I was happy to see meat-friendly recipes featuring both red meat and poultry.

Second, I don’t want to go broke trying to purchase a new pantry worth of rare ingredients that I wouldn’t normally use. Aside from a few odd ones here and there, most of the recipes feature ingredients that I would naturally have in my cupboard already.

Things I Loved
The author has some other Keto cookbooks so there are quite a few Keto and almost-Keto recipes mixed into the Two Meals A Day Cookbook. My husband and I have been skating around the notion of incorporating keto into our routines, so this is a good thing for me.

The pictures were beautiful, but I wish there were a few more. I’m always a fan of highly visual cookbooks because I need to know what the final product is supposed to look like. Love the section in the beginning that explains his philosophy and “Nine Tenets to Succeed.” It gave me the background I needed before reviewing the recipes. I ended up marking a lot the recipes to try! There were some familiar ones like beef stew and chicken soup that have a few tweaks to make them healthier that I want to try. I also appreciated the section for busy people, because mama doesn’t have time for a 20-step dish.

This is one heck of an amazing cookbook. And yes that is a real meal created from a recipe, plated to show how delicious looking it is but mark my words; it was melt in my mouth, tasty, delicious and satisfying. So much flavor and more healthy than I’m used to. I couldn’t believe something so good could be made at home by my caretaker and daughter. She whipped it up in a flash and we could not stop stop looking through at all of the other recipes we couldn’t wait to try.

We’ve gone through and flagged and bought ingredients for all the other meals we will be trying throughout the week. One bite and you will be sold to get this cookbook.

What a wonderful book! I was drawn into this cookbook by the author's story and how he changed his understanding of food, health, and diet to make a life-altering move in a new dietary direction.

The health and diet information is priceless, easy to assimilate, and also easy to put into everyday action.

The recipes are scrumptious. I've tried several and nothing yet has disappointed me. I can see how these simple yet tasty meals can change the way I purchase food and prepare meals for my family. The ingredients are mostly things I already had in my pantry. The recipes didn't require that I purchase items at a great cost that I would use only once and then sit on my shelf.

This cookbook is one that I will use weekly, as I intend to try every recipe over time. In the process, I'm hoping that I will not only benefit from great meals but also the health benefits that come from these recipes.

I thank the author/publisher for gifting me a copy of this wonderful book. My opinions are my own and my evaluation is sincere. @gcpbalance

A refreshing and practical cookbook for anyone looking for a simpler approach to everyday meal planning. The collection offers plenty of flavorful recipes that make a two-meals-a-day routine feel varied and satisfying rather than repetitive. I especially appreciate the emphasis on enjoyable, filling meals that can fit naturally into a busy lifestyle. The recipes are approachable, clearly presented, and provide plenty of inspiration for creating wholesome dishes without spending excessive time in the kitchen. With more than 100 recipes, there is a great range of options to explore, making it easier to discover new favorites and keep meals interesting. The overall approach feels straightforward and flexible, which makes the cookbook accessible to readers with different cooking styles and routines. Whether you are interested in simplifying your meal schedule or simply want fresh ideas for satisfying meals, this book is a useful resource. Practical, flavorful, and encouraging, it makes everyday cooking feel much more manageable. Highly recommended!

Two Meals a Day is the latest book by Mark Sisson. It's filled with recipes for breakfast, dinner, and even smoothies and treats! My husband and I have made a handful of recipes so far and all were easy and yummy. If you are sensitive to dairy though some of this book won't be your jam. Heavy cream is a common ingredient in many of the recipes. I recommend giving the Southwestern Scramble and the Cheese and Green Chile Chicken and Egg Casserole a try. We really liked them. Thank you so much to Grand Central Publishing for the gifted copy in exchange for an honest review.

A Keto based cookbook (which I didn't know when I checked it out at the library. Calorically very high even when splitting with others. Smoothies that have 500-600+ calories each? Waaaay too fatty and high. A lot of meat. A lot of cheese. I saved a few recipes to test, (mostly meatballs which can be frozen for smaller portion.) I read other reviews. People complained of the same things, plus they wanted more photographs of the food. What we got was a lot of pictures of the aged author which is something people do not want to see.

To be honest, I was turned off by the amount of meat used in this cookbook. As someone who is trying to reduce their meat consumption because of the environmental impacts, to have an author go in the complete opposite direction was terrible.

The two meals a day "diet" is a cheat--just announce that you're Keto already. But a lot of the recipes sound good.

As someone with NASH liver disease, this would kill me. Enough butter to drown in.
