Burning Bright is the sequel to the YA novel ‘Rising Star’ which was released in 2020 and followed the beginning of the music career of sixteen-year-old Dani Truehart.

In this sequel, Dani’s first album has not long since dropped and she is topping the charts and in demand, including from the hottest young and cute actors in Hollywood, Kayla and Trey.

But having all that fame at sixteen is hard, especially when you have family and boyfriend issues and you are dealing with the world near enough on your own.

Can Dani hold it together or is she about to make some bad choices that could change her life forever?

I enjoyed the first book, Rising Star, and so I was looking forward to seeing what the future had in store for Dani Truehart. I found her likeable in book one but it felt like fame had gone to her head a little in book two and she didn’t come across as pleasant, which hopefully will show just how much fame, fortune, and constantly being in the limelight can change a person.

The plot of this series is certainly different and I can see YA readers enjoying it. It is definitely the right storyline for the market, especially when a high percentage of teens would love to be famous. It shows them about the pop world, what constantly being in demand can do to a person, and that not everything is as glamorous as it first seems.

Burning Bright is a decent sequel and a must-read if you have read the first book – which you need to do to understand this one. It also ends on a cliff-hanger, meaning you ‘need’ to read the third book when it is released.

Thank you to Michele Kwasniewski for sending me a review copy in exchange for an honest review!

4/5 stars

Every time I read one of these Dani Truehart books I'm blown away by how much fun they are! I always forget how much I love them, but Michele Kwasniewski's writing style is so addictive and her pacing is impeccable! It was nearly impossible to put Burning Bright down, so I read this entire book in two sittings across a single day. Whenever I thought I should probably put down the book and return to the world, a skillfully written cliffhanger would pull me back in and I would remain enthralled for the next few hours.

While Burning Bright was funny and often lighthearted, it also brought up deeper themes about the struggles of stars thrust into the spotlight while still young and impressionable. This story definitely made me smile, but it also made me pause and think about the psychological aspects of fame.

I am so grateful for the chance to read this captivating novel, and I absolutely cannot wait for the third (and final?) book to come out.

I was sent a copy of this book for review.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~.
With the phenomenal success of her debut EP, Dani Truehart is a superstar at 16. She quickly records her first album with preparations for a world tour reaching fever pitch. Dani is excited to explore her new career but she worries about leaving her friends and family behind. The tour kicks off to a popular start and her new fame attracts the attention of two of TV's hottest actors. Enthralled by their celebrity life, Dani is eager to stay in touch but her Team don't think they are a good influence.
The pressures of the tour, constant appearances and school work all while being hounded by the paparazzi take its toll on Dani, her mental health suffers and she makes increasing bad decisions. Adding in her mother's endless attempts to exploit Dani to make money, leaves Dani filled with anxiety and pain. Dani acts out by behaving like a Diva and treating her staff with disrespect and callousness.
As her fame grows, she neglects her family and friends. When they do visit they are appalled by her altered behaviour and her shocking attitude. In an attempt to escape the pressures of stardom and family drama, Dani takes refuge in alcohol leading to bad decisions, harmful actions and consequences that could end her career.
🌟🌟🌟🌟 This story is more emotional than the first as Dani is confronted with an adult world demanding things 24/7 all while dealing with the realities of fame and the everyday life of a teenager. Her mother traumatises and betrays Dani once again which coupled with other pressures results in Dani's spiralling mental health which is foreseeable and heart-breaking. Her behaviour and attitude take a nose dive in this book and I spent many chapters not liking her but I feel her story is compelling, honest and intriguing to read. I felt broaching the topics of mental health and alcohol abuse as a coping mechanism were very important parts of this story and I am interested to see where book 3 takes both of these topics considering the ending. Overall, a great story that keeps you hooked.
My stop today on the @rrbooktours #rrbooktours blogtour for the #YA release of #burningbright - Book two in the rise and fall of Dani Truehart Series, by @author.michelekwas
When we last met Dani Truehart, in the pages of “Rising Star”, Dani was 15 years old and a singing-dancing pop star sensation - on the cusp of stardom and inches away from the realization of all her hard work and dreams.
(The new book, “Burning Bright”, works as a stand-alone novel, but it is so interesting to see Dani evolve as her world unfolds throughout the series.)
Dani is now sixteen - her first EP a huge success, and a full-length LP and a global road tour planned to closely follow. As we follow Dani’s meteoric rise to fame and all its trappings, her life initially resembles the stuff fairy tales are made of. It soon becomes clear, however, that Dani’s road to success (literally!) has a dark side - stardom threatening to come at a cost Dani, and those that love her, are totally unprepared for.
Under the grueling scheduling of the road tour and the all-encompassing publicity machine surrounding it, Dani’s days take on an unrelenting structure and rhythm, punctuated with constant pressure to rehearse and perform in city after city; spending long, lonely weeks holed up in her travel bus as they follow the road; separated from friends and family, and all those who truly love her - Dani’s career and destiny now in the hands of her legal guardian, Martin, and her management and production team.
As musically, she can do no wrong, Dani’s fan base expands exponentially, bringing with it a whole new set of experiences Dani must sort her way through.
“I know all these people are here because they love me but their hysterical screams have me questioning if they want to hug me or rip me apart. “
“Their love has nothing to do with who you really are. It is who they think you are - who you let them see.”
The adulation of fans, social media frenzy and lure of fame, money and the power that comes with it, are heady and intoxicating, impossible not to be forever changed by, particularly for a displaced and alienated sixteen year old girl, now forced to face ugly truths about her parents, friends and others whose trust and affection she had never been forced to question.
“It couldn’t have been an act this whole time just to get close to me. Could it?”
The author writes with authenticity and compassion, creating a detailed world that feels like a behind-the scenes look at actual touring teen idol. It’s hard not to feel for Dani - and her sometimes questionable, maddening choices. As the reader can attest, being a teenager is hard enough, without having to make your mistakes, mess up and grow up, surrounded by a full-blown media circus, intent on capturing and documenting your every move, - the entire world your witness.
An oh, what a cliffhanger ending! Without giving the plot away (no spoilers here), I guarantee the out-of-nowhere ending will leave you scanning the shelves for the next release in this series!
A great big thank you to the author and the publisher for a copy of this ARC. All thoughts presented are my own.
OH MY GOD GIVE ME BOOK 3 NOW!!!
Sorry, was that a bit demanding!?? I guess so, but the way this book finished, jeez, I HAVE to know what happens next!!!!
This book is so actioned packed, and unfortunately, it is the start of the fall for Dani. She is now a typical bratty teenager, and that makes me sad. She begins to flip out at people for no reason, and she is keeping way too many secrets. It is horrible to witness her spiralling out of control. She can’t see the change we can, and it makes me nervous for her.
Because that is what I am. The secrets, blackmailing, awful, awful, mother, it is just too much. Dani can’t control herself. I was begging her to act differently and get out of her head, but she didn’t. I am literally screaming at her to stop.
I am still completely obsessed with this series. Already, I feel the two books in this series are going to be my favourites and most definitely a contender for the book of the year.
In the last week, I have lived and breathed Dani, and now I actually feel lost without her. She may be a diva at the minute, but she is a kid, not that excuses anything, but she is Dani.
Her mother, seriously, could she get any worse! God still despise that woman so much! She doesn’t deserve the name mum, that is for sure.
This book has bought out every emotion possible. I have felt anger. I have cried, smiled, laughed, and worried. This book has affected way more than I ever thought or hoped it would.
I will pay the top money to get book 3 now. I have to know what happens!!!!!!!!! Talk about a cliffhanger.
Despite everything I still love Dani, she has captured my heart and what a journey we have been on.
In Book 1 we learn Dani hasn’t had a normal childhood, her Mum’s constantly pushing her to train and rehearse, and is extremely controlling and manipulative. We leave her on the cusp of her dream singing career coming to fruition.
As the story opens we see Dani’s career is going from strength to strength and she is “living the dream.” Her first EP is a massive success, she’s recording an album and has an upcoming global tour. She is a hot commodity and living a life of luxury with the world at her fingertips.
Kwasniewski skilfully propels us into the music world and the realities of the business. Dani, just turned 16, has a gruelling schedule rehearsing, doing appearances and performing, while trying to squeeze in studying and time with her friends and family. She loses her grip on reality and can’t relate to the lives of those closest to her, and an ever growing distance is created between them.
The fame, fortune and adoration of fans is an addictive feeling and it’s a toxic world to be a part of without the right safety net around you keeping you grounded. It’s such a fast paced momentum and Dani gets swept up in it all and loses herself and what’s important to her. She changes as a person and her behaviour escalates in how she treats others and how she copes with the pressure, as a result she is secretly battling severe personal struggles. There’s an interesting mix of characters and I enjoyed their interactions with Dani and getting to see how these relationships changed over time.
At the same time, it’s difficult for Dani to know who to trust in this surreal reality where everyone has their own vested interest in her success. Who truly cares about her? Her life is no longer her own – she has so many commitments and barely any time to herself to take a breath. It really gives you an insight into this world and is thought provoking as we never normally see inside the bubble!
We realise the dream life comes with a heavy cost and the pressure is extreme. It’s an emotional rollercoaster of extraordinary highs and lows. She’s under a microscope and any mistakes she makes are captured by the press and out in the world forever. She’s betrayed by those closest to her, has blackmailers to contend with, a traitor closing in on her, and an ever growing list of secrets weighing heavily on her. Everything feels overwhelming and is spiralling out of control!
The writing is so immersive you feel a part of it and Kwasniewski weaves compassion and understanding through the pages. The veil is pierced and it’s hard to watch Dani making these bad choices, but you really feel for her as she’s growing up in the spotlight and trying to navigate this crazy world. For anyone who wanted to be a pop star, it makes you feel as though you’re living it, but be careful what you wish for!
That ending!! We are left on a cliffhanger which will definitely have me picking up the next book to see how this dazzling, engaging and riveting journey ends.
With thanks to @RandomTTours and @michelekwas for a place on the tour and the opportunity to read and review this book
I enjoyed this book. Sometimes YA novels can get iterating over time, and the characters can feel flat and one-dimensional. I thought Michele wrote well-rounded characters that I could get behind, or hate, depending on what they were doing. At times, I felt her main character Dani got in her way, created more drama than needed, and became self-involved. Overall, I felt that Michele captured that idea of what a 16/17-year-old girl rising to fame would be like.
I felt that Michele did a great job in her writing, keeping the story tight and well pace. There were no sections that felt like they dragged on or were cut too short.
I am excited to see what book three has for us in this series. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a good YA series to start, looking for a quick, well-paced read, and interested in the entertainment lifestyle.
** I was gifted this book for an honest review from R&R Book Tours.**
Author Michele Kwasniewski does it again in “Burning Bright,” the second book in The Rise and Fall of Dani Truehart Series. Picking up where book one, “Rising Star,” leaves off, readers continue to follow Dani Truehart as we witness the changes her rise to fame is having on her. As she juggles this new world and leaves high school and other kids her age behind, readers will wonder whether stardom is truly all it is cracked up to be.
Dani Truehart is a sixteen-year-old, newly minted popstar. After years of rehearsals and training, she has inked her first record deal, recorded her EP and, as “Burning Bright” kicks off, is embarking on her first world tour. Dani’s life has changed essentially overnight. She’s being mobbed by fans and paparazzi, selling out thousand seat stadiums, and traveling for the first time in her life. Social media and the sharing of famous people’s lives has nothing on what Kwasniewski is able to show readers through her words and the life of Dani Truehart. From the guilt of letting down your friends, to the stress of no privacy or free time, to the barrage of cameras and fans in your face, readers feel like they are along for the ride with Dani as you can’t help but feel for her and understand her glimpses of lashing out.
To say I flew through this read would be an understatement. I was actively sneaking away from responsibilities to get in just a few more pages, which goes to show just how amazing and engrossing this read is. Like many, I am not immune to the constant tabloid fodder and attention-grabbing headlines screaming in your face in checkout lines, as well as social media touting celebrity mishaps and relationships. I’ve always wondered how the rich and famous live, what their lives are like with people constantly demanding their attention, their autograph, or their picture. I’ve always wondered what a day in the life is actually like, including how they truly feel about their stardom and the curses and blessings that may come with it.
Well… imagine no further as author Michele Kwasniewski uses her professional career experience to create a realistic feeling, and all-encompassing character in Dani Truehart. Taking readers through all the highlights, including the rise, the fame, and the fans, Kwasniewski does a phenomenal job giving readers a seemingly firsthand account of showbiz life. Accounting for the structure of life on the road, living in closed quarters, the daunting fans, the hours, curtain calls, the making of friends, and the constant publicity, “Burning Bright” captures the fame and glory, whereas book one, “Rising Star” portrayed the work it took to get to the peak.
However, this series is called the rise AND FALL, and if the cliff hanger is anything to go off, the next book promises to be quite the ride. Readers will fall headfirst into Dani’s life throughout this book, feeling like both a best friend and a roadie. Kwasniewski has crafted such a relatable character, it’s easy to forget Dani Truehart is fictional.
This is book number two in the Dani Truehart series. I finished the first book and was very excited when the author offered to send the second book to read and review also. Both books end on a cliffhanger so I was excited to see what Dani has been up to since the last book. To say I was not disappointed is an understatement. Although this is not my typica genre, I can honestly say that I really enjoy these books and definitely had a hard time putting it down to go do life things.
Dani Truehart is a teenage singing sensation. At the end of the last book, Dani is 15 and has just finished recording her first album and is off to do a crazy world concert tour. There will be interviews, publicity photos, and of course, concerts for her amazing fans The Truehart Nation. This book picks up with her leaving for said tour and all of her hard work and sacrifice is about to be worth it, or is it?
In this book, Dani is now 16, far from a typical teenager, she is starting to see just how there can be a dark side to stardom. Her schedule is so packed she's lost almost all contact with her friends, family and her boyfriend, Sean. Shes having a hard time staying grounded and at times loses her cool in way that is really unprofessional. Despite having those around her who have been in her shoes before and are there to help her, Dani starts to act out and it could cost her everything, literally.
Dani is thrown into a world I feel she is unprepared for in a lot of ways. I know her manager Martin does his best but there were so many times I was screaming at him to do something more. Throughout the series we see just how awful and toxic Danis mother is. Dani even questions herself saying "she's my mother. I just cant stop talking to my mother, can I?" I was thinking, yes you can. She is a toxic, selfish, hateful person and just because she's your mother doesn't mean she has to a part of your life.
The author has created a very real world here with real characters that are likeable and relatable. With all the attention to detail you will literally feel as if you are a part of the backstage, behind the scenes life of a teenage singing sensation. I cannot even begin to imagine what it would be like to be in Danis shoes. The pressure to perform perfectly, the pressure from friends for not being there for them, from family to provide money now that you are making tons, from fans to be exactly who they think you should be and from yourself to not let everyone down. Its no wonder that Dani starts down a path that I am very much hoping is not very long. This is a fantastic series, a huge thank you to the author for sending me both books and I am very much looking forward to the next book!
4.5 Musical stars
I was so glad to be contacted again to review this book because I found the first instalment on the series amazing.
And I might be biased but I loved this one as well.
When I was a teenager, I dreamt of being a Rock star (like so many kids do) Years later I get to live that dream vicariously through books (Because I can't sing to save my life) This story allows you to do just that, it's so realistic, the fame, the spotlight, the adoration, the glamour but also the sacrifices, the hard work, the tiring hours, the juggling of your true self and the persona that everyone knows, the excess..
It's all there.. and you'll travel that world along with Dany... who has to deal with not only her work related problems but also with her relationship with a mother that can hardly be called that..
I felt bad for her and yet I didn't, you'll see how fame has tainted her... Understandably so.. because when you are loved by everyone and you feel like the world is at your fingertips... you can't do no wrong.. it's pervasive.. She made me so mad, and yet I could understand her.. She's just a kid.
The whole supportive cast (Martin, Dani's true friends, Sean) was perfect to me.. they had to put up with a lot of crap from Dani this time around and they still managed to support her and try to keep her from destroying her true self...
There was a huge cliffhanger at the end of this book that will drive you bonkers.. it did to me but now I'll have to patiently stalk the author until the next book comes out..
Burning Bright was even better than Rising Star, which is also a 5 star read! The end of Burning Bright leaves you NEEDING to find out what happens next! I can hardly wait for book 3 to appear on the bookstore shelves.
Dani hits Europe on a bus tour and tears it up...with her die-hard fan club, the "TruHart Nation", supporting her all the way.
She really starts feeling her stardom in this book and the lavish lifestyle that comes with being the hottest new star. Read as Dani gets into and out of trouble all through this book.
This book is hard to put down because you want to keep reading this story to see what is going to happen next. It's a fun book and I enjoyed taking this ride through Europe with Dani and her entourage. The characters are well portrayed and the storyline is well written and just plain fun to read.
And, again, the ending leaves you absolutely breathless and wanting book # 3.
Dani Truehart has released an EP and her promising career as a pop star has begun. She becomes more popular and records more, while having plans to go on a world tour. Dani starts to see that fame isn't all its cracked up to be. She struggles to keep her relationship with her long term boyfriend whilst judging new friendships with a hot young couple from her favourite TV series.
And as her fame and fortune grow events from someone she trusts could unravel everything Dani has worked so hard for.
Even though this is a sequel it could be read standalone if needed. I already liked Dani and Martin from book 1 and this one we get to see a more confident Dani who is a star and doesn't doubt herself as much.
I enjoyed this one and if interested you can find my last post where I reviewed the first book.
I will say this one does end on a cliffhanger but don't let that put you off as this is a satisfying series especially for music fans.
My Thoughts:
In this story Dani’s album has reached the top and now she has to prepare for her world tour but is she ready to leave her love ones at 16 and if so at what cost to her ? As she starts living the life she starts to see all the good and bad that comes with this fast paced life and it starts changing her. I found myself yelling at the people that were suppose to keep a eye out on her and keep her safe.
I enjoyed the way the author made me feel like I was a part of this world. It was fun going on the ride with Dani. The book left with a cliffhanger so I am hoping to soon read book 3 of this series
Burning Bright is the second book in this series however @author.michelekwas was kind enough to send me Rising Star the first book which I recommend reading first if you can although each book can be read as a standalone read. I am waiting to see how Dani ends up.
I've really enjoyed this book! Can't wait for the next one! Ends on a cliffhanger and I want to find out what happens!
This follows the story of 16 year old singer Dani Truehart. She has ups and downs in her career and in her personal and work life and we are taken along with her and her crew, family and friends.
She has to juggle her music career with her schooling while on a world tour and also her relationship with boyfriend Sean which also needs a little help along the way! Also her mother Jodi, trying to cause trouble and isn't the supportive mother you'd expect, just using Dani to make a quick buck!
I liked the characters and storyline and loving the author's writing style! A real page turner and would recommend you to read!
Having met Dani in book one, I was looking forward to seeing how her story would continue. She's on the verge of real stardom - but she also has people she loves and cares about back at home that she'd have to leave behind. Life isn't always all glitz and glam when you're a pop star, and Dani is learning this the hard way as she travels around. The people in her life range from those you can't help but like to those you can't help but hate. I really enjoyed diving further into her life. I cannot wait to see what book three has in store!
The story of Dani continues in the second installment of a three part series. Sixteen year old Dani has achieved her goal of professional singer. The story follows the life of a teenager trying to balance her fame while being true to herself and keeping her lifelong friends. All the little plot scenarios made it hard to put down and the ending left me wanting more!!! Looking forward to the next installment to see where Dani’s life takes her.
At a push Burning Bright could be read as a standalone novel but, in my opinion, its without a doubt best read after its predecessor, book one in The Dani Truehart series, Rising Star, if you are to get the best out of what is after all the continuing journey of latest teen sensation, Dani Truehart as she sings and dances her way around the globe, learning {and not always the easy way} about herself, her family and friends, love and life along the way.
First met as a fifteen year old on the brink of stardom, in this, the second novel, we get to once again follow the {ever so slightly} older but {not necessarily} wiser sixteen year old Dani whose life is something of a dream come true ... but at what cost?
A life many teenagers dream of, yes, there's the glamour; the clothes, the make-up, the getting to see the world, the heady adulation of fans ... the list goes on but, as Dani comes to learn all too well, there's also the gruelling schedules, the endless hour after hour spent perfecting songs and dance routines, there's the endless travelling, there's the separation from those who truly love and care for you, there's the whole media circus intent on prying into every aspect of your life
Far from portraying what to many teens is the magical life of a singing sensation, the author does an amazing job portraying the realistic 'warts and all' world of a teenager who, her childhood controlled by what I can only describe as her fame hungry, narcissistic mother, is signed over to a manager/production team, their goal, to make an international star of her. Dani {a character obviously close to the author's heart and one she obviously enjoyed penning} is hugely readable but then as a whole Burning Bright is full of well rounded, memorable characters that I could not do other than invest in.
Looking forward to the next instalment {and not just because of that cliff-hanger ending though, if I'm being totally honest, that in itself would have me scanning online for the next book in the series}, I'm longing to know what life has in store for Dani {and co} next.
I love this book! I’m totally invested in Dani’s story. The second book was even better than the first and I can’t wait for the third.
