With a forbidden power, Asho is going to save the very empire that enslaved him.
A war fueled by a demonic heresy is about to engulf the Ascendant Empire. Agerastian raiders, armed with black fire and an ancient hatred, seek to sever the ancient portals that unite the realm.
And in so doing, destroy it.
Asho—a squire still scarred by the shackles of his past—sees his new liege and her meager forces banished to an infamous ruin. Beset by tragedy, betrayal, demons, and an approaching army, the fate of the exiles hangs by the slenderest of threads.
Unbeknownst to them, their salvation lies not in their steel and resolve, but in the scarred soul of a former slave--a brutal secret that could reverse their fortunes and reveal the truth behind the war that wracks the Empire.
Thanks for visiting my page! I'm Phil Tucker, a Brazilian/Brit who currently resides in Asheville, NC, where I resist the siren call of the forests and mountains to sit inside and hammer away on my laptop.
After reading the Chronicles of the Black Gate, I felt compelled to write a review. It was absolutely spectacular. It’s on the shelf now with my favorites by Brandon Sanderson, George R.R. Martin and Robert Jordan. The world-building was extremely well-developed and the characters likable and multi-dimensional. The action sequences never got old or tired and I was hooked to the end. What’s unique though is that the characters I liked best kept changing throughout the story. This may be the first book I’ve ever read where I wasn’t annoyed by the different points of view. I’m truly sorry I finished reading the book and I can’t wait for Phil Tucker’s next masterpiece to be published!
That was a good old school fantasy read with some original ideas and interesting plot. On top of that all a full of action last book to finish it in a great manner.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Firstly, WOW! This book (a collection of the first 4 books by Phil Tucker), is a totally epic read. This is not a commitment to be taken lightly with over 3,000 pages.
Despite how daunting the size of the book may initially appear; this is an utter joy to read. I love how as the book progresses, we spend a chapter, sometimes two, with each main character so there is always a clear timeline of how the story is developing so there is no confusion at all. This was so cleverly written by Phil, with the timeline flowing so smoothly.
If you are a lover of LOTR, GOT or the similar, you will adore this book!
I was captivated from the first book and couldn’t pu it down until I completed the rest of the 3000 plus pages of the chronicle. What a tremendously creative imagination Phil Tucker has. Extremely well written and kept me absolutely engaged. I have definitely become a Phil Tucker fan. I have read many of his books and will continue to until I’ve exhausted all that he has written. Keep it up Phil. Thank you for the fantastic entertainment!!
I found it a little difficult at first to continue reading, but somehow it grabbed me just enough to keep on. I'm so glad I persisted. The story is amazingly imaginative, and the character development very impressive. Well done, Phil. I will read more of your books.
The book got five stars because the plotlines grabbed you, the characters were mostly finely drawn, and the story had a happy ending. Probably my only complaint is that everything worked out so well, reality is rarely so forgiving! A good read, I went through the whole series( book) in about a week , worth it.
A hidden jewel. I really recommend Phil Tucker's work. This is the second series of his that I've read and I really love his character development, how people change, grow, make bad decisions, try to make amends, and sometimes pay the price for their mistakes.
If you don't have him on your TBR pile, do yourself a favor and ADD HIM NOW!
I just picked this up as a quick need something to read and wasn't expecting much from it. But it was a good read. A very enjoyable journey. A series of four books I highly recommended.
Mainly from power creep. There seems to always be a thing that is stronger so they have to get a new cool power to take him on. But I did really like the premise and the story.
A great ride. Definitely worth the time to read. Phil Tucker is a very talented rider. I loved how he kept telling the story from the perspective of several different protagonists. A masterpiece. Congratulations, Phil.
I am one the 4th book of this set of 5 books! I am thoroughly enjoying this series I finished all of the books and I am amazed at how well this series was written! It would make a fantastic series of movies or an animated serial for TV.
I read this 6 book series because I enjoyed the author's Euphoria Online series. At first I really enjoyed the series but around book 4 it just became less enjoyable to me. The author spent an inordinate amount of time on poetry contests, all of which were ultimately meaningless. In the final climatic book character's motivations were unclear and the ending was "blah" at best. I notice there is a revised version of book 6 out now. Maybe the author made it better, but I'm not going to re-read it for the hope of new content.
Book 1: 4/5 Book 2: 3.5/5 Book 3: 4/5 Book 4: 4/5 Book 5: 4.5/5
End to a saga i started reading last year. Some portions of the books are brilliant, the fights - such amazing visualization, the despair, the struggle of keeping humanity alive.
Book 2 was a bit slow for me. The rest have been a great read.
