There's a Rock Concert in My Bedroom

Rate this book
A rip-roarin', rock 'n' roll picture book by international music star Kevin Jonas and his wife, Danielle Jonas, about the joy of music, the power of family, and facing your fears.

Emma loves music.

She loves the boom boom boom of a good bass beat.

She loves the stomp stomp stomp her feet make when she dances.

She loves to rock out with her mom, her dad, and her little sister.

And she loves to twang, strum, and thrum on her guitar.

So when the sign-up sheet for the school talent show is posted, she adds her name right away! But the more Emma hears about the amazing talents her classmates will bring, the more nervous she gets. What if her guitar playing is more of a plink, plonk, squeak ?

She's suffering from a bad case of stage fright, and it's up to her family to show her that performing can be fun too, and that she's already a star.

Paul Kevin Jonas Jr. (born November 5, 1987) is an American musician and actor. He rose to fame as the lead guitarist of the pop rock band Jonas Brothers alongside his younger brothers Joe and Nick. Jonas became a prominent figure on the Disney Channel alongside his brothers in the late 2000s, gaining a large following through the network: he appeared in the widely successful musical television film, Camp Rock (2008) and its sequel, Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam (2010) as well as two other series, Jonas Brothers: Living the Dream (2008–2010) and Jonas (2009–2010).

After the group confirmed a hiatus in 2012, Kevin appeared on his own E! reality series that same year, Married to Jonas, with his wife, Danielle. Following the band's initial break-up in 2013, Jonas appeared on the seventh season of The Celebrity Apprentice in 2014, founded the construction company Jonas Werner, and became the co-CEO of The Blu Market, an influencer marketing company. In 2019, he rejoined the Jonas Brothers following their reunion. The group would go on to release their fifth studio album. The reunited Jonas Brothers appeared in two Amazon Prime Video documentaries named Jonas Brothers: Chasing Happiness and Happiness Continues in 2019 and 2020, respectively.

Kevin, eldest member of the Jonas Brothers trio who rose to stardom on the pop music scene in the 2000s decade, is the band's least visible member, yet contributed more to their success than people realize. In There's a Rock Concert in My Bedroom, he and wife Danielle also prove their aptitude as children's authors. Emma loves music, so she jumps at the chance to learn guitar from her dad. Emma puts in the practice time to play well, and when the school talent show is announced, she signs up. Will her vision for the performance come to fruition?

As the big day approaches, doubts creep in. Emma's friends plan on exhibiting unusual, exciting talents, but guitar feels...humdrum. Will she bore the audience? Her little sister Bella offers Emma a good luck charm to ward off insecurity, but at dress rehearsal Emma is hit by a case of nerves. Is showing her talent worth the stress? By practicing under performance conditions, and feeling the support of her family, Emma can triumph as a stage musician.

This book honestly frames what it is to be a performer. It's easy to become so familiar with your own talent that you perceive it as boring and fear others will feel the same way. Overcoming that requires reasoned faith that your skills are impressive. After surmounting that obstacle, it can come as a surprise how different performing is from practice. Your body reacts to the pressure in new ways, and the only remedy is to perform for spectators often. It gradually neutralizes the stage fright. There's a Rock Concert in My Bedroom is an optimistic, realistic book, and I rate it two and a half stars. As a performing artist myself, if you want to improve, listen to Kevin Jonas.

This book teaches kids to overcome their fears and not run from competition just because they don't think they can win. But it's also about the joy of music, the power of family, and being brave enough to possibly fail/lose.

Emma plays guitar and loves music, so when her name when a flyer for a talent show goes up!
But when she sees the competition, she gets scared and wonders if her talent is good enough. Now she has stage fright! Emma must get over her stage fright and learn that competition can be fun!

THERE'S A ROCK CONCERT IN MY BEDROOM is a sweet picture book about family and nerves. Emma loves music and family dance parties. When the talent show is coming up, she decides to play the guitar. However, when she hears what the other students are doing, she worries that the guitar isn't good enough. Her family reassures her, and her sister gives her a lucky charm. When the dress rehearsal comes and she can't find her lucky charm, Emma feels a lot of anxiety and wants to quit. Her family has a dance party to remind her of why she is entering and tells her to imagine she is in a family dance party at the show. When the show comes, Emma rocks out imagining the family dance concert.

What I loved: This was an overall sweet story about anxiety and family. Emma is experiencing nerves around the idea of performing and feeling good enough compared to classmates. While children may not be participating in a talent show, they will recognize the feelings. The way that Emma's family helps her shows some ways to cope with such feelings as well as introducing the normalcy of anxiety. The colorful illustrations capture Emma, her love of music, and fondness for dancing well.

The text is clear on each page with strategic color changes to help with readability. The amount of text on each page will work for a wide range of ages, though the story itself will work best for elementary school aged readers.

Final verdict: THERE'S A ROCK CONCERT IN MY BEDROOM is a colorful and engaging story about dealing with nerves and the support of family.

Please note that I received an ARC. All opinions are my own.

I bought "There's A Rock Concert In My Bedroom" purely out of nepotism, because it was cowritten by Kevin and Danielle Jonas (illustrated by Courtney Dawson). Obviously, I was going to buy it; obviously. But it was really good!!!

It's about the joy of music, the power of family, and facing your fears. It's inclusive as fuck without being outright about it. It's colorful and bright. It's supportive and wonderful.

Nepotism aside, I would tooooootally recommend this book to anyone with kiddos, anyone who works with kiddos, or anyone who likes to read picture books.

This book is written by family duo Kevin Jonas and his wife Danielle. Kevin Jonas is known as 1/3 of the Jonas Brothers band. This book makes sense. It’s about teaching the daughter to play guitar, and the daughter getting upstage on the first time to perform for an audience. The daughter has jitters and is anxious that she won’t be as good as everybody else. The family creates a concert in her bedroom and reminds her that being on stage is just like the bedroom. This book is sweet. It’s fun and the illustrator did a great job with the bright visuals. I think the story sticks to what Kevin Jonas and his wife know and it feels like something they would tell their daughters. Is it great art probably not. Is it honest? Yes, I believe so. I think kids would like this story and I think the parents that grew up listening to the Jonas Brothers would like this story as well.

I was really impressed with the quality of this book, especially since it was written by celebrities. There's great opportunities for print and phonological awareness building, the text is simple, and the illustrations are clear and appealing. The storyline is well-developed and could even foster some good conversations around narrative structure.

I of course bought this because it's written by my favorite Jonas. I am a childless adult 🤣. I found it very cute. I expected it to be longer or have more musical wording but it was very simple which makes sense it's a children's story. Overall I enjoyed it.

This picturebook is originally written for children ages 4-8. I'm from Norway and I'm almost done with my teacher's degree, and I will be teaching young children English (amongst other things). This book is one I could easily use in my classroom.
The story of stagefright and a little anxiety is one thing (and I really like how they have managed to put words to a feeling many kids can't describe), but I also love how the theme is also about family, sisterhood, how to help each other and how you can overcome your fears with just a little help from the people you love and who loves you. The book is also beautifully illustrated by Courtney Dawson (who I've not heard of before, but will definitely be checking out).
And the family dance party, is that a reference to the 5-second-dance-party from "Jonas"?

Emma loves music, and performing and partying with her family. But when Emma signs up for the school's talent show, she gets the jitters and second thoughts about performing live on stage. Her family shows her the way to keep reaching for the stars.
