È il romanzo più scandaloso dell’autore di Zorba e dell’Odissea, che per questo libro nel 1953 venne scomunicato dalla Chiesa ortodossa greca. L’opera conobbe una fortuna mondiale postuma dopo la celebre versione cinematografica diretta da Martin Scorsese. In Italia venne tradotto dalla versione francese. Questa è la prima traduzione italiana dal greco.
Il romanzo racconta gli ultimi istanti di Cristo sulla croce, quando Gesù ripensa alla sua vita e immagina cosa sarebbe stato se lui, invece di immolarsi per il bene dell’umanità, avesse vissuto una vita da uomo, si fosse sposato con Maria Maddalena e avesse avuto una famiglia e dei figli.
Il film scatenò all’epoca indignazione e proteste, specialmente nel mondo cattolico e ortodosso: in Grecia scoppiarono tumulti, e alcuni cinema dove veniva proiettato il film vennero dati alle fiamme. Com’è ovvio, tutto questo giovò alla fortuna del romanzo, e anche se ora l’eco di quello scandalo si è sopita, il romanzo di Kazantzakis rimane un piccolo capolavoro.

This book was scandalous when it was published by Kazantzakis in 1955 and the reason that he - despite being a fervent Orthodox Christian - was refused an Orthodox burial. It was of course the source of the similarly scandalous movie of 1988 with Willem Dafoe as Jesus. Why the scandal? Well, like when Rushdie imagined in The Satanic Verses that perhaps Satan sat on Mohammed's shoulder and dictated parts of the Qu'ran, Kazantzakis looks at the human side of Christ (as depicted in the Gospel of Mark where his is more of a man than a man-god), he allows Jesus to have sexual fantasies about Mary Magdalene and he experiences the guilt of these fantasies and works through them. I found the plot quite plausible and challenging to my imagination and my belief system - but in a positive way. I read it after the Christians went ape-shit crazy in 1988 when the film came out and I can say that the book is far better than the film. I ended up breaking with my belief system - not because of the book but more because of what I perceived as the hypocrisy of a religion that calls Islam closed minded but that could not accept the slightest interrogation into the psyche of its founding figure. Perhaps you should read it and judge for yourselves.

يمكن اعتبار نيكوس كازانتزاكيس أحد أقل الكتاب حظًا في القرن العشرين، فقد ترشح في العام 1956 لنيل جائزة نوبل، ولكنه خسرها بفارق صوت واحد في التصويت لصالح ألبير كامو. وتعرضت بعض أعماله لعبث الرقابة -بل ومُنعَ نشرها- في العديد من دول العالم. إلا أن هذا الكتاب الذي نشره كازانتزاكيس في عام 1951 هو الأكثر إثارة للجدل من بين جميع كتبه (أو الأقل حظًا في معركته مع الرقابة)، إلى درجة أن البابا آنذاك عمد إلى إدراجه ضمن لائحة الكتب الممنوعة في الفاتيكان سنة 1954.

ويبدو أن سوء الحظ هذا تحول إلى لعنة لاحقت كل من قرّر الإهتمام بكتاب كازنتزاكيس، ففي فرنسا قامت مجموعة من المتعصبين الكاثوليكيين بإضرام النّار في دار للسينما عام 1988، احتجاجاً على عرضها الفيلم الذي أخرجه المخرج الأمريكي مارتن سكورسيزي والمستوحى من هذه الرواية!

غضب هؤلاء المتعصبون لأنهم سمعوا (ولن أقول قرأوا .. لأنني أشك أن أمثال هؤلاء يقرأون) أن كازانتزاكيس يتحدث في روايته عن المسيح كإنسان وليس كإله. وهذا ما يتعارض كلياً مع العقيدة المسيحية. وهو ما لا يستطيع أن يتحمله الأصوليون المتزمتون

أما السبب الآخر الذي أغضب هؤلاء المتزمتين كان تلميح كازنتزاكيس إلى إغواء متخيّل تعرّض له المسيح وهو معلق بالمسامير على الصليب يدفعه للتخلي عن رسالته. فعقدة الرواية تبدأ فعلاً في ال40 صفحة الأخيرة منها عندما يصرخ المسيح وهو يتفطّر ألمًا على الصليب: إلهي إلهي، لماذا تركتني؟! عبارة قد توحي بأن المسيح راح يشك في حقيقة دعوته في آخر لحظة ويتمنى لو أنه لم يفعل ما فعله ويصل إلى هذه النتيجة المأسوية

بالطبع فإن المتعصبين (مسيحيين كانوا أو مسلمين) لا يستطيعون القبول بمثل هذه التساؤلات المشينة التي تهدد اعتقادهم. ولذلك راحوا يلاحقون الكتاب بغية صلبه كما لاحق أسلافهم من اليهود المتعصبين -في الرواية- السيد المسيح!

إن السؤال الأخلاقي الذي طرحه كازنتزاكيس في الرواية في رأيي (والذي لم يكن له علاقة بالمسيح وحده بل بكل أصحاب القضايا والمناضلين أو سمهم مائشت) يتمحور في لحظة الإغواءالأخير تلك، عندما كان المسيح قاب قوسين أو أدنى من الندم والحسرة على حياته التي أضاعها مقابل ربٍ ومريدين وأتباع تخلوا عنه، ورسالة لم يعد متأكدًا من جدواها!

لست متأكدًا ما إذا كان المسيح (وأنا هنا أؤكد بأنني أتحدث عه كشخصية روائية حتى لا يهاجمني أحد المسيحيين المتعصبين ويقوم بحرق حسابي) قد اتخذ القرار الصحيح في النهاية، وما إذا كان قبوله لوضعه كان بسبب إيمانه -أخيرًا- بالرسالة التي ظنّ أنه يحملها، أم لأن الأمور كانت سيئة لدرجة أنها لا يمكن أن تسوء أكثر من ذلك (ما هو الأسوأ من الصلب والدماء تنزّ من كل مسامات جسدك أمام حشد حيواني يرشقك بالشتائم والسباب؟! أعتقد أن الموت في هذه الحالة أهون بكثير من البقاء في هذه الوضع المزري)

بالطبع لن يفهم المتعصبون هذا الكلام، ولن يدركوا بأن الصوة الإنسانية للمسيح في هذه الرواية تجعله أكثر عظمة من الصورة الأسطورية أو التبجيلية التي رسختها أجيال المؤمنين المتلاحقة على مرّ الصور. وهذا الأمر ينسحب على المسلمين كذلك فلا زلت أذكر التأثر الذي أصابني (وأنا طالب في الإعدادية) عندما قرأت للمرة الأولى عبقريات العقّاد (عبقرية محمّد وأبوبكر وعمر) التي قدمني فيها العقّاد للإنساني في هذه الشخصيات بعد أن حولها منهج التربية الإسلامية في لاوعيي لنماذج صارمة بعيدة عن إنسانيتها وصلتها الوثيقة بالحياة.

Nikos Kazantzakis (1883 - 1957) was one of the greatest Greek writers of the last century. In 1957, he lost the Nobel prize to Albert Camus by one vote. One vote!! Ugh!

Most people who hear about "The last temptation of Christ" immediately think of the 1988 Scorsese movie with Willem Dafoe as Jesus - and other equally atrociously miscast actors - a film that was meant to come across as scandalous and provocative, in the typical Hollywood low-brow fashion.

I never saw the movie and probably never will. That is a very good thing if you're going to read the book, because this is a very complex and beautiful work, that Hollywood would never be able to do justice to.

I loved many parts of the book. The language is very poetic, and I found that NK was great at reproducing the spiritual fervor of the time in Palestine, the social acceptance of visions, miracles, prophecies, and overall a very intense and palpable spiritual reality.

In short, all that we have lost today in the West.

Someone will argue "we’ve lost it for good and for bad", but my opinion is that it is only for the bad. Our loss. We have shrunk from a large, human dimension to the dimension of things. Anyway, that's a different topic (see some modern scientist who states that everyone in ancient times suffered from a form of schizofrenia. Fascinating theory, although probably wrong. Sounds more like a way to formalize the mental state of modern westerners as "healthy and better", which is obviously extremely arguable).

Back to the book. Is NK's Jesus a credible, authentic, realistic Jesus ?

Definitely not.

I will summarize here the opinion of Lord Williams, former Archbishop of Canterbury and one of my intellectual heroes.

In this video https://youtu.be/Iz3JtpMMUxc he says that, in his view, from a classical Christian theology perspective, NK gets some things right about Jesus and some other things not so right.

Lord Williams says: "One of the things that make us human is that we can allow the divine light to flood us and fill us, or as some theologians say, we can grow into the divine image. So I think Kazantzakis is right in saying that it's not a question of just one eccentric individual who lived centuries ago, but it is about the destiny of humanity, it is about how humanity itself grows into that divine image. Where NK.'s view is more at odds with a classical Christian view (and perhaps more indebted to a 19th century religious perspective) is that he tends to merge the divinity / humanity tension with the flesh / spirit tension, which historically and theologically is not correct".

Still Lord Williams about this book: "They said NK tried to portray a Jesus who was more human and relatable than the one in the Gospel. I think for a Christian Jesus must be "like us" enough to understand what he meant, what he was all about, and "different enough" to spring from the trap of a humanity that's turned on itself. However, the paradox in NK's narrative is that Jesus is this extraordinarily unusual, tormented and unique individual. To try and make out his psychology in the novel is very hard work, I'm not at all sure if I understand quite what the enormous gear shifts in the story are all about. In some ways, in trying so hard to make Jesus more "human", he created a Jesus at least as difficult and remote as the Jesus of the classical theology".

And this: "The notion that Jesus is in a state of constant inner flux about his identity and mission ... I'm not so sure. In the gospel, the tension comes from someone who knows who he is and again and again he needs to confront the cost and the consequences of that. But that's very different from the unceasing struggle of NK's Jesus to find a place to stand."

I very much agree with these comments.

In this book, Jesus is not just someone who has a doubt here and there, and therefore is more "relatable", as many have said. He is a man in constant, unceasing spiritual pain, scared of his own shadow and insecure about pretty much everything. He lives a life of torment, and even during his short public career, he is constantly shocked in front of the miracles he can make, always reluctant with regards to his mission.

The communion of Jesus with God is portrayed as a curse (almost a mental illness) rather than a loving relationship. Rather than Jesus being highly educated in the Scriptures as he must have been, and a confident leader, God seems to be using this poor, sickly and bizarre fool as a mere instrument for his plans.

So, Jesus as a person comes across as a mentally unstable man who's gifted with deep sensitivity and extraordinary intuition, but has no confidence at all about what he is doing and no real idea where he is going.

Despite what the Hollywood movie tried to imply, the real "last temptation" of Christ in this narrative is not sex, but domesticity. While on the cross, Jesus dreams of being old, married and with kids and grandkids, as his final temptation.

Another issue I have with this work is that Mary is presented as a very embittered woman, a mother with a heart closed on itself, constantly thinking about her own misfortunes rather than the good of Joseph and Jesus. Such a huge difference between this Mary and the one shown in Mel Gibson's "The Passion", who unflinchingly supports her son until the very last moments of his life.

Also, while Jesus of the gospels simply warned the rich about the fact that it will be difficult for them to enter the kingdom of God, NK's Jesus keeps referring to them as enemies, as people without any hope.

As for the movie, Scorsese wanted to bring this peculiar Christ to his audience in his modern guise, as an unsettling, tortured Jesus, unsure whether his inner voices are divine or demonic, and torn between his love of the flesh and his need for the spirit. Like he demonstrated with his latest movie "Silence" as well, Scorsese seems to be drawn towards extremely contrived versions of Christianity, that seem to lack spontaneity and heart. And, of course, for him there needs to be sex and violence, which doesn’t elevate his work, but rather, unfortunately, it often lowers it to mud.

In any case, if you are accustomed to Jesus as he is portrayed in the gospels, Kazantzakis' Jesus will be shocking. He is a troubled young man, attacked by pains that mimic bird's claws, nagged by his mother, and disappointed in his father.

But most striking is how passive and inept he is and how constantly unsure he is of his divine calling. And without Judas he would be lost (?!). Yes, one of the many inventions of NK is the role of Judas in the story of Jesus. Judas is the strongest apostle, the only one who is able to give strength and courage to Jesus, and in many instances he turns out to be the one who actually leads Jesus. Quite a weird, interesting take.

Don't get me wrong - this is undoubtedly a powerful, poetic, wonderful novel.

There are many scenes that draw you in with their sheer power and intensity, and I think anyone can enjoy this work, no matter where their heart is in terms of spiritual matters.

But the Jesus portrayed here has probably more to do with NK's personality than with Jesus Christ.

p.s. NK did not believe in any traditional God, nor did he believe in a spiritual afterlife. As a catholic reader, I think I could feel that this book was written by someone who was not religious. This transpires especially from NK's incredible effort to build this monument of a novel to the "historic man" Jesus of Nazareth, and to squeeze all the layers of meaning of the Gospel into the life of an individual using the tools of historical research. This effort does not make sense, and it shouldn't make a lot of sense to a catholic. Like Joseph Ratzinger said, "Jesus was entirely man, but he was also one thing with God. Starting with the 1950's, in many writings the hiatus between the "historic Jesus" and the "Jesus Christ of Catholicism" became wider and wider. But what meaning can Faith have, if the "real" Jesus was in fact so different from how he is described in the gospels? In trying to study and analyze in the most subtle ways the "historic Jesus", scholars ended up in a foggy mist, losing sight of Jesus Christ as he is proclaimed by the Church."

In other words, the evangelists described Jesus and the facts that took place in his life, but they also went beyond the historicity of those facts, therefore allowing Jesus to live not only in our physical dimension, and to have an eternal presence and eternal life, not only a "human" life. Christian faith is based upon an intimate relationship with God and with Jesus. If you limit Jesus only to the historic perspective, which is quite vague because we don't have a lot of available data, you risk undermining this relationship and having the faithful reach for something that is very elusive. The reality of Jesus Christ, his presence in the Church today, goes beyond and is much broader than the life of the "historic" Jesus.

۱. داستان
آشنایی‌زدایی از شخصیت‌های شناخته شده همیشه برای من جذابیت داشته و کازانتزاکیس هم توی این رمان همین کارو کرده و روایت جدیدی از داستان آشنای مسیح ارائه داده. معمولاً می‌گن که مسیح این داستان انسانی‌تره و تردیدها و ترس‌ها و مخصوصاً «وسوسه»های یک انسان رو داره. اما آشنایی‌زدایی کازانتزاکیس فقط توی الوهیت‌زدایی از مسیح خلاصه نمی‌شه. شخصیت‌های انجیل، از یهودا و مریم مجدلیه و باراباس گرفته، تا شخصیت‌های فرعی‌تری مثل الیعازر و شمعون قیروانی هم رنگ و بوی جدیدی پیدا کردن و ماجراهای جذابی دارن.

۲. نقد
نقطه ضعف بزرگ کتاب، عدم انسجام مضمونه. اگر جذابیت آشنایی‌زدایی از شخصیت‌های انجیل رو کنار بذاریم، دقیق مشخص نیست که کازانتزاکیس تهش می‌خواد چه نتیجه‌ای از این داستان بگیره و چی بگه. حرف و پیام داستان مشتته و گاهی حتی بین دو مضمون متضاد رفت و برگشت می‌کنه و انگار نمی‌تونه تصمیم بگیره کدوم رو می‌خواد بپذیره.

مثال اصلی این عدم انسجام، چرخش عقیدهٔ عیساست. عیسای کازانتزاکیس تا قبل از چله نشینی در بیابون، یک پیام رو تبلیغ می‌کنه و بعد از برگشتن از چله نشینی در بیابون به نظر تغییر عقیده داده و پیام جدیدی رو تبلیغ می‌کنه. تا قبل از چله نشینی، پیام عیسی عشقه، عشق بی قید و شرط، بین یهودی و رومی، بین فقیر و غنی، بین ظالم و مظلوم. یهودای اسخریوطی این رو قبول نداره و می‌گه اول باید جهان نظام جدیدی بگیره و رومی‌ها رو بیرون کنیم و حق فقرا رو از اغنیا بگیریم، بعد به فکر عشق باشیم و تا زیربنا که ماده است اصلاح نشه، روبنا که روحه نمی‌تونه اصلاح بشه.

بعد از چله نشینی عیسی بدون مقدمات کافی، به همین عقیده می‌رسه، لحن موعظه‌هاش خشمگین و خوفناک می‌شه، و دیگه عشق رو تبلیغ نمی‌کنه و به جاش پایان قریب الوقوع جهان و سوختن شهرها و نابود شدن نظام‌های تثبیت‌یافته رو تبلیغ می‌کنه. یهودا از این چرخش خوشحال می‌شه و برای اولین بار دست عیسی رو می‌بوسه.

خب این اگه مضمون داستان بود، خوب بود. هر چند من ترجیح می‌دادم روند تغییر عیسی برعکس اتفاق بیفته، یا حداقل دلایل کافی برای این چرخش ارائه بشه که من خواننده هم متقاعد بشم و با عیسی همدل باشم، اما این مشکل بزرگ نیست.

مشکل بزرگ اینه که کازانتزاکیس انگار خودش از این چرخش خیلی راضی نیست، یا فراموش می‌کنه که چنین چرخشی در عیسی رخ داده، و مدام پیام عیسی رو بی مقدمه تغییر می‌ده، یک فصل در میون، یک بار عیسی عشق بی قید و شرط رو تبلیغ می‌کنه و یهودا باهاش مخالفت می‌کنه و یک بار از نابودی جهان خبر می‌ده و یهودا ازش راضیه.

چند مورد دیگه در داستان چنین اتفاقی می‌افته و من خواننده سرگردان توی این آشفتگی‌ها، نمی‌تونم یه مضمون ثابت پیدا کنم تا حسم به داستان اجازهٔ رشد پیدا کنه.

اقتباس سینمایی مارتین اسکورسیزی از این داستان معروفه. اما غیر از اون، نادر طالب زاده یه بخش از فیلم ضعیف «بشارت منجی» خودش رو از این رمان اقتباس کرده. توی این رمان کازانتزاکیس ضمن آشنایی‌زدایی‌های متعددش، تصویر جدیدی از باراباس (راهزنی که پیلاطس مردم رو مخیر کرد بین اون و مسیح یکی رو انتخاب کنن) ارائه می‌ده: باراباس کازانتزاکیس یه راهزن بی سر و پا نیست و عضو گروه یهودی‌های «غیور»ه که به روایت یوسفوس، مورخ یهودی، حوالی زمان مسیح علیه رومی‌ها شورش کردن. و باراباسه که ایلعازر رو بعد از زنده شدن در صحنه‌ای بی نظیر، دوباره می کشه. این تصویر از باراباس در انجیل‌ها نیومده، و حاصل تخیل کازانتزاکیسه، اما نادر طالب زاده این رو به عینه از این رمان گرفته و توی فیلم خودش آورده، بدون این که این رمان رو در انتهای فیلم به عنوان منبع ذکر کنه، حداقل من یادم نمیاد.

في فيلم آجورا agora.. وهو واحد من أفلامي المفضلة منذ فترة، قال واحد من ضمن الأبطال، المسيحيين، من أوائل المسيحيين المتدينين في الإسكندرية، معاتبًا صديقه الملحد - أو الفيلسوف - قائلًا: من أنت كي تسائل الرب؟ كيف لك أن تعرف ما الصواب وما الخطأ في حكمه؟
في هذه الرواية، جاء ما يشابه ذلك على لسان واحد من أبطالها كذلك، قائلًا: "الآلهة أحكامها غامضة، وهم حتى لا يبذلون جهدًا كافيًا لتوضيحها، إنها عميقة الغور" أو ربما قال ما يشابه ذلك.

Back in October of 2002 my parents had the wacky idea to take a family vacation in Florida. I wasn't too keen on the idea, but I went along with it because none of the excuses I could come up with sounded good.

I started thinking about this book because the it was something I read while on this vacation, and this vacation was the scene for one of my big anxiety induced breakdowns, where I acted out in very undesirable ways, made everyone around me really uncomfortable and probably baffled my family by wondering why their son/brother ended up curled up on a couch crying less than two hours after landing.... and since I pulled a minor reprise of the Greg completely loses his shit anxiety show this evening it made me think about this vacation. And then this book. And to get my mind out of the anxiety ghetto I thought maybe I'd write a review to help move my brain back to it's usual state.

The flight down was a horrific ordeal. I hate to fly under the best circumstances. Flying for me is physically painful the pressure of taking off and landing feels like needles are being stuck into my head. I can barely hear anything while I'm in the air (or for a couple of hours once I land), my sinuses generally feel like they are filled with expanding balloons and I find the seats in airplanes to be really uncomfortable with not inadequate legroom so my knees are usually jammed into the seat in front of me.

That is my situation in the best possible conditions for flying. On this particular flight I was flying on Jet Blue, which was the equivalent in 2002, at least for flights from NYC to Orlando, as being about as white trash as riding the Greyhound bus between rural area A and rural area B. This flight was all the pain of flying coupled with all the worst parts of any bus ride I'd ever taken.

This is going somewhere. At the time I took my awful flight to Florida I was reading this book. My plan had been to bring the book, read it on the plane and hopefully make the two hour flight go by really quickly. That didn't work. I succeeded in getting my seat and started to read the book while the rest of the cretins were boarding. And I was reading my book, minding my own business when the person sitting next to me sat down. It was a woman, and she probably weighed close to three hundred pounds. She didn't fit into her own seat and spilled out liberally into my personal space. I don't like having physical contact with strangers so I wedged myself as far from her as possible, but still couldn't really escape some physical contact. She loudly complained to her equally large husband that she didn't have enough room and about the rudeness of other people who take up too much space (I guess that would be me), she then proceeded to dig through a large paper shopping back filled with snacks and began eating. I was feeling disgusted by my neighbor. It was after I began to think, what a disgusting and loud person this is (she was loudly commenting on what she was eating with her husband who sat across the aisle, who was also eating from his own big paper bag of snacks) that she turned her attention briefly away from her feeding to notice what I was reading. She then loudly told her husband that I was reading a disgusting book and how could anyone read something like that. She may have gone on about my book for a while longer but her attention returned to her feeding.

Once the plane started to take off my ears and sinuses did their thing and I couldn't read anymore. I spent the rest of the flight staring at the little TV screen, watching the progress of where the plane was on a map.

I'm amazed that a person had the kind of reaction she had to this book. It had been quite a while since the movie had pissed off Christians and caused a sensation. But she remembered and probably lots of other people did too, but what they thought of the book (and movie) didn't necessarily have anything to do with what was actually in either. I remember when the movie came out all the uproar, and what passed into my young teenage mind was that Jesus has fantasies of graphic sex with Mary Magdalene while he's on the cross. This isn't what the last temptation of Jesus is in either the book or movie. The temptation that the devil gives to Jesus is the possibility of living a regular life. Marrying Mary Magdalene, having a family, not being crucified, not having the weight of being a savior on his shoulders. Having a happy life. Being a man instead of the son of God (so yes in the temptation he would have had sex, but it would be like the sex people normally have who are married and have kids).

I don't understand what the problem Christians have with this. Personally, after reading the book and seeing the movie I'd be more willing to take the Jesus story seriously. It adds a humanity to the figure of Christ and creates a sort of existential hero out of Jesus, as opposed to a rather boring story of a thing that knows it's a God and goes through with an ordeal of pain knowing full well that it can't really hurt him since he is more divine than human. The story in this book is almost a reverse of Pascal's Wager. Jesus could be divine, but he's uncertain. The Devil offers him the choice of taking the consolation prize, grabbing the sure thing of a happy life. Not taking the Devil's offer is taking the old Kierkegaard leap, trusting with faith and knowing somewhere in the back of your mind that all the suffering could be in vain.

What I find disgusting is the idea that Christians would be so disturbed with the humanity and doubts of Jesus. I'd get it if they found the whole Jesus was a man thing disgusting, but they have no trouble with knowing he was man enough to be die. What sick fucks! The only humanity that they will give to the guy who they claim to worship is the human condition to die. To live, to be human, is an outrage to them.

I loved this book and the movie.

✍🏻 One of the things I’ve always appreciated about Nikos’s writing is its lyricism, his use of fascinating similes and metaphors, the poetic way of his style. This can be quite startling. I probably enjoy that about his fiction as much or more than his storylines and characterization. So, that alone is a reason for reading this famous work of his.

✨ It seems to me there was some fuss over this novel. It’s fiction. It’s a story. Chill. Take it, leave it, but let an author explore and imagine. Let them create worlds that might be or might never be, but that take your mind and spirit into other realms and other ways of looking at the reality that sprawls around us: past, present, future, infinity.

أقف حائراً متردداً في تقييم هذه الرواية وبعد تفكير قررت أن أقيمها على هذا النحو.. دعني أقول لك أنها وعرة قاسية ومؤلمة في نفس الوقت جزء منها عاطفي شجي حماسي يلهب القلوب ،أما الجزء الآخر فأشبه بدوامة فاغرة فاها لتلتهم كل الصفحات السابقة والقادمة ربما..

عند التحدث عن الجانب الأدبي نلاحظ تلك البراعة والأتقان والسحر وتحويل المشاهد الى صور واقعية ومشاهد خلابة من خلال الجمل والكلمات وربط المواقف مع بعضها وإندماجها مع محيطها تجد نفسك داخل الرواية تلامس شخصياتها وتعايشها حتى أنك تتنبأ بحزنها وغضبها ويأسها وربما أكثر المشاهد المؤثرة هي عندما كان يهوذا الأسخريوطي يغضب ويعض على شفته لكي لا يتكلم ويضرب الأرض بعصاه ويمزق ثيابه ويبصق في الهواء.. يجتاحك ذلك الشعور بالألم وانت أمام بعض من تلك المواقف الشديدة الحساسية المتناقضة..
هذا الاسلوب محبب جداً لدي فيه أشعر بالرواية من داخلها وأسال نفسي ما هو السرد.. أنه ليس موجوداً أنك تعيش في كنف الرواية لا حاجة لمن يتحدث نيابة عن الوقائع التي تجري أمامك وتشاهدها وتتفاعل معها..
بكل بساطة عندما تقرأ هذه الرواية تشعر أنك الجزء الخفي فيها ،ذلك الجزء الذي لم يُكتب لم ينتبه إليه أحد، ولكنك كنت موجوداً طوال أحداث الرواية وكنت شاهداً على ما يجري ..

لم أشعر بوخزة ملل وأنا أقرأ الرواية.. لم يتح لي ذلك في الحقيقة كنت متسمراً أشاهد مايجري..

نيكوس كازانتزاكيس هو معجزة أدبية بحد ذاته يكتب لا يقنع أحد بل يكتب لذاته، لقلبه .. ليس لديه ميزان محدد يقيس به روايته.. يكتب يكتب ثم يكتب،، يجن أحياناً ويصبح تارة أخرى قديساً يذكرك بالرب ويضيء مثل القديسين ويتحدث بإسم المسيح نفسه..

تبدأ الرواية بالحلم الذي يراه اليسوع وهو نائم في ورشته يصنع الصليب حيث يرى الملائكة والشياطين تتصارع وتبشر بقدومه ملكاً لبني إسرائيل، ثم في الاجزاء التالية ينطلق نحو الصحراء ليعتزل البشر ويقيم في محراب عتيق لعبادة الرب ثم يرجع الى قريته ليبشر بالدعوة ويلاقي معاندة ومكابرة من بني قومه ولا يتبعه الا بعض الحواريين.. ينطلق بعدها الى الصحراء من بعد لقائه بـ يوحنا المعمداني (وهو يحيى-عليه السلام) من جديد ليكلم الرب كما يزعم الكاتب ويرجع بعد ذلك وهو ليس إبن الانسان بل إبن الرب كما يزعمون..

ينطلق بعدها ليبشر وينذر وتظهر معجزاته في بني إسرائيل فتقوم طائفة منهم بتسليمه الى بيلاطس لكي يقوم بصلبه ..

وهذا المشهد معروف ،العشاء الاخير ثم آخذه للصلب وتعليقه على الصليب ووضع اكليل الشوك على رأسه وغرز المسامير في يده..

في هذه النقطة تختلف الرواية عن ماهو مدون في الإنجيل، حيث حسب رواية نيكوس، يأتي الملاك الحارس الى الصليب وينقذه ويذهب به تحت جناحيه فيبدأ حياة جديدة حيث يتزوج إمرأتين وينجب ويسمي نفسه اليعازر ويعمل نجاراً كما كان في السابق حتى يأتي اليه تلاميذه السابقون ويتحدثون اليه أنه قد خذلهم وفرط بهم وتنازل عن الصلب لأنقاذ البشرية وعاش حياة بعيدة عن آلامهم وطموحاتهم.. بعد ذلك تراه يندم ويبكي فيجد نفسه معلقاً بالصليب وهو على حاله ويفيق من حلمه وإغواءه..

طبعاً كما قلت الرواية من الجانب الأدبي رائعة وأسطورية تستحق التقدير أما من الناحية الدينية سواء المسيحية والاسلامية فهي بعيدة عن الصواب وتفاصيلها لا تليق بحياة المسيح ذلك النبي التقي النقي الطاهر الذي لم يقترف في حياته خطيئة قط.. لم يعجبني تصوير المسيح بهذا الشكل بالرغم أنه قريب من الانسان ولكن ليس بهذا الشكل المفرط والمتطرف أحياناً.. وغيرها كثير من هذا النوع تجاه الرب والمسيح والحواريين لم أجدها وصفاً مناسباً وحتى ومتناقضة داخل الرواية نفسها.. وهذه مادفعني لهذ�� التقييم الذي يجده الكثيرون غير مبرر ولا يتناسب مع جمال الرواية الأدبي..

Ο Καζαντζάκης έπλασε μια ιστορία στην οποία ο Ιησούς παρουσιάζεται πιο ανθρώπι��ος και λιγότερο..."θεικός". Ένας νεαρός που αναζητάει τον σκοπό της ζωής του, αγαπάει μία γυναίκα, έχει ορμές και γενικά ότι κάνει το κάνει με πάθος! Βασανίζεται για χρόνια μέχρι να καταφέρει να καταλάβει ότι ο πραγματικός του σκοπός είναι να σώσει το ανθρώπινο γένος μέσα από το θάνατό του. Και εκεί είναι που αμφισβητεί την επιλογή του Θεού στο πρόσωπό του, φοβάται ότι δε θα τα καταφέρει, σκέφτεται όπως θα σκεφτόταν κάθε άνθρωπος!
Μου άρεσε πάρα πολύ αυτό το ταξίδι ενός "έυθραυστου" προσώπου προς την κατανόηση της ύπαρξης και τη μετάβαση στην αιωνιότητα μέσα από το φόβο και την αμφιβολία!

Κρίμα που έχει δεχθεί τέτοια αρνητική κριτική τόσο το βιβλίο, όσο και ο συγγραφέας...

Την πρώτη φορά που θα ανοίξετε ένα βιβλίο του Καζαντζάκη, θα μπείτε σε ένα εντελώς καινούργιο μαγικό κόσμο και θα συνειδητοποιήσετε πως ότι κι αν είχατε διαβάσει τόσο καιρό, ήταν σαν να "παίζατε με κούκλες".
Επιλέγω αυτό το βιβλίο ως αγαπημένο μου από τον Άγιο Καζάντζακο, ίσως και επειδή ήταν το πρώτο του που διάβασα.
Η ιστορία του ανθρώπου που νίκησε τη φύση του για να γίνει Θεός, είναι ότι πιο συναρπαστικό έχει γραφτεί.

In one of the rare times that fanatical religious and atheists agree, both are absolutely convinced that this is a blasphemous and anti-Christian book. So the first use this book to denounce the author and in his person everyone else, and they do not use it as a weapon to offend Christians, claiming the second use the book as a weapon against them, claiming that it reveals hidden truths that the church would like not to be revealed. Of course, none of this is true, on the contrary, in my opinion, it is a deeply Christian book, which penetrates deep into the Christian truth and deals with issues that are at the heart of it.

Of course, while reading it, a Christian will certainly face various problems and will have to bypass several things to get to the heart of what the author wants to say. There are certainly a lot of heretical views, several points in the story seen with a different eye, some annoying images and of course you have to get used to the fact that the pious protagonists of the gospels are sounding and behaving like Zorba the Greek. He should, however, show a little leniency and look behind all and focus on what the author wants to say, not on the way he says it.

You see, the author did not intend to write a new Gospel that would reveal the true story of Christ that some have hidden for centuries. In fact, he follows the Gospels of the New Testament quite faithfully, without significant differences in events and situations, what changes are the interpretation of these events. Following the ideas expressed in several of his novels and other works, the author sees the story of Christ as a repetition of the classic pattern of the struggle between flesh and spirit. Kazantzakis' Christ is not the sure god-man, that has overcome his doubts, he has subjugated his human nature and he confidently takes the road to heaven. On the contrary, he is a man who fights with his divine nature, who resists his destiny, who has fears and doubts. Of course, the heavenly calling is stronger than anything and in the end it prevails but this prevalence of the spirit towards the flesh is anything but easy and peaceful. To use the language of the author, the spirit and the flesh are two beasts struggling to tear each other apart and in the middle are all of us and this struggle is at the heart of human existence. Using the person of Christ, the author talks about this struggle in a truly staggering way, making this book particularly important.

Of course, there are many other things in the book that may not be directly related to the story of Christ. The search for a way to deal with injustice, the issue of violence, the Church's relationship with power, the need for revolution but also more theological things such as sin, punishment, and forgiveness. All of these are given in the author's special way, which, as I said above, may seem strange, but in the end the reader who approaches this book with a free mind will discover a lot and get into the process of thinking even more. That's why it's a really great book.

Σε μία από τις σπάνιες φορές που συμφωνούν φανατικοί θρησκευόμενοι και άθεοι είναι απόλυτα πεπεισμένοι ότι αυτό είναι ένα βλάσφημο και αντιχριστιανικό βιβλίο. Έτσι οι μεν χρησιμοποιούν αυτό το βιβλίο για να καταγγείλουν τον συγγραφέα και στο πρόσωπο τους όλους τους υπόλοιπους, οι δε το χρησιμοποιούν ως όπλο για να πειράξουν τους χριστιανούς, ισχυριζόμενοι ότι το βιβλίο στρέφεται εναντίον τους και αποκαλύπτει κρυμμένες αλήθειες που η εκκλησία θα ήθελε να μην αποκαλυφθούν. Φυσικά τίποτα από όλα αυτά δεν ισχύει, αντιθέτως, πρόκειται κατά τη γνώμη μου, για ένα βαθύτατα χριστιανικό βιβλίο, που διεισδύει στο βάθος της Χριστιανικής αλήθειας και πραγματεύεται ζητήματα που βρίσκονται στην καρδιά της.

Βέβαια σίγουρα κατά την ανάγνωση ένας χριστιανός θα αντιμετωπίσει διάφορα προβλήματα και θα πρέπει να προσπεράσει αρκετά πράγματα για να φτάσει στην ουσία αυτών που ο συγγραφέας θέλει να πει. Υπάρχουν σίγουρα πολλές αιρετικές αντιλήψεις, αρκετά σημεία της ιστορίας ιδωμένα με ένα διαφορετικό μάτι, κάποιες ενοχλητικές εικόνες και φυσικά θα πρέπει να συνηθίσει το γεγονός ότι οι ευσεβείς πρωταγωνιστές των ευαγγελίων ακούγονται και φέρονται σαν τον Ζορμπά. Θα πρέπει, όμως, να δείξει λίγη επιείκεια και να δει πίσω από όλα αυτά και να επικεντρωθεί σε αυτό που ο συγγραφέας θέλει να πει, όχι στον τρόπο που το λέει.

Βλέπετε, ο συγγραφέας δεν είχε σκοπό να γράψει ένα καινούργιο Ευαγγέλιο που θα αποκαλύπτει την αληθινή ιστορία του Χριστού που κάποιοι έκρυψαν για αιώνες. Στην πραγματικότητα ακολουθεί αρκετά πιστά τα Ευαγγέλια της καινής διαθήκης, χωρίς σημαντικές διαφοροποιήσεις σε γεγονότα και καταστάσεις, αυτό που αλλάζει είναι η ερμηνεία αυτών των γεγονότων. Ακολουθώντας τις ιδέες που εκφράζει σε αρκετά από τα μυθιστορήματα του και σε άλλα έργα του ο συγγραφέας βλέπει την ιστορία του Χριστού ως μία επανάληψη του κλασικού μοτίβου της πάλης ανάμεσα στη σάρκα και το πνεύμα. Ο Χριστός του Καζαντζάκη δεν είναι ο σίγουρος θεάνθρωπος που έχει νικήσει τις αμφιβολίες του, έχει υποτάξει την ανθρώπινη φύση του και με αυτοπεποίθηση παίρνει το δρόμο για τον ουρανό. Αντιθέτως είναι ένας άνθρωπος που παλεύει με τη θεία φύση του, που αντιστέκεται στο πεπρωμένο του, που έχει φόβους και αμφιβολίες. Φυσικά το ουράνιο κάλεσμα είναι ισχυρότερο από όλα και στο τέλος επικρατεί αλλά αυτή η επικράτηση του πνεύματος απέναντι στη σάρκα κάθε άλλο παρά εύκολη και ειρηνική είναι. Για να χρησιμοποιήσω τη γλώσσα του συγγραφέα, το πνεύμα και η σάρκα είναι δύο θεριά που παλεύουν να ξεσκίσουν το ένα το άλλο και στη μέση βρισκόμαστε όλοι εμείς και αυτός ο αγώνας βρίσκεται στην καρδιά της ανθρώπινης ύπαρξης. Ο συγγραφέας χρησιμοποιώντας το πρόσωπο του Χριστού μιλάει για αυτόν τον αγώνα με έναν τρόπο πραγματικά συγκλονιστικό, κάνοντας αυτό το βιβλίο ιδιαίτερα σημαντικό.

Φυσικά πέρα από αυτά υπάρχουν και πάρα πολλά άλλα πράγματα μέσα στο βιβλίο που ίσως δεν έχουν άμεση σχέση με την ιστορία του Χριστού. Η αναζήτηση ενός δρόμου για την αντιμετώπιση της αδικίας, το ζήτημα της βίας, η σχέση της Εκκλησίας με την εξουσία, η ανάγκη της επανάστασης αλλά και πιο θεολογικά ζητήματα όπως η αμαρτία, η τιμωρία και η συγχώρεση. Όλα αυτά δίνονται με τον ιδιαίτερο τρόπο του συγγραφέα, που, όπως είπα παραπάνω, ενδέχεται να φανεί περίεργος, αλλά στο τέλος ο αναγνώστης που θα προσεγγίσει αυτό το βιβλίο με ελεύθερο πνεύμα θα ανακαλύψει πολλά και θα μπει στη διαδικασία να σκεφτεί ακόμα περισσότερα. Για αυτούς τους λόγους είναι ένα πραγματικά σπουδαίο βιβλίο.

I read this book at a very interesting time: In 1967 I was working in Jeddah, about 600 hundred miles south of Judea, training Saudi soldiers on the Raytheon Hawk Missile program. I had just visited Greece the month before with a Greek-American colleague where we had to be discreet in discussing politics. Subsequently, on April 21st the Greek military staged a coup. Two months later, June 1967, Nasser of Egypt would attack Israel which caused his defeat and reversals all over the Middle East. In 1965-66 I had visited Nazareth, Jerusalem, Bethlehem, Tiberias, and Eilat, among other villages and cities in Jordan and Israel mostly by bus and hitchhiking night and day.

When you read this book, especially having seen the cities and land, you see Jesus's life much more clearly, and you get a better understanding of the Apostles, especially and essentially Judas Iscariot, Jesus's family, and how Jesus became who he was. This wonderful historical novel along with my esoteric travels had a profound effect on me and blew away some of the fluff in my head about the version of Christianity that I was brought up on.

An essential book for anyone who is from the Christian tradition and who loves superb historical fiction. (Kazantzakis also wrote Zorba--another classic which exemplifies parts of the Greek soul.)

This book is a scream. Pure scream made out of love and pain. And it will sound until the end of time. That is all I can say.
Maybe because of this book Nikos Kazantzakis is buried on the wall surrounding the city of Heraklion near the Chania Gate, because the Orthodox Church ruled out his being buried in a cemetery.

His epitaph reads "I hope for nothing. I fear nothing. I am free."

الماضي؛ ذلك الذي يحفظه كل أحد ككف يديه؛ إن لم يكن لديك القدرة على جعل كل من يقرؤه يفغر فاه وكأنها المرة الأولى التي يعرفه فيها

It has been almost 25 years since I read this and I really ought to re-read it, for I SO loved it the first time encountered it. Two stories... I recommended it to a friend of long standing who is a devout Orthodox Christian, thinking he might enjoy the "mind-game" Kazantzakis played. But he declined because his priest disapproved of the author and because of the brouhaha in Kazantzakis' native Greece involving the Orthodox clergy. Pity - My friend's loss. Just after I finished reading it, I received a visit from an acquaintance who was an Orthodox rabbi. He saw the book on my desk and went over and picked it up. "I wonder what he is going to say," I asked myself. The rabbi turned to me and with his eyes brimming he choked out the words, "Is this not one of the the most incredibly beautiful books you have ever read?" I remember the controversy surrounding the movie based on the novel made only a few years later, and I felt sorry for those who felt their sense of "orthodoxy" precluded spiritual fantasy. I never saw the movie. I felt then - and still do - that the book was self-sufficient As I said, this is a book I need to re-visit.

يبدو المسيح في هذه الرواية فكرة مطاطية جدا ً بشكل ٍ غريب ، فهو ابن الله الذي يرغب بالتضحية في نفسه ، و هو نفسه الإنسان الذي يرغب بالحياة كما يشاء ، و كأنه يعترض على إرادة الله ، من أجل خلاص روحه هو فقط ، المسيح هنا خليط ٌ عجيب من الإنسانية و الألوهية و الرسالة و النبوة ، فكرة الصلب و تخليص العالم من آثامه ليست مجرد حلم فقط ، بل فكرة جميلة قادرة على تخدير الإنسانية بأن هناك من كفّر غنها خطاياها ، فكرة الصلب ما كانت لتكون هذه المسيحية من دونها ، هذه الفكرة التي ألهبت قلب الإنسان من خلال مفهوم التضحية من أجل إسعاد الآخرين ، التضحية التي تسحر الجميع ، فالأضحية التي تختار تاريخ استشهادها قادرة على تغيير مصائر البشرية ، فالإنسان بطبعه يحتاج إلى أمثولة مثل هذه من أجل الإيمان بقكرة ٍ ما ، طبيعة الإنسان النتظر إلى الشهيد على أنه طريقة لتكفير الذنوب .

الصليب الذي تخبرنا عنه المسيحية لم يكن خشبا ً أبدا ً بالمطلق ، بل روحا ً حرة قادرة على تخليص الإنسان من آثام الحياة ، و الغوص في ملكوت الروحانية ، هذا الصليب بصورته المسيحية الخالصة صُوّر على أنه بوابة الابن لأبيه ، كان الفكرة الأمثل لتغطية آثام و رغبات الإنسان ، و تخدير عقله من أجل تسويق فكرة ٍ ما ، وحده الشهيد المضحّي يمثل أفضل مادة إعلانية للحياة الآخرة تماما ً كما هي فكرة المرأة و الجسد في الإسلام - الحور العين - .

عن الرواية :

يطرح كازنتزاكيس المسيح على عدة أشكال متغايرة و مختلفة بنفسيات و أرواح لا تمت لبعضها بصلة ، بل إن الصراع بينها دائر ٌ ، أساسه الطمأنينة و التخلص من الشر الكامن في هذه الحياة ، فهذه الأشكال متغايرة في الروح و النفسيات لكنها مشتركة في المصير بالنهاية ، فتارة ً على هيئة إنسان ٍ مضطرب ٍ تصرفاته غير مفهومه بالنسبة للمحيطين به ، انطوائي يعد أموراً ٍ مبهمة ، هذا الإنسان الذي يُرسم له قدره ، و يعاني جراء هذا الرسم حتى ليكاد يهرب منه ، على أن فكرة الهروب ليس من هذا القدر و من الصراع النفسي داخله ، بل من هذا العالم برمته ، و من فكرة الإنسان الذي يعاني خللا ً في أعين الآخرين و اضطراباً غريبا ً يكاد يكون بوادر النبوة التي تحل في قلوب الأنبياء و أرواحهم ، و رغم ذلك فهذا النبي المعد لا يخلو من صراعات ٍ داخل روحه هذه الصراعات التي تقوده إلى مصير ٍ ليس متأكدا ً منه حتى و هو يمارسه .

فهو يعرض يسوع ما قبل النبوة كمتحدث ٍ عن الحب و مبشر ٍ بخلاص البشرية بفكرة طوباوية خارقة حتى للخيال ، هذه الفكرة التي تنسب له الكثير من الاتهامات و التي تجد قبولا ً في قلوب الكثيرين من الناس البسطاء و المعدومين و المحتاجين ، فكرة الطمأنينة و الحب و الأمان و السلام و الإخاء و العدالة التي تجلب لهم الخبز و الخمرة و البيت المريح ، هذه اليوتوبيا التي يتحدث بها إنسان ٌ هو في دخيلته لا يكاد يفهمها ، فهذا المتحدث يخبر عن أشياء أقرب ما تكون إلى الخيال منه إلى الواقع ، ثم فكرة النبي الذي يصبح ابن الله أو المخلّص الذي يبحث عن موته من اجل تحمّل آثام الخيقة و التي تمثلت في مرحلة الصلب ليكون طريق الخلاص للبشرية .

في النهاية تعرض فكرة مغايرة عن المسيح المخلص و عن تلامذته ، فالمسيح الذي استطاب و لو لبرهة فكرة الحياة بشكل ٍ إنساني ٍ عادي ، اكثر من الشكل النبوي و الرسولي و الإلهي ، هذا الشكل الذي لم يعجب تلامذته حتى و لو كانت الفكرة مجرد خيال ٍ في رأسه ، فضمميره الذي صوّر له غضب أصدقائه سداً في سبيل هذه الحياة ، فالكاتب يرى أن التلاميذ استطابوا فكرة الصلب ، كي تكون وسيلة ً يستفاد منها لا أكثر ، فالصلب كرمز ٍ ديني مثله مثل الكنيسة و الكرسي الرسولي و سواها معالم لها دورها في نشر المسيحية و استخدامها كرمزيات روحية تستقطب الكثيرين من أجل الإيمان بهذه الفكرة أو تلك او هذا الدين او ذلك .

تمثل فكرة الصلب بجانب رمزية الخلاص للبشرية و التخفف من أعباء الآثام ، رمزية افتتاح مرحلة الخلود بالنسبة للإنسان المؤمن فالمسيح الذي اختفى من على الصليب و من قبره في اليوم الثالث ، و رحل إلى السماء ما زال يمثّل أجمل أفكار التضحية و خلاص الإنسان من آلامه الشخصية كما آثامه تجاه الله ، و فكرة العدالة و المحبة كفترة نبوته ، قبل أن يكتشف ذاته ابنا ً لله !

این کتاب دارای دیدگاهی «انسانی» و «زمینی شده» به شخصیت عیسی است که پس از انتشار کتاب به شدت مورد اعتراض دستگاه کلیسا و همچنین مسیحیان قرار گرفت. دیدگاه زمینی کازانتزاکیس به مسیح به گونه‌ای است که برای وی احتمال فریب خوردن از شیطان و اسیر وسوسه‌های نفسانی شدن را قائل شده بود. این دیدگاه به فردی که تمامی مسیحیان وی را «خدایی که جسم پوشید» می‌دانند به شدت کفرآمیز تلقی شد. صالح حسینی این کتاب را به فارسی برگرداند و انتشارات نیلوفر برای اولین بار آن را در سال ۱۳۶۰ منتشر کرد. مارتین اسکورسیسی در ۱۹۸۸ فیلمی با همین عنوان از روی کتاب ساخت. در این فیلم ویلم دافو، در نقش عیسی نقش آفرینی می‌کند.

According to the imagination of this Greek writer who was 1 vote away to grab the 1952 Nobel Prize for Literature, Nikos Kazantzakis, the last temptation of Christ happened while he was hanging on the cross. In the book, at that point that he was about to be nailed, the sunny heaven suddenly turned dark, the earth shook and Simon of Cyrene (the innkeeper) saw angels coming down from heaven, were the ones who nailed Jesus to the cross and took him away upon his death.

This book regularly appears in various lists of banned novels. Not surprising because it deviates, horribly or brilliantly (depending on your perspective), from the story as narrated in the Holy Bible. For somebody like me who is fond of reading good fiction novels, I would say that the non-Bible based parts of the story are just too provocative to pass up. These parts are also critical to the story because what Kazantzakis would like to impart to the readers: that we, as human beings, should not despair and lose hope in trying to stay away from sins and temptations. Kazantzakis successfully did this by showing the "more human" nature of Jesus not only during the ministerial part of his life but most especially during his trial and crucifixion.

A very apt book for Lenten read. Some people say that this is blasphemous and sacrilegious just like Dan Brown's The Da Vinci Code. I admit that the controversial non-Bible entries could turn off some conservative or traditional-minded people. I read that when the 1988 film of Martin Sorcese was shown in the UK, the movie, shown in parts, got the most number of complaints ever from viewers. I have not seen that movie and I am not raring to. I am a regular church goer and I finished several units of religion courses in college but I am not disturb in any way by these non-Bible entries courtesy of Kazantzakis:

1) Jesus had a hard time following the will of the father because he is in love with Mary Magdalene, a prostitute.

2} Being a carpenter, he is also a cross-maker. He was the one making crosses used for crucifying criminals. No mention if he was the one who created his own cross though.

3) Mary at some point cursed, not just questioned, God for choosing her to bear Jesus and to marry an old bachelor, Joseph. In fact, both Jesus and Mary referred to their "assignment" as curse from God.

4) Jesus not only knew the Judas, the redheard and blue-eyed disciple, would sold him to Caiphas. Jesus even instructed Judas every step of the way, i.e., who to talk to, what to say, where is the meeting point, at what hour they can pick him up, etc. Judas struggled with this role as he was also very close to Jesus.

5) The apostles did not show themselves during the crucifixion because they were not expecting Jesus to die on the cross. When they were recruited, they thought that the promised "kingdom" of Jesus is similar to that of Roman kings and the promise of "eternal life" is by Jesus making them like mythological immortal gods.

6) In the "last temptation" dream sequence, Mary Magdalene was killed by stone throwing death penalty and the throwing was spearheaded by one of the apostles. Then Jesus became Lazarus and had many, many children with the sisters, Martha and Mary although it was only Mary who Jesus "married."

If you are turned off with any of the above, this book is not for you. However, I took them as just part of the fiction part and for Kazantzakis to drive home his point: that Jesus, like his mother and disciples are just but human. As human, they are like us: encountering temptations every day of our lives and trying to raise up from sins during our stay here on earth. With this novel, I feel closer to Jesus as I know that he also felt what I feel during times of despair from failing to be good.

I also cried a tear this morning. It is this part where Simon of Cyrene was berating Jesus disciplines from not coming out and help Jesus carry his cross. The apostles did not move. So, Simon of Cyrene went out by himself and saw Jesus. Simon waved at him. Jesus's heart rejoiced. Jesus started to nod his head to say goodbye to him but tripped on a stone and collapsed to the ground, the cross over his back. He groaned with pain.

The Cyrenian (Simon) rushed forward, lifted him (Jesus) up, took the cross and loaded it upon his own back. Then he turned and smiled at Jesus. "Courage," he said to him. "I'm here; don't be afraid."

It just eases the pain of struggling away from sins. This book, this line. Brilliant. Clever. Must read, everyone!

هي الرواية التي لابد أن تُقرأ على مهل،لا لشئ إلا لأنها تخاطب الروح، والروح تطالب الشئ بهدوء لكي تتذوقه بما يستحق.

عيسى: كلمة الله وروحه ألقاها في رحم إمرأة عذراء وهي سيدة النساء مريم بنت عمران، لتصبح هي ومولدها آية للعالمين، عيسى : النبي الأكثر تأثيرًا وتغييرًا في حياة البشر من حيث عدد أتباع ملته وكم التأثيرات المهولة التي تسببت به عقيدته ، وكل ذلك وقد مات وصلب (تبعا لعقيدة المسيحين) أو رُفع للإله (تبعا لديانة المسلمين) ، أي أنه انتهى من على الأرض وهو صغير السن ، ولكنه كان عظيم الأثر.

رواية من أعظم ما يكون، فيها الإيمان النابع من القلب والحب الصادق للكتابة، فأتت معجزة أدبية بليغة، صوّر فيها كازنتزاكيس حياة المسيح بصورة إنسانية بالغة الرقة والعذوبة، رواية كُتبت بالقلب ومن القلب فوصلت إلى القلب، رواية عن رحلة الإنسان للتضحية، رواية عن ألم الأم وخذلان الصديق وعظمة الرسول، رواية عن المسيح عيسى ابن مريم.

This is an extraordinary book. The term ‘masterpiece’ is over-used but this is the genuine article. It is no small thing to reinterpret the story of the Passion and I could see from about page five why the Vatican banned it when it was published in 1955.

You need to know the scriptures, especially the Old Testament prophesies, the Gospels and the writings of Paul, to fully understand the extent to which Kazantzakis has subverted them. We meet a feeble Jesus when he is 20 years old, tormented in his dreams and during seizures by visions of pursuing angels insisting he is The One. He fights back by making crosses for Roman crucifixions as evidence of his sinfulness and unfitness for the office of Messiah but he is captured into his mission nonetheless.

Kazantzakis gives us a flawed human Jesus taking on the might of Jewish tradition while his entourage of illiterate fishermen and wild-eyed Zealots simply want to oust the Romans. As is the case within the bible itself, Jesus struggles to convey his concept of heaven on earth, spirit within matter in the here and now, belief in which promises immortality. He resorts to parable after parable but all of it goes over the heads of his followers who hear nothing more than ‘Kingdom’ and ‘riches’ as they pin upon him all their hopes of freedom from Rome.

Spoiler Alert!

All Christians know that Jesus asked God to take the cup of poison from him as he prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane just before he was arrested. Kazantzakis has a disguised Tempter intervene at this point and grant his wish. Cleverly, this alternative outcome is not one of hedonistic indulgence but of ordinary mortal life – marriage, family, tilling the land, and great joy in all of it – until a ragged, firebrand apostle called Paul arrives with a very different version of events that he intends to write down and send out into the world. And thus Jesus is recaptured.

This was a compelling read – admittedly a disjointed one as busy life consumes my reading time – and not one that committed Christians will like at all. There is far more I could say about it, not least the role of women within the novel but I don’t write long reviews so I’ll leave it there.

Ο Καζαντζάκης περιγράφει μυθιστορηματικά την πορεία του Ιησού, ακολουθώντας και αναπλάθοντας τα γεγονότα όπως εκείνα εξιστορούνται στα ευαγγελικά κείμενα, προς τη σταύρωση, αποτυπώνει μυθιστορηματικά τη ζωή και τα πάθη του Θεανθρώπου, προσδίδοντάς τους νατουραλιστική υπόσταση. Επικά και βιβλικά στοιχεία αναμοχλεύονται με κοινωνικές και πολιτικές αξίες/ιδέες, οι έννοιες της θεότητας και του αγώνα ταυτίζονται, ενώ υπέρτατο ιδανικό αναδεικνύεται το σύμβολο του ανθρώπου που διώκεται και βασανίζεται, που θυσιάζεται και αγωνίζεται υπέρ της Ελευθερίας και του ίδιου του Ανθρώπου. Στον πυρήνα της πλοκής βρίσκεται ο δυισμός της καζαντζακικής σκέψης· η πάλη ανάμεσα στο σώμα και την ψυχή, ανάμεσα στη θνητή και την αθάνατη φύση.

Αγωνία μεγάλη· αγαπούσα το σώμα μου, και δεν ήθελα να χαθεί· αγαπούσα την ψυχή μου, και δεν ήθελα να ξεπέσει· μαχόμουν να φιλιώσω τις δυο αυτές αντίδρομες κοσμογονικές δυνάμες, να νιώσουν πως δεν είναι οχτροί, είναι συνεργάτες, και να χαρούν, να χαρώ κι εγώ μαζί τους την αρμονία.

Μην ακούς τι λεν οι μουνούχοι. Τα δε φτάνει η αλεπού τα κάνει κρεμαστάρια. Αυτός που σου λέω εγώ, ο σπιτίσιος όχι ο μοναστηρίσιος, είναι ο αληθινός Θεός. Αυτόν να προσκυνάς. Ο άλλος για τους μουνούχους και τους τεμπέληδες…

Ίσως το πνευματικότερο έργο του Καζαντζάκη (δηλαδή φανταστείτε πόσο ψηλά έχει ανέβει η πήχης - σα να ψάχνει κανείς τη μελωδικότερη σύνθεση του Mozart ένα πράγμα). Το πιο αληθινό. Το πιο καθάριο.
Δε φιγουράρει τυχαία στη λίστα με τα σημαντικότερα δημιουργήματα του μεγάλου μας συγγραφέα.
Αναγνωστική εμπειρία. Πνευματική μέθεξη. Ενδοσκόπηση. Αναζήτηση. Αμφισβήτηση. Αμφιβολία. Κάθαρση.

This is not your grandparent’s gospel. That’s the first thing you must accept if you are going to make it through this novel.

Nikos Kazantzakis states in the introduction to The Last Temptation of Christ, “This book is not a biography; it is the confession of every man who struggles.” He explains that the book explores the “dual substance of Christ,” the struggle between his flesh and spirit - the stronger the struggle the richer the final harmony, a union with God. A struggle that he claims all men go through with Christ as the ultimate example. In other words Christ was a human carrying out God’s Will – not an easy task. And Kazantzakis takes a lot of liberties with the tale to explore his idea - which is where all the controversy comes from.

In the book, after Jesus has asked Judas to betray him, Judas asks Christ, “If you had to betray your master, would you do it?” Jesus replies after reflecting for a long time, “No, I do not think I would be able to. That is why God pitied me and gave me the easier task; to be crucified.” In a lot of ways I think this pretty much sums up Kazantzakis approach to the story. How would a normal human deal with the burden of carrying out God’s will. At every turn Christ struggles with his burden and experiences just about every emotion a human could go through.

If the reader is prepared to explore man’s struggles through a fictionalized tale of Christ then this book is for you. I was won over by the first chapter and couldn’t put it down. It varies greatly from the film (which I also enjoyed) which barley touched the surface of what the novel explores. The writing is a bit heavy at times, it’s not an easy read, and some of the minor character’s become a bit muddled but it doesn’t take away from the story. I found the characters of Jesus and Judas to be fascinating and multidimensional (which surprised me in a story where I was already familiar with them).

In short a captivating novel that at times is a bit hard to get through, which sounds like a bit of a contradiction but is true none the less. It certainly will give the reader plenty to think about.
