Encounters with Angels: The Invisible Companions of Our Spiritual Life

Rate this book
Discreet but ever faithful, the angels play a vital role in God’s plan for our lives. Created as spiritual beings who mediate between us and God, angels serve as our constant companions, advisers, and protectors, watching over us while standing before God’s throne in Heaven. In this powerful new book, Odile Haumonté carefully combines the writings of Scripture, Tradition, and the testimony of saints who met angels face-to-face to unveil for you the breathtaking facts behind these heroic heavenly beings.

Because they are living reflections of the Holy Face they contemplate, angels draw us into the mysteries of Heaven. Haumonté shows you how to identify the subtle signs — not the overtly miraculous but consequential details — of angelic presences in the here and now. You’ll learn where angels are fully present in the Mass and liturgy and the role they play in your personal prayers. You’ll even discover how angels help us to nurture our children’s desire for God and how they lead us into a profound desire to please Jesus.

Take in these pages, and you’ll soon find yourself on an electrifying spiritual journey that opens your eyes to the role angels are playing in the specific choices you make and how you can more effectively place yourself under their protection. You’ll also

The nine classes of angels — what they are and why they matter

It's decent enough and interesting from a theological notes perspective, but it's very much a book tailored to those in the Catholic faith tradition. It speaks to them exclusively. It would have been more enjoyable and engrossing had it instead explored those theological underpinnings from a more universal standpoint and, if seeking a way to convert, work that into more diverse examples of angelic intervention.

As it is, the book winds up more than a little bit underwhelming. I don't say this to be unfair or mean, but to emphasize that I went into this book wanting and expecting it to be something more.

This is a "who's who" of angels. Angels have been with us since we have existed. We each have a guardian angel assigned to us throughout our life. This book goes into the depth of what angels are, & where we can read about them more. (Bible) Angels are in most religions.
Angels have their own rank, 9 choirs of angels. They are pure spirits, divinely empowered to carry out messages & help to us on earth. Angels have appeared to mortals throughout ancient history and even in our own times.
This book will enlighten you about the Angels who are active in our lives, even if we don't notice. Dive on in and be amazed.

This book traced the angels from the Old Testament to the New Testament. Abraham and his three angels, Elijah and his food-carrying angel and many more characters in the Old Testament. Of course, the New Testament started with Gabriel appearing to Mary at the Annunciation, going on to Jesus being tempted by the Devil in the desert and ending with the Crucifixion and Death of Jesus. Of course they were there at the Resurrection to steer Jesus' followers to Galilees to find Jesus.
The author was a great storyteller, and I appreciated her efforts. I also liked her Theological Clarifications at the end of the book.

This is an interesting study of angels. It places them in the context of the working of God in the salvation and sanctification of God's people. The emphasis is on holistic spirituality instead of an off-balance focus on spirit beings. This is a refreshing and devotional theology that even has its own musical playlist. The musical choices are mostly excellent and sometimes surprising. Some of the theology was a little too Roman Catholic for my Methodist sensibilities, but it never strayed into territory that I outright rejected. I am challenged to take angels more seriously after reading this book.

This insightful work enumerates many facets of the angelic experience to an earthbound humanity. While documenting poignant saintly encounters with the angels, it also illuminates how God interacts with his creatures through both the Holy Spirit and his corps of angels. While we have some biblical and saintly references to angels and angel encounters, we can allow ourselves to extrapolate their nature based on what we know about a loving God who wants us to reflect that love to each other. God has assigned and entrusted our care to one celestial guardian (add a body and wings if you like) who works silently through the small turns in our lives to point us toward holiness, allowing us to select the good when the opportunity arrives. “If we look for God’s signs in our daily lives, we will find them,” writes Ms. Haumonte. Since she has written fifty books while mothering five children, we can safely assume that she’s had more than ample authority and first-hand experience with the workings, interactions, and graces of angels.

“We are not only to celebrate the praise of God with our songs but are also to become a glorious praise through our whole life, as St. Elizabeth of the Trinity had sensed: ‘a praise of glory is a soul of silence that remains like a lyre under the mysterious touch of the Holy Spirit so that He may draw from it divine harmonies.’ Angels, who never cease praising Him, lead us in this jubilation.”
