I joined the military to escape my hellish nightmare of a life in the Flats of Portstill, needing more than the dismal surrounding I grew up in. I served my country with pride and honor, but an accident ended my enlistment, forcing me back home, unsure of what my future would be. After a chance meeting with the Death Hounds MC, I found a place that gave me the brotherhood I craved and an outlet for my anger.

When I met Sadie, I saw someone who was hiding from the pain that threatened to tear her apart as she struggled to raise her younger brothers alone. One night, a run-in with a random stranger forced her to run to the MC for protection, and when I saw her, I knew she was meant to be mine. Her painful past and my difficult upbringing created cracks that nearly destroyed us, but we both fought our demons and found our way back to each other. Can our broken souls heal each other, or will the pain keep us on solitary paths?

Now, buried secrets from the past have risen from the ashes, not only affecting Sadie but threatening to tear the Death Hounds apart from the inside out. When the Death Hounds say you’re family, you’re family for life, but what happens when it’s family that betrays you?

And when death comes knocking, who do you want on your side?

This story was disjointed. I did a lot of skimming I did not need to know every detail of getting home from a trip ie: opened my door, turned slightly to open passenger door, got my duffle bag from trunk. This story had potential but I didn’t like the execution.

Why such high rating for this book? There was nothing special about it! Even the MC were not acting like MCs. The instant love had me rolling my eyes. It was so unnatural and childish possessiveness from the hero for the women he didnt knew at all and trust from her end for the hero she has never ever met in her life.

Him blaming his PTSD for cheating on her and so cruelly so that she might walk on them was another childish arc from the author.

Her forgiving him so quickly was meh too. She shouldnt have to forgive him. He is not a nice person if he did that to her in the first place.

GUNNER BY HJ MARSHALL WAS SO DELICIOUS. I GOBBLED UP EVERY WORD AND WANTED SECONDS. 5 DELECTABLE STARS!

What did I just read?! Good gawd Gunner was soooo dang entertaining, soooo flipping good, and I didn’t want it to end. Never, not one dull moment in its entirety. I swear I want to be author HJ Marshall because she is so dang talented. She spun a tale of tragedy, fear, loss, healing, moving forward, forgiveness and unconditional love and created a couple worthy of 5 STARS as well as of being a top 3 contender for favorite couple of 2021. I swear my heart palpitated the entire time I read this book.

Kade. OMG how I loved him. He’s super swoony and melted me to a pile of goo so many times with his words and gestures. He is a very strong Hero in this story but he also has his faults which make him even more endearing to me. He has his demons and as we all know, demons can wreak havoc in one’s life. They can make you do stupid things. Kade is vulnerable to his demons and makes a mistake that will cost him and it does. But there are reasons for it. I will say he pushed me to my hard limits and I wasn’t sure how I felt about him after. To me that is what makes him human. Remorse plays its role and that is what saves him, redeems him for me. He is insanely protective of those he loves and cares for. Do something to someone he cares for and you may not live to regret it. Even as I write this, all the emotions return and my heart gets all wishy washy. Again. I LOVE THIS MAN!!

Kade joined the military to escape his life in the Flats of Portstill where danger is prevalent when you lack a loving caring family. His life growing up was a very hard life indeed. If you're not careful, death can come to you easily. The Flats were run by a very dangerous man who ruled with a deadly iron fist.

Kade loved the military and the brotherhood that came with it. Unfortunately for Kade an accident ended his military career and he found himself back in Portstill to complete his rehab along with dealing with his anger issues.

Then he found the brotherhood he was searching for by way of the Death Hounds Motorcycle Club. This brotherhood was the perfect place for him and his anger.

Kade was now known as Gunner, his new MC road name. It was through the club that he was introduced to his best friend, Bear. Bear watches over and protects Gunner when his ptsd anxiety takes over. It was also where Gunner was introduced to his other best friend, Skid (aka Dalton). It was through Skid and Skid’s Uncle Mick, also a Death Hound, that he met a woman named Sadie… and their lives would never be the same.

Teaser:
“Fate led me home after losing what I thought would be my career, my confidence grew and that led me to Sadie. Without fate’s intervention, I would have wandered the world without knowing who owned the other half of my soul.”

Enter Sadie. There are not enough positive words for me to say that describe how much I adored this woman. Gah!!! I loved her so much. She is now one of my all time favorite Heroines. She’s not only beautiful but she has a beautiful soul. She’s incredibly selfless, caring and strong. She’s insanely talented as a baker and runs a bakery in town. She is smart as well as a fiercely loyal sister and mother figure to her two brothers Dalton and Jacob. Her parents are not in the picture but their mother plays an important role in this story. OMG! is all I can say without giving things away and I will try my best to avoid spoilers.

Sadie struggles with her own ptsd from a horrific event that took place a few years back. An event that shook me to my very core. It’s a past that will give you chills and not the good kind. As I think about that event, I can feel the anger build up inside me. I wish so very hard I could take it all away from Sadie. Her past is extreme. She is suddenly thrust back to the past after something happens to her brother and their lives could be in danger. For that reason, she runs to the only people she can trust and protect her. The Death Hound MC. That’s where Gunner comes in.

I loved this MC so much. They take in and protect Sadie and her little brother Jacob immediately because if you're a part of the club, which Skid (aka Dalton) is, every family member is protected.

As soon Gunner meets Sadie, it’s insta-love all the way baby! Gunner and Sadie have an instant connection, an undeniable attraction to each other. I loved that. Gunner cares for her so much that his anger is wanting to enact revenge against those who hurt her or her brother. He shows her patience and love. He’s so alpha yet so unbelievably soft and gooey with Sadie. Gunner feels that Sadie and Jacob belong to him even if she doesn't know it yet. He will do anything to protect them. Even if that means sacrificing what means most to him.

Their love is innocent and when the time comes for them to move forward, something so shocking takes place and has Sadie running. Running from horror her eyes have seen. An ultimate betrayal. This betrayal pissed me off… Gunner loses the very person he saves and loves and there is no going back. They part ways and when he returns to Portstill a few years later, he tries so hard to win Sadie back. Will that happen? Not if Sadie has anything to say about it.

Sadie and Gunner have their demons they need to face and work out. Along the way, information in a little black book sheds light on the past and evokes an anger in both that sends them reeling. One not knowing the other has this information and bides their time.

Turns out, others who you would never expect have kept dangerous secrets that prove those closest to you have betrayed them. Allowing the possibility that danger could rear its ugly head again and return to finish business. I’m being vague because, well… no spoilers here.

When this couple discovers the truth, will they be able to forgive and put the past behind them? What happens when the truth and those who covered up the past are approached and confronted? Even worse, what will happen to Sadie’s well being when the god awful truth is revealed to her? Can this couple put it behind them and go their separate ways? Or will they confront the demons together head on and do what needs to be done no matter how hard that is? Is there enough forgiveness in them to get past the newly discovered betrayal? Lives are put to the test and it’s survival of the fittest. The truth just might surprise you. It did me and I was rooting and howling in support of how strong someone can be even after the worst sorts of tragedy.

Some of my favorite things:

EEP! My most favorite surprise was that we caught another glimpse of Devlin Callahan from Embracing My Nightmare, book 1 in the Embattled Dreams series. He remains to this day one of my favorite heroes ever.

HUBBA HUBBA HUBBA! My favorite passage was…

Whispering into her ear, I tempered the need in my voice as I encouraged her, “Take what you need, Sadie. I’ve got you, beautiful girl. Let go and I’ll catch you.”

GOOD GRIEF HE STOLE MY HEART! My favorite supporting character was without a doubt, Bear! His protective nature was pure instinct and never faltered. Everyone should have a friend like him.

This book was so delicious. I gobbled up every word and wanted seconds. The author whet my appetite from the very beginning and let me tell you I was stuffed and satisfied when I read the last word. Nothing was left unanswered. I can’t, and I mean REALLY can’t wait for book 2, Skid…..

Do yourself a favor and read Gunner by author H.J. Marshall and fall in love with Gunner and Sadie. It’s a 5-STAR must read!

Cheating

Not sure if the author has any personal experience with military veterans with PTSD or just read some articles. No need to explain every step of coming home from a trip or moving from a room to another room.

Sadie is the niece to a MC member, which should make her family. When the MC "takes care" of the threat to her, they lie and say it's all done. Money and favors to others, covered their supposed good intentions. Gunner cheated on Sadie with a club slut, making sure she would see it happen. Blaming his PTSD for it. Sadie never opened up about what happened to her, just keeping Gunner at arms length.

WOW!

I loved this book! It's intense, suspenseful and sexy as f**k. Gunner and Skid are both members of the Death Hounds MC and are close friends. The first time Gunner sees Skids sister Sadie it's turn off the oven this Turkey is done. Lol. Unfortunately it's not under the best circumstances. Sadie has been sister and mother to both her brothers Skid/Dalton and Jacob both of which she raised from a very young age because their drug addict mother was never around though Sadie was young herself. Their Uncle Mick who was also a member of the Death Hounds stepped up to help take care of them, always making sure they stayed together and not put in foster care or split up. Then one day something horrific happened to Sadie which changed her life. I had tears running down my face while reading what happened to her. Then one day Jacob comes home from school with blood all over his clothes she freaks out but manages to stay calm enough to talk to him to try to find out what happened but he wants his big brother so Sadie takes him and immediately drives to the clubhouse which is where she meets Gunner and she has an instant attraction to him. Their attraction to each other only continues to grow stronger until Gunner sabotages himself and they both lose everything they ever thought was good in their lives. Sadie is so heartbroken she turns her attention to baking and Gunner leaves. As the story goes on I was consumed trying to read faster to find out what was gonna happen next. At times the suspense was almost too much. I was jittery. I highly recommend this book to everyone!

Very disappointing

I was loving this book , the strength honor and loyalty until none was true.. Wish she left Gunner for good he was a dirty lying cheat, her attack was covered up and her uncle knew all along and it just getzbworse....I love dark MC but there were no good brothers and the women were just blind followers....so many chances and all were wasted....won't be reading any more of this author... Hate leaving bad reviews but this was just opposite of what I was exe

Did not like how it drags on and jumps around. Plus if the H is all in for over a year, knows the h is finally ready to take the step in their relationship and he cheats right in front of her. Yup…. Big nope for me.

Gunner and Sadie

This is a first-time author for me and I have to say that she has a new follower in me. This book brought so much to the table with the twists, turns, surprises and steam. Gunner had it bad and joined the military until he was discharged then he was lucky enough to run into two prospects of the Death Hounds MC. That was the start of his new family. We meet Sadie who is a strong woman in her own right and has inconceivable issues from her past as well. Together we are taken on quite the ride that made this a huge page turner for me.

I’m hooked now and can’t wait to read more books from this author.

The beginning was a bit bumpy, unpolished and very sober but then it got better and better, with the personal development, the growth of the characters developed the narrative style and the design. As a result, a very good story, which the beginning did not suggest. Let's see what else is to come or is already there. The cross-references in the last chapters and recommendations in the epilogue give room to try.

Stumbled across the first few chapters of this book in the anthology 'no men left behind' by Elisabeth Knox and others

Why did it take me this long to read this book? I've had it sitting in my Kindle and I keep forgetting about it. My first book by H.J. Marshall and I couldn't be happier with the words and that ending? Speechless! The possibilities I see for this series is all over the place, it's truly is an amazing read.

I laughed, I cried, and I yelled while reading this. I enjoyed the characters, the story, and I am about to start the next book in this series. Two people with their own emotional scars get together, make mistakes but get their HEA, eventually.

DNF'ed at 54%. I was expecting a run of the mill MC romance from this, but I got something way more problematic.

First, insta-love. Which I don’t always hate, but it was pretty painful in this one.

Second, can we stop please with books that categorize women into the pure ones that are worthy of respect and the sluts that aren’t? Right off the bat, women in the book are casually discussed either as wife material or those who can be used and forgotten. This is misogyny, full stop, and nothing I want to be reading about in my romances.

Third, the heroine mentions multiple times that a man’s love would make her whole after being SAed. This is such toxic rhetoric, can we not?

Fourth, I don’t tolerate cheating in my romance. “That might’ve made me an ass, but a man can be patient for only so long.” Yeah, that def makes you an ass with that ‘boys will be boys’ BS.

Fifth, a year of inpatient therapy to deal with some issues from a rough childhood? A year at a mental health inpatient hospital is a long time for some issues that seem super glossed over in this book.

If all that is not enough, the writing is weak. There is a lot of “telling” rather than “showing” and the lazy usage of time jumps to avoid character and relationship development.

Good book

This book was good! There was a few things that me personally don't like to read I don't like cheating and I don't like when the main couple don't have children. Other wise book was really good.

I really like this read! I’m a sucker for an MC book. Add in a gut wrenching cheating scene and a H that redeems himself adds to the win for me
The story flowed and although it spanned over many years, it flowed well. Sadie is a sweet and loving h that breaks down the rough exterior of a broken H.

First time author for us, and we really enjoyed our first read by them and the author did an amazing job starting off a brand-new series as the story was filled with heart, soul, emotion along with tragedy and the story gave us a look into Gunner's past and how he was dealing & handling his demons know that he was out of the military. Loved his instant connection with Sadie, two broken souls who were able for a time to come together and find solace. From the moment they met, they had train wreck written all over their future romance, but, we were rooting for them regardless.

We loved the characters, I thought they were great, and it was easy to loved them. Sadie was saddled with a horrific past that she is still dealing with, and her emotional well-being was fragile, so we loved how Gunner was so loving and patient and kind giving her time a space to work through her emotions and so forth but, sometimes loving someone with your whole heart is not enough especially when you are fighting against your own demons it's hard to fight your women's demons when you don't know what they are.

Sadie and Gunner made an awesome couple, their journey to find love and happiness was a rocky one, and it took some twists and turns but, they learned to work through those demons enough to give love another chance. This couple had awesome chemistry, and we thought they were perfect for one another and that was proved with all those hot sexy scenes they had together as they could not keep their hands off one another.

The story was filled with suspense, drama, surprises and betrayals that made the plot interesting and one heck of a page turner. The story was also dark and dangerous, which led to solving a mystery that could ruin them all. Sadie was our favorite character, she grew emotionally throughout the entire story, and we were proud of all her accomplishments she was making to heal and to also find a sliver of her own happiness. From such a young age she really never had a life of her own as she was always a caregiver and protector and just a loving soul who made sacrifices for her family. So it was beautiful to see that she was full of smiles these days as Gunner made her happy, and it was awesome to see her spread her wings.

We have to say we loved it, and we can wait to see what happens next. There was some interesting stuff going on in this story which will probably spill over into the next one, so we can't wait to see what Sadie's brother is up to next, is he going to find his own damsel that will heal then darkness within him?

Gunner by H.J. Marshall is a steamy MC romance with a lot of drama, heartache and redemption. The story follows the lives of Gunner a man whose childhood and subsequent stint in the military has led him to be a part of the Death Hounds MC and Sadie, a young woman who has been through a traumatic event which has left her emotionally and mentally scarred. We follow their journey as the two characters lives become entwined, but it is not all sweet and rosy and there are some hard lessons for both of them along the way.

Gunner has to live with his past trauma as well as PTSD which does cause him to view relationships differently. There are times when he doesn’t treat Sadie the nicest and does things which may not be forgivable. Yet saying that, he is a likeable and redeemable character and knows that he has messed up. His love for Sadie could be seen as a little different as he learns about what she has been though and also the secrets and lies which have led not only the MC down a path of violence, but also his own path of violence and retribution.

Sadie is also a character dealing with her own trauma which can be seen throughout the whole book. But she also doesn’t suffer fools and won’t put up with the things that Ginner puts her through, and forgiveness is a long time coming. Her relationships with her brother and Uncle are both sweet and sad at the same time, but by the end of the book, she definitely comes out swinging and finds her own identity, which is a strong willed, determined woman!

This was a really good MC read, with a gritty storyline, a slow burn romance that burns white hot at points and is filled of violence, blood and redemption. It may not be for everyone and there could be triggers for other readers, so be warned!

ARC received for a fair, honest and sometimes long review. All opinions are my own. 😊

Sadie's incompetent mother had rather chase her next fix than care for her three children leaving Sadie to care for her brothers. With the help of her Uncle Mick they raised her infant brother, Jacob, and her older brother, Dalton, to make sure they had some stability in their life.  She bares the scars and nightmares that took away her innocence one dreadful night.
Jacob witnessed something no child should ever have to see. When history seems to repeat itself Sadie takes Jacob and rushes to the Death Hounds MC compound where she knows they will be safe since they helped her that dreadful night.
There was an instant attraction to Gunner. He swore to protect her and her family.
"Buried secrets from the past have risen from the ashes, not only affecting Sadie but threatening to tear the Gunner from inside out."
Then Gunner does the unthinkable.

"The demons that wreak havoc in his life makes him do stupid things."
As we all do sometimes.
A year apart Gunner returns with his tail between his legs vowing to win Sadie back.
When Uncle Mick passes away Gunner and Skid discover secrets that were buried involving the Prez Smokey and Bullet that horrible night. Betrayal. Now he and Skid have to tread lightly to gather more information otherwise it could be their own death.
Loss, fear, forgiveness, redemption, betrayal, heartbreak and unconditional love will keep you on the edge of your seat as Gunner and Skid unravel the mystery that lies within the Death Hounds MC. Do they choose their family or their brothers? What will be the consequences of their actions?
Mystery and suspense.
This book touched my heart and soul.

Kade’s childhood propelled him into joining the military to put his past behind him. When he has to come home, he really feels the loss of not having his brothers around. He walks into a bar and his new path is forged: he found the Death Hounds! He becomes friends with another Prospect and little does he know, another part of his future is about to be revealed.

Sadie has lived through so much emotionally and mentally. She had to be the responsible one in her family and when she experiences a severely traumatic event, she holds herself together the best way she knows how. When she meets Kade, their connection is instantaneous. A huge plot twist shakes up what you think you know and the new direction the story takes really showcases the character development for Sadie and for Kade.

There is no time limit for trauma and how it can affect a person because it affects everyone differently. It can paralyze you and cause doubt and anxiety. It can make breathing feel just about impossible when you can’t escape the fear it invokes. To read about these characters and their traumas and the ways they learn how to overcome them, makes this tragic and beautiful story incredible.

Learning how to help yourself heal is the biggest step. The process is never easy and can take weeks, months or even years but as long as you take it day by day and find something that makes you happy, your healing can begin.

Gunner is an amazing start to the Death Hounds MC and I can’t wait to see what H.J. has planned for them next.

Gunner wanted to get out of the place of his upbringing so instead of joining the ranks of the kids doing bad, he joined the military instead. He ended up having to go out on a medical discharge so he wasn't sure what to do next, and he was angry. He ends up becoming a member of the Death Hounds MC, and he knew he had found his place. Sadie was a girl who had to grow up too quickly because of a drug addicted mother who didn't care about her or her younger brothers, so she took on that role for them without complaint. It just so happened she had an uncle in the Death Hounds, and now her brother was a member so she was protected but maybe a little too late as something terrible happened to her. The moment she meets Gunner, she feels something for a man that she had never felt & he felt the same but he seriously messed it up & it was unforgivable to me so I wasn't a fan of his, especially with the excuse he made to himself. The rest of the book had twists coming in hot, and I still feel like things weren't resolved by the end of it because of a huge betrayal but that's just me. Please understand that this is only my opinion & not fact so decide for yourselves, especially given the fact that I normally would have stopped reading at his big mistake but I kept on and HIGHLY RECOMMEND!

This was a great start to the Death Hounds MC series. I can't wait for more!!

Kade "Gunner" joined the military to escape his past in the Flats and finds himself hurt and discharged only to return to the one place he thought he had put behind him. He finds himself in a biker bar and meets 2 bikers who offer him essentially a new family with the Death Houndsby becoming a prospect. Kade becomes best friends with Dalton "Skid" and eventually meets Sadie, Skids sister. They have an instant connection. Kade wants nothing more than to make Sadie his old lady almost instantly. Sadie is also from the Flats and has her own demons she is trying to bury. Apart they deal with their demons and become stronger, better versions of themselves. Together they are an unbreakable force to be reckoned with. There were many twists and turns that caught me by surprise and there were so many emotions going through my head while reading, but I'm excited for Dalton "Skids" book. There's no telling where his story will lead.

A recently discharged soldier with too many mental scars to count, set out to change his his life and conquer his emotional shadows when he stumbles upon a group of bikers. They take him in and they quickly become his new family of brothers.

The older sister of a his best buddy, Skid, is in desperate need of help. Gunner realizes he has strong feelings for this girl, and they are engulfing him quicker than any thing that has before.
As Kade (Gunner) gets deeper, and panic of hurting his love, Sadie sets in.
Will he get it right for Sadie or Will Kade mess things up?

This was an exciting story of life’s journey of love, trust and loyalty.
The emotions that tear us apart, need to be talked about and secrets that could destroy us.
This book had me fully absorbed with the characters and the story was full of excitement and fast action, some of it very dark.
A great book. I look forward to #2.

This is the 1st book in a new series and is Gunner and Sadie’s story. Gunner joined the military and his career sadly ended when he had an accident and coming home, he joins the Death Hounds which made him feel at home. Sadie is struggling to raise her younger brothers, and she is hiding the pain from her past, but when and incident forces her to flee, she approaches the MC for protection. The moment Gunner and Sadie meet there is an instant connection, but they are both weighed down by their demons, and their journey is a rocky one with challenges to overcome. Will these two be able to heal each other and move on together? This is a well written story which is an emotional roller coaster, with tragedy, secrets, twists, trust, family, undeniable chemistry, betrayal, and love, which leads to an intriguing and all-consuming page turner. I look forward to reading more from this talented author whose work I highly recommend.

Kade/Gunner and Sadie

This is my first time reading this author and let me just say that she did an amazing job with this story. Sadie was violated in the worse way at the age of fifteen by four evil pieces of scum. The club took care of three of them immediately, but Gunner and her brother Dalton learned years later that one was an ex ATF employee and was providing guns and drugs to the club. Gunner had a lot of issues resulting hot only from his time in the military, but also from his younger years growing up. Sadie, with the help of her Uncle Mick raised both of her younger brothers Dalton and Jacob. Sadie is also one of the strongest ladies that I've ever read and definitely has a strong backbone and work ethic. She's an awesome baker and loves to share her wonderful treats. Quite a few twist and turns throughout, but this is a well written story and I wholeheartedly recommend reading it. Happy reading.

This is my first book by this author. I will start out by saying this book did start a little slow, but when it picked up it PICKED UP!
Gunner is a broken soul in need of something. A chance meeting sets him up on the path to the MC. He finally finds what he has been searching for with in the Death Hounds MC. He meets Sadie who happens to be his best-friends sister. We he meets her he sees a kindred spirit. She has suffered a traumatic event and is trying to figure out her own life. These two together complete each other.
This book is a roller coaster of emotions as we learn about both of their past traumas. Can they learn to trust each other? Don't get me wrong mistakes will be made, question is can they overcome their pasts to get to a bright future they both deserve?
As in true MC fashion there are twists and turns that are thrown are way. You find yourself devouring this book wanting to see how everything plays out. Looking forward to the next book in the series.

Gunner

This is the very first book of H J Marshall I read, on recommendation of a friend. I have to say, I really like this, and have started following this author.
Having read countless MC books, I was captivated by the twists, turns and admittedly it's gritty darkness.
Gunner is a typical biker, had a bad past and poor coping mechanisms. The Death Hounds MC are his saving grace, however not without their own problems.
Sadie, a strong, independent but very damaged woman, fighting her way through life, trying to keep her family safe and together.
Put Sadie and Gunner in the same room, and electricity crackles between them, despite both of their issues.
I couldn't stop turning the pages, it kept me up til three A.M.

Oooof... there were some really hard parts to read in this book.

The things that Sadie had to endure, I would not wish on my worst enemy.

This book was tragic, heart-warming, beautiful, and sad. It was A LOT of things that I wasn't prepared for.
There is a lot to unpack in some places, some real emotional things to read through.
The attraction between Sadie and Kade, however, was evident from the moment they met.

Kade wasn't at all what I had expected when I went into this book. He was far more than I could have hoped for.
Yes, there were parts where I could have junk-punched him for his actions but overall, he was absolutely the perfect man for Sadie. And Bear, you have to love him!
He was an awesome addition to the story.

I am looking forward to reading more from this series, it's definitely going to be interesting.
