Detective Elwood Q. Chase has ninety-nine problems, and the unexpected revelation that his partner is a god is only one of them.
Chase has been in love with Benjamin Merrick for years and has resigned himself to a life of unrequited pining. But when they run afoul of a strange cult, Merrick’s secret identity as Gordoth the Untouched slips out… and so do Chase’s feelings. The timing can’t be helped, but now Merrick thinks Chase only cares about him because he’s a god.
Even more unfortunately, it turns out the cultists want to perform a ritual to end the world. Chase’s mission to convince Merrick his feelings predate any divine revelations takes a back seat to a case tangled with murder and lies, but Chase doesn’t give up. Once he finds out there’s a chance Merrick feels the same way, he digs in his heels. Suddenly he’s trying to court a god and save the world at the same time. What could possibly go wrong?
Another excellent addition to the Sucker for Love series.
I adore this series. The cast of characters that we get to meet and visit are always so much fun. Chase and Merrick are no exception.
Merrick is a god hiding in plain sight. Chase is in love with Merrick but feels he can never act on it. Merrick is also a stubborn, stubborn god, who thinks that he needs follow the rules and have no fraternization with Chase outside of the job. (Spoiler alert: there is some extra hot fraternization that takes place.)
While these two try to get their act together, they work a case that gets more and more complex as it goes on. The world building throughout this series is phenomenal. It is layered and intriguing. I just want to find out more and more.
Chase was funny and engaging, if a bit of a fatalist. Merrick was stubborn and straitlaced, but also adorable and devoted. Their personalities played beautifully off one another and their chemistry was smokin’ hot. I can’t wait for the next book.
I received an ARC of this book in exchange for an honest review.
"If you want me, I'm yours. That's kinda all there is to it."
Another fun addition to the Sucker For Love series and this time we get another member of Loch's family finding their mate in a mortal. Oh and this family member also happens to have their very own set of godly tentacles with which they can do numerous fun things with. I mean, we all know that is a major reason why you've made it this far in this hilarious series. Don't worry I won't tell 😉 You're in good company after all.
I was excited for Detective Chase to get his story and intrigued about Detective Merrick since we had little information about him and his godness. Merrick seemed a little tight by the book and stiff so it was fun having Chase unravel him. I also really loved how Merrick was so fond of Chase's curvy body. He's an overweight and likely overworked detective with stretch marks as a thank you, but to Merrick he was the most beautiful thing he'd ever seen. It was really sweet and I loved how it could make Chase blush and lose his self consciousness when Merrick complimented him.
It was also really funny how oblivious Merrick is for a god when it came to Chase's feelings for him. I would have thought Merrick would have been a bit more on the ball, especially with how brilliant he appeared to be at his job. Speaking of their job, it looks like the extremists are at it again with trying to wake old Sal. We get a cameo from our old favorites in Loch and Sloane, and even a dinner with the rest of the crazy crew once shenanigans have ensued and plans have been thwarted.
We also learn a bit more about Ollie. Remember Ted's ex from Kraken My Heart? That's Ollie and I really have a soft spot for the broken hearted man after this book. I hope he gets his own HEA with a god who can heal his heart. The poor man deserves it after everything. Here's hoping he's next or at least somewhere in line in this fun and laugh inducing series.
Frankly, I don't think this is for everyone, especially people who don't care for alien or tentacle sex. I never thought that I would be into these types of kinks themes, but I was so wrong. The things that titillate me now are wildly different than a few years ago.
I truly appreciate that this author has such an amazing imagination. I like the world-building, the mystery, and the different pantheons that have been created. I have discovered that my imagination is somewhat limited when the true bodies of the Gods are described. I have a hard time seeing the whole picture in my mind and get stuck on the details. Honestly, my mind broke at all of the different types of creatures in the 2nd book Kraken My Heart. That being said, it still thrills me that the author can imagine such an alien creature AND give such rich details.
The characters can be OTT but honestly, that's part of the fun. I loved that the MC, Chase, was far from the ideal body type, but Merrick/Gordoth truly loves it and I adore characters who are not built like models and are on the svelte side. All I am saying is that everyone deserves love and body-shaming has gotten out of hand. And of course, there's hot, hot tentasex, can't forget that! Anyway, the ongoing mystery and the events are culminating up to a big showdown, I am sure.
My heart broke for poor Ollie though. His story so far has been tragic and I want to wrap him up in a hug and not let anything hurt him again!
I can't wait for the next story and can't wait to see who is next...
And we have made it to the 4th installment of the tentacles and end of the world shenanigans series.
Spoilers ahead, like lots of them.
You've been warned.
So in here we have Chase and Merrick. We met them before in the series as they are the magic cops. Chase has had a thing for Merry (as he is called) for a long time. Then he finds out that Merry is a god, the uncle of Loch, the other god in this series. They bet together soon after.
I'm going to be honest, this was a very boring book. I did not really like either mc, but one must read this to get even more backstory about the overarching Sloan and Loch story.
Y'all know what happens, the cult of Merry's brother tries to wake him up and the Super Sage Club stops them.
I really had my heart broken over Chase's nephew Ollie. You see, he was the one who proposed to Tedward in book 2 and brought him back to life, but Ted did not know that and broke up and broke his heart. Ollie was too sweet for that. Due to this, Ollie literally lost a part of his heart and received the power to see the truth. He could see the real Loch when in a grocery store and when he flipped out, his uncle arrested him.
The next book is about the PI and god again, then I get the mgm (man, god, man) when Alexander and his god both fall for Ollie story. I can't wait.
What continues to impress me with this series is how much I enjoy the characters who AREN'T the original main ones we were introduced to in book 1, Sloane and Loch. I mean, I LOVE Sloane and Loch and every revisit to them, but Chase and Merrick were an equally fun and unique couple, because their dynamic is so different than what we've seen so far.
Without giving spoilers, there is a new god to meet who is not the type we've met before. There are still tentacles, there is still incredible chemistry, and can I just give some love for Chase and his not perfect or chiseled body? Like woot woot on Merrick being a gorgeous specimen - and a POC, something we don't see enough of, especially on covers - but Chase having some pudge and body issues and just... guh, I ate that right up and feel inspired to find more body adoration stories like this for less than perfect figures. So well done, so engaging, and hilarious as always.
I've loved this whole series (and the titles just get more and more clever) but I think this one is my favorite. The detective story and dangerous cult would have ensured I'd like it, but Merrick and Chase made this shine for me. Usually, we have the god pursuing a human but here we have a wonderful reversal of that. Merrick, the initially strait laced god gets it in his head that Chase only wants him because he's a god. Poor Chase has to work to convince him otherwise. Watching these two work on the case and their relationship was a real hoot.
4.5 Another highly detailed adventure, this time following Merrick and Chase though Sloane and Loch are involved. I love the world building, all the details and the different characters personalities. Merrick is very straightlaced. All about procedure but Chase makes him better. Cannot be read as a standalone or it wouldn't make sense. Pretty steamy but less so than the others, but this fits the characters. There's a real feeling of this building to something big and I'm really looking forward to the next one.
Another fantastic book in this very inventive and unique series! All the books in this series are packed with action, some gore, tentacle gods and other very adult elements. There is simply too much happening in this book to write about in the review, but it does have the ongoing theme of waking a mad god from his sleep who will end the world. Has great cameos with Sloane and Loch and other characters from the previous books. I highly recommend this book and series and will be patiently waiting for the next installment in this wonderfully tentacley series.
Apart from the Baby boy endearment, I really liked this one. Nice surprise to see it pop up, so read straight away. Oops. Realized I’d missed Loch’s second book. So spoilers for myself and I’d forgotten who Ted was. Felt sorry for Ollie, hoping there’s someone special lined up for him. More tentacles with plot. Looking forward to the next one. Gonna need to do a re-read first though.

Just when you think the Sucker for Love series can’t get any better, K.L Hiers brings out yet another amazing addition. The characters are fantastically written, and the story flows beautifully.I can’t wait for the next one!
I want a new blurb for this book : A love story, where Gordoth the Untouched became Gordoth the Touched. Oh and don't forget about the tencales, because hell yes, it has many, many tentacle scenes - oh my!!!
I am so in love with this series (probably because of the tentacles? LOL). This book was so good too and I enjoyed the hell out of it. I couldn't put it down and read it in one-go. Chase and Merry (awww😗), I loved them so much.
Chase is secretly in love with his partner and as it turns out, Merry is secretly wants Chase too! Oh gosh, and when they finally came together - SMOKING HOT - that what it was. A virgin God?! With tentacles, no less! Wow, I LOVED reading it. Every scene between these two was super amazing. Funny, tender and so hot. Just as it should be. Bonus point for the amazing tentacle sex and BJ scenes (oh my god, just shut up, how many times will I write tentacles down in this review?!...😂). Okay, but you get my point, right?
I loved that we got to see the other guys too (from the previous books) and I just can't wait how everything will turn out at the end.
It was full with suspense and some action, many funny and sweet scenes, oh and the hot ones too! Merry was a *slut* as Loch said 😉
If you're new to the series - WHAT the hell are you waiting for, go and read the first book! Especially if you love *tentacles* (okay, I'm done now).
Oh and my favorite part was definitely how Merry loved Chase's body while Chase wasn't okay with his belly being bigger than he liked. Merry aka the Untouched God was the best in this book, so sweet. Okay, Chase was really great too, he was funny. But together, they are the best together.
Every book in this series expands the cast of fantastic characters drawn into the “Super Secret Sage Society,” and the looming threat of the end of the universe aside, it’s great to see this weird, wonderful group of people (and deities) come together to fight the apocalypse. All this just goes to say, if you haven’t already, check out previous books in the series! They’re fantastic, and they help with context for the world and its inhabitants. This book is Merrick (really Gordoth the Untouched, god of justice and righteous wrath) and Chase’s story, and I absolutely adore them together. Chase is smart, irreverent, pragmatic, a bit of a slob, and he has a huge heart of pure gold-- you can’t not like him. Merrick is the stuffiest, most adorably uptight little rule follower ever gifted with cosmic powers, and he’s awesome. Their chemistry is great, but it’s their banter I really live for-- I would seriously read a whole series just devoted to them solving cases and exchanging digs. I liked how genuine their feelings for each other are, and how, once they get out of their own way (cough...Merrick...cough) they devote themselves, with tons of sincerity and sweetness, to making each other happy. So much sweetness, so many feelings... plus, you know, tentacles-- you’ll definitely want to give this book a try.
*I received an ARC of this book and am voluntarily leaving a review.
Who hasn't been madly in love with someone who had no idea? Well what happens when the guy you're mad about turns out to be a bad ass, ancient god? A whole lot of sexy fun, that's what!
K.L. Hiers blows my mind yet again with the next installment in the Sucker For Love Mysteries! Chase and Merrick are another fabulous pair that are pulled into the growing fight to keep the world safe. With every book this incredible world expands and I'm completely transported from my real life.
I am completely fascinated with the religion that Hiers has created, every new god we meet is fierce and refreshing and I'm in love with each of them. Especially in love with those tentacles 😍
I cannot get enough of those series and I am already on pins and needles waiting for the next book!
Okay, okay, okay, I know this book is Chase and Merrick's, but I have to show my love to the original couple, they shine even in a book that's not theirs! Chase and Merrick were perfect for each other even if it was unexpected in a good surprise way. We got a brief glimpse of them before hand and they shattered any and all expectations. As a God I never expected him to be so uptight and set in his ways, that is what I expected from Chase so it was pleasant to see that KL Heirs can still surprise us. I am so invested in this series and cannot wait for it all to play out. The plot woven within each story that connects them has me rereading these books again and again, anxious for more!
I want so much more. This was just as amazing as the last three and waiting for the next one is going to hurt. Chase and merrick were awesome and I can't wait to see them more in the next book.I really want something good to happen for Ollie though. Hopefully in the next book he can get his own HEA. love this series. And I REALLY love this author!
KL Hiers is one of my absolute favorite authors and this book is an excellent example of why. Chase and Merrick are so perfect together - sexy, sweet and so wonderful. All of the characters are rich and complex with genuine emotion you can feel coming off the page. Excellent book that has come from a brilliant and creative mind! (And, hello, tentacles!)
Absolutely love this series. All the matchups are super fun with a lot of humor. Merrick and Chase partnership finally gets to be more...a lot of fun banter...fun HOT sexy times...we get our action mixed in to keep it interesting but most of all with this series we get TENTACLES!!..LOL I hope Kat keeps on keeping with this series...its a gem:)
The sheer number of I love you's being uttered while in bed was staggering.
I also somehow sadly don't see Chase and Merrick together. What do they actually have in common other than loving justice? And I'm sorry, lying on your ass being handed a beer and burping before turning over and giving your partner a kiss in bed is just ... no...
Chase in general felt so... I wouldn't say uneducated per se but ... vulgar, crude and uncultured.
That is why the two just didn't mesh for me. Chase needn't be rich or thin or a graduate of Harvard, but come on... sniffing your underwear, trash lying all around the apartment? Just gross.
On the plus side, Chase made Merrick laugh and it was actually one of his fav things to do, to see him smile, even if not for me how he went about it.
Also, how Merrick loved, for whatever reason, Chase for himself, overweight, stretchmarks, aging, crudeness, burping and all. Merrick made Chase want to be better, to do better. To do some actual cleaning and changing the bed sheets once in a blue moon, but also to cook and sit and just enjoy each other's company.
I swear this series gets better every time I read the next book. And I'm very anxious to see what's happening next because this one had a touch of the cliffhanger going on and I'm hoping Ollie is going to get what he needs very soon. I laughed so hard in this book. I love the way the author has these gods and goddesses so down right hilarious. With Merrick not even having a clue at times because his sense of sarcasm is off or something, it's hilarious. And Chase, of course, loves adding fuel to the fire. Well, the idiots are of a different sort…..a bit. Still same stupidity at what they are doing, but it gets closer to home in this one. I felt so bad for Chase. Truly. Looking back on all that time that he could have been there and the tons of what ifs. Of course at the time he didn't know of Gorgath & Az, etc, but he could have supported him anyway. Heck, I'd probably be drunk most of my days, if that's what I saw every day as well. Especially when you not quite sure how it all began…..to a point. Well, you may know but the reality is so much different. Between Ollie and Chase, and with them being family torn apart, it's heartbreaking because you can see they still love each other but how do you say I'm sorry and make amends. And Merrick, the poor guy. He's just in love with Chase as Chase is with him but his situation isn't easy either. And with the idiot morons determined to end the world, it kind of makes it hard to explain things until it's way too late. This one was just wrought with so much. Action, emotion, of course tentacle sex, and so much more that it's a book you can't put down. And if you haven't read this series, you need to get on it. It's funny and lighthearted but serious and emotional at the same time. There's just so much. It's a great series and another great book I strongly recommend
Tropes: age gap, law enforcement, men in uniform, size difference, mystery, cult, first time, unrequited love finally requited, interracial romance, puns, co-workers, resistance is futile, messy x neat freak, stickler x freewheeler, clueless mc, larger MC
This was such a fun book. There's two cops, one of whom is actually an old god in disguise. I've liked Chase since his first appearance in the series, but I was not prepared for how much I'd learn to love Merrick (aka Merry). The story of various Sages and gods trying to wake Salgumel continues, with a cultist group trying a new way to wake him - by sacrificing a child of starlight. While Chase and Merry investigate, we meet Oleander, who is Chase's nephew. He's got some amazing powers and helps them. But he's also - more interestingly - Ted's ex! Ollie is the one who resurrected him! What I loved about Chase and Merry the most was how mature and sensible they can be. They have some mature, very real conversations about consent, preferences, and when it's appropriate to have sex! Unless the rest of the books, these two can keep it in their pants long enough to do their job. I love how clueless Merry is about everything except being a cop. It's very endearing.
Favourite Quote: "I love you so much it's downright squidiculous." "Was that...." Merrick snorted. "Did you just...?" "Make an amazing pun? I conch believe you have to ask." Merrick laughed. "Oh, that is even worse!" "Come on. We both know what a sucker you are for'em." Chase was delighted by the way Merrick was laughing now, and he had to keep going. "Seeing as how you're currently octopying my bed, I wanna make sure you stay for a while." "Ah, and you think this is working?" "I know it is. Out of all the places in the whole wide tunaverse, this is exactly where you want to be."
I still really like this series. It is not a story to take seriously and it is basically sex scenes with a few breaks for story.
My issue with this particular book is that I believe it contains the only Black main character in the series (I am through book 8 so far), but the Black person actually died and a god took over his body and is walking around in it throughout the story. He is the only main character who is taken over by a god that we never actually meet in the series.
All other characters in the story who are taken over by gods are either resurrected and given separate bodies or consent to be vessels for a finite time. There is a Black woman who is consensually taken over by a god who dies between books, but we don't really hear about her at all. I feel like it would have been a stronger story if the places of the two main characters were switched or there was more character diversity in general. Because there is only one non-white main character the issues really stand out.

In the fourth installment of the Sucker for Love series, Hiers manages to capture the reader’s heart with the ultimate fantasy: mystery, danger, passion, and a lover with multiple ways to please. But it is the author’s overall messages of acceptance and love that have me gravitating toward her novels time and time again; it is okay to be who you are, as you are, and true love always prevails.
I highly recommend reading the first three books in the series before picking up this book as Hiers has created a fantastical world of new planets, new creatures, and an astonishingly impressive theology. This book answers some pretty major questions left from the previous books while also indicating an epic “we’re going to need a bigger boat” culmination to the series.
Love the collection so far and Nautilus doesn’t disappoint. Happy to add Chase and Merrick to my growing list of favorite pairings!
This is another exciting addition to the Sucker for Love Mysteries series. Seems like there's still no rest for the tentacled gods and their friends, as there's another threat to the world, only this time it's Chase and Merrick's turn to save the day.
Chase and Merrick together are a lot of fun to read. They're polar opposites and both such delightful characters. Their interactions lighten up the story, which is a lot more gore-y than the previous ones in the series.
Nautilus than Perfect is thrilling and kept me intwined and interested in what is going to happen next. It's fast paced and action filled, as Chase, Merrick and their friends try to eliminate the new threat to the world, while the two protagonists own up to their feelings and finally start a relationship.
I couldn't put the book down and I can't wait for the next one in the series to come out.
Yet again, this book was very cute and sweet! Chase and Merrick were both completely clueless to eachothers feelings about one another, but once the secret is out the sparks sure do fly! They bring in characters from previous books to help solve the mystery of this book, which is always fun seeing their interactions!
I really liked that Chase and Merrick each had body issues but the other helped them overcome their insecurities. It's not often I read books where the main character is not super ripped, buff, hot, etc and that definitely made for a nice change of pace in this book!
I also had two of my questions from previous books answered, and one not in the way that I thought it would be answered! This is of course a HFN overall with a continuing ARC overall, and I am excited to continue the story!
Mr. Grumpy Color within the lines Benjamin Merrick has a secret but then so does his partner Detective Elwood Chase As truths come to light, emotions are exposed and evil comes calling things get extremely complicated for our crime duo
These two were so much fun to spend time with Chase had me rolling with his quirky comebacks, his jaded views, foul mouth and sheer determination Benjamin was a stick in the mud who seriously needed a chill pill and it turns out Chase was the perfect size to swallow (couldn't resist!)
Tighten those seatbelts this is one is an action-filled twisty wild ride From murder and mayhem to missed communications this has it all Let us not forget the godly tentacle resuscitation and salvation
Want more! Now! Plot: Omg, with each book in this series, K.L. Hiers builds and builds upon her wonderful world of magic and gods to a grander and more fantastic plane. I’m absolutely loving all the crazy magical things! Feels: Love the cute banter between Chase and Merrick, the indescribable feeling when Chase looks upon his found family Drama: Not really Heat: 3/5; more fun than steam - Potent healing seed! ROFL! Characters: This one brings together a lot of the characters from the previous three books, so a reread is highly advised ;) Pacing: Fast Length: Want more! Now! Ending: HEA for the couple, ends with the start of a new mystery, continuing the series storyline
Seems like everyone wants the old gods to wake up and destroy the world. The coven that's been moving to perform the ritual to waking Salgumel is growing heads like a hydra. Chop off one, and two more grow back. This time we join Elwood Chase, Detective, and his partner Benjamin Merrick superstar Detective and also the host body of Gordoth the Untouched. Prepare for rampant cursing and wet tentacle penetration that'll make you wonder what life choices you made incorrectly. We do get introduced to Chase's nephew Oleander in this book and his introduction does answer some lose ends from the second book. He's a surprisingly powerful/weak character and I hope at some point he gets his own book.
This follows the adventures of Detective Chase and Detective Merrick as they hunt down cult members. The story was good. I did like the dynamic between Chase (all casual, slobby, and swears like a truck driver) and Merrick (prim, proper, all things by the book, and tentacled of course). It was like Oscar and Felix from the odd couple fall in love. But that's just it. While I liked the characters individually. I simply couldn't see them as a couple. At all. I tried. I really did. But the romantic part of the relationship didn't work for me. I'm still giving it 4 stars for the story. Even though the relationship part seemed more like a 2.
Loved it!! It was a fantastic action-packed story. Chase has feelings for his partner Merrick who’s actually a god. Merrick thinks that Chase is only wants him because he’s a god. It was fun watching them work their case and finding their way thru a possible relationship. Merrick was such a stickler for the rules. This was really well written, highly recommend! I’m voluntarily reviewing from an advanced copy that I received. My reviews are solely based on my thoughts and opinions.
4.5 stars. This book showed a lot of promise but ultimately I don't think had much to set it apart from the other books in this series. Chase and Merrick were a cute couple, but once they actually got together they got a little bit boring.
The story expands on previous stories, but it has become clear that - even when full length books - the story isn't going to show much progression unless it's in Sloane and Loch's books.
