My exact thoughts after finishing this book: What… did I just waste my time reading?
Um… where do I even start?
This book is told from Lotus, Robin, and an anonymous stalker’s POV. At first, the perspective changes were confusing and I had a difficult time following along. It wasn’t until page 34 that I realized the black pages were the anonymous stalker’s POV. Page 66 was when I realized Summer wasn’t a person, but just the season 😂😂 I’m not sure if I’m stupid or if others struggled with that too.
Spot, the hunting dog, was probably the only likable character in the book. Each person had horrendous flaws that left me feeling annoyed with each flip of a page. Lotus was taken advantage of, Nova was a whiny brat, Vin… I have no words, Robin needs to grow the fuck up, and wtf was Reid’s character development??? Honestly, poor Karen— the only real victim in this book… well, besides the reader.
I wanted to DNF after the first page, but my mother didn’t raise a quitter. The writing style and structure of this book feels like a 6th grader wrote this story. The writing was so bland and chaotic that I struggled following along. Fast pacing and perspective changes created a jumbled mess.
— Let me put a disclaimer: I recognize this book has been translated into English which might be the reason why the writing feels so off.
However, after page 50, I started to really enjoy the book, despite the mediocre writing. From pages 51-190ish, the story picked up, and I found myself intrigued enough to see what was going to happen.

All for the climax to never happen??? Nova was somehow the victim which then justified bullying Robin. A grown ass adult decided to USE her son and physically assault/mentally abuse MINORS all because she was too weak minded from their pig bullying. Sure, that’s messed up, but reprimand them OR tell administration. Throwing Reid into the climax added nothing substantial to the development of the story besides learning that men ain’t shit. Seriously? He’s such a narcissistic predator who should be jailed. Yikes.
Robin let them go. She fucking let them go. I’m sorry, but if I were to go through that much effort for revenge on some mean girls, I’d at least kill them???

So… you’re telling me that I read 212 pages worth of nothing just so you could throw away a potentially fire climax all for the sake of some philosophical bullshit? All the characters sucked.
Don’t even get me started on pages 200-212. Completely ruined what was possibly a salvageable 2.5-3 star read.

I like the idea of the book, but once you find out who it is the “Stranger Danger” title doesn’t make any sense. I was expecting horror or a little more thriller, but I was disappointed. The twist was the only thing that gave this story the .5. I had so much expectations for this book, it sounded so good, but it lacked in delivery.
The whole reason for them to start studying the kids was just not it for me. I think both sides of the coin were the victim and the perpetrator. Also the characters weren’t really described, I don’t know if that was to add mystery or something I’m sure the other had a good reason though. Maybe she was thinking along the lines of the reader being able to put themselves into the story since there was so little descriptive details.

This was a super quick young adult read focused on 3 teens who are being threatened while staying in a remote farmhouse to study for exams. Lotus, Nova, and Vin are alone in the woods when they start receiving threats from someone who is clearly watching them. You also get alternating chapters told from earlier on the school year that provide some insight into who the villain is and why they are doing this.
I liked the atmospheric vibe of the teens being alone in the woods, though I couldn’t help thinking about what parents would let their kids do that (maybe I am just old ;)). I also couldn’t really figure out why the book was called “Stranger Danger” when they almost immediately figured out who the “bad guy” was. I thought the author did an amazing job of leading the reader to believe something and then introducing something different that made even more sense but caused you to shift your thinking. I was tricked multiple times, culminating in a huge twist at the end that I didn’t even begin to see coming.
Overall, a quick and fun YA read that I’d recommend to those who like the “isolated cabin in the woods” vibe. Thanks to Netgalley for providing me with a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

Sorry it just felt like one of those cheap scholastic fair horror books. It wasn’t scary. Nothing really happened. The twists and plot was overall very confusing. I really have no clue what I just read. Waste of time

Op deze 31 oktober kon ik niet anders dan een spannend boek uit de kast pakken, en bij wie kan je dan het beste zijn? Juist, Maren Stoffels natuurlijk. Met boeken als Fright Night, Escape Room en Room Service had ze mij namelijk al eens in haar greep, dus dat kon dit keer niet anders zijn. Toch?
Nou, tot op zekere hoogte niet nee. Dit boek is misschien qua sfeer en verhaallijn iets minder 'eng' maar dit boek gooit hoge ogen met zijn wendingen. Serieus, mijn mond viel misschien wel vier tot vijf keer open door een wending die Maren erin gooide. Tel hierbij de fijne luchtige schrijfstijl, een lekkere dosis drama en een boodschap en je hebt weer een fijn pakketje aan leesvoer!

A remote cabin, three best friends, and no cell phones, sounds like the perfect peaceful place to study for exams. Right? Surely nothing could go wrong. Except, for Lotus, Nova, and Vin, someone starts to stalk the cabin and make the cabin experience a real life nightmare. From bikes getting tires slashed, mysterious texts from the stalker, and even a foot getting stuck in a bear trap, there’s a lot happening. The three must think fast about who would want to put them through this, and most importantly why.
It’s a short and sweet book, that makes for a very thrilling and quick read. Definitely creepy with a lot of crazy twists and turns that you will not see coming. It’s a unique theme, that holds your interest the whole time. It’s a rollercoaster of build up of thrilling things and it delivers with a bang. Definitely worth a quick read if you plan to pick it up!
I will say, the main themes involve bullying specifically fat shaming. A lot of the bullying involves being called piggy and some pretty mean stuff relating to weight and pigs. And although it isn’t outright said, there is mention of an eating disorder where one of the characters doesn’t eat nearly as much as she should. Another one is that one of the characters is having an affair with her teacher. So she’s sleeping with him in his classroom, which obviously teacher/student relationships aren’t okay. So if you have any issues against either of those two, they could potentially be a trigger warning. Keep that in mind!
Could have been five stars, but I think that all the lead up, even though it ends with a shocking twist is still kind of a cop out. Like all this happens, there’s so many twists and turns, and then it’s just like oh well the twists happened. Ending was a tad bit of a let down, but still good! Just felt like the twist wasn’t enough in my opinion. And I knocked it cause the teacher student relationship is always weird in my opinion, not that it isn’t well wrote but still just not my favorite thing to read. These are just my opinions, I did struggle between 4/5 stars. It is a good read and very well wrote. Like I said, definitely worth a chance!

That was the most anticlimactic ending of a book ever. It seemed as if the author had no real end planned but had to make a deadline. I ended up spending most of the book confused due to how it was written and hating every single character besides the dog.

This book contradicts itself. I thought they weren't allowed to bring phones so they won't be distracted. Seems like almost everyone had a phone.
Who peer pressures someone into getting naked in front of people when they clearly don't want to. How awkward. Plus isn't there a couple there.
I love how Lotus is being sexually abused by her teacher but her friend is more focused on that she didn't tell her and not in the caring worried for her way but more because she had a secret. Lotus' friends are not good people.
Once the plot of Lotus being abused by her teacher is revealed it has so many red flags. I seriously cringed when her friend asked how he kissed and everything. I know teens can be dumb but there is no way I'd turn a blind eye on my friend being abused and taken advantage of by her teacher. Author writes about this like it's some kind of hot plot when really this girl is scared and taking the blame for if her teacher will be mad at her. It was gross to read.
Then people are being attacked and rather than stay in the house and protect themselves they go along like everything is normal. They walk off alone outside. Just laughing and smiling.
Pretty simple and no frills ya suspense.

Basic. Didn't hate it but it wasn't good at all.

Honestly the end did not really shock me or make me go 'OHHHH' and I like that in the books I read so this was a no for me. I am more inclined to give this book a 2 but I like the name Lotus so I'll give it a 3.

Holy shit. This was incredible.
TW include pretty horrendous bullying but it’s not between who you think.
This is an excellent depiction of people who casually say things they think are helpful that end up ruining a life. The bullying cycle is fucking vicious. Nobody wins.
This is not a feel good book but it’s POWERFUL.
I loved it.
Be kind. Words matter. Bullies suck and I hope they stub toes. ❤️

The main characters are insufferable. Couldn’t stand them.
The only thing that saved this book from a one star review was the twist at the end. Did NOT expect that. I feel like it should have been played out a little more.

I did not see that ending coming 😳

The bullying.. I had so many emotions as this all unfolded. I can see points to both sides so this was intense!

Thinking of reading this? Absolutely ignore the title and cover art - this book should be called “Who’s Next” or something actually related to the story! There is not really a horror aspect to this novel.
This story follows 3 teens who are trying to get away to study without distraction for their final exams. Lotus, Vin, and Nova. What they end up learning is (most of) each other’s secrets and OH what a small world it is!
Super quick and interesting read! The main theme is bullying over weight so can be triggering, but otherwise it was fun trying to figure out the plot twists!

I was sold on giving this book 2 stars untill the final twist I so didn’t see it coming and thought that the motive behind everything was not justified and just wierd and I wasn’t rly connected to the characters and the plot was subpar. It still kept me entertained and wanting to know what was gonna happen next so I’m rating it 2.5 ⭐️

I did not know the ending twist until very late in this read, but I did catch onto it in the last 20ish pages. So that gets credit from me that it took long to figure it out. This was an okay read and I would read again.

If you’re looking for a fun YA who Dunnit this is a pretty decent one. Although it leans heavily on the tropes this genre typically sports, I feel it’s still worth reading if this is your thing. It’s not a super long book and it’s written In a fast pace style with differing POV of 2 characters. While I did feel that the story lacked something, I don’t know what, I still enjoyed it and it made for a good read while eating.

First of all, I love the dedication. It’s so sweet. I love Maren Stoffels’ books. This was a fun and quick YA mystery. It reminded me of 90s teen books like ones by Christopher Pike. I thought it was a really interesting plot and different from her other books. The topic is definitely a heavy subject and there’s a lot to unravel with it. I loved the dialogue and thought the characters had layers, even if some weren’t likable.
I would recommend this to anyone who enjoys fast paced teen mysteries!

Told in perspectives from Lotus, and an anonymous stalker, this book held my attention immediately. Lotus was hiding a secret, and I thought I knew what the secret was, but I was completely wrong. Nova annoyed me to no end. I just felt she was very bratty, her attitude flipped at the drop of a hat, and everyone walked on egg shells around her. This was a very quick read, only being 212 pages. I wanted to know if the stalker was who the gang of teens thought it was, and I was pleasantly surprised with the reveal. These characters were not as innocent as they seemed. Maren Stoffels packed a tense, and creepy atmosphere in just a few hundred pages. The isolated setting, with no cell phones, and no transportation really had me questioning how these characters would get out of this situation. Overall, I enjoyed this quick, tension filled tale.

I was expecting something COMPLETELY different from this book lol If you love Goosebumps or Fear Street books by RL Stine, I think you’ll enjoy books by Maren Stoffels.
This book had dual POVs and oh man the twist at the end, I didn’t seem coming! I will say… one of the POVs is actually super super confusing. There’s really no way to explain it other than just reading it for yourself.

If you like quick, entertaining YA thrillers featuring teenagers who have behaved badly and/or being slowly tormented by an unknown adversary, this is a fun one. This is my first time reading a Dutch author and I will check out some of her other work. I looked her up and found at she published her first work at age 17. That is impressive.

DNF. Seemed like a highschooler wrote this. Perspective changes were off and hard to tell based on voices. Thought summer was a person (maybe a me issue). A literal line from this book: “her eyes were as green as the self scanner at the supermarket”.
I gave up around page 50, maybe it gets better 🤷♀️ but wasn’t invested enough in the plot to struggle through the writing

Wow! Wat hou ik van de boeken van Maren Stoffels! Die enorme cliffhangers altijd: I love it!! Wat geweldig zeg!! Ik zou het liefst nu het boek nog een keer willen lezen met in mijn hoofd alle informatie hoe het verhaal in elkaar zit. Maar eerst maar eens bijkomen van deze meesterlijke plottwist.

This is my 3rd book from Maren Stoffels and so far it was my favorite. Great YA horror/thriller. Perfect for teens or anyone wanting to start out in the genre. All her books jump right into it. No slow burn here. Start to finish…Stoffels will grab your attention and never let go.
