‘Language is a bridge to the world’
Each chapter has a travel- or language-related epitaph. Nothing encapsulates them like this one by the late Dr. Seuss:
‘Oh, the places you'll go!’
The author and I share a love for foreign languages that begin at a very early age. I still have a very vivid memory of hearing a Spanish speaker at a rally then breathlessly trying to describe it to my grandmother on the phone (just HAD to call her as soon as we got home).
Unfortunately, some neurological issues prevent my brain from correctly processing what my ears hear (even in my native language), so my attempts through the decades at Spanish, French, German, and Hebrew have been in vain.
Having been around tons of polyglots, I can totally appreciate the author’s stories. I won’t waste your time with telling some of mine – get this book for some good chuckles!
The learning of languages benefits us in so many ways. It improves our brain’s function & ability to focus; it teaches us that there are many ways to phrase what we wish to convey. We learn about foods that may never have otherwise entered our sphere of experience; we discover how other peoples think & therefore (hopefully) better understand their cultures.
This book is a keeper.

April 3, 2022As I wrote this book, I laughed out loud! I couldn't help but vividly remember the stories, the scenes, and adventures! My hope is that you can travel the world through my family's experiences and realize that learning languages and cultures can be tons of fun! I also wanted to entertain you, so if you get some good laughs and even a bellyache, then I have accomplished my goal. This books makes some good bathroom reading. Enjoy! :)

Even though many of us haven't been able to travel much due to the pandemic, you can live and laugh vicariously through Marci's hilarious stories of their adventures in language learning. Even though it can be scary at times, this book will make you want to get back out there, learn a new language, and have some bloopers of your own!

Wonderful humor, great stories
Best non-fiction book I have read in the last year! Anyone who has ever tried to learn a foreign language would love this book.
