⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️...❀⋆.ೃ࿔* FORTUNE FALLS °❀⋆.ೃ࿔* Is the first full length YA (Fortune Falls) series by new to me author Lou Vane.

This has been on my iPad for ages, so after seeing this pop up a time or two on fb, and getting recommended this book/series numerous times and nothing else really holding my attention, I jumped right in..

This pulled me in quickly, even though it’s YA it didn’t really feel like it, the characters were so easy to relate to, having to rely on complete strangers for survival and the bonds they formed up in the mountains and the experiences they went through had me racing through the pages and chapters. It's fast paced, and kept me entertained throughout. I liked seeing it from the teenagers perepective, usually this genre I've tended to read it from an adults POV, so this was kind of refreshing. They had to learn from scratch the skills needed to survive. No adults to lean on. Only a group of misfit teens. And keeping within the YA reign there's barely any romance. Though there is a romantic connection. It doesn't go beyond hand holding and kissing.

She has a strong connection with Matt, who she met on the plane. But then further along in the story she grows close to Ethan one of the camp leaders.

I liked Jess, just a normal typical teenager but when she’s faced with life changing decisions she takes charge and does what others won’t. And then throw in the fearless boys in the group Matt, Ethan and Dean who had her back throughout was such an enjoyable read. I loved these characters. Just sad that one is missing in this tight crew. So they have to navigate around grief whilst trying to defend their sanctuary.

Then reading about the author and finding out she’s a kiwi author, (New Zealander) made this book even more special..

I’m off to start the next book. So life is on hold a wee bit longer… 65451226-2019570151487824-6157464638251335680-n

This book kept popping up on my FYP page on tiktok so I finally decided to give it a chance and I’m so glad that I did!! I loved this book and can’t wait to read the second one whenever I can get ahold of it. I couldn’t put this book down it was good. I will admit I was hoping for a little bit more Romance going on, but I still loved the book!!

Overall I really enjoyed this book!

Pros:

-I liked that the characters all worked together to have the best chance of survival.

-There wasn’t a lot of petty drama that you can sometimes find in YA books.

-The writing was very easy and quick to read

-I was easily able to picture everything described in the book.

-There were real stakes involved. Survival depended on the decisions of the characters.

Cons:

-I felt like a chunk of the first part of the book was unnecessary and I just wanted to get to the action.

-I am personally not a fan of love triangles, so I did not enjoy that aspect.

4 stars for all the moments where shit is going down. 2 stars for the teen character interactions and the overuse of the word cringe really bothered me.

“It’s better to do something wrong for the right reasons than nothing for the wrong ones.”

Okay wow! I really didn’t know what I was expecting when I started this, but I really loved this book and I’m heavily looking forward to reading the rest of the series!!!

This book did definitely start off slow in the beginning action-wise, but I appreciated how it focused on building the bonds and relationships between characters! It developed their personalities and allowed us as readers to connect with them!

I enjoyed the ominous setting throughout the book. We were as clueless as the characters were to what was going on in society.

I’m so happy there wasn’t any unnecessary petty drama…especially with there being a love triangle. Everyone seemed quite practical and mature when it came to planning and decision making! Very realistic!

Oh man now the love triangle talk! As much as I just hate love triangles, I will eat it up every single time, no matter how angry I’ll be after the final decision. I adore Ethan. I adore Matt. They’re extremely different and have very opposing morals!

Jess is a baddie and I was never annoyed by her actions. I also love Dean. He’s a real one! Poor heckin Priya!

Before I judge anything, you should know that this is the first novel Lou Vane ever wrote. And well, you can see that. Mainly because some parts are just bad writing or lacking details.

That said, the head character kind of sucks. I mean, there is an apocalypse happening, and I think she mentions her parents 3 times total. The thoughts about family and friends (not knowing if they're okay or even alive) always get pushed away. She doesn't really have time to miss them, and how could she, she's busy in a love triangle. There are excuses for not thinking about them, like ✨hormones✨. Speaking of the love triangle, it really feels like a Wattpad story sometimes. Just an ordinary girl with two guys falling in love with her, and ofc she doesn't understand what they see in her. And yes, she is interested in both, and yes, she dates both of them.

I did like some things in this book. I do like the main story line. The idea is great, it's just some characters that suck. But like I said, it's her first novel. The way she describes places is very clear. I really have a picture in my mind. The story took an interesting turn at the end. I will read book two, since a lot of people say that it's better than the first book.

Unfortunately, I also went into this book thinking it would be Zombie Apocalypse vibes. I was very disappointed.

There was not enough personality for each character. So I lost track of who was who and who was interested in what, and they all just meshed together. I never really fell in love with any of them and wasn’t affected by any deaths.

There was a TON of explaining that could’ve been cut out. I skimmed pages sometimes because it just took so long to get into the essential keys of the story.

I can see how the author tried to introduce all the characters by spending the first half with them being themselves ig, but it wasn’t done very well. It didn’t keep my attention very well.
I figured that perhaps it was just meant for a younger audience, but honestly, “the kissing scenes” I would NOT put in front of a younger audience.

I couldn’t relate to the Main Character at all. I know that’s on me, though, because I have never been a fan of romance-centered books. I would’ve liked someone more considerate of the guys she was messing with. Sometimes, the best choice is to not make one at all. The love triangle was too much.

SPOILER:
That ending was infuriating. They’re all considerate about surviving and even kept the murderers alive. Until Jess reasonably shoots one. Suddenly it doesn’t matter and we’re going to kick out our friend who has been through so much for and with us already- let’s kick her out to survive a month in the winter in the wild on her own…?????

It was stupid and felt WAY too forced. I reckon it’s an excellent start for the next book, but their actions did NOT align with who I thought they were as characters.

Im sorry. It just didn’t make sense. And Matt needs to man up otherwise he doesn’t even deserve another chance. If the girl you love, her life is in danger of another man, you should be on your girls side and willing to keep her safe. How could you ever end up living with a guy yknow won’t try to protect you at the cost of a murderer and rapist?
There’s a reason why Capital Punishment exists. You’re actually being even more inconsiderate of life than caring for it when you’re willing to let someone who willingly murders people for his benefit and pleasure live. Jess killed him bc she had an idea of this. She understood that letting him live was going to mean that he was going to kill more people. Her friends included. She cared about their lives. Sarge didn’t. Seriously, cut Matt out of this love triangle and add Dean as replacement.
Gah. Girl, cut your losses with both of them already. Ethan is a player anyway. Just be friends with Dean and forget everyone else. Obviously they’re not trustworthy and your life doesn’t mean anything to them.

There is very little positive to say about this book. The overall premise sounded promising, deadly virus, camp full of teens, what’s not to love?

What is this virus? How is it transmitted? Why is it such a big killer? By the end of this book I still have no idea and none of the characters are asking. In fact there’s a lot that they’re not asking, like “are our families ok?”

There is very little about the actions/behaviours/choices of the characters that feels believable and they’re so two dimensional that there’s no emotional impact when one of them bites the dust.

Throw in a love triangle with no spark and a female lead whom has all the charisma of a wet paper bag. Safe to say I will not be tuning in to see what happens to Jess and co.

+ extra points for apocalyptic setting

First quarter-ish of the book I wasn't super feeling the character interactions, but so glad I plowed on. Once the action started, I was hooked!

DNF: 32% – 2023 – 3⭐

I felt SO conflicted about what I wanted to rate this book. The beginning was 2 stars for me and the ending was 4 stars, so I settled on a 3 star rating. The premise was so good. SO GOOD. This book had the potential that so many books do not have. But the execution… was not there. It just wasn’t. So let’s talk about some of the problems that I had with the book:

1. The dialogue made me actively cringe the whole book. There were so many lines that felt fake and forced or just took away from the plot itself.

2. We are in an apocalypse and all our main girl can do is vacillate back and forth between men like a seesaw. The entire middle section felt more like a romcom and nothing like a book where teenagers are fighting for their lives.

3. Speaking of fighting for their lives… I feel like the book actually had almost nothing to do with the plot, if that makes sense. The whole book is allegedly about how a virus sweeps the world and everything falls apart. But they mentioned the virus only a handful of times. They never met anybody with the virus. They never had to worry about the virus, basically. And that feels weird in a book that is supposedly about a *virus.* Idk, it just felt wayyyyy off to me. Like, don’t make that a crucial plot point if you aren’t going to include it in the plot.

4. The ending confused me. I think if somebody say me down and held a gun to my head and asked me to restate what happened in the last ten pages, I probably wouldn’t be able to tell you.

5. They can’t reach the government, hospitals, or army on their radio but they can reach some random chick for a few minutes?

6. When somebody is having a panic attack and is struggling to bring oxygen into their lungs, possibly the LAST THING you should ever do is kiss them. But apparently in this book making out with somebody and blocking the airway they are trying to suck air through stops panic attacks instantly. Everybody, make a note.

To sum it up, I was disappointed. This book had so much potential as a fresh take on a YA dystopian novel. But it was lacking in substance, and everything towards the end jumbled together in a confusing rush.

TDLR: Underwhelmed and confused.

3.5 stars. Sigh. I wanted to like this, I really did. I love apocalypse stuff, and I was really sold on the premise I saw on Tiktok about a group of teens working together to survive. And those aspects were good, it was just... 1) There was a LOT of teenager romance stuff, to a level that just irritated me, 2) throw in an unnecessary love triangle and you only make it worse and 3) I was a bit frustrated by just how predictable it was. More than books usually are for me. Also I really did not enjoy the end.

It wasn't a bad read, and you'll probably like it way more than me, if you enjoy teenage romance and relationship drama. Idk if I am going to read the next one. I kinda want to know what happens but I don't think I can endure the love triangle much longer.

After putting this off for FAR TOO LONG I can finally say I have read this book and in typical fashion… why didn’t I read this earlier.

This was amazing! I love a good end of the world, young adults trying to survive without knowing what’s going on in the world dystopian! Tomorrow when the war began is one of my all time faves and this just hit that nail on the head!

I can see already threads of plot starting to form to lead us into the rest of the series, we have a great variety of characters from all walks of life, and a love triangle verging on the line of … awkward! lol

The author touches on how regular people can sometimes change dramatically in different situations, and do what needs to be done, how situations like this can really affect mental health and coping through traumatic situations.

I can’t wait to see where this one goes in the next book.

From the first chapter I was hooked. Fortune Falls is a terrific dystopian novel full of strong characters, rich dialogue and the perfect amount of suspense. It is so well written I was surprised to learn it was a debut by the novelist. I look forward to reading the second book of this series and whatever comes next from the talented Lou Vane!

My first post-apocalyptic book which I honestly loved!! The first 30% is a lonngggg introduction which at first I was like (get to the action) but I find that it connects me to the characters which makes it hurt more when shit happens 🥲

When I first noticed that it was from the perspective of a 17 year old I thought that it might be too PG for my liking but I must say that it exceeded my expectations! I was up until 3am last night finishing this book and moved straight onto the second book.

The love triangle is so complicated & I feel for both the male characters 🥺 tbh I’d have trouble deciding as well tho, they’re both so cute in their own way.

Otherwise I honestly enjoyed this read & am keen on the rest of the series 🥰

Was a little slow in the beginning, I felt like it was taking a while to get going but from about 50% onwards I was invested. I’ve not read anything like this before, really enjoyed it. Gave me Yellow Jackets vibes but without the plane crash or cannibalism. Finished on a bit of a cliffhanger so I’ll definitely be reading the next one.

⭐️ 2.5 I really liked the idea of the story about a deadly virus and a group of teenagers who has to survive.
It gave me Maze runner vibes.
Unfortunately i couldn’t bond with the characters and the dialogue was a bit cringe.
I was waiting for action and at 70% there was some good action which i liked!

Whoa! This book is amazing. I saw ads for it on Instagram and just kept putting off reading it. I’m so happy I decided to read it. Thank you Kindle Unlimited. I absolutely love the character development. And the story moves so well. So many twists and turns it really feels like a game of Chutes and Ladders. I cannot wait to read Book 2.

I started reading it with excitement because I love post-apocalyptic books. I finished being really disappointed.
The dialogues felt really weird, as if: oh yes this is how young people talk nowadays. The romance felt unrealistic - they have the end of the world and the main character is going from one guy to another in a span of the day.
I liked the premise. Young people having to learn everything about survival to keep themselves alive. But I feel like they learned everything too fast. I remember that the chapters from hunting were especially weird for me. I can’t imagine being able to just skin a dead rabbit. Yet the characters were okay with that.
Also the whole predictability of the book. I figured out that the character were learning something / mentioning something and then it would happen like a chapter later. It would be nice to let the reader to forget about some things so they can be surprised when it happens.
