After two years of living together, Troy had the whole Thanksgiving celebration weekend down to an art. Work over time to get the two days off –spend the first day with his lover Derek’s family and the next day is just for them – and of course to remember to act like they were only friend in front of the family. However when he arrived home and saw Derek already at home, he knew in his gut that this Thanksgiving was not going to go as planned.
Derek has long lived his life to please his family – his father to be exact. When he just had enough of the bad mouth and expectations from his father, he confirms that Troy is not his roommate but his lover. Things get worse than he had expected and he is left to make the best of the celebration with the man he love.
GIVING THANKS is all that you would imagine the Thanksgiving holidays should be about. A book full of; secrets, family expectation, love and surprises along with a whole lot of forgiveness.
Derek and Troy are perfect for each other, there is no pretence about the love that they feel for each other and the respect that they have for their family. In wanting to have it all, family, friends and each other they make decisions based on assumptions and almost lose sight of things that are important to them.
The book has not only that hold your breath moment when you think, ‘please let it work out’ but also some hilarious moment where you just have to say thank God for the in-laws. I really enjoy Ms. Anderson’s GIVING THANKS.

May 14, 2009Troy and Derek are lovers since two years and they also share an home full of joy and comfort. They would be the perfect happy couple if not for the fact that Derek is not out with his family and this means that, at every family reunion, Troy has to play the role of the "roommate" with Derek's family. But Troy loves Derek and he would do everything for him, and so he is approaching once again the Thanksgiving festivity with the same good disposition as before.
But this year something changes: it's Derek that can't bear no more to listen to his father complains on his private life and how he undervalued Troy's role in Derek's life; so he snapped the day before Thanksgiving, and since he also works in the family's restaurant, he finds himself at the same time without family and work. But Derek wants to give the best Thanksgiving to Troy, and so we read of all the preparations to have a huge Turkey and everything else around only for two.
I like the story: it's nice and tender. Troy and Derek, despite Derek's reluctance to come out, are a very communicating and supporting couple; Troy never once makes Derek feel wrong for not presenting him as lover to his family, and never once let Derek without his support, even when Derek is stubbornly invading the kitchen with an huge amount of food they can't possibly eat in two. On the other hand Derek is very comprehensive of Troy's work, and how it's very tiring for his lover, and so he tenderly takes care of him in the best way possible: even when he is suffering for his father's reject, he still finds time to take care of his lover and to be always open and "straight" to their relationship. Derek doesn't hide to suffer alone, he shares his pain with a gentle smile on his face.
The story is not very long, 51 pages, but it's a very nice fast reading in the warm atmosphere of the holiday season.

Although this was a short book Ms Anderson managed to pack it full of wonderful characters who dealt with a surprising revelation in differing yet believable ways. I really liked both Troy and Derek and the family member's that come for dinner were a wonderful addition to the book. The ultimate resolution to the book was, I thought, handled quite well and the epilogue was the icing to the sweet love story. A truly enjoyable book.

Had to take a half star off since at one point the mc's names were switched and it threw me out of the story so much that I had to go back and check who was who again.

Overall
It was a cute read for right before Thanksgiving. Not sure I would go for it any other time. An ending fitting for the season with caring characters that love one another. A good story about family coming together.
While it didn't blow me away, it wasn't awful either. I think the worst part was that sometimes the author switched the names of the characters, which is a pet peeve of mine (one should know when one's chef is the one who shouldn't be saying he's a klutz in the kitchen).

Ok Thanksgiving m/m romance about a couple dealing with the after effects of one of them coming out to his family and getting punched by his dad. This is also part of the Hot Comfort collection.

This was a sweet little holiday tale about coming about, homophobia, acceptance and forgiveness. It could have made a more angsty novel, but for the length and purpose it was a nice feel-good story. Gets me in the mood as we move into fall.
