Sun, sand, and ghosts. Sounds like the perfect working vacation, no? The supernatural cruise would be a chance to get a tan, enjoy a variety of cold drinks with colorful umbrellas, and make some money leading ghost tours along the Mid-Atlantic coast…or so I thought. I didn’t count on a seasick hellhound Chihuahua, a stowaway ghost, and a crazy cult cramping my style. Now I’m fighting Octonomicron acolytes, trying to keep myself in one piece, and save humanity at the same time. Oh, and that tan? So not happening.
When the costs of home repairs get too steep, a necromancer reluctantly signs on as one of the VIPs for a paranormal cruise. Naturally, her reluctant Chihuahua hellhound’s reluctance leads to a severe case of ‘I Told You So’ when things go to the devil. Ani Gonzalez’s paranormal world drew me in from the beginning and I have devoured each book since. I was excited when she started writing this exciting urban fantasy spin-off of her fun cozies.
Dead Man’s Hex is the second of the Drop Dead Witchy series and could be read out of order in a pinch though works better when the reader, at the least, started with the first in series. Personally, I think the best bet is to get all the Banshee Creek series so the background and regular characters who crossover make better sense.
It has been a few years since the last release and I was a tad hazy on events from the last book, but I took the gamble and dove in hoping memory would kick back in since I remember loving it. It worked out great because the author took the time to recap the events from the last book and fed the reader enough along the way that it started coming back for me. The current story led a little time after the events of the last book when Claire is trying to settle back into her ancestral home with squid inter-dimensional monster and all. Claire, her first crush Cole the Ghost and the Paranormal investigation team at PRoVE are on the lookout for Octonomicron cult sightings either in the present or something they left from the past knowing they only tackled the tip of the tentacle in the last book.
I liked the banter between Claire and Pookie her hellhound sidekick and I enjoyed the backdrop of historical ghost settings and sightings sprinkled liberally throughout the story. The cruise boat setting offered a colorful, eccentric group of characters that almost made up for the crazy kookiness of the PRoVE team led by Caine- okay, in the end, they more than made up for Caine being off page.
I enjoyed how things built slowly until it was edge of my seat excitement. Claire was meant to be a guest presenter and celebrity guest on the cruise and she was joined by others in their paranormal entertainment and investigation community. The fangroups were fun and I enjoyed the antics that went on woven with the serious paranormal mystery stuff. I figured out about half of what was going on early, but that did not dim my enjoyment of the series and neither did the lack of progress/resolution when it comes to Claire and Cole- though, with him as a ghost, I guess that is a bit tough.
All in all, it was an abso-fab entry in the series and left things in a good place with hints toward even bigger stuff to come. Those who enjoy a cozier style of urban fantasy with a plethora of quirky-fun characters led by Claire and my fav, Pookie.
I rec’d an eARC from Lola’s Tours to read in exchange for an honest review.
Dead Man’s Hex is the second book in the Drop Dead Witchy series, and it’s been a while since I read the first. Due to this, it took me a while to get into this one. Once the pieces started to come together, however, I found myself powering through the story.
Dead Man’s Hex was an enjoyable quick read, one I happily devoured in no time. With plenty of entertaining moments, and moving parts that kept me intrigued, I was eager to see how the story would come together. I’ll be honest and say that the ending felt a little too easy, which had me rounding my rating up, but I did enjoy the journey. It added plenty to the world I enjoyed in the first book, and my fingers are crossed more stories will follow the characters deeper into the supernatural mystery.
All in all, Dead Man’s Hex is well worth the read if you enjoyed the first book in the series. It’s a quick and addictive read that certainly has you turning the pages.
Claire is in desperate need of some moolah! The only family home is falling down around her ears, oh and trying to contain a demonic dimensional thigummie. A short meet-and-greet cruise with some Paranormal fans should be a quick injection of cash, right. Ummmm, more like Mysery Inc and Scooby on steroids!
Pookie is not best pleased with being upstaged, even if it by an eight-armed Octonomicron from another dimension! Add in some well-camoflaged fellow supernaturals and their entourages and some misplaced humans. Sprinkle in some stowaway Banshee Creek residents and it's like most of BC has come away with Claire and Pookie!
Plenty of madcap hokum and snorty laughs. Banish your pandemic problems for an hour or so and slip into Banshee Creek road trip Bedlam!
Hellhounds and water don't mix? I beg to differ. The second in the Drop Dead Witchy series doesn't disappoint, continuing the fast-paced, intriguing thrill ride that began in Hex Marks the Spot. Different types of paranormals are coming out of the woodwork in this book, and it's fun to see what powers each of them brings to the table in the battle against all thing evil and squid-like. As usual, Ani Gonzalez has crafted a well-written book, with plenty of twists and turns and tense moments for Claire to navigate. The complexity of the underlying storyline of good versus evil continues to deepen, making the reader anxious to return to Banshee Creek, and the next instalment.
We must fear the things that are offered to us, and they seem wonderful. That was verified by Claire Delacourt. On a paranormal cruise, in the middle of a terrible mystery, with her powers diminished from her and looking like she was playing 'Guess Who', the eyes of others were on her to save the situation. Interesting, intriguing and at the same time funny story with a great variety of paranormal characters, ghost stories and a plot development that kept me intrigued all the time. The ending suggests that there is more to come so it looks like we will have more answers in the future.
You know sometimes you're just in the mood for something funny, entertaining, maybe with a bit of mystery but most important...easy to read when you just can't think anymore. This is the perfect book for those times. It was entertaining with a variety of interesting/funny characters with a paranormal twist. My favorite character is the chihuahua/hellhound side kick. Ships and water are a fear for me so this was something I could relate to when things start getting choppy. Enough said! Fun, easy and good for all ages.
I read this book straight after finishing book one - Hex Marks The Spot - and I am glad that I only started reading the series now as a 3 year gap between books is ridiculous! I really hope there isn't another huge gap between this book and the next as I'm really enjoying the world Gonzalez has created here alongside the mad cast of characters.
Unlike book one, this book doesn't take place in Banshee Creek, it takes place on a cruise ship with stops at various spooky locations along the way. Being locked on a cruise with a bunch of supernatural types and their superfans sounds like a recipe for disaster but needs must when you have an old money sink of a house to renovate! Naturally, chaos ensues and a bad guy must be stopped!
The ending leaves a lot hanging but it's not a cliff hanger... It's just the series plot that's left flapping in the wind. Not to mention the romance/not romance between Claire and her ghostly beau. Honestly... The series is fun, easy to read and I love Claire's hellhound but I don't know if it's enough to make me come back for more if book three is another few years away... Top shell UF it isn't. It's a fun filler kind of UF and that's fine but you need to keep it coming for that to work.
Pet peeve? Grammatical errors. The story moved along at a good clip and Pookie's snark was still on point, but it is a little frustrating when there are extra words in a sentence. The first book had them too.
Claire's latest adventure takes her on a cruise ship with other supernaturals. What she doesn't expect is the danger that follows. When Cole is involved, things are definitely going to get complicated and someone, most likely her, is going to get hurt. Fighting giant squids while trying to save friends isn't easy.
Clair needed money to make repairs on her family home. She saw an invitation in her email. That she was ignoring. Danny invited her to come aboard a cruise ship and be a paranormal performer.
She got bad vibes about the minors and people that were chosen to come along.
Loved this episode of the Drop Dead Witchy !!! Now, who is the Dad Man that’s hexed????? Lots of possibilities as a cruise ship full of supernaturals takes off for scary places with scary people—-will Claire make it back alive? Will she make enough money to pay the bills?? Read on to find out!
The Banshee Creek Stories are some of my favorite light hearted fluff reading. They have deep characters, an enchanting world, and (semi)realistic issues and responses.
