It’s so nice to see a book that connects children to a set of ideas they can live by and continue to explore throughout their lives.

Kindness is king for Mogo! The teachings of yoga help Mogo in more ways than one in this fun and creative book!
I really liked how the teachings of yoga helped Mogo find his true kind self. This is a great book for kids to read. The creative story incorporates yoga poses and teachings while being colorful and fun for kids. I love the characters and simple story that every child can relate to.

Behind Mogo’s Mask (Patanjali Place: Adventures in Yoga Philosophy Book )1
Written by Kim Stevenson © 2021
Illustrated by Isabel Arnaud © 2021
Ages 4 - 8
Genre: Children, Educational
Bookmarkers: 5 of 5
Mogo, the lion, was born different. Tired of being laughed at and bullied he changes himself and together with his accompanying roar, becomes much more imposing. Aggressive, he then starts to take what he wants. Making friends proves difficult.
One day he crashes a party where he creates a ruckus and destroys everything around him. Guests, except for Finn, a turtle, run away.
Turtle’s fearless approach to the lion disarms him so much that Mogo follows Finn to Patanjali Place and agrees to stay a few days to help care for the place! But for an angry lion used to doing what he wanted, being patient and helpful were new to him. The two animals have a heart-to-heart talk. It is here that Mogo the lion, king of the jungle, is introduced to ahimsa or non-harming. A little of yoga philosophy is shared as we witness these two characters doing yoga.
Misunderstandings continue to create problems with Mogo’s behavior until fate intervenes.
The story told, the last few pages of the book give details on yoga.
Beautiful drawings highlight a powerful message for children and adults alike. The message is made all the more palatable by the visuals such as the fashionable clothing given to the female animals. The detailed clothing and accouterments the female squirrel has on page 32 adds depth to the characters and storyline. Little details make the illustrations come alive like on page 8 where we have a southwestern-style blanket with a pitcher of water on top and various items about.
Even though yoga is not typically considered a children’s topic this book works. The subject is approached and presented from an age-appropriate perspective. Several sections rhyme. This writing style creates a nice change to the story’s flow.
This book is worth reading not only for children but also for adults unfamiliar with the philosophy behind yoga.
Interesting, educational and it’s attractive to view, I would recommend this book.
