Slippery Times

From the publisher:

EDMUND LOVENIGHT would much rather party in Soho with the Dalai Lama than actually, you know, work. But when a dead cabbie named REG shows up with a message from the world’s most cantankerous matron-of-arms, Lovenight embarks on a mission to rescue all of existence from a renegade archetype. Together with a stoned film student and a surly talking pug named ‘Noodles’, can Lovenight and Reg save the universe? Or will they muck it up? And will Lovenight ever get back to that swinging party in Soho?

Slippery Times is cross-dimensional romp, packed with irreverence, glee, and several new and innovative cuss-words. Sci-fi farce at its best!

Nicholas de Kruyff takes readers on a wild ride in his debut novel, Slippery Times. The author shares his untamed imagination by creating zany characters, mind-bending settings and an action-filled plot. The humor is expertly executed so the reader should be prepared to laugh out loud while exclaiming, "What? Are you kidding me?"

The novel follows a traditional theme: a reluctant hero embarks on a journey to save the world from the clutches of an evil villain and learns about himself and his place in the world. But everything else about the book is far from traditional. The action shifts back and forth between the real world and the unreal world with swaying, kaleidoscope-like settings described so vividly the reader could develop motion sickness.

The author is a genius at creating multidimensional characters that are quirky and endearing. The story is narrated by the lovable protagonist Edmund Lovenight, who embarks on a journey to save the world from the clutches of the evil Baroness Zamora. His friend, a dead cabbie named Reg, stays by his side, even if it means he must be disassembled and shoved in a suitcase to make it through Customs at the Toronto airport. But Reg will magically reassemble himself thanks to the laws of "Necro-quantum mechanics." The author makes up fictional scientific terms that sound so real I found myself trying to look them up on Google.

Edmund has help on his journey while trying to save the world from an "egocentric despot with nearly inexhaustible resources and wealth." He's assisted by his boss Lady Montique, a 124-year-old grumpy retirement home resident, as well as Noodles the foul-mouthed pug, and three pot-smoking college boys from Michigan, who accidentally stumble into the unreal world.

Slippery Times is a highly entertaining, light-hearted story that sends the reader into the world of imagination and humor. It's a perfect escape from today's reality.

A wild, funny and crazy ride!

If you put Douglas Adams, Terry Pratchett, Charles Stross, Michael Moorcock and David Wong in a giant blender and turned it to "puree", what would you get? Hopefully, you'd get arrested, because that's just horrifying.

But Slippery Times definitely reminded me of these authors as it rollicks its way through space, time and other dimensions.

It's been awhile since I legitimately laughed out loud while reading a book. Highly recommended.
