The Ascendancy of the Nerd

Rate this book
Dive, wade or simply belly flop your way through our world’s unplanned journey in which nerds have been busily (though mostly inadvertently) inheriting the earth, while the rest of us have been lost in our smartphones, glued to our computer/TV screens, or were ordering a pizza and binging on Netflix.

In this hilarious account, we discover how the ascent of nerds, and their mesmerizing technology, have completely redefined society, thereby affecting every facet of our lives including:
• How we interact – OMG, do not call me or stop by, I’ll text you
• How we work – Virtually all the time
• What we eat – Why the snack aisle in the grocery store is the world’s most popular travel destination
• How we dress – Why our sense of fashion has been sadly diagnosed to be in Stage IV
• What news we consume – Look here, I told you I was right
• And speaking of sports – Why national team sports are headed to the penalty box, forever

Explore how our highly stressed lives and natural world are perilously close to a collapse not seen since the Trojans remodeled their public square with a fetching horse. and then discover what may, indeed, be our unexpected saving grace.

Mister Victor

2 books3 followers
Mister Victor began writing his bio in utero, and plans on working on it until his death. Born with the name Victor Bjorge, he picked up his pen name when he was interning as an elementary school teacher. The children in his classroom simply decided that it was much better name for him because it rhymed, and it didn’t involve pesky unexpected arrangements of consonants in his last name.

After teaching, and finishing up college in poli sci and journalism, he has been experiencing a long and chronic career in the technology sector, ground zero for nerds.

Currently, living in New York, he is teaching a master class in writing to his pet hamster, Luís, who’s very eager, but has real concentration issues, and is currently being evaluated for ADHD (Attention Deficit Hamster Deportment).

Who—or what—is a nerd? Distinguishing traits? How could you spot one in the wild? With Nerds Gone Wild, Mister Victor tries to answer all these questions.

This was an interesting and fun book. It held some surprising information for me and was humorous. If you love a nerd, I think you will enjoy this.

* It did take me awhile to read but that had more to do with timing than the writing. The fall is when I can get caught up in holiday books from Halloween to Christmas so please don’t look at the time I took to read it and judge it.

I don't usually read non fiction books, they are not my go to genre so I thought I I give this a go. I liked the premise of the book it sounded like it would be a humorous take on the world we live in.

I found the writing style quirky and I enjoyed his sarcastic humour. It was definitely my type of humour and I laughed aloud a few times. There just wasn't enough of it for me! The topics were interesting and I liked the journey from the very beginning to how these things are now presented. For example the fashion of the cavemen through to now.

I found the writing style quite heavy and I felt I needed to really concentrate to follow his ideas. If my brain wandered off I struggled to get back into the text.

On the whole I liked it but I didn't fully love it. It wasn't as light hearted and quirky as I had thought it would be. I think I will return to it another time when my head is not so full of other things and give it another go.

I consider myself a bit of a "nerd". I have always been fascinated by technology and credit this to my Dad. My Dad spent most of his career working with computers. He was not on the programming side but more of the technical side by building them and fixing them. I helped to build a computer when I was younger. This in turn got me to earn an Associates degree in Electronic Computer Engineering.

So, you could say that I was very intrigued to read this book. While, I liked it I did not love it as much as I had thought I would. The author does a nice job of breaking down each specific topic and explaining what we started with and how we as a society has progressed. Which you can see how technology has changed things like sporting events. It used to be that unless you were an athlete or a fan that the engagement was not that high and especially with nerds. Yet, with today's technology, everyone can be a fan with "fantasy" sports.

Overall, I did think this was an interesting read. However, I just was looking for more geeky references and I missed the humor some as I hardly laughed.

The cover and title of this book really drew my attention, the hilarious intro grabbed me. Informative, funny, unique, makes you think.

Our world as is now is past paced and full of technology. In a funny and informative way, nerds gone wild explains how nerds are involved in this and are rising to take over the world.

‘The ascendency of nerd culture is a game changer.’

Lots of normal, daily stuff has been influenced by technology and has changed radically during the past generations. Do you know the history of office spaces or sports, and how they have changed? There are lots of different subjects featured in this book. All broken down and explained, from start to nowadays.
‘Meetings often involve uncontrolled outbreaks of death by PowerPoint.‘

The quote above is one of many I really loved. Some parts of the book really made me chuckle. I also learned a lot and read some stuff to think about. I liked the book, although sadly not as much as I thought it would, some of the history parts were harder for me to keep my focus on. Nevertheless, it is well written and I’d recommend it.

If you consider yourself a true “nerd” then this is the book for you. Filled with a lot of information, anecdotes, comparisons & history it really takes you back. I was the professed nerd in my family with my Dad putting me in front of a computer at a young age & I witnessed it’s evolution fro@ the beginning to what it is now & boy gave times changed. Mr Victor takes a deep dive into all if this so if you are indeed a nerd it think you are one 😏 you've got to pic this one up.

Humorous and Informative

This was a Goodreads giveaway win. Contains trivia and some photographs and other illustrations. Ironically contains a fair amount of spelling and other errors. I recommend it.

The Ascendancy of The Nerd

Since I am the author of the book, I'll leave the reviews to others,.......but here is a bit of a trailer:

A historical, tragic-comedy commentary, with a bit of horror thrown in. Explore the absurdly fast rise and dominance of The Nerd at this moment in time when the fate of humankind hangs in the balance.

A sample "chapter" of the book, can be found on TheMisterVictor.com....along with other writing stuff.
