The new London office of Benson Security hasn't even opened its doors yet and already it's neck deep in its first case...
If the mission doesn't kill him, his sexy partner just might.
Dimitri Raast and Megan Donaldson have a common enemy - the head of an organisation that specializes in human trafficking and sexual slavery. They have similar motivation - Dimitri's sister was taken by the organisation, and Megan's sister is threatened by it. They have the same goal - eliminate their enemy and save their sisters. Given they have so much in common, you would think working together would be a piece of cake.
You would be wrong.
While Dimitri brings skills and experience from years as a US Army Ranger to their partnership, Megan brings a background in failed career choices and an ability to cause trouble wherever she goes. Yet, even with so much at stake, Dimitri can't resist Megan's particular brand of crazy. She's wild, she's sexy and she's fearless. An irresistible combination for a man who lives his life completely in control. Now, after almost a year with one all-consuming focus, Dimitri finds himself torn between rescuing his sister and protecting the woman he wants - from herself.
Janet grew up in Scotland but now lives in New Zealand. Among other things, she’s been an artist, a teacher, a security guard at a castle, a magazine editor, and a cleaner in a drop in center for drug addicts (NOT the best job!). When she isn’t living in her head and writing about the people she finds there, she raises two kids, one husband, and several random animals. She survives on chocolate and caffeine.

Megan's stomach rumbled again. Loudly. This wasn't good. So much for not making a sound. She closed her eyes, tried to calm her stomach and think thoughts that made her invisible. That's when she farted. It wasn't silent. Megan dropped her head to her knees. If the bad guys didn't get her, she'd die of humiliation.
'Do I get a poison dart pen and camera shoe?' She really hoped she did. So far being a gun-for-hire did not live up to the hype.
The two old men were dressed in white y-front underpants with white vests tucked into them. They still wore brown socks and brown loafers. They looked like the scrawny chickens you found hanging in windows in Chinatown... The brothers at least had the decency to look embarrassed. 'We were fighting.' Bill pointed at the two long poles on the mat. 'Ninja style.'
It's no wonder he's taken to a life of crime. There can't be many career options open to you when you're called Fritz.
His head was shaved bald and tattooed with Nazi symbols. Very attractive - not. His smile was a leer that oozed toxic waste.
Does this mean you're starting a women-only part of the operation? Like Charlie's Angels? Will you be Bosley?
My Review:
Reckless was my first Janet Elizabeth Henderson read and I ardently adored her sense of humor. I enjoyed her amusing style so keenly; I sought out her Facebook page and giggled at her posts. Romantic suspense is not my typical genre as I am far too lazy to follow the complex schemes and action, but this one had been billed as comedic - so I hopped on. While I did get lost a few times in the complicated underpinnings of the crimes, various organizations, and the detailed tactical planning on bringing them down - I state again - I'm lazy - Ms. Henderson's quirky characters and their clever rapid-fire banter kept me more than interested. A budding romance and a few steamy sensual scenes were also well served and kept me invested in the story - hmm, funny how that always seems to work.
Dimitri Raast and Megan Donaldson find themselves both working at the new London office of Benson Security when a common enemy brings them together. Dimitri's sister has been taken by the organisation and Megan's sister is in danger from the same people. The pair have immediately chemistry but Megan has a way of infuriating Dimitri and getting under his skin.
Reckless is one of those reads that combines the genres in a really fun fashion. The book is a mix of a romantic comedy with the way the main couple teases each other and some rather hilarious situations that they get into. But this was also a high intensity action packed thriller as the investigation progresses with a dark subject matter of what was happening with these girls when they were taken.
I rather enjoyed all the characters in this read, they were all rather different but brought together. Megan has some pretty good one liners and a personality that was just funny as can be. There were also a few side characters that their actions had me cracking up laughing. Dimitri was also a sexy male lead that could steam up the pages.
Overall, a fun read with mixing a romantic comedy and action packed thriller.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
DNF. It’s a good thing i didn’t start the series with this book…. Humor in a story is fine by me,but that girl rubbed me the wrong way. I understand other people enjoyed it,but i’m giving up. Maybe Rage will give me more of what i want?
Reckless was the first book in the Benson Security series by Janet Elizabeth Henderson. It was also my first book by the author.
Megan and Dimitri met through a common project. Megan was captured while Dimitri was working undercover. The sparks flew from the onset.
Reckless was written with multiple POV’s, the main characters as well as a secondary player, Julia, the extreme introvert who was the Agency’s office manager. It was well written and suspenseful. The relationship development was secondary to the plot of taking down an organization that captured and sold women as sex slaves. It wasn’t unpredictable but it was action packed, detailed and fairly quick moving.
All in all, it was enjoyable and entertaining. It also set the stage for the series and teasing us with Julia and Joe’s story in Relentless and I can’t wait.
It was definitely fun to read it. Janet Elizabeth Henderson can write funny scenes and witty banters. She delivers enjoyable and hilarious stories.
One has to only forget or forgive or just ignore the unreality of them. I honestly hope that the security firms don't work like shown in the novel. Moreover, Megan's behaviour was so stupid and (yeah) reckless it was beyond... I don't even know beyond what. I am not going to tell what she did because it would be a rather bigger spoil, but believe me it was too stupid to forgive it as a step to her maturing. And when near the end an officer of the police force said she will "cover-up" about something if someone goes with her on a date - did only I see it as corruptibility?
So, in a way, it was a fairy-tale action story about fighting bad guys (and I hadn't enough time to be annoyed by it because I had a fun time ;-) )
I really enjoyed a couple other books by this author in the Invertary series - contemporary romance. This is the first book in the Benson’s Boys series - more suspense than the Invertary books.
I was not happy with plot development.
There was a good scene in the beginning where two guys kidnap Megan. She manages to get loose. Then the author jumps to a future time and doesn’t finish that scene. It’s briefly referred to later. I was disappointed. I wanted to see the scene. I was also disappointed because that was the scene where Dimitri and Megan met. I wanted to see some dialogue between them - to see conversation as Megan learns Dimitri was under cover and not a bad guy - to see them start being drawn to each other. There was no transition. It was skipped over. He’s a bad guy kidnapping her, the next thing you know they are coworkers planning a job.
The characters and the romance kept my interest. Sex scenes were ok.
My favorite parts were about shy Julia who would hide behind plants and under her desk.
I received an ARC as part the author’s random drawing giveaway. Thank you.
DATA: Narrative mode: 3rd person. Story length: 260 pages. Swearing language: strong but rarely used. Sexual language: moderate. Number of sex scenes: two. Setting: current day mostly London plus Scotland and Morocco. Copyright: 2016. Genre: romantic suspense.
When I finished reading this I tweeted: Loved it from start to finish - what an enthralling, suspense filled romance yet with plenty of laugh out loud moments! Superb!! I think that sums it up for me :) OK, no, I won't leave my review quite that brief but you get what I mean . . .
This is an action packed adventure written with complex characters, suspense filled scenarios, danger round every corner, romances reluctantly developing and a very humorous, laugh out loud thread running throughout it. It deals with the very serious matter of the abduction and enslavement of young women and the efforts to discover and recover one such woman, by her brother, Dimitri and to prevent the revenge capture of the wife of the man who helped free another such victim. When the wife's twin sister, Megan, is taken by mistake she is thrust into the midst of the adventure.
I had never read anything by this author before but she had me totally absorbed into the story and giggling away with some of the brilliant dialogue exchanges. There's a total range of characters, from the feisty, stubborn and independent Megan who is determined to prove she can protect herself and save her sister to the shy, hiding behind the plants or under the desk, Julia who still manages to make quips to keep the alpha males focussed on the tasks in hand and is superb at organising everything . . . and the men - domineering, sometimes chauvinistic but always protective but again each with their own quirks. One highly memorable scene in this is when trying to hide from the baddies, Megan finds she has a very upset digestive system after eating a Chinese meal and her body inadvertently reveals her hiding place in a very loud and odorous manner!
I've got to assume the next book in this series will be about Julia and Joe's mission to rescue her Gran from prison in Peru - and I can't wait to read it! I thoroughly enjoyed this story and really want to read any sequels to see how things develop for them all in future!
I was gifted a copy of this novel in exchange for this, my honest review.
An action meets rom com hybrid that works at all levels, this book is highly recommended. I think it pays to read Here Comes the Rainne Again before you read this one, so you know where it's coming from. I'm in awe of how Henderson takes the very serious and heartbreaking subject of sexual trafficking and slavery and puts it into a story with humor and romance without ever triviliazing things. She plays to all of our emotions perfectly in this book, and it's great. Megan is a fabulous heroine, desperate to be the tough girl but totally in over her head. Dmitri is a fun hero, so clearly needing to get his sister back and yet not willing to lose the woman he's learned to love while doing it. The side characters are fabulous, and it's a great spinoff of the Invertary series. If you like badass heroines and heroes saving the world with a smile on their face, this is the book for you.
I received this book from NetGalley and Barclay Publishing for an honest review.
I really enjoyed Megan’s character. She knew her worth and didn’t back down one bit. She was one of the most realistic characters I've read recently. Or, maybe it was the way the author put some very realistic scenes in the story. One of the funniest and embarrassing things that can happen to a person happened to Megan. Embarrassing for the person, but usually everyone gets a laugh out loud response to farting at a very inappropriate time. The storyline was good, but in places it dragged for me. It seemed like it took forever to get to the rescue. Also, it was great to see all the characters that I’m sure will lead to their own stories, but a couple of them just seemed too over the top. But, if Julia gets her own book her weird shyness may be very funny.
This book was laugh out loud funny! I absolutely enjoyed the entirety of it. Shared clips with friends who now can’t wait to read it. It’s a great branch off while still seeing original characters. Love it
I’ve been through a chunk of Henderson’s books lately, appreciating the quirky humor, characters that are just fractionally over the top, with humor and heart that is apparent in every connection. Now she’s moved some of her characters to London as Lake Benson’s security business is expanding and growing. Starting with a failed kidnapping attempt in which Megan, the wrong twin, was grabbed and extricated herself through sheer luck and bravado, the current mission is to shut down a sex-slaver’s business.
Megan is Claire’s twin: fiercely loyal and protective, and at a bit of loose ends. She’s burned through several different jobs, nothing has stuck, and now she is in London at the Benson Securities offices. She wants to help, but her impetuous nature and bravado, despite having very good intentions, are needing controlling.
Dmitri is a former military man, now allied with Benson security in the search for his sister Grabbed a year ago by their current target, her trail has run cold. Assimilating himself into the team and tasked with managing Megan, he’s singularly focused on finding his sister. Their target is ruthless, deadly and quick moving, and the necessity of bringing his entire operation to a halt, not just grab him, is a master-class in interagency cooperation and patience.
Dmitri and Megan’s connection is electric, while he goes all alpha she’s fighting the attraction and connection, especially when she is feeling constrained. They are supremely well-suited as he balances her impulsiveness, when he’s not been tased, bound, gagged and stuffed in a trunk.
Starting off a bit slowly, the story rolls forward, gaining momentum and characters along the way. With moments from old friends and foes (Callum, Rachel and Joe) and new entrant into the mix, the severely social phobic Julia who spends more time trying to be invisible while she manages to organize even the craziest requests, as well as the manga-themed computer whiz Elle, the story mixes laugh till you cry moments with friendship, action, heart wrenching stories and the uncanny ability to keep readers engaged and wanting to know more.
Not for those who can’t appreciate humor that has moments of Benny Hill mixed in with the true hearts and emotions of a cast of characters that are full of surprises.
I received an eArc copy of the title from the publisher via NetGalley for purpose of honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own responsibility. This review was originally posted on I am, Indeed
Book One in the Benson Security series. It’s a fantastic start to a spin-off of the Invertary series. No, you do not have to have read that series first. Some of the characters overlap, but not in a way that you are lost if you haven’t read the Invertary series. If you haven't read the Invertary series, don't let that stop you from starting this series! It’s a great one!
Janet Elizabeth Henderson is one of my go-to authors when I’m looking for humor and heart mixed with sass and snark. She is fantastic at writing all of that! Her characters are engaging and very human. You can tell a lot about the characters in how they relate to one another through their dialog. The dialog in this book is smart and snappy, filled with quick wit and emotion. You can actually feel the frustration and love. Well, OK, sometimes it’s almost hate, but they aren’t that far apart, right?
This is a great read if you’re looking for adventure. You can easily put yourself in the middle of all the action, the planning and plotting. I look forward to reading more in this series.
I have to give it to Ms. Henderson, it couldn't have been easy to take such a serious issue and have the talent to mix it up with a romantic comedy. But she made it work for this book. The interactions between Dimitri and Megan are hilarious most of the time, in fact the majority of characters in this book are fun to read and get to know, with the exception of one person (and that person isn't even the antagonist!)
There is plenty of action in this book, and if you've read any of the Invertary series, you'll be happy to know that some of those characters make cameo appearances in this book. The chemistry between Dimitri and Megan are pretty hot, he's got the whole alpha thing happening, but it's clear to see how he feels about Megan. And while she sometimes bristles at his high-handedness, she feels all kinds of ways for him as well. The case was resolved with a somewhat happy ending, but the lead in for the next book promises to be highly entertaining and I can't wait to read it!
I have had this in my queue for a while and was hesitant to read it only because of the subject matter. But this book was so well written! While being sensitive it was oh so hilarious. I love Megan. I’m pretty sure she’s my super hero. I can’t wait to read the rest of this series.
Can't stop laughing out loud while reading this story. Kudos to Janet for making this so action pact yet so funny and romantic. Can't even put it down....as usual Megan's antics is so entertaining and Dimitri's so patient and determined to get his girl. Love it!
Again I’m reading a series out of order, but the books can definitely be read as standalones. Who doesn’t love a romantic suspense with LOL moments, sexual tension galore, and gripping action and adventure? Reckless has that and much more which is a fantastic beginning to a noteworthy series.
Megan Donaldson is fearless, reckless, and a hotheaded warrior. She would do anything to protect her twin sister, Claire. Even risk her life. But as a new member of Benson Security and partner to the hot and dangerous former Ranger Dimitri Raast, she needs to learn to work with a team. Can Dimitri rein her in, or will her rashness get them all killed?
Dimitri Raast’s sister has been kidnapped and forced into human trafficking and Dimitri and Benson Security is determined to bring the man down who is responsible for harming his sister. However, he needs to keep the beautiful and rebellious Megan out of trouble which is not working out as he expected.
I love Ms. Henderson’s riveting and entertaining Benson Security series. The pull between Megan and Dimitri is thrilling and the suspense is intense and engrossing. Their teasing is hilarious with a wonderful group of supporting characters who add substance and color to the story.
I recommend this fast-paced romantic suspense novel to those who enjoy LOL one-liners, a complex storyline, and very real subject matter.
Thank you to Ms. Henderson for giving me the opportunity to read this book with no expectation of a positive review.
This book manages to be a fun romantic comedy while handling heavy subject matter in a respectful way to give us suspense. That’s impressive because it’s no easy task. Megan and Dimitri have great chemistry and I loved the banter between them. He’s an experienced operator, level-headed and smooth, while she’s a wild card who may harm their efforts as much as she helps, yet they work well together.
This story is written in third person POV and I’m not a fan at all. That always sucks some of the enjoyment out of a story. I try hard not to let it bother me but unless a story is so excellent as to warrant ten stars on a scale of one to five, it’s a huge distraction. I enjoyed their story but can’t help wondering if it would’ve been great instead of just good had the author used first person POV.
Wow! This was an interesting book. Realistically the storyline could have been told in two or three chapters but the author padded it out admirably with a lot of humour and sexual frisson. Put simply, we've got a bad bad man who's captured the sister of one of the main characters and sold her as a sex slave. The brother, Dimitri, intends to get her back, with the help of the security consultant team, and the plan is to use the other principal character, Megan, as bait. The brother becomes romantically attached to Megan so there's a lot at stake. On top of that Megan is a bit of a loose cannon.
There was a lot going on in what seemed like a highly improbably security business with the main characters loosely divided into two groups, the males, and the females. One of the more improbable aspects of this story is what seemed to be a pissing competition between the two groups, at an individual, one on one level as well as at a combined group level. It was amusing but just didn't work when you think about it because it was so silly.
A very good balance of a serious topic immersed in an amazing and entertaining story. With the topic of human trafficking you would think there would be no way an author could bring some romance and comedy to the same story, however Janet Elizabeth Henderson did just that. This story has some extremely hard topics to read about and may contain some triggers. Nothing graphically told about the rape, torture and abuse of these women, but the book let's your mind sadly picture as much as anyone who hasn't suffered such an abuse could. This is a brilliant romantic suspense, comedy, action story. Balance, that's what this book has balance! The perfect balance of topics to make this a captivating read. 4.5 stars, cast from other books make appearances I'd recommend reading in order to fully understand these characters ( but not imperative to enjoying this book) it'll make you closer to these characters if you fall in love with them in the other stories.
Ridiculous story, but written well enough that I forgot to care.
Dimitri is ex-military. He's now in a private security start-up based in London. Before the Benson Security team officially starts taking clients, they are hunting down the mastermind of a white-slave trade ring to rescue Dimitri's sister, who was taken a year ago.
Megan has been brought on board with Benson's team as bait. She is the identical twin to the girl the ringleader wants revenge on.
Megan and Dimitri partner up and the sparks fly enemies to lovers style.
Megan is completely reckless and fearless of consequences, while Dimitri is trying to keep her safe while still getting the Intel needed to rescue his sister.
I wasn't a fan of these two. They have a love-hate relationship which didn't grab me. I did love the secondary couple, smooth-talking Joe and introverted Julia whose book is next in the series.
This was a spicy, funny action story that kept me engaged the whole time. I must say that the MFC did make me a little crazy with her impulsive behavior at times but she was just doing what she thought she needed to do.
I enjoyed the banter, the romance and the spicy scenes between the two main characters, as well as the supporting characters. The main plot of the story was very well written, even though it was a sad story and involves (off the page) SA, kidnapping, sex trafficking, rape, and other violent acts that are described such as assault, shooting, etc.
It's not often that I see a book that tackles heavy subject matter but also has a comedic element to it as well. I enjoyed this author's writing style.
Megan is just crazy enough to get into scrapes as she works to become a security 'hired gun'. Dimitri both suffers and is fascinated by her.
Trying to save his sister and protect hers, they get into some heated exchanges, both angry and passionate.
I love the focus on the women being powerful, and on the lack of understanding men have about women's experience of fear and violence all over the world.
I also love that the men listen, understand, and are angry on behalf of the women suffering in this book.
The adventure is great, Megan's meeting with Rudi is awesome, and there are some hilarious and silly moments too.
I am sticking with this author, for real. I've been reading almost all the book in her collection lmao. I'm LOOOVING it.
In Benson Security series we have : Action- suspense and love A funny-annoying-hilarious and unique heroine. A hero who is and alpha but oh he is a beta against the heroine .... hhhaha
• • Some serious issues as trafficking, feminism and our roles as women on this society - I loved as the author handle a Serious thing as slave traffic. I felt it on my heart... ♥
We love benson security team! In the first book you can see as they start to build relationships between the team. It's fantastic.
This was a strange book. I was expecting a serious fast paced drama about a private security firm, what I got was an ex-army guy working with a young girl who has a lack of any talent apart from using her feet to kick men in the balls, is her role to be the comedic element? From the meal in the chinese restaurant I judged her behaviour to be a teenager. I stopped reading at around 30 pages I couldn't read the other 300. Yet the blurb sounded really good.
Janet Elizabeth Henderson stretches her talent to the mysteries of the security firm created by Lake Benson in her Invertary series books and has created a series of nail-biting stories I could not put down but infused at the same time with the chuckle-out-loud humour of the first series. You’ll love the characters, some new and some cross-over. A great read, over and over again.
I would of gave this a 5 but I had a extremely hard time liking Megan. I know she was supposed to come off as the tough woman & kinda clumsy sorta but still come out on top. But she really had no regards for people safety. Happy with the end results of this book. I’m looking forward to reading the next book. Fingers crossed I continue loving Joe & Julia!
Such a hard subject to write about. I found the story interesting and was invested in a positive outcome. Megan is a great lead with her self deprecating humour and need to make things right. Dimitri has been living a nightmare for the last year and is very driven. They counterbalanced each other really well.
Buffy aka Megan is protecting her sister and being bait. She’s also a slightly manic hilarious beautiful tornado so we love her. And Demitri is moving heaven and earth to get his sister back from next-level trafficker. Megan and the girls go off the reservation but theirs consequences.
