How to Make Me Read a Book? Give me a delicious cover like this one!

Gina Malone is a bestselling author, known for giving expert relationship advice. In addition to her books, she also has an advice column on the side.

The book starts with her about to take a European vacation to visit her children. Right before takeoff, she posts a reply on her advice column, advising a woman to leave her controlling husband and to seek help. Unfortunately, her husband sees the post and doesn’t take too kindly to it.

Back to her new home somewhere in Canada (I already forget where), she not only has to deal with a nosy family and a nosy town, but she also feels an attraction towards the carpenter who’s fixing up her beach cottage.

If that’s not enough, her ex-husband, a dick named Dick, is stalking her. And now, she seems to have a SECOND stalker, the husband of the wife who asked for Gina’s advice. The wife is now missing…

This is an amusing and decent debut to a new series (it looks like there will be at least two more books in The Ex-Whisperer Files). The strongest thing it has going for it is the characters. Gina is awesome! I loved everything about her, and she came off as real. Her cousin, Florrie, and the carpenter, Hugh, were great as well.

However, I didn’t quite love this like I’d hoped. It’s very dialogue-heavy, which isn’t always an issue, but there’s a lot of time spent repeating speculations and suspicions. Some of the situations that occur are both eye-rolling and not very compelling. Luckily, there’s some charm (and dogs) in the mix. I was also expecting to laugh, but this only elicited a few smiles from me.

Oddly enough, I can see this working really well on TV...and the author is also a screenwriter… 🤔

I think I’ve come to hope that all of these books with fun covers in the comedic mystery genre will be like the Finlay Donovan series, but they are not. I liked this one enough, and I may read the next one, but the only series I’m definitely sticking with is Ms. Finlay’s.

Thank you to Level Best Books and NetGalley UK for an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Expected Publication Date: 11/9/21.

Everything about this book should have been my jam.

A near fifty sassy Italian main character. She's a reader, a writer, and a dog lover. She moves back to her home town to be closer to her boisterous Italian family and further from her ex-husband that just won't leave her alone. Upon arriving back home she meets her new handyman that's going to renovate her cabin but the problem is he has a deranged ex-wife who believes she is a homewrecker. Not only that but the relationship column she writes has gotten her into trouble. When a woman writes her about her controlling husband she advices her to leave him but her husband has become privy to this information and is on a mission to find her to make her pay for his wife walking out on him. Three stalkers? Oh my!

This should be fun!

But, sadly, it really wasn't. Don't get me wrong this isn't terrible by any means but I'd be lying if I didn't say this was boring. All the chapters read the same as the one before it and my interest was quickly depleting to the point that I really didn't care what was happening. Now had the humor been on point then my opinion may have been different but this was not the laugh out loud funny book that I was hoping for. In fact, I don't think I even chuckled once. I realize humor is subjective so others may find this hilarious but it never once tickled my funny bone. As far as the romance goes I wasn't feeling the chemistry and honestly if I had been him I would have bailed on this neurotic mess of a woman and her odd ball family. The highlight of this book for me were the animals - Spook the cat, Phoebe the Giant Schnauzer, and Snowflake the Poodle. Those three and their shenanigans did bring a smile to my face.

This quote earned it another 1/2 star because I found it totally relatable:

"My imagination regularly runs the gamut between serving me brilliantly and sabotaging me brutally."

The ending is a cliffhanger to lure the reader to book #2 in the series but it is safe to say that this is a one and done for me. 2.5 stars!

Thank you to NetGalley and Level Best Books for my complimentary copy.

This book lived up to its awesome cover, at least for me. Although I must confess that I would not want Gina Malone for a friend, she was an entertaining companion for the duration of this mystery. I assume that St. George is planning to write more adventures of Gina, since it is billed as book one of the Ex-Whisperer Files.

Gina is impulsive, loud, brash—all those things that women are not encouraged to be. Just what women should appreciate, instead of knuckling under to “properness" as her two Italian aunties would have her do. Yes, she made a stupid choice with her husband (now ex-husband), but members of my own family have been fooled by narcissistic, manipulative men. They can hide the crazy long enough to reel in their fish.

Giving relationship advice is probably not what Gina should be doing, but she does have a lot of painful experience and acquired wisdom to share. Solving other people's problems is an excellent way to distract yourself from your own crap and avoid doing anything about it. A classic procrastination ploy.

I'm glad to have enjoyed this book, as I recommended that my library purchase it.

HOW TO MURDER A MARRIAGE is the debut fiction novel by Canadian scriptwriter Gabrielle St. George.

After a protracted and costly divorce, Gina Malone is selling up and heading back to the small, lakeside town where she grew up. She’s trying not to think of it as a step back, but it’s certainly not the move she envisaged as a nearly 50 year old. Her family welcomes her back with open arms, and there is even a hunky builder she’s hired to do her home renovations. Yet there is some baggage that she just can’t shake: Her ex-husband is still trying to manipulate her, and an anonymous reader of her advice column enmeshes Gina in her domestic crisis.

Theoretically, I should have gobbled up this book, but it ultimately fell short of expectations. It felt like a story suffering an identity crisis; is it supposed to be a humorous cosy mystery? A tense crime thriller? Or a romantic suspense novel? The story swings between all these and I was often left feeling off kilter reading it, but not always in a good way.

The mystery loses steam by the halfway mark and the romance barely gets off the ground.

Where St. George shows real skill is in her characterisations, especially when written in a humorous tone. There are numerous laugh-out-loud moments involving Gina’s zany family. Even ex husband Dick, and Hugh’s (the builder) ex Iris, provide some laughs.

From what I’ve read, The Ex-Whisperer Files is going to be a three book series. While this book was an okay read, I liked the characters more than enough to give the next book a go.

Readers who like to read thrillers but without the gore or huge dead body count may want to check out this book. The main character, Gina is just who I needed. I like that she was not in her mid twenties but older. I don't think there is enough older female protagonist. So when I come across one that can kick some serious butt too; I get excited.

What woman would not love to have two men vying for her attention. Any women unless those two men are creepy stalkers. One is Gina's ex husband and the other is the husband of a woman that Gina gave advice to.

This is a fast paced book. It gave me a bit of Gone Girl vibes. I do look forward to reading the next book in this series.

What an intriguing, fun and suspenseful read! I read the book when it first released and then listened to the audio version before reading the second book in the series. How to Murder a Marriage was even better the second time around! The narrator is fantastic! The voice is a perfect fit for the witty and sarcastic Gina Malone. I highly recommend listening to the audio while driving, cooking or taking a long, hot bath, but definitely not while alone in a cottage on Lake Huron! I can’t wait to dive into the next book in Gabrielle St. George’s The Ex-Whisperer Files series!

3.75 ⭐️~ rounded up to 4 on goodreads

As far as a debut novel goes I think this one was very well done. It was a fun story with a sarcastic main character that made me smile a few times. This was a quick flowing book that I easily finished in 24ish hours.

There were a few times that things were repetitive and maybe even a little far fetched but still very enjoyable.

I will certainly be on the lookout for book 2 in this series.

If you enjoyed Finlay Donovan Is Killing It, this book is for you. 😎

⚠️ Trigger warning: domestic abuse (not in explicit detail) ⚠️

It is out now! ~ Pub date Nov 9.

I was hooked instantly! How to Murder a Marriage was a fun mystery novel mixed with a hint of romance that I found hard to put down. I found the MC really likeable, Gina Malone was a great combination of sweet and sassy which provided good humour, especially with her and Zia. The story itself and writing style flowed excellently which made it all the more enjoyable to read. I can’t wait to read the next in the series!

I wanted to love this book because of the amazing cover and having the main character be middle aged, divorced, sarcastic, mysterious and add a little romantic options in the mix…hello I was SOLD!
I thought I would connect with Gina the protagonist. However, I felt the writing was a bit disjointed and it was like reading an outline of a book, and lacked that extra depth of thought & emotion for it to be complete.
It does have a cliffhanger and I unfortunately will be passing on the series.
Many thanks for the gifted copy.

This book was fantastic! I absolutely loved the writing style of this author.

Immediately from the beginning, it has me hooked! I don’t know what it is but I really like the stalker aspect of this book. From the beginning, you think, “oh OK, Gina’s husband is going to be a problem,” with his psycho self. But then you read about Lillian and you start to think, damn now we have another problem on our hands. It just was a twist of it all! I really loved that through the whole book you’re kind of wondering: is it Lillian’s husband, is a Gina’s ex-husband, DICKIRIS lol,
Things I really liked; I really liked the different twist, really liked Hugh (The reference to Denny from Grey’s Anatomy was perfect. That’s literally how I imagined him).

Things that I thought were OK; I did feel like there was a lot of descriptions that kind of just were a little much. I enjoyed being able to imagine all of it but sometimes I just felt like 3-4 lines of descriptions weren’t really necessary. But I enjoyed it, none the less.

I definitely recommend this book: a four out of five. I wish there was more of a romance aspect of it but honestly I feel like with all the plot twist and the suspense, that the book held on its own by itself.

Gina is an advice columnist writer with a psychotic ex husband on the loose. Lillian, a reader of her columns, writes in seeking advice as she is in an abusive relationship and scared for her life. Gina’s advice it to leave him and flea to a shelter, which now makes two crazy ex husbands trying to get to Gina.

She leaves the big city to find comfort in her hometown, cozy cabin, only to find herself followed but these crazy men. She’s falling for the contractor, Hugh, that is redoing her cabin, and trying to find solace here, while also endangering herself with these crazies.

This book was such a page turner for me. It reminded me of Finley Donovan is Killing It, with the humor and dialogue of the characters. I really enjoyed it!

There were so many fun things about this book! I loved that the main character was Italian (her family was my favorite), I loved that she was older and she had grown kids and I loved the mystery and suspense.
Gina is an advice columnist that is going through a divorce from her long time husband and father of her kids. He is a bit crazy and doesn't want to let her go even though he has "moved on" in more ways than one.
One day she gets an email from a reader that asks her for help. She is in fear of her life and thinks her husband is going to kill her. Gina gets intertwined in this mess from the start. The husband writes her and then a neighbor, leading her to believe that this woman is in real danger. She doesn't know exactly this woman is, but with the help of her friends she tracks her down and begins trying to save her.
I really enjoyed a lot of this book and the suspense, but there were parts that I was a bit confused about. The ending just didn't satisfy me, but I do understand that there will be more books in this series so maybe that will help. If you like older characters, suspense and a touch of romance thrown in, then this book is for you!

I enjoyed this book it was easy to read and kept me gripped.
I like the authors writing style, I enjoyed reading the blog posts which were included. The MC Gina was witty and likeable.
Gina is an online relationship advisor and runs a blog. She advises one of her readers to leave her husband, she ends up going missing and Gina ends up with a scary stalker. Who is the stalker and what lengths will they go to, to get what they want?
I wasn’t sure which way the story was going to go, it kept me guessing until the end.
I would definitely read another book by this author.

The writing style is super smart and witty, which I absolutely loved. The narrator is sarcastic, a smidge bitter, and oh so real about how she really feels. I did have to suspend belief here and there because honestly, even considering the main character’s profession, how does one attract so many stalkers? Is it really that common?!

Otherwise, it was a light, fun mystery that kept me hooked through to the end. I would absolutely pick up another title from this author. Thank you to NetGalley for letting me read this ARC!

This book should be a movie or a mini-series. It's lovely!

How to Murder a Marriage tells the story of Gina, a bestselling relationships advice author and expert on exes. She's also divorced, an empty nester, and turning fifty. Gina advises a reader to leave her husband right before the woman goes missing. Now Gina's got a stalker. Is it her vengeful ex-husband, the abusive ex of the missing woman, or her new crush's crazy ex? Can Gina outsmart her stalker and find the missing woman before the noose around her own neck gets any tighter?

I liked that the book reads in movie-script-writing qualities. It's a classic "and then" story, taking the reader through Gina's path of discovering what is going on, and that's the first rule of great thrillers!

I LOVED that the characters' actions and decisions drive the plot. Almost nothing just accidentally happens to the characters, they make the decisions and react to the consequences, and that's the second rule of great storytelling!

Gina is the compelling and dynamic force entrenched in the story. And she sounds awesome.

Gina's world is a world I love to keep visiting, as the ex-whisperer continues!

Many thanks to @mbc_books and @gabrielle.st.george for sharing with me the advanced copy for my honest review. It was my pleasure!

Gina Malone, writer of the Ex-Whisperer column, finds herself in a precarious situation after giving advice to a woman looking to leave her abusive husband.

When Gina moves back to her hometown, she finds herself surrounded by family, a new love interest, and three potentially dangerous stalkers? Her controlling ex-husband, her new crush’s unhinged ex-wife, and the potentially dangerous husband of the woman she advised from her column, who has suddenly gone missing.

This has a little bit of everything, a woman pursuing new dreams after divorce, a domestic thriller, the excitement of new romance, and murder mystery.

The pacing slowed a bit in the middle third, where it felt like a lot of conversation surrounding all of the stalkers was happening and not much else, but overall, very enjoyable!

3 1/2 stars and would definitely read the next book in the Ex-Whisperer series!

I’m always excited to read something unique and this one sounded like it would fit the bill for that and I was mostly right…

There was a lot to like in this quirky and original read but there was also something missing for me. Sometimes it felt like I was reading a cozy mystery and then it would switch gears and feel like women’s fiction and then change again with some suspense which just left me feeling off kilter. Almost like it needed to pick a lane I guess? I did really like Gina as a narrator and found her to be wickedly funny and sharp, truly what kept me at all connected to the story. This is the start of a new series and I would probably give the next book a chance, it’s certainly quirky which isn’t a bad thing for me.

I thoroughly enjoyed this. It's a fun light-hearted mystery with an element of romance. I enjoyed that the main character was an older mother instead of a 20-something like these types of stories tend to be. The twists and turns were unexpected for the most part but still made sense with the plotline. Would recommend it for a fun mystery read.

How to Murder a Marriage is a cozy mystery that asks a *very* important question: how many stalkers is too many?

Our heroine Gina Malone has decided that three stalkers is two more than she's willing to handle. Her first - the sociopathic, obsessed ex-husband that refuses to fade into the background - has become a standard fixture in her life. He's a con-man who swindled her out of her money and home, but gave her the four children she loves more than anything, so she's made her peace with his low-key stalking and threats. Gina's a bestselling relationship author and advice columnist, so she's well-equipped to deal with her ex's emotional warfare, and also how she picks up her second stalker. She begins receiving threats from one of her reader's husbands upon finding out his wife left him per Gina's advice. He wants to find his missing wife and bring her home, and decides that Gina's the best way to do it, so begins sending her threatening messages until she gives up the location of his wife. After being forced to sell her dream home now that her children have all fled the coop, she returns to her hometown to be surrounded by her family and renovate her cabin on the shores of Lake Huron, and not a moment too soon considering she's got two annoying men on her tail. Unfortunately, it is also how she gains one final stalker - the hot new contractor she's hired to renovate her cabin has his own crazy ex. When all her crazy baggage comes together in what she thought was her safe harbor and the threats begin to escalate, will Gina be able to outsmart all of them before she becomes carnage?

This book has so much going for it - an easy reading style with good pacing, wit and sarcasm galore, and an absolute take-no-shit heroine with her crazy Italian-Irish girl-boss posse. How hilarious are her tarot card reading meddling Southern Italian (very important distinction) Zia Angela and Zia Rosa, and cousin Florrie!?!? Also, points to any author who can convey a location so well that it becomes another entry on my travel wish list! Many thanks to Gabrielle St. George, Level Best Books, and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion and review - very much looking forward to reading the next few books in the series!

A clever plot with fun characters and great dynamics between all that came on the page.

Gina Malone writes books and a blog giving relationship advice to others even as her own marriage is imploding. After she gives advice to one writer telling her to leave her abusive husband, the husband starts attacking Gina online. Her kids have left home and now that she and her husband have split, she dyes her hair, gets a nose ring and moves back to her hometown on the shores of Lake Huron. It isn’t long after she arrives that she feels she is being watched and strange things start occurring. Gina has a stalker, but is it her ex-husband holding a grudge, the husband of the woman who wrote to her or someone else entirely?

This book had great potential to be a clever and funny read all while being suspenseful at the same time. Unfortunately for me, it fell flat in a lot of places. It really wasn’t that funny; the suspense had its moments, but I also found myself just ready to finish the story. The blog exerts were interesting and could have used a few more to keep the story moving at a better pace. The relationship between Gina and Hugh was the best, I enjoyed their flirting and dynamic. Gina has a few scenes with her children at the beginning but nothing more making me think that could have been omitted and not hurt the story. This is the start of a series as the ending is left wide open for the next. I’m not sure that I will be diving into the next as this one was only mediocre. While this wasn’t the book for me, I do think readers that enjoy crime writing with a little edge to it will enjoy this one.

I received a complimentary copy of this title from the publisher. The views and opinions expressed within are my own.

Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review!

How to Murder a Marriage by Gabrielle St. George is a book that combines two genres: thriller and comedy. The story revolves around Gina, who works as an advice columnist for relationship problems. One day, when she's advising her readers, the obsessive husband of one of her readers writes her back and threatens her. Now, someone is stalking Gina. Is it her reader's husband or is it Gina's ex-husband?

Here is a humorous excerpt from Chapter 1:

"TOP 6 MOST STRESSFUL LIFE EVENTS
Divorce: Check (After six years, my crazy ex-husband is still dragging me through the courts.
Death of a Loved One: Check (My best girlfriend / soul sister died in my arms four months ago. F*** cancer.)
Moving House: Check (I built my dream house and intended to be carried out of it in a box. Instead, I'm carrying boxes out of it, packed with the belongings I didn't garage sale when I had to hark my house at a fire sale price.)"

Overall, How to Murder a Marriage is a blend of thriller and comedy that will appeal to fans of the Finlay Donovan series. I've noticed a lot of books that combine these two genres lately. Although they're unique and interesting, I do find that sometimes the humor and levity can outweigh the thriller aspects. The synopsis makes this sounds like a suspenseful read, but when there are so many humorous moments as well, all the tension goes away. As a result, I wasn't drawn into Gina's plight. If you're intrigued by the excerpt above, or if you're a fan of thrillers in general, you can check out this book, which is available now!

“After a while, I understood there aren’t any winners in divorce. There are only those who move on in life and those who say mired in the muck. Fuck muck.”

Gina Malone meddles in other peoples affairs for a living. She is a spunky Italian best selling relationship advice author and expert on exes. She is divorced with a stalkerish ex, she’s turning 50, her kids have flown the coop, and she is moving out of the huge house she got in the divorce to a much smaller family cottage in a small Canadian town. But then Gina advises a woman to leave her abusive husband, and said woman goes missing. Now someone is stalking Gina. Is it her crazy ex? The missing woman’s crazy husband? Or the crazy ex of the sexy contractor working in her new place?

Ok having married into an off the boat Italian family I am obsessed with the aunts! They are so funny, sassy, and have sooo much attitude. Love love love them. This book was very entertaining. Gina’s bad luck may have been a little eye roll inducing if not for her wit and spunk. Everything she looks at, touches, or even thinks about seems to go wrong. But she has a lot of heart and it redeems her when her story goes a bit off the rails. This is the first book in the new series The Ex-Whisperer Files and I am excited to see where the story goes!

How to Murder a Marriage
By Gabrielle St. George
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
•••
Summary:
Gina Malone is a best selling author who offers relationship advice and tips on how to deal with pesky exes. Gina’s job has definitely caused her to make a few enemies. And now, one of her enemies is making quite the threats against her. You see, Gina gave one reader some advice to leave her husband and now the husband wants Gina to stay out of things. But what happens when the wife goes missing? Gina soon discovers that she has a stalker, but she’s not sure who it could be. Her ex husband? The husband of the woman who is now missing? Her new boyfriend’s crazy ex? It’s up to Gina to outsmart her stalker… whoever that may be.
•••
My thoughts:
Did you like Finlay Donovan is Killing It? This definitely gave me Finlay vibes. This book was quirky, cute and mysterious and I really, really enjoyed it. I like mysteries that also have some cute components to them. Gina and her family were such great characters to follow and I’m a bigggg fan of Hugh. Highly recommend this one!

Read if you:
- Have a crazy ex
- Are afraid of rats
- Have a huge family that would do anything for you

This story leaves a question: how can she outsmart her stalkers?

TW: domestic abuse, suicide & murder

This book is unbelievable! The moment I started chapter 1 of the book, it has kept me turning the pages for 2 consecutive nights. It’s a fun mystery crime book that I really sink my teeth into. The writing style of @gabrielle.st.george is well-balanced and effortless. There’s a fair share of wittiness and sarcasm, romance, suspense and mystery. It isn’t really stressful to read at all. The reading process I have experienced is captivating since I get to formulate theories. But, then I will be surprised from the unexpected twists. It has kept me guessing and seeking answers to my questions until the last page of the book. For example, is having 2 stalkers is possible in real life? Howcome CCTV’s aren’t installed in the establishments like restaurants and bakery to make the investigation process quicker???

All in all, this book is recommendable for readers who are gripping for light crime fiction novel. I’m glad to read the first book in the series. I can’t wait to read the upcoming 2 book series of The Ex-Whisperer.

I think the premise of this one was better than the execution, but that’s not to say that I didn’t like some aspects of it. I think one of my main issues is that I don’t think the author knew what kind of vibe or genre of book she wanted to write. The genres seemed to bump into each other leaving me confused as to what the feel of this was supposed to be; at certain points I felt like I was reading a cozy mystery and then it would switch gears and felt like a suspenseful thriller, and then we would head into a women’s fiction. That’s not to say that books can’t have elements of genres but this one didn’t do it well because once you were settled in the constant switch of writing became a bit disorienting and took away from my enjoyment of the book. Speaking of my enjoyment of the book I was so into our heroine, Gina, she was so savvy, smart, self-sufficient, and really cool. At some moments she made choices or acted in a way that led me to eye roll a bit but overall she was such a solid character. I really loved being in her pov and experiencing everything with her.

⚠️: Domestic Abuse

Gina Malone is a bestselling relationship advice author and expert on exes. But not everyone appreciates Gina and her meddling ways. Just as Gina begins to settle in after moving back to her hometown on the shores of Lake Huron, she advises one of her readers to leave her abusive husband. Then the woman disappears. As if it couldn’t get any worse, Gina also has a stalker. Is it her crazy ex-husband or the missing woman’s psychotic husband?

What a fun read! I loved Gina’s character because she was so smart, sassy, and full of fierce independence. To me, a good mystery/thriller will keep me guessing throughout the story and this book did exactly that! I felt there were a few loose ends after I finished but this book is part of a series so I hope to find the answers to my questions in the next book. Also can we please talk about this killer cover?? Absolutely stunning! Thank you to the author and publisher for my gifted copy
