When I put in for the giveaway I anticipated this being a book with a philosophy of horses vibe. I did not realize it was also an oracle set until it arrived.
The Book: This book doesn't disappoint in terms of delving into the "equine archetypes" and the vignettes for each card/type are interesting to read. I'm not through all of them, but it's clear the author has spent much of her life around and working with horses and has a deep understanding of their personalities and the way they view the world. The author also references outside resources on several occasions to further illustrate her observations and experiences. I've never really been into horses, but I have a curiosity about different philosophical viewpoints which this book certainly satisfies. This isn't a book meant to provide scientific knowledge of horse psychology, it's a book asking the reader to look at things from a new perspective and consider how that perspective fits in with their own experiences.
The Cards: Good: The artwork on these is beautiful. Even if you don't intend to use them as an oracle deck, they're worth a look through just for the artwork. Bad?: The cards have a coating on them that makes them feel a bit sticky when you're trying to shuffle them. They are few enough in number this isn't a huge problem, but it's definitely not a smooth shuffle. I tried to give them a few times to see if it was something from the manufacture process and while they got better, they never really got good.
Guidebook is very thorough (almost 400 pages!) with “mini essays” written for each card and a section for related cards. I’ve only read 8 of the cards so far but each card follows the same format.
The cards are hard to shuffle for me. An improvement on would be thicker cardstock to balance the glossy coating or to decrease the amount of coating with the same weight of cardstock.
Beautiful soulful horse art on the cards. The cards were also a perfect size for my small hands to shuffle. The meditations were lovely and left personal interpretations open enough for card readers.
