Walk through Doors to the Past via a new series of historical stories of romance and adventure.

What she hadn’t planned on was Chase Jones showing up with a mysterious photo from the 1920s.

A very fun and charming historical fiction read.

Undercurrent of Secrets tells the story of Devyn who works aboard the Belle of Louisville steamboat as a wedding coordinator. Soon, she meets Chase who is trying to track down a young woman named Hattie who he believes his great-grandfather had a connection with. However, Hattie seems to have disappeared without a trace. Chase and Devyn work to discover the truth about what happened to Hattie, and along the way, they begin to share their own secrets.

The story included a dual timeline that was excellently executed. The two storylines are seemingly parallel at the beginning, which made it a little difficult to keep the facts of each straight. However, they become more distinct as the novel goes on. The past storyline was slightly more interesting, but they each had their own unique events while being progressively connected.

The second half of the story was very action-packed, taking exciting twists and turns at almost every chapter. The novel was engaging, and I couldn’t wait to find out the answers to the mystery. Some of the twists I predicted but others were surprising. Everything came together so nicely by the end. I also thought that the book was the perfect length, as the story didn’t drag in any places.

The novel had a bit of everything, including romance, mystery, action, history, and a bit of tragedy. The book did have a religious influence, as the author is a Christian romance writer. I didn’t completely connect with this part, but it didn’t take away or distract from the story. At times the romance part was a bit cheesy, but I liked the love stories and their happy endings.

Overall, I really enjoyed reading this gripping historical fiction and uncovering all the fun secrets. The book is correctly named!

This dual timeline story is connected through a steamboat. Devyn Asbury is the wedding coordinator for the 100 year old steamboat Belle of Louisville. Even though her own marriage fell through, she loves helping everyone make their wedding dreams come true. A century earlier, Hattie Louis is the adopted daughter of the steamboat captain of the Belle of Louisville. When Chase Jones shows up with a photo from the 1920's showing someone on the Belle, will Devyn and Chase be able to put the pieces together?

Well written, enjoyable dual timeline with characters from both who capture your attention and never let go until the final page. McDaniel's writes a story full of romance, mystery and history that intertwines two time periods beautifully melding them into an intriguing story.

Undercurrent of Secrets is a duel time-line book and it flowed together so seamlessly. It was a very intriguing book to read, just when I thought I had it figured out a very unexpected plot twist occurs.I loved the settings of the past and present and the plots. There is intrigue, romance and plenty of adventure. I found it fascinating that the steamboat was built in Pittsburgh, having been born and raised in Pittsburgh this is a part of it's history that was unknown to me. The boat has had several names, the original being Idewild which the only Idewild I had heard of being Idelwild amusement park in Pennsylvania. I really enjoy this series for many reasons, one being that a lot of of the story is based on fact. Be sure to read the author's interesting notes in the back of the book. Informative book, I enjoyed the author's writing style and now I'll need to see what else she has out.

This author knows how to write a tale of romance, danger and mystery in an intriguing time-slip book.
Ms. McDaniel did a superb job of weaving the two time periods together by connecting them in unexpected ways. Just when I thought I had it figured out-BAM! Plot twist!
With a cute meet, we have Devyn and Chase who could be at odds but decide to join forces and search out information about a girl in an old photo and what connection she has to the historic paddle wheel boat Devyn works on. Meanwhile, Chase agrees to help her with a contest she has entered to showcase The Belle of Louisville as a wedding venue. The author takes us back in time when Hattie Louis worked and lived on the steamboat where she meets Jack who might not be who she thinks he is.
Her descriptions make me want to visit the old steamboat and Louisville, Kentucky. The faith thread was constant within: “God had a way of leading His children. It may not be the course Devyn imagined, but as long as she stayed in the current of His love, she knew she could rely on Him in both still and troubled waters. He was faithful through it all.”
Polished and interesting with swoony romance, this is why I love dual time books.

Oh. My. Goodness! As you can see, I gave this book 5 stars!!

First of all, I loved the present and the past in equal measure. There were cliffhangers at the end of chapters that had me considering skipping chapters so I could finish one era or at least the "moment" they were in. I didn't! That would've totally ruined it, of course.

We initially meet Devyn and I loved her from the moment just before she meets Chase Jones. They have some seriously fun banter and dialogue throughout the entire story. I was drawn in by the photo he brings her, which sets them on a mystery hunt for my next favorite character! She's also been hurt and it's clear she has no desire to help Chase out for any reason, but his offer to her for her help is one she just can't ignore. And Chase, with his secret that Devyn can't figure out. Seriously, you just feel for the guy from the start!

Oh, Hattie! Here we head back to 1926. If only I had the same kind of gumption as she did. It was a kick in the pants as we meet her and Jack. If you're ready for your heart to grow for a couple, be prepared with these two! They're both strong and fiery. I could NOT for the life of me figure Jack out, just like Hattie. Like her, it was kind of making me crazy. lol And her "adopted" father, Duffy just warmed my heart.

I absolutely adored the Belle/Idlewild. She became one of the characters of the story and I actually teared up at one spot towards the end. I know, sounds goofy, but wait until you read it and then you'll understand!

There were some twists that were completely unexpected and that really excited me and as I kept reading, to watch it all unfold was heart-filling! Of course with any good mystery (two for the price of one with this story) there are terrible people who you just want to shove into the river as the Belle/Idlewild is moving right along.

I obviously can't say a lot about the storyline or the plot twists because they are at the heart of the story! Let me just say you will be completely satisfied at the end of the book!

*I received this book for review. This is my personal opinion.

Undercurrent of Secrets by Rachel Scott McDaniel is a duel time line and it flowed flawlessly. I never felt the story being disrupted, or annoyed by going from the 1900's to the present time. I enjoyed both time periods, and all the characters. This book contained some suspense, mystery, and two oh so sweet romances. This author knows how to write romance!! She is a new to me author and I will definitely be reading more books by her. I loved it!

4.5 stars!

Characters: Most of the time when I read split-time novels, I end up liking one story way better than the other and kind of dreading when the other one comes up. I'm happy to report this wasn't the case with this one (at least not most of the time). And I'm pretty sure one of the reasons I liked both stories was the characters. Both Devyn (the modern main lady) and Hattie (the historical main lady) had great personalities. I especially liked Hattie's sense of humor.

Language: Clean.

Moral: The main theme of this book was trusting God. Let's just say Devyn had problems with this :)

Plot: Like I said before, I enjoyed both the modern and the historical stories. Plenty of character developments, plot twists, and suspenseful elements (in the historical plot) kept me flipping pages. I did see Chase's revelation coming for a while, but it was still a good twist.

Romance: Clean. A few kisses. A couple of parts got a little sappier than I would've liked, but I guess I can't complain when I pick up a romance novel :) One other picky thing ... I got a little tired of reading about just how handsome Jack (the historical guy) and Chase (the modern guy) were.

Writing: This is the first book I've read by Rachel, and I don't want it to be the last. Her writing style worked well with both the modern and the historical stories, and I loved the unique voices she gave her main characters.

Overall: Undercurrent of Secrets was an entertaining read, and I'd recommend it to those who enjoy Christian fiction, split-time novels, historical romance, and contemporary romance.

Haa! Finally a timeline romance I enjoyed..yes, being one of those people who isn't a fan of timeline stories..this book was well written
It's not even that I don't like timeline stories. it's more like I want it to be well intriguing and well worth of both the times and stories

I enjoyed this book so much..all the story was put together in a perfect-to-go way to set me into it..having enjoyed both the stories and romances. I greatly enjoyed the personalities and characters of all the main protagonists
The main focus being directed towards God's Word and God's love I'm in love with the way it was mentioned in the story and how deep the truth was represented by the story.
To be honest It took a bit of time to get INTO the book but once I got I'm too interested to know the truth

I'm happy I got to read this book

Undercurrent of Secrets is the first book I've read by author Rachel Scott McDaniel. I was immediately hooked, and this beautiful dual timeline story kept me turning pages late into the night! Great character development, wonderful perfectly timed unveiling of secrets, wonderful heroes, and spunky heroines. Loved this story!

A perfect blend of page-turning contemporary and historical fiction, mystery, and romance!

What I love about dual timeline stories is how the two are connected by the end. For the historical fiction portion, upon finishing the story, I love googling the history I was unaware of until this book! When I finished Undercurrent of Secrets and the author's notes, I immediately googled The Belle of Louisville, trying to see if I can work that into my upcoming travel plans not too far from there.

Codebreaker Elizabeth Friedman is mentioned in this book. (I was excited to know who she was since I read 'The Woman Who Smashed Codes: A True Story of Love, Spies, and the Unlikely Heroine Who Outwitted America's Enemies" a few years ago after visiting the National Cryptologic Museum, during a reader/writer weekend in Maryland.)

Thank you to the author and publisher for allowing me to read an early copy of Undercurrent of Secrets. I highly recommend it, and I can't wait to read other books by this author that are on my to-be-read pile! All opinions are my own.

Undercurrent of secrets was a Christian romance mystery and my first novel by this author. I liked the dual timelines and was drawn in by the mystery of what happened to Hattie.
Weddings on a boat felt idyllic and I also love history so that part of the story really worked for me. Chase and Jack were definitely great boyfriend material but Devyn and Hattie weren’t as likable. Hattie was so mannish and Devyn was very immature. I did like the story but thought with those few changes this could have been a 5 star book.

Oh my stars, this book! Be still my vintage-loving heart! I became a forever fan of Rachel Scott McDaniel’s books when I read her debut novel almost two years ago. She’s one of those authors that I automatically want to read everything they write, even before I know anything about it! So, needless to say I was eagerly anticipating Undercurrent of Secrets, and oh my word it exceeded every single one of my sky-high expectations! This story swept me away from page one, and I wasn’t ready to say goodbye to these characters when I turned the final page! Devyn is an amazing character and I found myself relating to her in several ways. And Chase, oh my, talk about a sweet, swoon-worthy hunk of a hero! And historical hero Jack is equally swoon-worthy in his own right! (I totally and unashamedly finished this book with two new book boyfriends!) And, of course I can’t forget Hattie, I loved her so much, she’s such an inspiring character, and I totally wanna be like her when I grow up!
As a history nerd I love the way Rachel makes history come alive for the reader, and she writes so beautifully and brilliantly that the story plays out like a movie in my mind’s eye. I felt like I was really there on the Idlewild/Belle of Louisville sailing on the Ohio river!
The faith story in this book is utterly magnificent, powerful, and soul stirring. It touched my heart deeply!
Aside from getting two amazing stories in one book the thing I love most about time-slip novels is the way the two storylines intertwine, and in this one, oh my goodness, the amazing way Hattie and Devyn’s stories connect is so beautiful it not only put a huge smile on my face, but in my reader heart as well, and nearly brought me to tears! Bravo, Rachel!
I absolutely and completely adored every single moment of this book, and I’m already eagerly looking forward to a re-read!
I most highly recommend Undercurrent of Secrets! If you only read one book during the remainder of 2021 make it this one, you won’t be sorry!
Undercurrent of Secrets is everything I want in a book and so much more, it’s one of my favorite reads of 2021, and has a permanent spot on my keeper shelf!

I was having fun reading this lighthearted story learning the history of The Belle of Louisville as Devyn and her friend prepare to enter the Timeless Wedding Venue contest, then all of a sudden, the author takes readers on a mysterious adventure. Readers meet Chase Jones, a man searching for a woman in a torn photograph. Devy's love of history draws her into this mystery. She could not pass up an opportunity to solve a case. I was fascinated by this historical aspect of the novel. The author did a marvelous job of captivating readers in both timelines. I enjoyed the steamboat setting as it made this story all the more intriguing as Chase and Devvy dig deep to uncover secrets of the Belle of Louisville riverboat. I liked the way the author naturally wove in the faith element as Devyn struggled with letting go of control and letting God be in charge of everything.

I also enjoyed how the author had Devyn and Chase learn interesting things about the ship in current time, and then the make that event in history come alive, so readers could get the full effect of the situation. This is a wonderful summer read and one that would be perfect for your next book club pick. This is the first novel I have read by this author, It won’t be the last.

"Then and there Devyn decided her happiness would not hinge on circumstances. She could be filled with joy despite the changes in life."

Rachel Scott McDaniel has penned some great historical fiction that I loved and this novel is clearly her best work yet. In this dual timeline novel, Hattie from the late 1920s speaks to us in first person narrative while Devyn from present time engages us in third person perspective. I loved how a steamboat that has weathered history and age ties the two women's lives together. The author's beautiful and vivid descriptions made me feel like I was a part of the steamboat's crew and a part of the river in both timelines. Hattie and Jack's relationship is sweet, tender, and passionate while Devyn and Chase's interactions and dialogue are cute, witty, fun, and full of sass and flirtations. The underlying tension and suspense in the mystery of who Hattie was and what happened to her is quite delicious, as are the twists and turns in the plot. With well-written, captivating prose and dialogue, a clever and seamless plot, lovable characters, and a nice thread of finding faith and one's true identity, Undercurrent of Secrets is sure to please every reader.

1926 and present day Kentucky and nearby states

Engaging time slip novel! My favorite of this series so far.

In the present day, a year after being publicly dumped by her fiance, Devyn is still healing. She's not pining for her former fiance, but rather recovering from trusting her heart to another and having it torn to shreds. She buries herself in her job as a wedding coordinator aboard the Belle.

In 1926, Hattie is an orphan that was taken in by riverboat captain Duffy. She loves her life, but feels abandoned by her birth parents.

The mystery and story lines in both time periods were captivating. The tomboy personalities of both leading females was refreshing. I especially loved the humor throughout and the banter in the current day thread. One of my favorite lines by Devyn: "Breakfast with Jesus and chocolate. The arsenal needed to survive this day."

Rachel McDaniel has written her best work yet with this time slip novel.

My gratitude to publisher Barbour for a complimentary NetGalley copy of the novel. I was not required to post a review and all opinions expressed are my own.

What an absolute delight this was! Wonderful "escape" in a sense from the turmoil of the world, even for a brief time. Didn't want to put it down sure. It was totally encouraging with uplifting spiritual references sprinkled here and there, it showed how yet again All things work together for good ,to those that love God Romans 8:28 came to mind often as the verse What will it profit a man if he gains the whole world but loses his soul?.......I was feeling the "oh no/sadness" at one point (even though yes fictional! ha) but pleasantly surprised++ later on....Situations were explained neatly, the characters all likeable, a totally satisfying read indeed ! :) She is another author I will gladly read another book by . These years, I tend to give an author one chance so to speak...if I don't enjoy the first one, I probably won't bother to try again in all honestly, as there are galores of enticing books to be explored and life is short. Definitely recommendable....

I am loving this series. This one I really liked with the mysteries of both time lines and the connection between them. It had me guessing.

In the modern story Devyn is a wedding planner on a retired paddle boat, the Belle. After breaking off her engagement, being humiliated on social media, she is sticking to what she knows best and keeping a low profile. But when Chase Jones find her dancing on the deck, she cannot tell him fast enough she is not interested. But when a mystery about the Belle is what he brings her, she is all ears.

Hattie Louis grew up on the boat, even if it wasn't by her real father. She knows how to do everything on there. But when Jack Marshall becomes First Mate, Hattie becomes a little perturbed. Then she learns her life has been a lie to keep her safe.

I enjoyed both timelines, which is unusual because normally I like only one. The mysteries and action in both is what I liked best and those kept my interest.

Thank you to Netgalley and Barbour Publishing for this advanced copy.

Having enjoyed one other story in this Doors to the Past series, “Undercurrent of Secrets” by Rachel Scott McDaniel, new author to this reader was a pleasure to read. This story immediately captured my attention from beginning until the end. The author was skillful in developing well-rounded and life-like characters, while the plot flowed seamlessly throughout each chapter.

There are moments when dual timelines in stories are not my preference, however, the author did a wonderful job connecting both timelines and making it easy to follow throughout the book. The main characters, Hattie and Devyn were very likable protagonists. Their stories are heartfelt, touching and intricately expressed on every page. Each woman’s narrative highlights the tragic trials and hurts that these women endured from a perspective in the past and one in the present. Hattie and Devyn’s faith in God, whatever His Plan, enabled them to overcome the obstacles they had to face.

So far this year, I have had very few new authors where I have given them a high rating. This author was pleasingly impressive. An astonishingly historical Christian story full of faith and another in this series that was worth the read. Looking forward to continuing this series and highly recommend the read.

What an awesome job the author does of melding the past with the present, and she does keep you on your toes, with the past meeting the present!

I never expected how everything did turn out, and we are kept on the edge of our seats, not knowing if all will survive, and will evil prevail.

Wedding Coordinator Devyn Asbury doesn't expect how much her life is about to change again, when dashing Chase Jones comes aboard the old steamboat, and we are along for the bumpy ride.

This one will quickly become a page turner, and in the end you won't want it to finish!

'Undercurrent of Secrets' is an alluring, beautifully written, passionate dual-timeline—set against the backdrop of a legendary, historic steamboat—a century apart! A story replete with secrets and deceit in both past and present, I was drawn in immediately by the unique setting, charming, sigh-worthy heroes, and witty, feisty heroines.

What's better than one mysterious romance?...two enigmatic love stories! The author does an amazing, seamless job of intertwining both exciting time frames. I actually got goosebumps (which doesn't normally occur unless reading a suspense), at a poetic quote near the HEA conclusion and became quite misty-eyed as well. With many a twist and turn and a reoccurring theme of trusting God throughout...be sure to move this novel to the top of your wishlist!

I love split time novels but this one is exceptional. This is my first book by Ms. McDaniel and I was gobsmacked with both storylines. The stories intertwine flawlessly and left me wanting to read fast to find out answers and slowing down to savor. I loved the steamboat setting and Devyn and Chase are the perfect characters to uncover the secret behind the 1920’s photograph. I loved Hattie’s spunkiness and her story had me needing tissues. I can’t find all the right words to describe this book without spoilers so I will just say run and get this to put on the top of your TBR pile.

With her latest novel, Undercurrent of Secrets, Rachel Scott McDaniel makes waves in the world of split-time romance with two marvelously intertwined tales set one century apart on the Belle of St. Louis riverboat. The dreamy heroes and courageous heroines offer plenty of witty banter and moments to swoon over. While McDaniel’s talent for designing breath-stealing romance highlights the enchantment of the Belle, her instinct for creating page-turning suspense draws the reader along the shadowy riverbends and into the murky waters below. Be prepared to make room on your favorites shelf with this one!

“Floating between two shores had been my one anchor. My only constant. I didn’t know my true name, parents, birthplace, or anything else that gave substance to my identity. How could I step beyond all that I’d ever known? Journey past my only stability?”

This quote’s from Hattie’s point of view (the historical heroine) and I confess I didn't have too much trouble identifying with her struggles. While I wasn’t abandoned as an infant on the Louisville Wharf, I AM the BIGGEST loafer in the boundaries of my comfort zone. Stepping out into new territory doesn't come easily for me and yet, with this book that's exactly what I had to do.

~I've never written a split-time story. And that in itself scared me. Could I do it? Or would I fall on my face? This was the first time I had the contract BEFORE the story was written. No pressure or anything, right?!

~I never written first person POV. All my other stories are written third person and so this was an adjustment for me. While writing the historical timeline, I caught myself many times slipping back into my previous writing style.

~I never wrote a contemporary story. Okay, this one was more terrifying than I'd like to admit. But, I'm so used to writing historicals I was concerned I didn't have it in me to create a believable contemporary storyline.

Take ALL of these insecurities and add a world epidemic (Because 2020 was when I wrote this book) That was what I faced when writing this story. But sometimes it’s in these seasons of challenges where we grow the most. By God’s grace, I was able to finish on deadline (Actually a week before!) Now, this story is out of my hands and belongs to you, dear reader. We all know reading is subjective, and not every story will resonate with every reader. But I do hope this book reaches the ones who need gentle encouragement and the reminder that perfect love drives out fear.

(Also I’m totally marking this “Read” because I’ve read this thing a gazillion times 😂)

Romance, history, intrigue, and faith. What more could I ask for in a book? How about two stories with all of these elements, set in different eras, but ultimately linked together? Author Rachel Scott McDaniel includes all of this in her new dual timeline book, and her characters rank high on my list of all-time favorites, including the very best character of all, The Belle of Louisville. This famous riverboat is dear to all of us in Kentucky, and I love that McDaniel includes so much of its history in these stories.

McDaniel has written two swoon-worthy romances that touched my heart, and she's packed them with intrigue and questions. She kept me guessing until the very end, and I was amazed at the connection between Devyn, Chase, Hattie, and Jack! Undercurrent of Secrets is a captivating dual timeline novel that will totally satisfy fans of both historical and contemporary Christian romance. Five stars for sure, but I would give it more if I could!

This was a beautiful story. I loved that it was set on a steam boat.

Also, I would like to say when it comes to dual timeline novels, I almost always like one more than the other. This one was not the case! I loved Hattie and Devyn's characters so much!

I did catch some of the plot twists, but not all of them, so the author got me on a few. I did find some of the story a little slow paced, but overall a wonderful story that I would probably read again in the future.

Ooooh so. I might have just discovered that this is #4 in a series. BUT. I have already read two of them! Woo hoo! (Allison Pittman's The Lady in Residence and Pepper Basham's Hope Between the Pages, if you were curious.) And, even better, each is a standalone read. So feel free to get cracking on those already released before this one comes out September 1. Your mission, should you choose to accept it ... :D

I had a gut feeling that Undercurrent of Secrets would be a fantastic read, because Rachel Scott McDaniel wrote it--and she’s an amazing author! Much to my delight, I wasn’t wrong. The read is everything I fully expected it to be!

I particularly loved the faith element woven throughout. We see characters grappling with faith and tough questions, asking God for wisdom during the process and not just after they’re already in a pickle. I would love to see more examples of this in Christian fiction!

The time-slip component was particularly well done; I often prefer one storyline over another, but McDaniel does an admirable (LOL, no pun intended--you’ll get it when you read it!) job at breathing life into both time periods and sets of characters. Now I would really like to see the real steamboat in person, too. I had no idea it really exists!

Fan-flipping-tastic read.

I received an eARC of the book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.

Wow! This was my second book by the author, and she’s quickly becoming a new favourite!

This delightful mystery kept me up late! I put it down for the night with a third left, only to pick it up 5 minutes later because of that plot twist! “I don’t need sleep, I need answers.” Totally worth it.

The overlap between the two timelines was amazing, and the mystery kept me hooked! Riverboat life wasn’t something I was super familiar with, so it was fascinating to learn more about it!

And the characters! Devyn & Chase and Hattie & Jack were the sweetest! The meet-cutes were utterly hilarious & I loved watching both couples grow in friendship and eventually romance, which was precious. And a shoutout to Mitch—I will never not love kind & protective big brothers!

Lastly, I loved the themes of finding identity in more than who you are or what you do—but instead in Jesus.

Definitely recommend!

Sigh. I adored this story!! The dual timelines were fantastic and worked together perfectly to weave a compelling mystery and swoon worthy romance with a perfect ending. This is definitely going to be a favorite 2021 read for me as well as one for my keeper shelf. This is an utterly charming story that you don't want to miss!

I received an ebook copy of this book for review. I purchased my own paper copy by choice and was not required to post a positive review. All thoughts are my own.

A dual timeline story with mystery and sweet romance. It was wonderfully written, sprinkled with tiny clues that lead to a satisfying ending.
