An ancient Persian relic. A message etched in stone. A deadly quest across the globe to reveal the forbidden truth.

Recovering ancient relics for the Italian mob can be deadly. When Harry Fox narrowly outwits a thieving artifacts dealer to escape with his life, he quickly discovers he came away with more than he bargained for. The stone tablet with a strange tale etched on it tells of lost knowledge from the cradle of civilization - the ancient Persian Empire.

When the lure of lost treasure proves too great, Harry launches himself into an expedition unlike any the world has ever seen. As he races across oceans unraveling the truth behind King Xerxes opaque story of power and greed, Harry quickly discovers he is not the only one chasing a long-buried secret which stretches back thousands of years and ties to the father of medicine - Hippocrates.

Harry is forced to sidestep a shadowy pharmaceutical company's private security force while staying one step ahead of American and Egyptian authorities, all while unraveling a mystery which has confounded mankind for millennia.

If Harry Fox thought hunting artifacts for the mob was dangerous, he has no idea what's in store as he hurtles toward disaster to uncover the truth behind the Emerald Tablet.

The Emerald Tablet by Andrew Clawson is the second book in the Harry Fox archaeological thriller series, where ancient history meets modern adventure. This novel follows Harry Fox, a Pakistani-American historian who works as an artifact hunter for the Italian mob. As he uncovers ancient secrets, he encounters thrilling challenges that could change our understanding of history.

The MacGuffin: The Emerald Tablet
At the heart of the story is the discovery of a mysterious stone tablet with strange writings. This tablet is connected to ancient Persian knowledge and the legendary King Xerxes, suggesting that it holds lost wisdom that could be significant. It also relates to Hippocrates, who is known as the father of medicine, highlighting its potential importance in linking old ideas with new scientific discoveries.

Throughout the series, while new characters and situations arise, familiar faces return to create a rich story. Harry Fox is the main character, and his complicated background and changing motivations keep readers engaged. Some important characters include:

Joey Morello: An Italian mob insider and son of a crime boss who funds Harry's treasure hunts in exchange for valuable artifacts.

Sara Hamed: An archaeologist who sometimes has a romantic connection with Harry. She provides expert knowledge and emotional support but often questions his unorthodox methods.

Special Agent Nora Doyle: Member of the Antiquities Trafficking Unit. A member of a government team focused on stopping the illegal trade of ancient artifacts. She teams up with Harry to recover stolen items and keeps an eye on his risky behavior.

Rose Leroux: A dealer in New York City who connects buyers to trafficked antiquities, playing a key role in the underground market.

Professor Manan Khalidi: An expert who authenticates artifacts for Rose, helping to confirm their historical significance and value.

Stefan Rudovic: Harry's main rival, a ruthless relic hunter associated with an Albanian crime family who often competes with Harry for the same artifacts but uses violent methods.

The plot kicks off when Harry narrowly escapes a dangerous encounter with a dishonest artifact dealer and comes into possession of the intriguing stone tablet. This discovery sends him on an adventurous journey around the globe as he seeks to uncover its origins and hidden secrets. Along the way, Harry discovers connections to the ancient Persian Empire and finds himself in a story involving King Xerxes. His mission is filled with peril, as he dodges a secretive pharmaceutical company's private security and faces investigations from American and Egyptian authorities.

Andrew Clawson's writing in "The Emerald Tablet" skillfully combines historical facts with fast-paced action, making the story exciting and engaging. He effectively integrates complex historical ideas into a thrilling narrative. Clawson's depiction of Harry Fox is particularly captivating, as the character balances his scholarly interests with the morally complex world around him. Harry's growth throughout the series adds emotional depth to the story.

What did I like about this book? This was a solid adventure book similar to Indiana Jones or Dirk Pitt type books. The main character Harry works for the main mob boss of New York just like his late father. He has made a good living "acquiring" rare artifacts for "collecting" over the years. So unlike Indy or Dirk our protagonist is more of a anti-hero. There was a good build up from the beginning allowing time to understand the plot, characters, and to get a little peek at Harry's motivation and even maybe doubts. The prose was easy to read and there was no extra violence or sex for violence/sex's sake. This allows some young readers to enjoy this book without parents/guardians worrying they may be reading something they may not be ready for.
What didn't I like about this book? Overall, I enjoyed this book and plan to read more books by this author. There were spots in the book I did have to turn off my skeptical mind and just try to enjoy the overall story. But they did not distract me enough to cause me to put the book down and stop reading it.
Who would I recommend this book to? I feel young adult, people you enjoy good adventure stories especially with a little history thrown in to spicy it up.

The Emerald Tablet brings Harry back on an exciting new adventure with lots of action. As Harry tries to get to the bottom of the Emerald Tablet mystery, I was happy to see Sara being a part of the adventure. I am hoping too that we have not seen the last of Nora. Make sure you have time to read this book as it is hard to put down once you start it.

I always like reading the Author’s Note at the end as we learn that real events inspired portions of this fictional book.

As part of the Advanced Reading Team, I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This author blends my love of history, archaeology and adventure into an excellent read. Looking forward to the third book in the series especially after reading the excerpt from it at the end of this book.

Stupidity wearing a fancy dress costume of intelligence.

The entire storyline only exists because it's moved forward by stupidity. That's the problem with these types of novels, to make it work it takes a lot of research and knowledge, then a lot of creative storytelling. A lot of people have one or the other, few can do both to the high standard that it requires to pull off this kind of writing. I couldn't suspend my disbelief in unlikely events, stupid people that are supposed to be smart and just the general way of getting from one scenario to the next.

Persia 358 BC: Artaxerxes II is dying and an old friend, the physician Nebrus has finally arrived with a new, but dangerous elixir.

During a failed artifact sale in Athens, Harry learns information about his dad’s murder, plus a stone tablet with Old Persian writing on it. Using this information, and his recent contact with Professor of Egyptology Sara Hamed who recognized his father’s amulet, Harry digs into his father’s murder. He also uncovers a dangerous Persian mystery that leads him on a multi-national journey to a king’s tomb.

Footnote:1) The ending reminds me of an Indiana Jones movie.

Fave scenes: Harry’s meeting with Professor Khalidi, the old lady with the shotgun and Joey’s gift to Harry.

3.5 Stars. Emerald Tablet is essentially a series of chase scenes, where you have a variety of individuals and groups chasing after Harry Fox and a mysterious tablet. Harry, meanwhile, is trying to decipher the symbols contained in the tablet that former Persian empire leader, Xerxes, hid which promised potential medical miracles. He is doing this for both himself and a major NYC mob leader, who sees big dollars in the ancient artifact. Others pursuing this artifact see big dollars from the information contained within.

Worthy of a Film,

A magical piece of writing, this story has you gripped from the first page. The journey throughout is fast and exciting and I feel the reader will not want to put it down. The descriptions of people and places transport you into this story too, I found myself holding my breath and willing them to run, run, come on before it’s too late.
Love the story, exceptional writing and well worthy of a 5 start rating.

Page Turner

Harry acquires a tablet during a buy gone wrong. The tablet starts a search for 2 more. While Harry is globe trotting with Sarah and Nora looking for the tablets while being followed by a team hired by someone with mega cash, the Morrelo's are being threatened by a rival family. This story is one interesting, exciting thing after the other. A real page turner. Loved every minute of it. Also love the author notes! Great job. Thank you. Can't wait to start Book 3

Another Great Thriller!

Andrew Clawson has created another great book featuring the irrepressible Harry Fox, finder of precious antiquities. With more twists and turns than Pan's Labyrinth, this book jumps from New York's Brooklyn borough to Greece, Egypt, Iran with some breathtaking episodes worthy of a Tom Cruise movie! Read the book (and read the 1st book if you haven't yet done so). You'll thank me for recommending it! A+ Bravo!

Written like a knock-off Indian Jones movie, this book lurches from action scene to chase scene and then back again in a cycle that lacks actual character development or real logical plotting. Silly throwaway nonsense, it may be, but if you can suspend disbelief long enough and don't want high literature, there is something oddly interesting buried in this book like a fabled green tablet lost to history.

Satisfying second entry in the Harry Fox series. Not quite as good as the first but still quite enjoyable. Surprises abound and more than once I was caught off guard so kudos for that. The artifact wasn't all that exciting but it sufficed. Looking forward to the next entry as there were several loose ends that I'm curious to see how the author ties them up.

Book 1 was great but this is even better! Adventure stories with dangers around every corner and ancient civilization and artifacts just made this even better! This story brings the mystery and adventure right to you, so much so you can’t wait to turn the next page!

Alliances are necessary when in the artifacts trade

this book is very much like Indiana Jones in its treasure hunting scenes. the characters are contemporary and believable, friends and foes. even a by standard proves a help to Harry, and he is just plain lucky. I like the strong smart women, too.

Well Harry Fox nearly has it all. Intelligence, good looks and the protection of the most influential mob in the city.....just as his Father used to. But his Father is dead and has left Harry an amulet; very tantalising. As a hunter of artefacts, Harry knows this is no ordinary amulet. But before he can find out more, he has to complete the tasks his Boss has set him. Tasks that others are interested in and will do anything to get in his way and claim the treasures he seeks. A thrilling read with Harry using every trick at his disposal in order to survive and succeed.
