Focusing on so much more than plastic pollution, this ahead-of-the curve book exposes the extensive damage being done to the oceans that most of us don’t know about, and what simple, everyday changes we can make to help protect our seas.
When we think about climate change, our first thoughts are often of burning rainforests, cities filled with smog, and mammals teetering on the brink of extinction. But what about the effects of our actions off-land? What is really going on out of sight below the surface of the waves? And what more can we do beyond just reducing our plastic usage?
This book is a necessary call to act and educate ourselves on the damage human activity is having on our seas, and a guide to how you can help stop it, whether you live on the coastline or hundreds of miles from the ocean.
Shocking but enlightening, it illustrates exactly what the problems are, how they impact the ocean, why it is so important to keep our oceans healthy for our own benefit, and what we can do individually and collectively to help save our seas.
Oceans cover over 70% of our planet and provide us with more life support than we can comprehend. Learn how to be an ocean hero every day, and do your part to love and protect our planet before it is too late…
Tessa Wardley is an environmental professional and serial mini-adventurer.
With an academic background in Marine and Freshwater Biology Tessa has worked for the UK’s Environment Agency, in global water environmental consultancy and is currently employed by the UK’s Department of the Environment (Defra).
Getting into the outdoors for adventures to feed the soul has always been a major driver in Tessa’s life. Tessa lives in the belief that every new day and every new place is an opportunity to lace up and run or jump in and swim; to explore places through new paths and trails - she would never consider packing a bag without including running shoes and swimming costume. Tessa gets into the outdoors whenever and wherever she can and regularly competes in adventure races and open water swimming events reaching deep into the wilderness areas of the UK.
Tessa lives with her husband, four children and large, hairy, daft dog who accompany her and add to the mini-adventures of life; happily they also subscribe to the importance of nature to their health and wellbeing.
When not actively involved in outdoor adventures, working or hanging out with her family, Tessa is writing books inspiring others to engage with the natural world for their health and wellbeing and the wellbeing of our planet. Her books include: The River Book, The Woodland Book, The Countryside Book, The Mindful Art of Wild Swimming and Mindful Thoughts for Runners.
Thank you, Quarto Publishing Group Ivy Press, for the advance reading copy.
The book is well packed with upto date information regarding pollution caused by plastics, what we can do about it both indoors and outdoors. The information is detailed and the illustrations are basic. However, considering the target audience I would have loved the book more if the presentation was a bit fun with less sentences arranged here and there. Otherwise it looks like a textbook while reading with the kids.
I received a temporary digital copy of this book from the publisher via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This call-to-action handbook is perfect for young environmentalists and thalassophiles (ocean lovers).
The Ocean Hero Handbook is an intriguing nonfiction book with seven chapters that present specific issues that the ocean faces and then shares what we can do to change the issue and why it is important for us to do so. The chapters, which cover an array of issues each, includes 'indoor', 'outdoor', 'transport', 'on holiday', 'at work', 'food & shopping', and 'clothes'.
Learn how to reduce your carbon footprint and cut back on single-use plastics. Find alternatives to waste products that clog up our waterways, learn how to reduce carbon emissions, and cut back on harmful chemicals. Learn about what is destroying our land, coastlines, and waterways, and how they directly affect the ocean and the ecosystems of all the above. There's a plethora of topics from all walks of life on this planet, all aimed at helping readers be the heroes and heroines that the ocean is desperately in need of.
If you'd like to learn more about how we impact the earth and oceans and what you can do to make a difference, this is a great choice. I recommend it to middle-grade age readers and older.
All I can say is brava to Tessa Wardley and Melanie!
This book is incredibly valuable and I'm grateful for how well it was executed. It is clearly organized with thoughtful fluidity and structure, infused with concise messaging and heartstring pulling graphics.
As a big fan of Melanie Johnsson (the illustrator) and as someone who is a creative advisor/graphic designer for a marine science company tackling microplastic pollution, I could not be more excited for the publication of this book!

Thank you Net Galley and Quarto Publishing Group - Ivy Press for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
Charming design, but some of the information could be organized better, ex. some things are defined/explained after they have been mentioned a few times already.
Shows that everything in our world is interconnected and emphasizes many opportunities to take action for ocean health, but like other consumer-driven actions, requires more research in most cases (ex. how to find a clothing brand, fish farm, ecotourism company that isn't simply greenwashing).
After viewing the “Blue Paradox” exhibit at Chicago’s Museum of Science & Industry, I picked this book up to help me put some action to the information swirling in my mind. It has been a helpful way to continue to let the shocking state of our world sink in and also start identifying actionable ways I can adjust my behaviors to have a positive impact on our oceans and changing climate.
If you need a place to start, this is a great one!
