Story Impressions –
Discovery of the Five Senses is an outstanding young adult superhero fantasy adventure I couldn’t put down. It truly is an edge-of-your-seat adventure I couldn’t stop reading. The plot moves at a quick pace with a fair share of action scenes to whet the appetite of any reader. The world-building is second to none, meaning it pulls the reader in and doesn’t let go until the last page. K.N. Smith is a gifted writer whose imagination oozes from every page. The descriptive narration is intricate with just the right amount of detail without overloading the reader’s senses. The five main characters, though, are what make this an unputdownable read. I connected with each character in a different way and was heavily invested in their journey. I’ve not read many fantasy books that surprise me but this one did. An original superhero fantasy to be savored.
Narrator’s overall voice –
Glenn Steinbaum’s voice has an individuality all its own but when it employs the various character voices, it takes on each character with ease. I thoroughly adored his voice.
Does the narrator fit the characters?
Yes, Glenn Steinbaum fits the characters with a youthful tone. I’m astonished at how well he evokes teens. It’s not an easy thing to do. Great job.

Glenn Steinbaum has an informal reading style but with enough twists and turns to keep the listener mesmerized.

Glenn Steinbaum has an inherent ability to draw a listener/reader in without any effort. He takes what is one of the most creative stories I’ve ever read and creates a masterpiece. The scenes are so well narrated, I had to stop what I was doing to concentrate on the story.

This is a decidedly different YA novel written by a talented wordsmith whose lyrical prose paints pictures in the imagination of the reader. I admit that I did get confused over some of the characters originally but not for long as each teen has his own enhanced sense which helps to differentiate them. To me it was a bit like team superman to the rescue as an alien energy source gives the boys heightened awareness and 'kick ass' fighting skills. As they come into their powers they have to come to terms with the changes, find out more about what they mean and learn their new destinies whilst still going to school and trying to keep things hidden from their families and other friends. Coping with homework and lack of sleep is going to be a real problem!
It is a fast paced story with a full range of characters, diverse events and plenty of challenges. I particularly liked twelve year old Mason Parker as he endeavours to keep his brother, Jordan, safe - even though Jordan is, unknown to Mason, actually one of the super heroes! As family history and past history is revealed there are plenty of dilemmas to be faced as the boys develop a greater awareness of the impact of their new skills and abilities on themselves, their friends and their families. How will their families react when they discover what has happened to these teens? Certainly not as you'd imagine! Danville Heights is your idealistic small American town. There is no crime, no traffic and everyone loves the local high school football team, The Chargers. One day five kids from Danville Heights: Jordan, Rhee, Kinsu, Chase and Alex are exposed to a mysterious energy in an open field and are left with extremely heightened senses. Life changes for the boys and they decide to use their new senses to fight evil in the neighboring town and mirror opposite of Danville Heights called Sandry Lake.
The Urban Boys by K.N. Smith is a YA paranormal action adventure novel about a group of kids whose lives start to change and they are left with a series of choices. I loved how Danville Heights seem to represent all that was good and Sandry Lake was the opposite. When the kids figure out their powers they have to go to Sandry Lake to prove themselves. You could say that this is a coming of age novel with an exciting story.
This book was a mixed bag for me, I enjoyed the story and how everything in their world is described but the characters didn’t feel real to me. All of the characters including the bad ones seemed way to nice, from the way they spoke to the way they thought. As I read I thought to myself that I don’t think kids act that way and the town of Danville Heights seems to perfect.
That being said this book is still a good read, the way it’s written is impressive. Reading K.N. Smith’s description of the world her characters live in is like an artist painting a classical masterpiece. I’ve never read a book quite like this one where every situation is seen in vivid detail. This book comes across as a long piece of poetry with a good message about the importance of loyalty, friendship and responsibility.
The Urban Boys is a book that young audiences will love. Its different then a lot of the YA novels that I read because this book reads like a painting. Also while reading this I thought this was a good book for young writers to read because it’s a great example of how to write beautiful prose. The concept behind this book is a fabulous one and it looks like there will be a sequel in the future. I’ll be happy to see what K.N. Smith comes up with in her next book.

You can tell that this aurhor put a lot of time into planning this book! It was one of the most well put together books I've ever read! The character and setting were described in a way I felt like I was there in the book with them. The story never lost my attention and was quite intense at times. It was a really emotional book and I wanted the boys to be alright and to come out on top. It was quite a journey that I couldn't stop reading it. I think sometimes YA books are better than adult book, and this is one of them!!

Every once in a while, I get the urge to read outside my comfort genre. This time, that urge came in the form of The Urban Boys: Discovery of the Five Senses. I’ve read books with a similar hook, but not quite like this. I really enjoyed this one, but I also have a few teeny problems with it as well. This is like the movies Chronicle and Sky High had a baby. A group of teen boys with powers? How can this not be cool?
WHAT I LIKED
-the super cool enhancement to the senses that, ultimately, came with a price. The way the boys got heightened senses was a little cliche’, but I didn’t let that little bit deter me from continuing.
-the way that I was able to visualize each scene, and totally seeing it on the big screen. Or, at the very least, on my TV screen. The author does a great job with descriptions.
-can we rejoice for a moment that the main characters are boys? Because, yeah, really grateful for that. In a way it makes sense (no pun intended). Not that girls can’t get hit with super powers, but I like not having to be inside a bunch of teen girls’ minds.
-I love the overall setup to this whole story. We get to see and feel the change in these characters. They went from being students at DH High School, to saviors of Sandry Lake. I like how the author divided the 2 seemingly different settings. I don’t think any other way would have worked for the way the story progresses.
WHAT I DIDN’T LIKE
I was having a hard time distinguishing between the many voices. They all had something to say, but it was a little disorienting. You guys know how I have problems with POVs!
-I’m a pace kind of reader. I like my action to be fast and swift. There were points (several points) that slowed down throughout.
-I am all for well written words, but the writing got a little heavy-handed. I felt, at times, like this is not a YA adventure book. I’m not sure what the author was aiming for on that angle. I’m pretty sure, adults will love this without all the fancy dialogue.
-It wasn’t long enough. The ending felt rushed, but I can say that it ended well. I would have liked for a bigger finale with this one.
RECOMMEND?
Totally! The Urban Boys is very engaging. No matter the problems I had with it, I can really see myself reading more of this story. It’s very YA friendly, but if you love some adventure and quirky characters – with a side of evil villain, this book will surely keep you engrossed. This will definitely appeal to teen boys. I think this is a great book to thrust upon the male high school population.

The first thing that caught my attention on this book was the theme--five boys, five senses and superpower adventure against an evil almost impossible to defeat. The surmise promises to be a winning mix, and it was.
The author does a terrific job in bringing the five teenage boys to life. Each one is given an equal amount of detail and attention. None of the five stand out more than the other, which reflects well when as it grow clear how much their bond of friendship carries them through. I loved the real life dialogue and especially the normal settings and situations the boys find themselves in during the first half of the book. It grounds them well, making it easy for readers to connect with them before the more amazing part of the tale takes flight. I did have a little trouble keeping the five apart, but since they always worked together, the general mix worked just as well.
The boys aren't the only characters in this story, but rather their siblings, friends, teachers and others also join in and sometimes briefly take over the stage. The chapters are broken down into shorter sections, many of these changing with the point of view of the characters (but not always). This constant shift made for great glimpses into different scenes and thoughts, but sometimes felt jolting and unnecessary. There's a definite narrative voice through the entire thing, which makes sure everything stays connected and clear. This also added some distance to the characters and events, which gave it more of a telling feel.
Although there are moments where things are described in more detail than I prefer, other moments have the action racing full of tension straight ahead. The 'fight' scenes are extremely well done, capturing the moment until I was even holding my breath. The evil hangs deliciously in the shadows, drawing closer and more dangerous as the story progresses, ensuring that the tension mounts until the very last page.
As to the writing, it's a bit different than many novels in this genre--either one likes it or they don't. While the dialogue and 'active' scenes with the boys are a true delight, other sections are written with an almost forced literary flare. I'm not a huge fan of this style, especially in literature targeted at younger audiences, and then (on top of that) boys. This was a huge stumbling block for me and had me skipping paragraphs at a time. But I was still more than happy to dive right back in when things got moving along again.
Despite the literary feel really not being my thing, there are many great things packed in these pages which shouldn't be ignored. The friendship between the boys is inspiring, their fight is heroic and the action scenes kept me at the edge of my seat. Even the characters which appear more in the shadows had a lovely chill about them and were masterfully done.

She navigates readers through a narrative that shifts between the protagonists’ ordinary life at Danville Heights High school to the extraordinary world that is Sandry Lake. Here, corruption and crime manifest in mysterious and evil ways. Through a series of confrontations, where the central characters not only wrestle with the ‘other’ beyond themselves, they soon discover that they must overcome a battle that is closer to their hearts than they realize. Strange happenings, mysterious disappearances, and enthralling escapades encourage readers to delve into the depths of the pages without looking back.
It can be challenging to source a resource that both entices young adults to read and has age-appropriate content. Smith orchestrates a book that ticks all of the boxes. The Urban Boys is a non-cursing, no sex, no drugs, no guns, action-adventure/ paranormal novel. Remarkably, Smith’s articulate word imagery is all that is needed to transport readers to a mysterious paranormal world where good and evil collide and the future of Danville is on death’s door.
While the genre is action-adventure, touching on the paranormal, the themes are universal. Power, community, loyalty, honesty, fear, risk-taking and comradeship run through the veins of this piece. Using these themes, Smith entices her readers to consider their reactions to these concepts in their own lives, making the text relevant and meaningful to young adults and adult readers alike.
Smith’s novel is like a dose of good coffee; tempting, enlivening, smooth, powerful, addictive, occasionally bitter but ultimately warm. However, I must warn you - this book should come with a warning:
“Warning: do not begin reading this novel unless you have time to read it all in one satisfying hit. “
I implore you to put your phone down, turn off the television, and close the laptop lid. Make the time to connect with this piece of literary prowess. You will not regret it. I dare you. What will it take for you to walk on the dark side?

Review: I liked this book for the way it's written and for the plot but maybe the genre is not too much for me. Anyway I give it a 7 out of 10 => 4 out of 5 on goodreads because I like action and I know it's a very good book. The main characters are Jordan, Rhee, Kinsu, Chase, and Alex some high school friends that after an accident they get powers so they start to battle the evils bonded together with the powers that are the five senses (one for each). I liked the character development, thematics and the way you can easily view each scene thanks to the detailed descriptions! I didn't like as well the difference between the POVs because I had some problems to distinguish them and it slowed down sometimes.

Boys like Brothers – A review of the book ‘The Urban Boys’

Author K.N. Smith’s ‘The Urban Boys: Discovery of the Five Senses’ is a novel that explores the age old fight between good and evil in a modern, urban setting. Two distinct societies exist within the story, one a fairytale-ish little town filled with honest and hardworking individuals while the neighboring town is a dark dystopian world where petty crime and crime-lords reign supreme. A forest preserve situated between these two worlds contains a mysterious energy source, one which alters and heightens people’s senses. When a group of people from these two strikingly different worlds come into contact with this energy source, an epic melee between good & evil ensues.
K.N. Smith has at her disposal a lyrical prose that describes the environment and the characters in such fine (and magical) detail that you can’t help but fall in love with the world she has created. All the characters get introduced into the narrative early on and only then does the plot arc really kick in. Their introduction has a cinematic feel to it and you end up making a personal connect with each of the protagonists.
The five teenage heroes have an equal role to play in the proceedings and their superpowers and fighting skills are evenly matched. But it’s their unique backstories that’s going to help readers choose their favorite hero from the group. This is a good fix for a book that’s primarily aimed at younger audiences. Jordan, Rhee, Kinsu, Chase and Alex are more or less well developed characters, but it’s the fine dialogues they mouth that helps in showing-off their deep set friendship and brotherly love for each other.
All said and done, ‘The Urban Boys’ offers plenty of life lessons that are arranged in a subtle manner throughout the narrative. Importance of family ties, friendship, honesty, and staying true to yourself are all touched upon in this adventure story. The book is much more than about teenage boys with super powers fighting ruffians and thugs, it persuades each person to do good so that evil can be kept away from the collective.

A captivating and poetic tale of mystery, fantasy, and reality tied together by action
This is the first book by K.N. Smith that I have read and I’m pleased to see that it’s the first in a series because I was amazed at the development of the story, the subtext, and the characters and I am interested to see how it all progresses.
What makes this book particularly fascinating is the manner in which the community in which the characters exist is itself a living, conscious entity. In this respect, the book has a strong fantasy element to it. Yet, contrasted against the fantastical elements is a realism which pits the idyllic against the criminal and the fantasy against grim reality.
There is a wonderful interplay of disparate, contrasting elements which play out on two levels: within the minds of the characters and within the world surrounding them. The writer makes great use of backstories and subtext to lend depth, subtlety, and mystery to the unfolding of the story as it vacillates from surreality to reality. This constant interplay is echoed in the lives of the characters as they struggle to balance their newfound powers with the need to maintain life on a mundane level.
Additionally, the writer introduces poetic elements into the narrative, placing the story into a mythical context, each of the characters’ actions being a response to Fate as they struggle to reach a balance between the demands of normalcy and the pull of destiny. The entire story is neatly woven together in an unpredictable manner and is driven by well executed action sequences, intriguing backstories, and dialogue which lend believably and relatability to the characters and situations.
I would recommend this book to readers of fantasy, mystery, and even fans of certain kinds of comic books which explore how the introduction of new powers or abilities put pressures upon those who acquire them to undergo intensive personal transformations in order to accommodate the responsibilities these entail. Five stars.

"The Urban Boys: Discovery of Five Senses” by K.N. Smith is a well written young adult paranormal novel. I have to say I liked that the boys did not get some sort of amazing, but too out there super power. Instead they each got heightened senses; I personally found this aspect interesting as it kept the book somewhat realistic and almost theoretically possible. I found the prologue to be confusing as it took place 20 years previously and it took a while for the prologue to make any sense to me. I liked how the author worked to develop all of the characters equally there was never a point where I felt like on some of the characters were fleshed out; I really could not pick a favorite character I liked Jordan, Rhee, Kinsu, Chase, and Alex all equally. I greatly enjoyed the action oriented story line and the fast pace that came with it. At the beginning I was concerned that this was going to be one of those slow paced books the describe everything in way too much detail, but the author moved the story line along at a fast and steady pace which kept me interesting in both the plot and the characters. The book truly exemplifies a battle between good and evil.

The Urban Boys is about five friends who through some mysterious energy source gain super senses that they then use for what they believe is the common good. I really like the premise as the senses they get are super charged versions of our actual senses; sight, sound, smell, taste and touch. What I really liked about that is it is actually relatable and something you can actually believe in being useful. I found it a lot more relatable than things like being able to read minds, telekinesis or super (unpractical) strength for example, this really helps you immerse into the story.
I don’t want to give too much of the story away but the boys use their new found powers to disrupt crime in a neighbouring city and along the way find themselves in all sorts of adventures. The book is aimed at young adults and is written perfectly for this group; there is more than enough action and suspense to make it really interesting, but, not so dark or surrounding more adult topics/themes to be inappropriate. The book has very good pacing and is very well written. If you have any young adults in your family I would more than recommend you grab them a copy of this book.

Urban Boys is one of those stories that will give you a lingering thought much like a certain food gives out a good aftertaste. Journeying from kids to teens to super is one of the things most want but can never achieve. The story of these five boys shows us the development, hardship, emotional, mental and physical baggage one has when undergoing this situation. A closer to actual reality type story than other teen science fiction in the market. Lavished by the great way the author writes the story as a storyteller, the novel gives great warmth and closeness to the characters. The rich way the scene and events are detailed makes us imagine as if we were there. The only thing I can think of which is the downside is the quickness of how they acquired the abilities they have. As a science lover and a lover of science fiction, I adore stories and explanation of their powers and how they came to be. Otherwise it's over-all a great story. Hope there is much to it in it's sequel.Kudos to K.N. Smith for a great start for a series.

Five teenage boys stumble upon a power source which heightens their senses and makes them super powered. These new abilities come in handy as they must use them to overcome the evil threatening their town. The characters were well developed, and I enjoyed reading about how they used their abilities. The dialogue was realistic and entertaining. I think the author has written a very enjoyable book for teens. I would recommend it.

I received this novel in exchange for an honest review. The Urban Boys: Discovery of the Five Senses by K.N. Smith is an exciting tale that packs a lot of adventure, suspense, and paranormal twists.I wasn’t sure what to expect, inside this story. But what I found was highly entertaining. It is here that readers will meet a group of boys who gain a superhero element. Their destiny is unknown to them and they must figure out how to handle their new power as well as the evil that lurks around them. Fighting evil is never easy, and these boys will be tested to their limits before they fight the evil that can destroy them all. The survival means that others will be safe and without them the evil may win…but the question is can they rise to the challenge and the changes they are faced with?
K.N. Smith has masterfully woven a story whose images comes off like vividly and engage readers like myself deeper into the enchanting plot. For me the story didn’t kick off until chapter two…there it felt solid and more like a journey through memory lane. Imagine a forest that is talked about constantly…you go to see it…and when you do…you experience dark things and see violence…like one young couple. An energy source lives within the forest, the place, that no one should be…but still some daringly enter on their own. The tale at first takes readers between places and introduces a variety of characters. One’s fascination…takes on a roller coaster ride. There is so much to see and find out before the dangerous journey ahead occurs. A battle between good versus evil is one theme that will forever attract readers in like honey to a bee. The Urban Boys…are five boys all in all. Each one has a unique sense that will help them fight against evil. Crime and peace sit side to side inside this intriguing read. This brilliantly well-written novel reminds me almost of The Great Gatsby where good and evil themes are also tied in… however, K.N. Smith’s fantasy adventure is a crossover novel. Readers of all ages can easily find something to enjoy within this title. I found The Urban Boys: Discovery of the Five Senses to offer a fantastic reading experience. The author’s writing beautifully depicted the scenery, and painted a wonderful picture in my mind of the world the story took place in. No detail was left to the imagination; seemingly unimportant factors of the setting were made beautiful and important, and while the story would have been fine without such detail, it made it that much more enjoyable to me as a reader.
One of my favorite things about this novel was the way the story was introduced to the audience. It began by simply describing the world, then slowly introducing you to characters. It perfectly built up the story, by giving you glimpses into their lives, before anything out of the ordinary began. They were simply going about their lives, shown to you as normal people, and then you see how their lives are changed. This was so great to me because it was the best way to show me something without telling me; instead of dropping the reader into the middle of the action and saying “Trust me, this has greatly affected them,” I witnessed the effects as they took place.
Not only did I love the setup, but the action itself. I found the synopsis very interesting, and the novel did more than hold up. What I expected to be an interesting read that would keep me busy was incredible enjoyable. I felt so connected to the story and interested in the outcome of the characters’ lives. Also, I’ve read many books that could fall into the same category or genre, but this novel was unique and always interesting. I didn’t feel like the whole thing was easy to predict, which is part of what kept me interested from beginning to end.
I would highly recommend this to any reader looking for something new, not only for its fantastic story, but also for the beautiful writing. It has so much to offer its readers, and its sure to live up to your expectations.

In Danville Heights, things are almost a perfect place. Then five boys are exposed to an energy that gives them heightened senses. The nearby town of Sandry Lake is almost the exact opposite of Danville Heights is being run by evil and corruption. The five boys are draw to Danville Heights to use their new super abilities to help fight the evil. But sneaking out at night to fight along with trying to have a normal teenage life of school and football starts putting pressure on the guys. Can the boys keep up this pace while trying to fulfill their destinies?
This story is about five guys that get superpowers and decide to fight evil. But it is not the glorified superhero that we normally thing about. They also have normal teenage lives and have to deal with the secrets, school work, lack of sleep, and doubts that everyone has to deal with. I will say that I really like reading about a couple guys for once, I need a little break from all the girls as a main character once in a while. I also liked all the action and fighting that the guys found themselves in.
There are a couple things that did get to me. Everything is really over described. I made reading a bit heavy. I would really have liked to find out more about this energy that changed the guys, it was barely glanced over but this is not a major issue for me. The one part that really got me was if my teenager was sneaking out to fight people and comes to me seriously injured I would throw such a fit. It kind of bothered me that the parents were ok with this.
Anyway, I do think the book was pretty good. It is the start of a series and these are usually a little shaky. But I think it was executed pretty well. I am definitely interested in reading the next book in the series. I would recommend checking out The Urban Boys.

I just finished Urban boys, and was amazed that I finished it within 2 days, even with obligations like work, and homework, I could not put the book down. From the very beginning it reminded me a lot of Smallville with the whole small town americana feel, and the charm that goes along with it. So much so that the whole town closes for a football game, that’s dedication! The story details the lives of 5 boys, who have been friends for quite some time, and are all connected, who end up developing their 5 senses in many ways, and put them to use in a special way. But with such a quaint charming town, there is bound to be some history, within the first few chapters we learn about the past, and how the boys stumble into their new destiny.
Very detailed, from the physical descriptions to, every aspect of the town, and even great backstory, you can tell Smith really went for it, and did her research to really go deep with these characters, once I got into the plot, it was more Hardy Boys meets, the Justice League, but with teenagers going through all the normal issues you would expect, High School, SAT’s, college, prep, girlfriends, curfews, homework, and saving your town, and beating up bad guys while you're at it. I love how she incorporates mystery with a bit of drama and a touch of action, and some ew factors, that really get a visceral reaction out of you, but keep you reading more, overall I think this is a great book for anyone from 12-99, and l am looking forward to the sequel!

Very detailed, from the physical descriptions to, every aspect of the town, and even great backstory, you can tell Smith really went for it, and did her research to really go deep with these characters, once I got into the plot, it was more Hardy Boys meets, the Justice League, but with teenagers going through all the normal issues you would expect, High School, SAT’s, college, prep, girlfriends, curfews, homework, and saving your town, and beating up bad guys while you're at it. I love how she incorporates mystery with a bit of drama and a touch of action, and some ew factors, that really get a visceral reaction out of you, but keep you reading more, overall I think this is a great book for anyone from 12-99, and l am looking forward to the sequel!

I just finished reading 'The Urban Boys: Discovery of Five Senses' by K.N. Smith , all I can say is, this is my kind of book. Fun, funny and with a great story line, this book is one you won’t want to miss. This book follows 5 teenage boys, who comes to know about a mysterious super power that made their senses extremely heightened. I bet that this story will make you wonder all the way and will keep you hooked from the first page and right through to the end. You will read about the journey of the teenage boys as they try to fight the evils after coming in contact with the super power. You will get to know how their life changes and how they encounter some various characters throughout, and how it changes their own perspectives on life.
To be honest this book has a lot to offer! I love to read books like 'The Urban Boys'.. where the story leaves you wanting more, turning it into your own personal saga, putting all those “what if” questions to work. The stories that surprise you, combining elements of mystery with pieces from modern day life. I believe this book is a perfect example that mysteries still have a lot to offer us.
And what is more beautiful than reading a book that only after one page the words leave the paper and start creating images in your mind? I highly recommend this book to everyone! Worth it.

First of all, the Urban Boys by K.N. Smith will prove how beautiful the English language is. I was compelled from the very beginning, drawn into the depth of the story with it's unique description. It made me realize my personal limitations of vocabulary. I am in awe.
After a huge win by the Danville Heights football team, a group of five best friends decide to enter into a forest that was forbidden. They encounter something they can't explain. With a bond deeper than friendship, they can sense each other, each having a sense heightened, and are drawn to the evil that is torturing the neighboring town Sandry Lake.
In this story, you learn history about each boy and I find that very important. It makes their character more real. You learn how close the boys are, and the loyalty they have for each other. There is a lot of mystery that gradually reveals throughout the story, just enough to keep you hooked. Crazy plot twists and action will keep you at the edge of your seat as the past and present collide.
The whole setting of the story felt so real. The trust the boys had with each other to blindly go where their senses pulled them was astounding with not understanding the why. With the beautiful words that seemed as smooth as glass, this fast paced novel is a must read. The creative descriptions need to be embraced by all.

The author skillfully breaths life into this young adult novel in a mature way that makes it not only relatable to its intended audience, but a good read for anyone interested.
With an air of mystery embedded into the story from its inception, the author draws you into the world of her characters and the obstacles they have to overcome in their lives as well as their relationships with each other. It’s poetic descriptions make you feel enveloped in its ethereal setting as these characters deal with the supernatural event that changes their lives.
In an environment that isn’t typically written about, the book has a fresh perspective and different feel than most young adult books I have encountered as the author takes a bold approach. Sometimes too much detail can cause a reader to lose interest, but she does so in a way that paints the picture she has created in a beautiful and unexpected way.
I would definitely recommend this book, not only for young adults but for any reader interested in an adventurous and unique novel.

Just when you thought all the great stories have been already written, The Urban Boys' comes along and sweeps you off your feet. It only takes one glance at the cover and the outstanding titles and you know that this is not your ordinary story book. K.N. Smith, has given birth to a paranormal featuring 5 teenage boys, super source of energy, each one with different character, each of who will excite your imagination and make you feel you are reading a real mystery. The words start to dance in front of your eyes and you find yourself in the heart of instance, feeling what the protagonists are feeling.
Along with great pacing and flawless prose, the scenes are excellently depicted and all the elements are high from start to finish. Overall its worth a read, there are enough loose ends dangling at the conclusion for readers to crave a follow-up. In other words, a cracking read. Thumbs up!

This is a tale of five teenage boys that find themselves torn away from their normal lives and come to realize they have each have superpowers. These “superpower” are really their senses, just extremely heightened—Which comes in handy when evil comes lurking into their town.
I loved how each scene was portrayed. I could really visualize all that was happening and I really appreciated that, because not many authors have a knack for that. From the first page, I was drawn into the book and finished it in no time because I had trouble putting it down!
K.N Smith has a way with words that will have you sucked in and not wanting the story to end. With lyrical prose and a surreal setting, K.N Smith knows how to twist and turn words into beautiful crafted sentences. ‘The Urban Boys: Discovery of the Five Senses’ is a must-read if you’re a fan of action and adventure!

I found "The Urban Boys" to be very entertaining and exciting throughout most of the scenes, but I also must note that there’s some prominent themes that express some strong values (that are blended into the adventurous tone of the read excellent) that I’m sure many others, as I have, can relate to. This is a major influence of why I enjoyed the book so much.
What stood out to me the most about this read though besides the aforementioned and the vivid writing style, is definitely how well-constructed each of the main characters are. They all have a very complex nature and a strong foundation to each of their personalities, and as well as this, they each have their own defining flaws that contrast with their strengths – which, in turn, makes them seem quite realistic and dynamic. Overall, I am quite impressed with author K.N. Smith and hope to see more in the future.

Five boys, best friends in their last years of high school, enter the woods after an epic football game. They do not emerge the same as they entered. Something has changed them, heightening one of the five senses for each teen. They are connected like never before, united by fate to fight the forces of evil. But even fate and brotherhood may not be able to keep them together under the mounting stress and danger.
The Urban Boys was interesting. It focused on the friendship of the boys more than on the dangers they faced. It went into detail about their friendships with each other and their relationships within their families, including information about some tragic events in some of their lives. I enjoyed seeing the camaraderie they shared.
The danger was a part of their lives though. An unnatural force gave them their abilities and called them to their heroic duties every night. Fate was often referenced. Each evening the boys traveled to the neighboring city, which reminded me of Gotham City as it was dark, creepy, and overrun with evil forces. They battled the thugs in the city in order to rescue the few helpless citizens that remained. As the story progressed, everything began to mount to a final, epic battle that did not disappoint.
In contrast, the small town the boys lived in was picture perfect. Everyone knew everyone else and there was virtually no crime. It seemed like a wonderful place to live. The author went into great detail describing parts of it, especially the mysterious forest.
In fact, the author was extremely descriptive throughout the novel. Every sentence was flowery and filled with a myriad of words to describe everything in detail. The first few chapters, too, were spent merely in descriptions of each of the five boys’ families – their parents’ and siblings ages, careers, and relationships with the main characters. The book was slow to begin with and had so much description as to be irritating at times. I also think the characters could have been developed a little better. But I still enjoyed the story, the setting, and the friendships.
I would recommend this book to teens who enjoy superhero-type stories.

The Urban Boys: Discovery of the Five Senses is a thrilling, must-read book for all YA fans. K.N. Smith is a masterful storyteller, and her writing is incredible. She artistically uses the best possible descriptors for each scene and emotion that she paints brilliantly for the mind's eye. At the same time, she is able to keep the story and characters believable. I enjoyed the richness and diversity of the characters.
It's been a long time since I was this absorbed in a novel. I tried to put it down to go about my daily life, but my mind kept drifting back to thinking about the characters as if they were friends of mine, and wondering what would happen next. This is definitely a page turner and worth every minute spent reading it.

The Urban Boys is an inviting story of five teen boys in the small town of Danville Heights. These teen boys, through a small accident, acquire new powers and must fight Druth in the dim town of Sandy Lake. Their story is exciting and spellbinding. It will have you turning page after page at one hour past your bedtime. The Urban Boys is a great read for almost anyone, from teens to young adults to older adults. The writing is superb. I feel like I've known Danville Heights my whole life and grew up there. The adventures are something that we long for, and it's great to live them through this riveting read. I cannot wait to read more about Alex, Jordan, Kinsu, Rhee, and Chase as they struggle to acknowledge their present normal life while fighting the dark forces. I really enjoyed this book more than I expected to! It is part sci/fi part dystopian. It leaves you wondering, “Could this be our future?”
Evil has taken hold of the town next to where the “Urban Boys” live. They know it’s a bad place to be, but they don’t live there….why think about it? One night changes that. The boys have just won the big game when they decide to take a walk. That walk turns out to be life changing. They wake up the next morning with powers they never had before…sort of like Spiderman getting bitten by the spider! And somehow, that town next to them is their destiny. They start waking in the middle of the night to fight the evil that has taken over.
I think the characters in the book were well written and the story is really exciting. I definitely think sci/fi readers would love this book.
