This is book two of the Fanged After Forty series and follows the main character Hailey (Hails) Whitfield as she adjusts to her vampire lifestyle, after picking in the wrong person to try and apprehend on her first skip chase case, instead getting bitten by a vampire. She only survived her death because her neighbour across the street, Jax (Jaxon) is kind of a biggie in the vampire world in America, and he brought her back as a vampire, even though it is against the vampire council’s laws to do so without permission! She has feelings for Jax, but has no clue if they are going to be reciprocated in any way from him, which is a bit frustrating at times. She has met his sire, Dom (Dominic), who gives off some scary vibes at times, but is nothing like the Council members she will soon be facing when they decide if she should live or die! Jax has been putting off going to see the council, but they can put it off no longer. If they decide she is to be put down, then he will also be punished.
They are flying by private, vampire proof, jet to Milan in Italy, to meet these ancient elder vampires and Hailey decides to invite her brother Luke and witch best friend Kendra along, who was also one of the Bond Girls as well as Paige, Jax’s head enforcer, who was staying behind with Luke’s heart throb Ransom. Hailey is put on trial, but this is basically a discussion between the five elders all about her being made a vampire illegally, and what use was she as a human? Being made into a vampire is apparently a highly selective process and she should have had some outstanding or necessary role to play in their society, to be worthy. Apparently, her being a Bond Girl and catching bad guys and getting them locked up, is a human issue and not relevant. Jax had only told her about the different members of the council on their way over and one of the women is really dangerous and won’t be voting to keep her alive, no matter what! She has to try and control her outbursts and let just Jax talk to them, but they throw in a challenge and give her a limited time frame to catch and bring back a powerful rogue vampire!
A bit like her recent work back home, but she has far fewer details and can’t have assistance from her sire or his. Luckily she has a human, a witch, a surprising friend of a necromancer, and Jax’s bodyguards, all to help her out. If she fails this challenge, the sentence will be harder on Jax than it will be on her! It seems this rogue vampire has been going on a killing spree and the human police force have little to go on. He is far more dangerous than she realises and far older too. Some of the elders clearly want her to fail and have given her an almost impossible task to complete, in next to no time at all! They will have to work together and use their experience from bond chasing, Luke’s favourite crime shows on TV, and anything else they can get, to find out where this rogue vamp is and to catch him. That isn’t the only surprise that gets thrown her way, as Jax has been holding an ace up his sleeve, for when he needs it, and when it is revealed, it certainly drops a few jaws to the floor. But with the Vampire Elder Council, it also comes with a time limit in which to prove it and Hailey isn’t quite sure how she is going to cope with that! The time to face their punishment for Jax saving her human life against vampire law, has finally come and with it a challenge that may be far too difficult for Hailey to successfully complete, but with a team of friends and a very useful extra, they will face whatever comes and try to get back home in one piece. I can’t wait to see how Jax’s ‘Hail Mary’ pass plays out and it should add a touch of spice to this Bond Girl’s life, I can’t wait! I received an ARC copy of this book from BookSprout and I have freely given my own opinion of the book above.
