I just binged the first book and this one, and now I’m mad at myself for not waiting until the third and final (?) book is out, because now I have to wait to find out what happens.
This series isn’t reinventing the wheel, but it’s not trying to. There’s nothing really new here, it’s all the basic tropes of an NA college bully book: the fmc Evie is tough with a tragic past (dead family, horrible abuse and assault, etc), the guys are dicks, there are mean girls, a shady secret society, evil parents, and a college where bad stuff happens (attacks, people getting shot) that’s treated with a weird level of nonchalance from the faculty and other students.
So yeah, it’s not unique, but if you’re looking to scratch that itch of this genre and these tropes, they’re handled exceptionally well, here. Too often in this genre, the guys don’t even apologize or admit they’re wrong -- there’s just a change in their attitude towards the heroine without actually saying the words. I was pleasantly surprised to see that all 3 of the guys actually do apologize in this book, and Evie doesn't just immediately let them off the hook. She has real backbone, unlike a lot of fmcs in this genre. But I do still need more redemption and groveling from them in the next book. Especially from Elijah.
I was waffling between giving this 3 and 4 stars, because the pacing is a bit slow before Micah returns and there are some aspects of the plot that are still too vague (like Evie’s history with the Bianchi family, or why the guys betrayed Evie in the past). And there are some reveals that Evie reacts to in a frustrating way (like the bomb that Elijah drops about her sister towards the end. I get that it was emotional for Evie to hear so she's not thinking about asking follow up questions, but she still should have pressed him for more info! Wasn't her sister into girls? Are we supposed to think it was Elijah who did it, or that her sister was also abused the way Evie was and that caused her condition? I’m confused).
But I decided on 4 stars because there’s still another book (or more?) coming, so we’ll likely get answers to these things in due time. All in all, if you’re looking for college bully tropes, this series scratches that itch, and does it better than most.
