E quem é Meryl Streep? é um romance desafiador do polêmico autor libanês, Rachid Al-Daif. Como em outros livros seus, ele batiza o protagonista e narrador do romance com seu próprio nome. Rachid, o personagem, é um libanês recém-casado que se vê ameaçado pela ideia da emancipação feminina.
Ao se dar conta de que sua esposa usa a presença da TV na casa dos pais como desculpa para ficar longe de casa, Rachid compra uma televisão na esperança de atraí-la, mas à medida que o laço frágil que une o casal se desintegra, a televisão passa a ocupar um lugar cada vez maior na sua vida.
Numa cena crucial, ele se vê sozinho assistindo ao filme Kramer versus Kramer. Na ausência de legendas, Rachid se esforça para entender o que se passa no filme e projeta o comportamento de sua esposa na personagem vivida por Meryl Streep, que ao mesmo tempo que o cativa, também o apavora por representar um esforço de libertação das mulheres que ele considera inaceitável.
Rachid Al-Daif constrói um personagem reacionário, por vezes repulsivo, e não tem medo de mergulhar na mente desse indivíduo e descrever nua e cruamente sua mentalidade, inclusive sua vida sexual, real ou imaginada. O livro foi considerado pornográfico no mundo árabe e obteve um enorme sucesso tanto no idioma original, como em outros idiomas.

Rashid El Daif was born into a Christian Maronite family of eight children in Zgharta, Lebanon, in 1945.He studied in his village until high school. Then, he transferred to a government high school in Tripoli, Lebanon which only offered a philosophy degree, despite his penchant for science. After finishing high school, in 1965, he enrolled at the Lebanese University in Beirut in the Department of Arabic Letters. He became well-trained in classical Arabic literature and went to France in 1971 to continue his education.
While in France, he received Ph.D. in Modern Letters (Doctorat in Lettres Modernes) from University of Paris III, known as Sorbonne Nouvelle University Paris 3 on the theory of modern criticism applied to Unshūdat almaṭar, a collection of poems by Badr Shakir al-Sayyab, which was supervised by the distinguished Arabist André Miquel.
From 1972 to 1974, he worked as a teacher of Arabic for foreigners at University of Paris III.
In 1978, he received a Master of Advanced Studies, known in French as a Diplôme d'études approfondies, in linguistics at the University of Paris V, commonly known as “the Sorbonne” in preparation for a second doctoral thesis on diglossia in the Arab countries.
From 1974 to 2008, El Daif worked as an assistant professor at the Lebanese University in the Department of Arabic language and literature. He was a visiting professor at the University of Toulouse, France in 1999. From 2008 to 2013, he was an adjunct professor at the Lebanese American University (LAU). Since 2012, he has served a professor of Arabic creative writing at The American University of Beirut (AUB).
El Daif has received dozens of invitations to speak about his novels from all over the world including in the Netherlands, Japan, Germany, France, the United States.
El-Daif’s work has attracted numerous critical books and articles including by Samira Aghacy, Stefan G. Meyer, Ken Seigneurie, Assaad Khairallah, Paul Starkey, Mona Takieddine Amyuni, Edgar Weber and others. Several university dissertations have also been written on El Daif’s novels. El Daif has also gone on to supervise the publication of at least five novels from his students and in 2018 edited and published a collection of his student's work titled tahīya' li-dawī ḥaḍurī (Get Ready for the Rumble of my Presence).

مونولج طويل وبديع لصوت الهواجس الذكورية عن المرأة والحب والجنس والزواج.

وعكس ما كنا نتوقع من أن يحلق بنا اﻷدب في فضاءاته وعوالمه التي وإن ﻻمست تخوم الواقع إﻻ أنها تحتفظ بخاصيتها المغايرة له، يهوي بنا الضعيف إلى قاع عالم النزوات والشكوك، بأوصاف وتعابير جنسية متطرفة، ومواضيع تفسد أكثر مما تصلح وﻻ تناقش بين ذوي المروءة ناهيك عن وضعها في كتاب..كنت رائعا في روايتك ألواح لكنك خربتها مع ميريل ستريب يا رشيد!ء

ينبغي القول أولا أنه من الضروري وضع معايير للكتب العربية بطريقة ما ولعلها مسؤولية الكاتب ودور النشر. ثم للقراءة والتقييم، هذه الرواية غير مناسبة لما دون العشرين.
رواية عن رجل يبلغ الخامسة والثلاثين يتزوج من شابة عن طريق خالته. مهووس (حدّ القرف) بالجنس وتفاصيله الدقيقة، مريض بالشك لأبعد الحدود، عقلية ذكورية مستبدة. فالرجل يتولى الحديث كله وهو الشخصية الحاضرة الوحيدة في القصة: يلاحظ، يراقب، يفكر، يتذكر، يحلل، يجادل، يستنتج، يقرر وينفذ حسبما يناسبه فهو رجل والرجل يحق له ما لا يحق للمرأة! - كل ذلك من خلال ممارسته الجنس بين كل ذلك طبعًا. بمعنى، خلال شهر واحد فقط هي حدود الرواية، يستقرئ هذا الكائن أخلاق زوجته وأمها وشرفهما ويصدر أحكامه القطعية تجاهها من خلال ردود أفعالها تجاهه... خلال المضاجعة!

تصطفل ميربل ستريب رواية عربية لبنانيه بطابع مختلف وجرئ وجرئ جداً، عبارة عن حوار ذاتي طويل لشاب يعيش في بداية رحلته الزوجية خوف وقلق وتوجس بسبب غموض ماضي زوجته التي ما ان أنتهى من مراسم الزواج بها حتى بدأ في الدخول في متاهه عميقة مليئة بالتساؤلات عن زوجته التي قادته الأقدار والضغوط الأسرية والاجتماعية إلى الارتباط معها
من خلال أحداث هذه الرواية يزداد إيمانك بعدم جدوى الزواج التقليدي أو الكلاسيكي القائم على عملية اكشط وأربح والمرتكز على أبعاد إجتماعية محضه متجرده من حرية الرجل والمرأة في الإختيار (:

"شيء جميل أن نتبادل المعارف باستمرار بحيث تنتهي معارفنا يوماً بأن تتساوى، كالأوعية المتصلة".
تدور الرواية حول علاقة زوجين حديثي الزواج وتأتي الأحداث على لسان الزوج، فيتحدث عن لقائهم الأول، وكيف جاءت فرصة الزواج بزوجته، وعن تعلق زوجته ببيت أهلها وأمها، وعن تفاصيل الشقة التي يسكنون بها، وعن حاجته لشراء تلفاز للشقة حتى يُخرج زوجته من جو "القبر" كما هي تصف حالة الشقة من غير تلفاز وحتى لا تجد حجة لإدعاء الملل والذهاب لبيت أهلها لعدم وجود ما يرفه عنها في شقتهم الخاصة، وعن أحوال الفراش والمعاشرة، وعن الشكوك التي تطرأ على بال الزوج حيال ماضي زوجته وطباعها، وعن سكان العمارة وعلاقتهم بهم، وعن الحوادث التي تطرأ على مسار علاقتهم الزوجية، والهواجس التي تسيطر على بال كل فرد منهما.
يأتي إرتباط النص في عنوانه بـ "ميريل ستريب" من خلال محاولة "الضعيف" عكس أحداث روايته على أحداث فيلم "ميريل ستريب" - "كرايمر ضد كرايمر" فينغمس في مناقشة أحداث الفيلم ويحاول المقاربة بين أحداث الفيلم وما يجري من تطورات في علاقته الزوجية، ويخوض في قراءة أحداث الفيلم رغم عدم إدراكه لأي جملة طرأت في الفيلم حيث أن الفيلم كان يذاع على إحدى المحطات التلفزيونية دون ترجمة للعربية، الأمر الذي جعله يفترض إفتراضاً طبيعة الحوارات التي تدور بين الشخصيات وعلاقة كل شخصية بالأخرى، ويتغزل في شكل وأنوثة "ستريب" ويستغرب أن سيدة بجمالها تخوض مثل تلك المعاناة الزوجية مع شخصية بشكل "دستين هوفمان" الذي لا يراه أنها يستحقها حيث أنه لا يعادلها جذابية في الشكل أو في الشخصية.
يعيب النص الإنغماس التام في الأفعال والهواجس والنظريات الجنسية حيث يكاد أن يكون بناء النص بأكمله قائم على ذلك، الأمر الذي دفعني للنفور منه جزئياً وجعلني لا أستمتع به بشكلٍ كامل، حتى لغة "الضعيف" لا تحمل أي طابع شاعري يجعل من حضور تلك المشاهد خفيفاً على النفس بل يأتي بأوصافه بشكل مباشر دون شاعرية أو رمزية تُغلف الفعل أو الحدث، فتجدك تخاطب نفسك متسائلاً عن السبب الذي دفعك لإقتناء هذة الرواية من الأساس ومواصلة القراءة فيها، الحقيقة أنني على ما يبدو نضجت جداً على نوعية هذة النصوص وصرت لا أرى فيها أي جمالية تذكر حين يأتي النقاش على مضمونها العام.
الرواية محشوة حشواً جماً بالنظريات السطحية في موضوعات متعددة تتعلق بدور الرجل والمرأة في المجتمع، والحريات الشخصية، ومفهوم المثلية، والعلاقة الجنسية/الزوجية، وأفعال الفراش، وتضع المرأة في موضع المتهم دائماً فيما يتعلق بمسألة العذرية والعلاقات العاطفية، وكذلك تركز على ذكر نظرية أو موضوع عفا عنه الزمن في حديث "الضعيف" وهو التلفاز والمحطات التلفزيونية وما تعرضه وكيف أنه أداه لتشوية فكر أفراد المجتمع والمتلقي، الأمر الذي جعلني أعود لتاريخ الطبعة الأولى لهذة الرواية لأتفهم تأثير ذلك الموضوع على المجتمع في حينه، قبل أن تتعدد أدوات غزو فكر المجتمع في الوقت الحالي بحسب تعبير الرأي العام في زمننا المعاصر. على كل حال كانت قراءة سريعة وخالية من المتعة ومخيبة للتوقعات في نفس الوقت.

Linda's review: A fun title, the translators used a little artistic license to arrive at it and good for them, they won an award for their translation.
I read the reviews of this book posted in Arabic (using Google translate) and they are very mixed from it is “unjustified to talk about sexually restricted areas” to “a bold daring dive” to “nothing new here” which isn't surprising given that Beirut is a city of contrasts, the most striking being that of new wealth against a backdrop of quite recent civil war. For example, in the marble-walled souk well-groomed Arab families can be seen strolling past smiling Lebanese women working their dome shaped grills before rolling up man‘oushes to sell as street food. Also, the mixture of Arabic, French and English spellings from street names to restaurant menus serve to underline the diversity of Lebanese society.
The book itself reminds me of The Vagina Monologues which I saw whilst still being performed by its author Eve Ensler in London in the 90s; it is still being staged today and is still making headway in changing attitudes to the issues it raises. Who's Afraid of Meryl Streep? is also being performed as a play in Arabic and in French and hopefully is bringing similar issues to the consciousness of its audience. The root problem is that the protagonist’s attitude and expectations regarding sex differ somewhat from his wife's. I was astonished at some of his thoughts, for example he was annoyed that his wife did not thank him for making her pregnant and he didn't flinch at slipping a sedative into her drink to try something out that she wasn’t keen on. He wrestles with the thought that his wife may not have been a virgin even though he was 35 and she was 30 when they married and he considers it a man’s right to deflower at least one virgin. However, his beliefs are challenged by cable TV which introduces western ideas and culture through film, and drop by drop this seems to be altering the shape of attitudes in traditional families. In modern Beirut some people are probably already shrugging their shoulders and thinking ‘nothing new here'.
I found the insight into traditional Lebanese thought on the cusp of this culture change interesting, but it is a slight book and doesn't offer much at all from the feminine p.o.v hence 3 stars.

Desconfortante!
Excelente edição e tradução de Felipe Benjamin Francisco pela Editora Tabla, este livro acompanha o pensamento de um homem recém-casado com uma mulher - que nunca é nomeadada - que divaga sobre sua relação com a mulher enquanto assiste televisão sozinho.
A leitura é rápida, até pela pobreza do pensamento do personagem-narrador, porém não é uma leitura fácil, pois passa por temas relacionados a abuso e sexo de forma que incomoda quem lê. É um passeio pela mente tosca de um homem que acredita que os homens tem direito às mulheres: ao seu sexo, à sua virgindade e aos seus corpos.
Apesar dos relatos do narrador serem bastante gráficos - o que inclusive gerou polêmica em países árabes - não é um livro só sobre isso (sexo). É uma composição muito mais ampla, que lida de forma ácida e escancarada com o moralismo e a masculinidade. Porém não se engane em acreditar que este moralismo provém de um contexto apenas libanês, mais conservador. Parte do que tanto incomoda no livro é a proximidade entre o conservadorismo e moralismo libanês e brasileiro.

A leitura é rápida, até pela pobreza do pensamento do personagem-narrador, porém não é uma leitura fácil, pois passa por temas relacionados a abuso e sexo de forma que incomoda quem lê. É um passeio pela mente tosca de um homem que acredita que os homens tem direito às mulheres: ao seu sexo, à sua virgindade e aos seus corpos.
Apesar dos relatos do narrador serem bastante gráficos - o que inclusive gerou polêmica em países árabes - não é um livro só sobre isso (sexo). É uma composição muito mais ampla, que lida de forma ácida e escancarada com o moralismo e a masculinidade. Porém não se engane em acreditar que este moralismo provém de um contexto apenas libanês, mais conservador. Parte do que tanto incomoda no livro é a proximidade entre o conservadorismo e moralismo libanês e brasileiro.

عنوان جرئ لقصة جريئة تغوص في اغوار العلاقة الحميمية الجنسية بين الرجل وزوجته...القصة تدور في اطار درامي ساخر ...سريعة الايقاع..خالية من التعقيدات اللفظية اواللغوية لدرجة مبالغ فيها مع ذلك فهي تستحق القراءة لجراتها ولانها تنقل الواقع بدون اي مبالغة اورتوش ..الرواية بدات الا في هذه الايام تمثل في مسرح لبنان واذا عولج النص بسيناريو مدروس سوف تنجح حتما.

بإعتقادي ان التلميح للجنس وتفرعاته اجمل بكثير من تسميته، ولهذا الرواية لم تعجبني. قد يقول البعض ان الرواية جريئة وانا اقول انها رواية عادية لم تقدم لي شيء يذكر، هذه محاولتي الاولى مع رشيد الضعيف، سأرى ماذا سيتغير في روايات اخرى له ..

رواية ساخرة تغوص بعمق في تفكير الرجل الذكوري العربي. وتوضح أهم نقطة في هذا النوع من الرجال؛ غياب الذكاء العاطفي أو بشكل أوضح: الغباء العاطفي. تمكن الضعيف من صناعة شخصية "سمجة" تحاول أن ترسم نفسها كأنها الضحية في مونولوجها الحاوي على فجوات نرى بوضوح منها من هو جذر المشكلة. يحاول "رشود" أن يكون مودرن بس ما كتير. يغتصب زوجته ويعتبر الأمر من حقه. يتحرش بالخياطة ولا يعير الأمر أي اهتمام. معظم أفكاره تدور حول العفة والجنس و"حقه كرجل". السبب في المشاكل إما الساتالايت وإما حماته وإما زوجته.
برأيي التجسيد كان ناجحاً ومنصفاً لنوع من الرجال المتوافرين بكثرة عربياً وعالمياً وللأسف لم يتوقف مصنع الأبوية عن تصنيع أمثالهم كل يوم.

رجل مهووسا بالجنس وتفاصيله، نظرية المؤامرة تسيطر على تفكيره، عقلية ذكورية طاغية، يتزوج من امرأة عن طريق خالته، وطوال الأحداث نسمع مونولوج طويل منه عن هواجسه، فيلاحظ ويفكر ويراقب ويتذكر ويحلل ويستنتج ويقرر وينفذ حسبما يناسبه، ويمارس للجنس بين كل ذلك. وفي شهر واحد، وهو زمن الرواية، يستقرئ أخلاق زوجته وأمها وشرفهما ويصدر أحكامه الذكورية تجاهها من خلال ردود أفعالها من علاقتهما على السرير!

الغلاف والعنوان أوحيا لي في البداية بأنها رواية تافهة لكنهما جذباني فضلاً عن النبذة (ملاحظة: قرأت الرواية بنسختها الصادرة عن دار الساقي وغلاف مختلف) كانت على إحدى الرفوف في الدار ولفتتني خلال عملي هناك، في الحقيقة وما لم يفهمه بعض القراء، أن الضعيف حاول تصوير الهواجس الذكورية بطريقة ironie ساخرة ومضحكة، أي نقدية بطريقة غير مباشرة، شخصياً ضحكت كثيراً عند قراءتي لهذه الرواية واستمتعت أيضاً، ولا يستطيع الكتابة بهذه الطريقة إلا روائي متمكن فذ، وأحببت كتابته عن تفاصيل تلك الفترة الزمنية.

سيئة بكل المقاييس والاوجه لا على خط الفكرة ولا على خط البناء اعتقد ان الكاتب كان يمر باحدى ازمتين اما انها ازمة مالية واراد انعاش حسابه البنكي عن طريق اثارة الجدل المبالغ فيه الاكثر مبيعاً او انها ازمة منتصف العمر !!

No prólogo já temos a dica: é o personagem mais odioso que iremos conhecer, realmente é!
Entrando na mente de Rachid percebemos quantos pensamentos machistas podem parecer lógicos na cabeça de algumas pessoas. Na história Rachid se considera alguém com ideias modernas e até mesmo feministas acho que foi o que me mais me assustou.
O livro tem uma narrativa agradável, mas confesso que fiquei engasgada com vários trechos.

حكاية جريئة عن زوج خدع بزوجته. الاسلوب بشكل عام بسيط ومناسب لهكذا حكاية. تفاصيل مثيرة بل منفرة في بعض الأحيان. السؤال هو ما الهدف من هذا العمل؟ هل القراءة لمجرد التسلية وضياع الوقت بموضوع جريء وطريف نوع ما رغم قسوة مافيه. أم أنه الحذر ثم الحذر قبل الاقدام على الزواج من شريكة حياتك ؟ الاجابة عند رشيد الضعيف
