This three book series contains characters you will be familiar with if you’ve read this author’s The Ixan Prophecies. Reading The Ixan Prophecies is not required but would give you more insight into the characters and the universe. *No spoilers (or at least minimal)*
The first book moves at a very good pace. We are introduced to new alien species in a new universe. What I enjoyed most about the book was the characters though. The authors give us good background and continue to develop them as story moves along.
The second book in the Fleet Ops series also moves along at a good pace. The new aliens we meet in the first book are further developed in this one. The situation continues to deteriorate for the protagonists as the story emerges. I enjoyed the book although I found that some of the battles, while good and interesting, could have been shortened.
The last book in the box set gave us a good finish and left us with the possibility of further stories involving the main characters of Fleet Ops. This series overall had good character and plot development (including twists). New and very unusual alien species were introduced and linked to their overall universe arc. I enjoyed all three books in this set and gave it 5 stars. I look forward to any future books involving these characters.
I really enjoyed this series. Captain Vin Husher is back and on another mission with everything on the line as he tries to keep everyone alive so they can return home. It was fun and interesting. I have not read the first series with Husher but found it easy to follow and figure out what was going on. I enjoyed the setup to the new mission and what happened once the mission started. Loved watching the crew fight to survive everything thrown at them. I was entertained and drawn in to see what would happen next. Would the fighting with the Brood end this time? I laughed and groaned and whined but it was a blast to read if you like battles. And do not forget the surprise of new aliens. Just a fun series.
If you are reading Scott Bartlett and Joshua James for the first time, be sure to check the reading order for the series of books. You will be glad you did. The series can be read as stand alone, but they built off of the previous stories. You can get most of the series for only.99 cents each, so it's not a huge investment. I have read many of the series from both of these authors. Except for a few editing glitches, I find these stories incredibly enjoyable and entertaining. If you're an English language professor, you may have issues. If you're forgiving then the mistakes won't bother you. The characters are well developed and the stories are well thought out and very entertaining. I look forward to reading more stories from both of these authors.
But the book itself, as the story goes, starts in the middle of nowhere introducing very little information about the characters; it feels like we started in the middle of the story as if there's a missing previous book.
EDIT: Okay yes, there are more to these series fortunately! Where previously I thought the author failed to significantly keep in the background of the characters in THIS trilogy... Since there are previous books that I'm jumping on now it may be great that the author didn't reiterate previously given information from other books, since authors frequently fill their books with previously mentioned information just to fill their books!
This is a rating for the entire three book trilogy.
This is part of a larger series. I believe this to be the second part of the series. I would recommend you read this series from book #1 for greatest enjoyment.
I liked it okay, but started to feel like it was dragging on without much point. Very much reminded me of watching the uptenth sci fi movie in a series and realizing it was all about battles, special effects, more fighting, more special effects, etc. It stated to bore me. Where was the plot? I needed more character play. I needed something with some meat.
This box set collects the books Trapped, Counterstrike and Relentless. The authors are masters of military sci-fi. I’ve been a huge fan of their work both as solo authors and coauthors. Action is paired with a great plot that leaves you wanting more. The world building is first rate and the characters are complex and well developed. I highly recommend this series to anyone who loves reading great plots with plenty of action.
I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
A solid evolution of the storyline begun with The Ixan Prophecies, the Mech Wars, and The Capital Fleet releases – each a box” set for $9.99 each. Scott Bartlett is a first-rate storyteller who never drifts into derivative characters or conflicts you might have already encountered in television shows, movies, or books by authors who have a long way to go to reach this standard of writing. And one more time: If you have enjoyed reading Rick Partlow, Scott Bartlett will satisfy your reading hunger in every respect.
Vin Husher should be an Admiral, but everyone knows that won’t happen. Sent to search for the source of a request for help, the Battle Fleet runs into the Brood, who immediately attack, ignoring all communications. Until they offer to let the Fleet go, in return for Husher. Unable to jump out, and not wanting to leave a trail to earth for the Brood, can Husher once again, find a way out?
This was a great book set of 3 by Scott Bartlett and Joshua James, we have been defending the universe for some time now but it seems that the Union is breaking apart at every chance. Now it is up to one leader to go and investigate a call for help. Falling into a trap was the last think that the captain wanted to do now it up to him to save us and the rest of the universe from imploding on itself.
I was pleasantly surprised when I started this series. I had just finished the Ixan Prophecies and was wishing there would be another book to follow those because the ending seemed so final and yet left me wanting more. So I started reading The Relentless box series. And I was happy to find that it’s a continuation of the Ixan Prophecies. The Relentless books are great. Lots of action, surprises and shocking at times. A great ending to the Captain Husher books.
This time out Bartlett provides the reader with a solid well paced story. The reader is able to empathize with the protagonists and hope that our future is not in the hands of such ignorant officers and subornates! The story keeps the readers' attention so I do recommend this book as an adequate Space Opera
What an amazing trilogy to keep you intrigued. Captain Vin is back and courageous as always. He’s trying to save the people. I was completely engrossed in everything that happened. Happy to have all three together.
You are thrown into a chaotic universe almost immediately. You have to learn fast who is who and what are the intrigues floating around. It is fast, unrelenting action from beginning to the end. Fascinating characters. Worth the long read.
I am on disability right now so I have been gorging on Sci-Fi, my favorite genre. This was a solid trilogy that kept my attention. I enjoy reading about alternative universes and the character development was good. I highly recommend this trilogy, even if the end wrapped it up a little too tightly.
In the main part, I enjoyed the series. It was fast paced, entertaining and I liked both the premise / universe and the key characters. But the storyline felt repetitive, especially in the space battles, which were very "here we go again again again".
I picked up this box set and dived right in. Oops I missed some previous books but the writing was done that it did not make a lot of difference. Maybe backstory. This was a wonderful read and I look forward to covering all the others I missed. LoL
More than a few too many battle scenes and good characters killed off, but well worth it . A real keep you turning the pages book. Killed the bad guys too! I really enjoyed this series and would recommend it to anyone who likes this genre.
One I started reading Fleet Ops I had a hard time stopping. I go by the principle that says if you drop your tablet three times it's time to go to sleep. This was a four timer. 😜
Get set for one hellofaride with this box set. It has it all and is written so well that I ended up spend way to much time reading it. What ever you want it is in this set.
Overwhelming odds, but courage and destiny prevail. Good melding of bang bang stuff and feelings. Very simpatico alien. But there will be another step to take against the enemy…
