I find the Victorian era in general absolutely fascinating, and this book satisfied my curiosity with quite literally, an A-Z of Victorian crime. The book is split into nine chapters, and each chapter talks about a specific subject, such as arsenic poisoning, or public hanging, for instance.
Some of the crimes surprised me in here, and admittedly, some of them are fairly gruesome to read about. I found a couple of the poisoning records particularly shocking to read of. A married woman back then was allowed to be physically and psychologically abused in her own home, also bearing in mind the husband is galavanting off with Tom, Dick and Harry, but as soon as a woman loses her sanity and begins lacing his food with poison, she is immediately publicly hanged. I know times have changed now, but how was it deemed ok by law to commit such atrocities to women back then? Ah yes, it must have slipped my mind, we're all suffering from hysteria.
Some of the stories I was hoping for a little more information on, but there were many stories to get in, so I can't really complain. Also, at the end of each section, were references to further reading material, so if one wished to pursue the stories, one is able.
This was a highly informative, interesting and wonderfully gory read, and I'd recommend this to anyone with interests in the Victorian era.

Interesting little who's who if Victorian crimes. It's nice to see books branching out rather than focusing on Jack the Ripper for a change.

One of the most fascinating times in history is the Victorian Era. Adding a set of elements that fascinate those who like to look for more about the time, it can be both incredible and macabre. In Macabre Victorian Crimes, there are accounts of crimes committed specifically in this period, and the reader may be surprised at what they can find on the pages.
The book is divided into nine chapters, with a specific theme for each. There are also several other accounts within these divisions. The chapters may seem long, but the subchapters are extremely short, developing each story according to the proposed theme.
The journey straight to the Victorian Era begins as soon as we open the book. From the cover it is possible to appreciate the beauty of the edition that perfectly matches the theme portrayed. The initial images bring common traits of the time, with certain macabre traits. After this first impression, the first reports revolve around Jack the Ripper, who marked the time, bringing a kind of inhuman tragedy and still today without discoveries about who he was.
The first chapter, where it shows possible suspects and other stories that surround Jack the Ripper, is a little long and it took me a while to get the rhythm there. As exciting as it is, at first there were so many names that it was easy to get lost, so not everything described was engraved in my memory.
From the second chapter onwards, I felt a certain shift in my interest, and at last the book caught my full attention. The content does not only cover fatalities and victims, but also about those who were executioners, as well as the executioners of the time. It is as shocking as it is unbelievable that a few centuries ago there were as many events as those mentioned.
The dark aspect of the work, together with the illustrations in the edition, provide a source of imagination for the reader to enjoy. The names are many and other details can be too much at times, but the descriptions are certainly etched in memory for being so cruel.
The amount of information present is impressive, and it is described quickly. Each subchapter contains a maximum of three pages, mixed with text and illustrations. The authors created an excellent book, which I was very interested in. In addition to shocking, some excerpts can be repulsive, especially for describing true stories.
One downside is that because there are so many stories, they don't have as many details. On the one hand, it's good, since it doesn't stretch to the point of getting tired, and on the other hand, it's bad to know sometimes some stories arouse the interest more of those who are reading tired.
In any case, the reading experience conveys exactly what it promises. In it, you can find one of the sides of the Victorian Era and several macabre and real stories from such a remarkable time in history. Victorian Crimes Macabre can be a great read for anyone interested in the subject, especially those who like the Trail of Blood series and Sweeney Todd.

Uma edição muito bonita e bem elaborada.
Apresenta um panorama bem interessante da era Vitoriana e impressiona seriedade das pesquisas. Um livro repleto de curiosidades e informações que fazem o leitor mergulhar numa época da história da humanidade que parece até fantasiosa de tão bizarra.
Eu só esperava um pouco mais detalhes nos relatos de alguns dos casos mais notáveis.
Apresenta um panorama bem interessante da era Vitoriana e impressiona seriedade das pesquisas. Um livro repleto de curiosidades e informações que fazem o leitor mergulhar numa época da história da humanidade que parece até fantasiosa de tão bizarra.
Eu só esperava um pouco mais detalhes nos relatos de alguns dos casos mais notáveis.

Minha experiência com a leitura não foi muito boa, eu li por gostar do tema mas a escrita desse livro não me prendeu, e por mais interessante que sejam os crimes eu penei demais para conseguir finalizar esse livro. Sem contar que muitos dos casos não tem profundidade e não tem explicações elaboradas e muitos contos que de macabros não tem nada.
Foi uma leitura bem "sei lá", que finalizei apenas por não conseguir abandonar livros.

Esse é um livro de casos reais de assassinato que se passaram na época vitoriana. O tema é interessante e a proposta de separar por período parecia interessante, mas esse é um livro bem básico.
Se você já leu outros livros de não-ficção que se passe nessa época (principalmente os já lançados pela Darkside), você vai ver uma repetição de casos. Ficou bem no mais do mesmo. Esperava mais.
O ponto positivo ficou para os momentos em que foi destacado a importância que alguns casos tiveram nas obras do Charles Dickens. Eu, como uma pessoa que gosto dos livros dele, gostei de saber mais dessas relações.
Outro ponto que não gostei, porém, foi a divisão de autores. As vezes duas pessoas diferentes queriam falar do mesmo assunto e acabava ficando repetitivo. E nem a divisão ficou boa.

Acho an era vitoriana em geral absolutamente fascinante, e este livro satisfez minha curiosidade com um A-Z do crime vitoriano. O livro é dividido em nove capítulos, e cada capítulo fala sobre um assunto específico, como envenenamento por arsênico ou enforcamento público, por exemplo.
Alguns dos crimes me surpreenderam aqui e, reconhecidamente, alguns deles são bastante horríveis de se ler. Achei alguns dos registros de envenenamento particularmente chocantes.

Basically the title says it all. A-Z of cases of crime. Very well written an interesting cases giving the history not only of the cases but of methods of killing, executions and social history which was involved in the cause of the killings. Educational and interesting. I would recommend especially if you are studying crime and punishment.

Its an outstanding insight into not just one; but all the main crime/murders of the Victorian time, and some of the storys make today look like childs play > Jack the Ripper / The Torso Murders; and much much more, love crime; love history; its the book to have.

An interesting look at crime in the Victorian Times and some very well known cases in here. Plus many references to other books for more information which I really liked and have extended my book list.

pra quem vive de true crime.... nao tem nada de novidade por aqui, muitos casos são famosos e já foram relatados em outras mídias, tipo documentários, podcasts e até mesmo livros... mas admiro a pesquisa da equipe, foi muito bem feita

foi uma leitura muito boa, que agregou bastante, a pesquisa e a construção do livros foram simplesmente fantásticas, dando jus ao que o próprio livro vai propor, bem interessante.

The book did feature some interesting crimes and personalities, but each chapter was rushed and offered little detail or explanation. It was clear that the authors had "favorite criminals", because there were people what were mentioned every other chapter, be it as an exemple, or to compare the others to them.
