How well do you really know your neighbors?College student Jake Howell is enjoying the last weekend of summer before heading back to school. He’s lived next door to the Meyers for years, and on the surface they seem to be an average family living in the suburbs. That is, until one night when Jake is awakened by an altercation between Lori and Bill Meyer.Bill knows what he saw, and now Jake has to decide if he will stay quiet or go to the police. Jake unwittingly uncovers a dark secret that will change the course of his life, putting him on an unexpected path that will bring him face to face with the dark side of human nature. On that path, he will learn a scary that evil is sometimes hiding in plain sight.
The first chapter was engaging enough, and I’m glad I stuck with it. I could feel the fear radiating from Jake as he witnessed something horrible involving his neighbor. That was such a terrifying position to be in.
Although the story didn’t completely blow me away, the characters were well-developed, and the plot was driven by mystery and suspense, which I really enjoyed. The twist was predictable at best, but since it was executed well, I didn’t mind.
A short and fun read if you’re looking for something to make you feel uneasy.
Absolutely amazing! The story had my attention fro the get go and held it all the way to the end. I’ve read many novellas and short stories and this one is top notch! While short, the substance had all the makings of a great novel. I can’t wait to read more of Sharon’s stories!
