I’m Barbara Gold. 71. 5'5". blue. gray. none of your business. Undercover surveillance, small arms, chemical weapons, Middle Eastern and Latin American politics. Current Retired CIA agent, widow, and grandmother.
Liz, a friend Barbara met during her undercover stint at Cheerville’s nudist colony, is getting married. When Barbara accompanies Liz to plan the wedding, the wedding planner is shot dead at the venue.
Barbara knows that bullet was intended for Liz, but why? Liz has secrets of her own, and her colorful past is catching up with her and threatening her new peaceful life. Even though Barbara is in the dark about who Liz used to work for, she knows she has to help her friend using her CIA skills and connections.
I love Barbara and her whole outlook on life. She's so smart and resourceful. This wasn't my favorite mystery but I love the series as a whole. Her friend Liz was a fun addition, we met her in a previous book, and in this one they work together to solve a murder mystery. Barbara aka Granny is helping Liz with her wedding when someone tries to kill Liz. They figure it out at the end and save the day.
I am all caught up in the series and I love it so much. This series has a character that is not your typical "hero" or love interest, she is a retiree and AMAZING. I love the normality of a more mature character and the incredible plots she gets involved in. The books are short but well developed and I love the cadence of the series. I highly recommend for a cozy mystery that is not too cheesy and no awkward love plot.
What I liked about it: -Liz and Barbara's friendship. They have a nice banter and it was a nice evolution of a background character to something more main -The humor. Most of the time it was snappy and quick, something that is of great benefit to this series and the length of the book. -The plan Liz comes up with. That was just genuinely funny and an example of good foreshadowing on that part
What I was on the fence about -The fact there really isn't a mystery per se. Sure, the indentity of who's trying to kill Liz isn't known until near the end, but I'd say the manner which the whole thing is carried out is more buddy cop. Not a bad thing and honestly a logical choice for this series, but I guess not what I was expecting
What I didn't like: -Ive complained about it before, but sometimes her books show some not so subtle hints about her views on things. Every time somebody being overweight is mentioned it's in a negative way, i.e. the police chief and Barbara's is becoming "soft" compared to his badass parents. Guy with long hair runs a sleezy motel. Speaking more of that motel, that was just a little too much. If she was a little more lighthearted and less vitriolic it would just feel more like Barbara in my opinion. Why would a CIA agent care what somebody does in their spare time? Just my opinion, and it was toned down from previous entries -The insistance on drugs being the worst thing in the world. It's at least 3 books now where somebody being inebriated with drugs has been some sort of plot point. I'm fine with this in isolation with just this book as it makes logical sense with the drug trade. However, with the rest of the series I just want to say "I get it; drugs bad and melt brain". Again not a ruiner of the book, but it's inclusion did make me enjoy the book a little less

Barbara, the gun toting ex-spy, is back in her tenth crime solving adventure of the Secret Agent Granny series. Liz, Granny's friend from her nudist colony stint, is getting married. Barbara agrees to help with the planning. She was not expecting for it to turning into an assassination attempt on Liz. After the accidental murder of the wedding planner, Granny and Liz join forces to stop the killers before Liz's wedding in ruined. As always, this was laugh out loud read. I cannot wait for the next adventure. I received an ARC from the author for purposes of an unbiased review.
This was one of the best stories yet. Barbara still got it and tries to not let anything get her down. She helping her friend Liz with her wedding. But then something major goes wrong. Now they have days to figure out who's after Liz and squash it before the wedding. This was a fast paced story. I loved every minute of it. I hoped this wasn't the last book because Barbara has a lot more adventures and deaths to solve before her own. I voluntarily agreed to review this book. My review is my own honest opinion.
I received an ARC in return for an honest review. Barbara Gold, everybody's favorite retired spy grandma, is back in another adventure. Her friend Liz, another spy, is getting married. One problem, someone is out to kill Liz. After some harrowing, and amusing, near misses, they plot a trap for the killers. They are two very clever ladies. This book was filled with non stop action. This is a great series and I can't wait for the next book.
This is a humorous story that mixes spies and a bride-to-be. Granny aka Barbara is there to help her friend get her wedding planned. They meet with the wedding planner, but unfortunately, the wedding planner is the one who gets shot. Who would kill a wedding planner or was someone else the target? I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
This is the perfect antidote to the Covid stress we are all feeling after a year plus of isolation, masking and distancing and not doing our regular things. The plots, absurd shenanigans that make up Granny's life experiences and actions, and the solutions are all just crazy and fun. I really enjoyed this book and the whole series- although there is a feeling of knowing what might come next at times.
Barbara is at it again! Her friendship with Liz has joined them together in planning a wedding, and now solving a murder. Barbara (ex CIA agent) and Liz (????) team up to find out who has targeted one of them. Is their past catching up with one of them? A must read that will have you turning the pages faster than Granny drives. I received an advanced readers copy of this book.
Liz is Barbara's friend from the nudist colony. Liz is getting married and Barbara is helping plan the wedding. Barbara finds out a lot about Liz while planning her wedding. Things she never knew. Together they try to find out who is trying to kill one of them. Will Barbara's CIA training come in handy?
I am a fan of Granny. She makes me smile. She manages to find herself involved in another shooting. The sheriff is his normal useless self. So Granny researches. I found the book interesting and a perfect escape. The book felt shorter than it was because I was wrapped up into the story.
I love the Granny/Barbara series. Barbara is a former agent that still uses her old skills to solve murders in Cheerville, her new hometown. You can't go wrong with a Harper Lin book, fast-paced, entertaining, and loads of fun.
Granny never disappoints This is a well-crafted member of the series ( have the others and I look forward to the next one.) My own grandmother could not drive like Granny. She scared me out of my wits.
Love Granny! A laugh out loud cozy mystery with an awesome main character. And what a character she is. Fun, well written. I hope there will be more in this series.
This is the last book in this series so far and Harper Lin I need to know, will we get another one???
It was as usual real fun, I am sort of happy that Barbara’s back pain has become a recurring character. Oh, also Liz was cool of course.
I definitely missed Octavian, but I think that Barbara’s doubts about going more serious with him are sweet, so is the way they interacted at the end.
Maybe I didn’t super like that every single time Barbara and Liz talked, they had to hint or make jokes about their secret past. Ok we get it, no need to make a joke or try to trip each one up every time you open your mouths. But eh, it was a minor detail.
I will be waiting for the next instalment Harper, please be fast!
