How can you be the centre of attention when you aren't even alive? A mother, normally the main function, the main artery of the family circle has proven to be the very opposite. She had petrified a number of people throughout the community, even towards her own children. She left a trail of disruption, swindled a fist full of people. One member of the family is being blamed for her death, so, we have murder, but who is it?

Trigger warnings: childhood abuse, attempted sexual assault, drowning, murder, suicide. Not very graphic but read at your own discretion.

This is the weirdest, most wonderful mishmash of genres. It is adult general fiction with a little bit of fantasy and a whole lot of mystery that also tackles childhood trauma.

I've seen some users categorise this as romance and it is very much NOT a romance. If you go into this with that expectation you're going to be disappointed. Throughout the story ther

Love the book. Not for those who are triggered easily by narcissism or the abuse associated with it. It is more of a dark novel but full of magic realism. Looking forward to the next two books to come in this series. No spoilers but if you like books by Alice Hoffman and Sarah Addison Allen or even Barbara Michaels you will enjoy this book.

A new genre for this Author, and she did not disappoint!

Anyone who has read Byrd Nash before, will not be surprised when I say she presents a book with a well thought out plot, great character development, and relationships; with a charming node to classic literary tales that are well known and adored.

For any reader who personally walks a magical path, they will likely come to greatly appreciate the accurate and truthful representation of magic being used in one's everyday life.

Rachel Rowan has always been a force to be reckoned with; but now she’s dead and still manages to create havoc amongst her children and the townspeople of Grimsby.
Her three grown children have finally had just about enough.

The story takes place in a town where everyone knows everyone and their business. I know, because I grew up in such place. The story’s perspective is told through Vic, the middle Rowan, who left Grimsby 15 years ago and never looked back. She is a loner, tends to be snarky a

Murder?...Arson?...Theft? Oh, my! Quite an interesting (and at times, very sad) family! I downloaded this book along with a couple other books. I plodded through the other two and then started reading this one. I so enjoyed this book that I scolded myself for not reading it sooner. Love this family of "mysterious" siblings, and the additional characters that add to the supernatural feel of the story. The beginning is great with quite a hook describing the nasty family dynamics. What a horrible m ...more

The cover of this book is absolutely stunning, and the description intrigued me; so of course I had to read it. This book follows The Rowan Family. All of them have magical powers and each have their own past. One thing they all have in common, however, is their controlling mother Racheal. Racheal owns a Rosemary Thyme store and is known in town as a scorned woman who you do not want to be intertwined with.
After Racheal's death, her 3 children Vic, Phillipa and Liam come together and use their

OMG this story line was amazing, I was lucky enough to be a BETA reader for this book and the first time I read it straight thru because I needed to know what was going to happen next and couldn't wait to do the job at hand.
The main characters were well written and I felt for them through out this suspense filled story. I would recommend this to everyone

A Spell of Rowans is an emotional thriller following three siblings dealing with the aftermath of their mothers death while also carrying the scars of abuse. Their mother harassed the townsfolk and became the ire of many. When Victoria's mother dies and her assistant is murdered, Victoria sets out to uncover the truth and protect her family.

Victoria is a standout character in this riveting story. She is the middle-child and had to deal with trauma her entire life. She is easily one of the most c

Ding dong, the witch is dead.

'A Spell of Rowans' definitely was a wild ride! In this novel, we follow the three Rowan siblings as they deal with the aftermath of their mother's death. The death, was by no means viewed as a tragedy, as Rachel Rowan was not beloved by her children, nor the entire town of Grimsby. The Rowan family has al

A fun, twisty, magical mystery that I did not see coming.

Victoria is called home to the small town where she grew up when her mother dies. She needs to tie up the loose ends of her mother’s estate with her sister Phillipa and brother Liam. Questions begin to come up about the suspicious nature of her mother’s business and whether or not Rachel Rowan was actually murdered. The siblings are forced to face the effects that their abusive childhood had on each of them, and in some cases, seek redemp

Alright alright alright - This was an unexpected hit with me. This was not I repeat this was not a fantasy or romance book. It was (imo) adult fiction, with a bit of fantasy, and some (maybe minor) elements/influences of mystery. I was completely immersed in this book, and I connected with the characters more than I expected. I loved it because instead of the normal who dun it book, we all knows who did it. Nash is famously meticulous with character development, and her writing is (again, as alw ...more

First, the story was incredible. The plot/subplots were original, definitely not the typical whodunnit. When I thought I'd found an answer, there was a plot twist or two that threw a monkey wrench in the works. I couldn't wait to see what happened next. Second thing I noticed and appreciated was the pacing. Each chapter moved the story forward while sharing past and present events in a very matter of fact way. Third, the characterizations were amazing. Each person had very distinctive voices, be ...more

A Spell of Rowans is a twist of a mystery with just enough supernatural, fantasy aspects. It's a remarkable balance, where the magic abilities of the Rowan children help their intelligence and survival instincts thrive.

Victoria is a relatable character, even without having suffered the childhood abuse she did. There is a quality about her, the closed-off-ness, that comes from living and having relationships broken or torn away.

The romance between Vic and Reed, Hunter and Pip, and Nell and Liam

This was a special book. I could just tell from page one that this was going to go in my favorites pile.

I fell in love with Vic on the first page. She’s witty and snarky (in a good way), and I just fell into her world. A world filled with human monsters and real magic.

Her brother Liam also stole my heart. It killed me to learn about his past and why is the way he is. Even so, I enjoyed the story.

This book is a page-turner and will keep you intrigued until the end. I actually didn’t want it to

This book really captivated me from the beginning.

The story of the three Rowan siblings coming together after their mother’s death has many tiers.

We understand early on that all three of them have extraordinary gifts, and as the story evolves we learn more of their gifts and their characters.

There is a bottom of sorrow through the book. The sibling shares both a childhood of abuse and a feeling of having let each other down. It makes my heart hurt, even if I find some peace in their love for eac

This book grabbed me right away and I was captivated all the way through. A mix of magic, evil, family issues, and murder in a small town. I really loved the gifts of the Rowan siblings, and Vic’s gift of empathy felt so real. I loved the unusual connection with Reed. I loved watching how characters changed through the story. I loved how both the home and the town (well, and every object!) seemed to have their own personalities or characters. I admit to being surprised by the ending. It was good ...more

The Rowan children, Philippa, Victoria and Liam hated their mother, and were glad she was dead not least because she had made their lives hell, and she was a witch. Victoria has made the trip back home to help her siblings sort through their mother’s estate. Sounds like a simple, if traumatic thing to do. But things start to get darker, when they hear that their mothers assistant, Patty has been murdered and that Liam is a suspect. Add to the mix that their mother had been using her talents to f ...more

First off , if you have ANY TRIGGERS TO CHILD ABUSE, please read with caution !! That being said this is a book filled with magic, the love of siblings for each other, and sometimes we pick our own problems to fight; sometimes they pick us !! Victoria, Philippe and Liam, never had an easy childhood ( or adulthood for that matter) even with the magic they posses/possessed life was a nightmare. Then they think with their Mother’s death all those problems will/would disappear. Not so !! The fun ( ...more

I love how Byrd portrayed magic in a realistic way. There’s no glitz and sparkle just an honest portrayal of a gift or sixth sense being a curse as well as a blessing.
Each character has a depth that you would expect from Byrd and the narrative draws you in and connects you to the small town mentality and also the emotions of the characters, especially Vic.
I’m a huge fan of Byrd and for me this book is her best work yet. It’s dark, raw and honest and completely spellbinding.

I thought this book was extremely good. It caught my interest in the first chapter and kept my interest until the last chapter. The child abuse scenes were horrible but I do not believe they were over the top. To anyone that sees this book and thinks it looks good please give it a try. You will not regret it.

There's a distance in the storytelling, a sort of detachment from the settings and to some extent the characters, created by minimal descriptions. I was still able to derive mental images of the settings, so it's not like I missed out on anything. It's just that the narration made me feel like I was floating, not really grounded in the story. That's not a bad thing, but it is very different. The sort of foggy atmosphere lent itself to the magical occurrences, making them a part of the story's wo ...more

Spinning tales of subtle magic with unexpected twists, Byrd writes the book you need, not the one you expected.

As one reviewer wrote: "When I get a Byrd story, I know I'm in good hands."

Whether it is a Doppelgänger who was once a medieval knight now working in college administration, or an updated Red Riding Hood escaping a post-WWI wolf pack, her characters all feel real.
