Young dog lovers will enjoy sniffing out the TRUTH about their favorite animals in this innovative Step 3 nonfiction reader.
Dogs don't sniff each other's butts as often as we think, right? That's a LIE! The TRUTH is, dogs almost always greet each this way! It gives them lots of information about other dogs. Though this engaging early reader is 100% fun, 25% of it is FALSE! In a unique Q&A format, proficient readers are quizzed about dogs to see if they can separate facts from "lies." The book's mascot--the Truth Sleuth--guides readers through this funny and fact-packed book, which features photos and illustrations of a wide variety of canines.
Step 3 Readers feature easy-to-follow plots about popular topics, for children who are ready to read on their own.

A new addition to Erica Perl's Truth or Lie series is a must for dog lovers and game lovers. A guessing game that promotes reading and teaches children while they have fun is a winning combination. The illustrations are wonderful. The majority of the guess-the-lie subjects are related to dog biology and the work they do for humans, but occasionally dip into history. As a Step 3 selection in Random House's Step into Reading program, this book is primarily geared for kids in grades 1-3 that are comfortable tackling new words. That said, one of the many things I appreciate about this book is that it's also a great read aloud for younger children. Because of this and the back matter resources, this is a terrific book for homeschoolers and other multi-aged learning environments.
Julianna and I took turns reading this book. We had fun deciding what facts were lies or true. We give this book 5 stars. Great learning book and entertaining to read with someone.
I absolutely LOVE the “Truth or Lie Dogs!” book, but then I love the whole series by Erica Perl. I am a big fan of dogs, but I learned a great deal by reading this book. The format is super fun, detective-style, and the pictures are engaging and educational as well. As a retired language arts teacher but lifelong educator and learner, I appreciate how so much TRUE information is shared (Some dogs have BLUE tongues!) than false information. I had no idea that a dog’s nostrils work independently from each other or that they sweat through their paws! I won’t give more away, but I highly recommend this series for children. There’s something for everybody with topics of dinosaurs, cats, sharks, inventors and presidents as well as dogs! Winner, winner! Invite your favorite young detective to dinner! You’ll all feast on an abundance of fun facts!!!
The entire Truth or Lie series is so much fun for every age and every kind of reader! Whenever our kids see that a new one has arrived in the library, everyone wants to be the first to check it out and “play” it in the classroom and bring it home to “play” with their families. What’s the best thing about that? By “play“ I mean “read!” These books also excite kids to create their own Truth or Lie books, so it’s a natural path into research and writing. What more could you ask for? :-)
This is such a fun way to learn about Dogs! We read it out loud as a family and all guessed which statement was the “lie”. We can’t wait to check out the other books in the series since we love cats, sharks and dinosaurs!
I was looking for a fun early reader book for my nephew and found this book, which manages to be playful, informative, and silly all at the same time. It encourages children to think critically about what they're told, and the photos and illustrations add a lot to the story. I'll be buying more TRUTH or LIE books!
