Wow! What a ride this one was. In true Austenesque fashion, Sarah Ladd pens a story that will keep you guessing until the very end--and a great ending it is. Swoony romance. Lots of intrigue. Characters that endear you and some that enrage you. This book has it all.
Regency romance readers will NOT want to miss this one.

When I read my first regency book years ago it was by Sarah Ladd, I was attracted by the beautiful cover of it and I haven't stopped reading them.
The Letter from Briarton Park is very intriguing, I simply could not stop reading it.
Elements of swoon worthy romance,mystery and romance combine to make this a do not pass up historical.
Letters today are not nearly as popular as they once were but an all important letter is life changing in this story.
A letter leads Cassandra on a trip to make a lot of self discoveries about herself and her family once she arrives at her destination.
The author does regency right, making for such an exciting read with clear descriptions of the time period from fashion and the division of social classes to the brilliant decor and landscapes.
Intrigue,danger,mystery and the depths of romance will keep you captivated within the pages of this book.

Delightful! Cassandra Hale has never known who her parents are and while this grieved her, she had accepted it and found happiness in teaching. Then, her mentor reveals bits of Cassandra's past just before her mentor passes away.
Cassandra arrives at Briarton Park seeking answers only to discover answers aren't readily available.
I loved that there were some period details about mills and technology included in the novel. The Letter from Briarton Park includes a great cast of characters and the unraveling of details was enjoyable and kept this reader guessing.
The cover is charming and perfect for the pages that follow. Another well done Regency novel by Sarah E Ladd.

Lovely audiobook!
I definitely recommend this mystery historical romance!
This follows Cassandra Hale who grew up an orphan at a girl's school. She receives a letter hinting about who her family is, so quickly travels to Briarton Park to meet the letter sender.
There's a new family living at Briarton Park now and a handsome widower James Warrington is there to greet her. Cassandra ends up helping Warrington's family in an unexpected way, so he feel indebted to help her figure out what's up with her family and this letter.
I really enjoyed the writing and the characters. They were dynamic and interesting and the setting came to life for me. The romance was slow burn and fun to read.

There is a haunting air to this Regency romance. Layered with mystery, wonderful characters, and a hero who is sigh worthy, the book kept me fully engaged during a hectic season. The heroine is on a journey to find out who she is, but someone does not want her to know because if she does an inheritance is lost. This book is filled with great characters and a mystery that interlays the growing romance. I couldn't read it fast enough and enjoyed each page. So good!

Excellent book:) I was kept intrigued throughout with this mystery/suspence type wholesome story; didn't want to put it down. The characters were all sensible as I call it, no over the top nor utterly annoying types that would drive one over the edge, but miserable old souls as usual but who did see their error of their crummy attitudes at least. There was gracious forgiveness extended and all around resolutions to which I was pleased ***not left with questions nor a "huh" type response that makes me fed up with the book and author. Other than two mentions of we need to pray, there weren't any spiritual elements as such but totally decent and appropriate. (pretty much the norm and all I would expect from Thomas Nelson these days having been taken over by a regular publisher) Never the less, I thoroughly enjoyed this story as much as I have enjoyed others of hers already and can certaily recommend this to anyone!

The plot of this book went exactly as I was expecting, there was nothing shocking or twists I didn’t expect. Which I think caused the book to feel very long and I had a hard time getting into it.
Like the author’s prior book, there were many moments when the main characters could have sent up a prayer for help from the Lord or where a discussion of faith or trusting God could have happened, but never did and I was really disappointed to see that happen once again. The reveal of who the bad guy was wasn’t shocking, but disappointing, nonetheless. There were many parts that could have been an excellent lead into seeing the characters’ faiths. I really wish the faith elements would have been stronger because this book felt more like a clean fiction book than Christian fiction one.
As far as Cassandra’s birth secret, while it was sad at times, it can definitely be a reality for adoptees or orphans meeting with or learning about a biological parent. I did feel like it gave the story have a depressing undertone, though, which affected my personal rating and I give a caution notice about it. To some it may not bother reading about it, to some it may trigger painful memories or feelings, and to others it may help and possibly heal, every person and their experiences are different.

Four stars for this book because of two things:
1. This book was super slow paced. I don’t mind slower-paced reads, but honestly the story didn’t even begin to pick up remotely until about 60% through. I read this along with a few other books so the slow pace didn’t bother me as much since it wasn’t the only book I was reading.
2. The reveal felt a bit anti-climatic to me, and I wasn’t surprised by who the murderer was. The author did do a good job setting up the stage leading to the reveal, but it was a character I could have easily guessed was guilty, so for that reason it was a bit of a letdown.
This book was such a clean read, and that’s getting harder to find in Christian fiction. Clean romance and interactions, nothing borderline or inappropriate, and just a sweet ending to the book. 😊

When Sarah Ladd's first book, The Heiress of Winterwood debuted in 2013, the cover convinced me to buy it. And I loved it and was so happy to find a new author to follow. By the way, her covers have always been great.
Ladd really does a Regency well, too. I love the depth she adds to her characters and the mystery she includes only adds to the book's appeal. This one was especially intriguing. Well done! Recommended.

June 16, 2022DNF- Tbh the only issue I had with this book was that it was superrrrrr slow and it bored me :(
I don't mind slow books at all but this one felt like it was too much...plus, the plot was pretty predictable.

A letter delivered two years too late adds consequences. Each question answered adds a connection to the overall portrait. But does anyone want to know the whole truth?

Yep. This one is a must-read for anyone who even slightly likes romance, mystery, regency-era, or Jane Austen vibes. I guarantee it will be one I revisit in the near future!!

Sarah Ladd is one of my go-to authors for a well-written Regency romance. She pens a marvelous blend of heartwarming characters, intriguing mystery and sweet romance that will keep readers engaged. I love how Ladd mixes the different social classes in her stories. The social unrest surrounding the mills and workers has been a focus in several of her stories adding authentic historical detail to her regency setting.

Leaving everything familiar behind, based on the contents of a cryptic letter, Cassandra Hale enters the small town of Anston with a mystery to solve; her parentage. With a small sum of money to fund her stay, Cassandra slowly becomes ingratiated into the community, which looks upon her with the same measure of suspicion that she feels towards some of them.
Becoming acquainted with the local vicar, who seems to have a certain propensity for anticipating her every need, Cassandra is grateful for his knowledge of the area's history. But it is the master of Briarton Park, James Warrington, who catches Cassandra's full attention, their awkward introduction serving as only the beginning of their curious and somewhat awkward interactions. A story weaved with love and mystery! A perfect fall read as it is set during the fall with glimpses of leaves turning red, orange and yellow. Intriguing right from the beginning! Starts off with a mystery and a woman determined to find out the truth. The first clue leads her to James. A widower who has two young daughters, a sister and his mother in law living with him at Briarton Park. His sister, Rachel, is a piece of work. James’ mother in law *head shaking* that woman! I did like the James and his late wife genuinely loved each other. And it wasn’t like he didn’t love her or she cheated on him. I really did enjoy getting to know Cassandra and James and following them on their journey and love story! They just fit so well together! James’ daughters are very sweet. I only wish they were in the book a bit more. Children add so much to a story. I do wish Cassandra’s parents and the secrets surrounding that to have been different and more of a digging and piecing the clues together. It happened so fast and it was too obvious. Her father was not a good man and I didn’t like that part of the story and what her poor mother went through. Finally, he told his mother in law what’s what. I love when the female main character is a governess! That I know for sure is a job I would have if I lived back then! I don’t know why I didn’t realize who the bad guy was. It was a shocker! And way to go Rachel! She really redeemed herself as a character at the end! Delightful ending! Another wonderful start to a series by Sarah E Ladd! I’m ready for Book 2!

The atmospheric descriptions pulled me right into the the mysterious, intriguing world of the autumnal Yorkshire Moors.

I really enjoyed The Letter from Briarton Park. The heroine, Cassandra receives a mysterious letter and sets out to find its meaning. As a result she encounters danger, secrets, mystery, and love.

What a delightful book!! Sarah Ladd is a remarkable author. She captures you with the characters and the entire Jane Austen vibe. I've adored every book I've read by her!

The Regency Era early industrial backdrop, a dramatic Yorkshire setting, a tantalizing mystery, and a slow burn sweet romance drew me into finally giving a new to me author a try. I love the combo of historical setting, romance, and suspense and I’ve noted this author’s works generally include them so it has only been a matter of time before I picked up one of her books.
Cassandra Hale has no notion of her family background. Her memories are of growing up as a boarding student and then staying on to teach there because there is nothing else for her. Then, on her death bed, Cassandra’s mentor shares a letter hinting at Cassandra’s family background, but doesn’t share nearly enough. Cassandra goes on a personal quest to finally get answers about her family that lead her from just outside London to the brooding environs of Yorkshire.
Cassandra’s venture almost ends at the start when she arrives at Briarton Park only to discover it has been purchased by gentleman mill owner, James Warrington, who knows little of the previous owner and nothing of her. Cassandra is determined to get answers so she remains in the area to discover what she can about her connection to Mr. Clark, who wrote her letter and was the previous owner of Briarton Park and his son is now running the man’s mill. Slowly she pieces things together, but someone is determined to keep Cassandra from learning the truth about her past.
Meanwhile, she meets the vicar, Mr. North, who shows an interest in her, and others who take sides about her presence and who have decided opinions about her. She befriends James Warrington’s precocious younger sister when she gets into trouble and agrees to help the widower by becoming governess to his two young girls while dealing with James’ snobbish mother in law who resides with the family. The gently-paced romance that develops out of mutual respect and understanding between Cassandra and James is set against a rising trouble in the mills as workers fear the new machines that replace the old ways and a murder mystery lending further suspense as secrets come out and Cassandra’s own confusion about her past and future.
I found this first expedition into Sarah E Ladd’s writing to be engaging from the start. I’m always up for atmosphere to permeate the tone of a story and this one had it from the beginning. It was obvious that there were secrets to be discovered and the characters of Cassandra and James drew me in from the start. The pacing stays slower and steady for much of the book and I easily figured out most of the mystery, but that in no way detracts from the build of tension and suspense in the relationships and suspense plotting. There was more than one prospective suitors, but I never felt it slip into love triangle annoyance. There was no neglect to historical backdrop and setting nor with the characters own backgrounds. It all felt natural and easy as connected elements.
Early on, I felt in tune with Cassandra’s need to know where she came from and why she was left alone. The people who knew are either gone or unwilling to help her. She has lived sheltered at the boarding school with just her former teacher and then employer for support, but she is intrepid to go forth and find a new place for herself even as she discovers her past and must deal with other people’s expectations about her. James is another character who won me from the get-go as he tries to deal with a volatile sixteen year old sister, a domineering mother in law, two young motherless girls, his own grief, and the troubles at the mills. He is not too preoccupied to have sympathy and understanding for Cassandra and appreciate her with no issues about social class or background.
This is the first in a series of Yorkshire books and I am so glad this atmospheric setting and that time period will continue forward. I hope that Rachel gets her book next.
All in all, this gentle, but clever historical fiction was well-developed, engaging, and just the right amount of suspenseful and romantic. I will definitely be seeking out more from this author and highly recommend her books to those who like sweet historical romance with a strong blend of suspense.

Sarah Ladd is definitely a favorite author! I love the way she weaves romance, mystery, and suspense into her stories. This book had a Jane Eyre feel to it which I loved. It begins at a boarding school where Cassandra Hale’s beloved mentor Mrs. Denton lays dying. Her last words to Cassandra are of a letter she kept secret for two years. Always believing she was an orphan, Cassandra feels shocked and betrayed to know Mrs. Denton kept this hidden from her. Mr. Clark promises in his letter to share details about her past and family, so Cassandra journeys to the small village of Anston to seek out the mysterious owner of Briarton Park.
James Warrington, a young widower with two small daughters, just purchased Briarton Park. He lives there with his children, mother-in-law, and sister and longs for a fresh start after losing his wife. When a young woman arrives with a letter from the previous owner, he’s immediately intrigued by her. After she rescues his sister, he feels a strong desire to help her find the answers she seeks.
This story really drew me in. Cassandra is extremely sympathetic and I loved seeing her find the sense of belonging and family she always wanted. She has to navigate a world of mystery and intrigue where not everyone is as they seem. There are those who genuinely want to help her and those threatened by her past. I loved James as well. He’s a caring father who wants to open his heart again, but fights his feelings for a myriad of reasons. The more time he spends with Cassandra, the harder it is to resist her.
I loved the Yorkshire setting and the dynamics of the small village. The side characters enriched and added depth to the story. The author introduces the historical antagonism between mill owners with new technology and the workers. While barely touched on, it will be interesting to see how this history may appear in future stories.
The mystery and suspense definitely kept me turning the pages. Briarton Park is full of secret passageways and hidden rooms. There’s a murder with several suspects. There’s also some great themes of family, greed, and forgiveness. I enjoyed how Ms. Ladd tied up the loose ends yet left a few threads to build more stories on. She created a memorable novel I would definitely read again.

2.5 stars Cassandra Hale grew up knowing nothing about her parentage, but a deathbed confession reveals a two-year-old letter with hints to her family’s identity. Cassandra travels to Briarton Park only to learn Mr. Clark has passed away.
James Warrington is a widower living with his daughters, sister, and mother-in-law and is the new master of Briarton Park. When Cassandra appears with a letter from the previous owner and then proceeds to save his sister from eloping with someone who only wants her money, he feels drawn to her.
Charlotte was a strong character, and both she and James were lonely without letting it define them. James has a deep sense of family and Charlotte wants to belong. The antagonists were over the top for me and stereotypical: the angry mother in law, the jealous half brother, the villainous alternate live interest.
This was a good premise, a master falls for the governess trope with a family mystery and a murder thrown in. But there was too much telling rather than showing, and the mystery was predictable. The couple needed more interactions to make their relationship believable for me. Their shared secrets wasn’t enough for me to believe in their relationship. I couldn’t even call it a romance because there was a lack of chemistry and we never saw their relationship develop for ourselves.

So excited for a new book/new series from Sarah Ladd!

James, the current owner of Briarton Park, has too much on his mind as the widower father of two girls, also responsible for his younger sister and his mother-in-law. After Cassandra helps his sister out of a hard situation, he offers her a position as governess to his daughters.
As usual, the writing and storycraft are next-level. I really liked the dual POV as James and Cassandra become better acquainted, then friends, and ultimately fall in love. The mystery surrounding Cassandra's situation was also very interesting and the resolution very satisfying.
Fingers crossed Rachel's story is next.

Sarah E. Ladd is an author I've been meaning to read for quite some time. After reading The Letter from Briarton Park, I am looking forward to tackling the remaining books of hers in my TBR list. Overall, I found this novel had a very cozy feel to it. This is a regency era romance, with some mystery/suspense thrown in which keeps things interesting. The setting is the small village of Anston, which added nicely to the mood of this book. The characters in this novel were likeable and the main characters displayed a fair amount of character development. While readers will guess who the perpetrator is early on, the plot builds nicely. Potential readers in the mood for an easy, cozy read should give this one a try. (3.5*)

I adore novels set in 19th century England and really enjoyed this engaging Regency era romantic suspense by Sarah E. Ladd. The opening premise hooked me right away: heroine Cassandra’s mentor, on her deathbed, shares a letter that sends Cassandra on a quest to find answers about her family heritage. Where did she come from? Why was she left at a boarding school alone with just a teacher for support? Adventure, mystery, and romance ensue! There are intriguing and sympathetic characters, a sweet romance, lots of secrets to be revealed and the perfect amount of suspense to keep me turning pages.

I loved the vibes of Jane Austen mixed with Jane Eyre in this book. Two of my favorite Janes.
A deathbed confession, a letter, and a desire to discover family starts this book off and left my mind with many questions. The further I'd read, some questions were answered, and other questions started appearing in my mind.
I loved the almost gothic feel of the book. The unknown and the search which yields helpful and unhelpful answers had me turning the pages until all was revealed. My reading time was very limited so I had to wait quite a while to discover all of the answers I wanted to know. But it was well worth the wait and the read. I had my suspicions and it was fun to see how my guesses and thoughts turned out compared to what story the author told.
There is some sweet romance that builds slowly. The secondary characters added lots of fun twists and turns in this book. Especially the cute daughters of James. Both Cassandra and James have some heartaches from their pasts. And those heartaches definitely play a factor in the story as well.
This is another win for me by this author. I've read and enjoyed all of her books and can't wait to see what she offers next.

Plus there's a village brimming with locals who might just be harbouring things they want kept hidden as well. And Cassandra's arrival proves to be the catalyst that stirs up an emotional tempest of intrigue and romance. What a thrilling read!
Loved the pacing and the way the author slowly reveals key bits of the plot until you think you finally have all the pieces to solve the mystery...only you don't because there are even more startling discoveries lying ahead! And the way Ladd develops the relationship between Cassandra and James is sweet perfection and not without it's own drama!
